Great video. Thank You! As far as input trim goes, I set it to 0 and use a clean boost in front to push the level up to the OK range. So far it is working great. Best wishes!
Michael looking back now after a couple months of using the Tonex1 I have found two amp captures that are really working well. I like to work clean edge of break up using a Fender Deluxe Reverb and a Vox AC30. I did have to try out literally dozens of different captures to find models that had decent levels. As far as the input level after experimenting quite a bit, I found a -1 worked great for the two models I'm using. Since I am running a small rig thru an HX Stomp I'm using the Stomp for my OD, Reverb, Chorus, and Delay. Also have an EQ at the end of the signal chain. I noticed the ToneX captures can get flubby really fast if the input level is set too high. The -1 seems to leave enough head room for the signals in front of it.
Yeah, I run mine at 0 so not far off from where you landed. It does take some experimenting to find to amps/captures that work well together. I’ve even had different captures of the same amp/same company not work well together 🤷🏼♂️
Just downloaded your Platform Collection. It was super easy and only took 1 minute to get them. I will check them out soon. I do have a Lightspeed that I was planning to sell, but maybe your captures will be the magic combo with that Lightspeed. haha Great video, Thanks for sharing!
I have found latency varies by capture it seems. I picked two that I really liked and are pretty close. I saw on a video that The full size and mini do have different latency or response time but overall I find it’s not out of phase and gives it a small stereo spread. I used my Daw to record and check phase and found I prefer they are not perfectly in line so it doesn’t bother me. But I feel like it really depends on the captures you use together. There is a Lot of trashy captures out there
I really like the ToneXone. Sounds great. I love capturing my own equipment and having a method to play it live. I use Irs with my HXStomp and that works well too. I definitely use these FOH solutions as a set it and Go situation. I just use a few pedals to change tonality. I don’t think you can go wrong getting one of theses. May not turn out to be a permanent fixture on your board, but it fits so easily in a gear bag and sounds fantastic.
I'm curious what power supply do you use? I've noticed tonex is susceptible to noise from flouresent lights or dirty power more than my stomp or other modelers.
I haven’t had any noise issues from the ToneX specifically (not to say it’s not possible). I have a bunch of different power supply’s - Truetone, Strymon, Walrus and they’ve all been great.
Great, informative videos, thanks! I’m also a touring multi guy, and particularly interested in how you use Tonex for pedal-steel. Any specific amps/settings that you might suggest? TIA
I don’t do the super clean steel thing so I use a Deluxe Reverb and a Dumble style amp in stereo. Both captures are on the edge of breakup and breakup when I dig in. There are some a few pedalsteel amp captures on Tone.net but you also can’t go wrong with a Twin Reverb IMO
Great video. I just found you. I know this is 3 months or so old. I can see why you use the setup you do. Totally makes sense. I just play guitar in little bitty clubs and with some friends . We have to go direct because all of the local places make us go direct or have a silent stage or very very low volume. I think for my needs I'm going to go with the Boss IR2. I also thought about the Tonex 1, but I don't think it or the line 6 new pedal have an effects loop and the IR has an effects loop that allows you to put delay for instance after the cab. I will be using an Eventide micro pitch delay and maybe a boost pedal in front and a couple other favs in the loop as well as my ever so trusty Morley Steve Vai wah which I absolutely love. I play mostly blues hard rock and 80s metal, but some ballads originals, etc. Think Thin Lizzy meets AC/DC. 😂. Big John Sykes fan. I can absolutely see how your setup with how busy you are is great and the midi is very cool . If money were no object I would for sure use an AxeFx. I think they have the best effects I've actually tried. It seems that most products have good or decent amps, but many fall short on effects. My cousin who has a studio near Chicago has like every amp on earth if seems. 😂 Not really, but a bunch, and he uses the Kemper. He loves it and he captures his amps such as his bassman and his recto, etc.. ❤ Very cool... ❤ Thanks man. ❤
Can tonexone become like hxone where I can change it to any pedals that I want? For example I want to make tonex one to become chorus, or tremolo or phaser?
Thanks for that again informative video. I was impressed of the recording quality of that intro song. It must be recorded in a professional studio - or did you record this at home?
I did everything in my home studio! I do short tracks like this on a lot of my videos as well. Any background music is music I have created too. Glad you liked it!
Michael got the ToneX One. I have it interfaced thru the loop on my HX Stomp. Thus far it’s been kind of love/hate relationship. Many of the capture models sound great and better than the Line 6 models. The input trim is fairly easy with the new update. I’m on the fence as far as the ToneX SE app. The amp model availability is fantastic. But some of the captures with the high gain models are very flubby and need a lot of tweaking.
It is available SE version in my subscription as well. Just a second day of using the tonex one. Have installed the asio driver on windows 10 and got an issue that the volume puts on maximum and doesn’t react on adjustment ((( So if I turn on some backing track or some system sound it plays on maximum 🤯 Do you know how to fix it?😊
My question for the ToneX -1 is wanting to use it for stompbox caps only (OD, Dist, Fuzz) and the new FX that are coming out soon (chorus, flanger, phazer, etc). No cab or head caps needed for this end. Possible?
I’ve heard of guys figuring out midi switching via USB so seems like it’s possible but I don’t think that is an official feature yet. If that’s a make or break feature for you, I’d wait for future updates on ToneX One or go with the larger units
Yes, a direct capture of the amps and included IR’s for each preset. This allows you to change the IR side to suit individual preferences. I’ve been really happy with doing it this way and the options it gives you
This will go great with 'plans' to make the best resonator guitar pickup extravaganza EVAR. I dream. ;-) Starting with George Benson nickle something strings. $50 a set better be hefty output. 8-]
If I understand it’s just a difference of how many Amps (captures) come with it. (The difference between the ToneX Se and Max software that is..) With the ones on Tone.net and third party captures I don’t think it’s necessary. There are some great sounds in MAX but I wouldn’t let SE deter you!
I have the walrus audio acs1 (after hearing your awesome tones through it) Would you recommend switching over to the tonex one? Great vids as always my dude.
I just changed from ACS1 to a Tonex and Tonex One. You would have to have two to get stereo amps. Also have to go through a ton of captures to get one you like. I never cared for any of the IRs that are in the ACS1 and had to go through tons of IRs for it as well. In a live setting it’s probably not very much difference between the ACS1 or Tonex. You might change the way you set and use your drives. I got Tonex mainly to capture my real amps and will be doing that in the next couple of weeks.
Love your videos, brotha!! Been doing some captures of my own, I’d love to send em to you and get your feedback if you’re up for it! I’ll definitely be trying out yours soon 🙏🏼
To my ears, Michael's captures are top-notch in the platform (in vintage style) I recommend trying the free ones and consider getting the full pack.
Thanks!
Crowder! I’m with Skillet! We’ve done a bunch of shows together. I’m their guitar tech.
Great video. Thank You! As far as input trim goes, I set it to 0 and use a clean boost in front to push the level up to the OK range. So far it is working great. Best wishes!
Yeah, that’s where I’ve landed on mine as well!
IK should be thanking you... I literally made a video saying I probably don't need a ToneX... But this video clarified so many things I'm now tempted!

Have been exploring my tonex since yesterday and also want to add it to my hx stomp. Do you plug it in the fx loop or into the input?
Depends on what you’re going for. I go HX Stomp>ToneX

I’ve been thinking to put tonex into the loop block, after this block apply some reverb and delay from the hx stomp.
I’m sure it will sound great!

Does Tonexone work well for electro acoustic guitars?
I used a clean DI capture but I bet you could just turn off the amp/cab blocks

I think you could make the same presets with effects turned on and off and switch between 2 or 3 sounds. The larger unit is much easier in the regard.

Hi Michael. What frfr would you suggest?
does the tonex one, have effects? reverb or something?
It does but minimal - Noise gate, Compressor, Reverb!
