In this video, I talk in depth about one point of confusion for a lot of folks when using Tonex. The difference between “Tone Models” and “Presets”. To really get the most out of your tone models and understand what you are hearing, it is very important to understand the difference and what we are hearing at any given moment. I also have a free tone model to go along with this video, this one is of my new Dr. Z Z Wreck Jr. amp model and I must say these have quickly become my favorite tone models. If you like what you hear, you can grab the free tone model from ToneNet or my website at the links below. You can also grab the full tone model bundle from another link below. I hope you enjoy the video and the presets!

Hands down, you have the best TONEX tutorial videos on the planet! Thanks, Jason.
I bought the TONEX Pedal a few months ago. Confusion and a long learning curve is a huge understatement. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a great development in AI / IR technology. The confusion and long learning curve is a byproduct of the engineers failing to consider the end user ... who they are, what they already know or don't know, and how to clearly communicate information to them. If you had to program your new car as you do this device, you would never get out of the driveway! IKM did a good job of making a lot of the TONEX Pedal interface similar to that of a real amp. In my experience, engineers make the worst resources for education and training. I think that by simply creating a more intuitive interface, a better arranged User Manual ... built on accomplishing tasks on the pedal ... covering all of the steps to get from A to B to C, and the video tutorials with the same objective, the learning curve for this product would be much shorter and the need to call IKM Tech Support much less.
Totaly agree. Plus the support is awfull. I can’t use Tonex with Mac cause it does not recognise librarian, and it happens with many people. No sollution by IK.
The most clarifying video about ToneX I have seen. I was really confused about the differences between Tone models and Presets and now it's cristal clear for me. Thank you!
Your videos are extremely useful and help SO much! Thank you!
Knowledge is power! This clears up what was starting to be a nightmare scenario. As a "thank you" for clearing up the Tone Model/Preset headache I will go purchase one of your bundles.
Really glad it was helpful :-) Also, thank you kindly for the support and I hope you enjoy the tone models!
This bundle format looks perfect. Having 5 different levels of gain, both with and without a cab, is a great idea!
I really enjoy working with it that way :-)
Thank you your video was very helpfull
When there's lots of options it can get confusing quick. You pull up someone's tone model and it sound like crap, but on their end with their presets it sounded great. I think a lot of these great tone models get passed by because the initial tone model is, as you showed, running your prior settings, ie with or without reverb, cab and so on. Tone models with presets is the way to go! Good Video.
dude, super helpful
Thank you for enlightening this Tone X newbie 😎
My pleasure :-)
I'm a total beginner guitarist, learning all the nuances of tone, FX, modulation, etc..... my goal is to have options to learn that's not going to break the bank so picked up Tonex/Amplitude Max. Was totally confused for a bit as to why the volume would go from low to almost blowing my monitors.
This video is the best explanation of what's going on, and how to use these tools correctly. Thanks for breaking it down. I totally get it now. 👍
My pleasure and really glad it was helpful :-)
Your presets are beautiful. And the audio demos on the website are Great too. The one thing these tutorials show is the learning curve of the device, and how easy it would be to be deceived and or Screw up, if one leaves something on/or forgets hitting the reset button. And having to watch to see if Cabs are selected. You had another video that is very informative as to what one can do with Cabinets, and the VIR setting. I think sometimes players forget how much a type speaker and type mic. and placements are to the Tone. This software use Has a Huge learning Curve from what I can tell, especially with going back and forth with Amplitube 5, and the Tonenet community. I am still wondering if this tonex pedal would be a worthwhile investment.
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEOS..
My pleasure and thank you for watching :-)
Great video, very helpful, thank you. You sound great too.
Thank you Dan and glad you enjoyed!
A really excellent video, and stunning tones 😀☝️
Quoting another RUclips reviewer (Henning) he said who needs to know what
amp model it is is, it’s the actual sound that matters. That Dr Z sound is awesome. I’ve never heard of that brand of amp, but the sound is incredible. Perfect, Mr S!
Thank you so much :-) Really glad you enjoy the tones!!
@@JasonSadites Indeed. I was looking for a 'just breaking up guitar' tone for a country song I am recording, then up this popped! Perfect :) Thank you
This was quite helpful, just toward understanding Models vs Presets and establishing a workflow. This thing has had me incredibly confused over the past few weeks-between the illogic of the layout and UX and also various software and net glitches…. I wonder if you will see a need/opportunity to do a video just on basic setups and workflow. I use my ToneX pedal with a full pedalboard and I still don’t know how my interface should be set up, to play between the pedal and the app. I’m beginning to think I should *_only_* be playing models and presets via the app and not the hardware, as that would eliminate the interface switching I’m doing, but then I have to ask why I even need the pedal.
Excellent! Could you demo a pedal capture?
Thank you so much for this Jason, I’m really starting to understand this (I think) 😂. If I want to add a capture of a stomp box to one of your captures, would I need to do that in AmpliTube or can it be done in Tonex?
Great info!
What speakers are you using for Tonex and Amplitude? I have Yamaha HS8’s and I can’t dial in a good sound. Sound is great with headphones. Looking at a QSC 12 of Mission Engineering Gemini’s. Will either of these two speakers improve my sound or do I need to work on EQ with my Yamaha’s?
Thanks so much! Let's say I do some captures from my amp collection and want to sell im pack. In that case, would I have to save the captures made as presets?
I get mine tomorrow. Stoked.
Thanks for sharing! I also don't understand how can I organize my tone models. For example if I want to have only 5 amps on the pedal. It is possible? Thanks
Dear Jason, thanks for your input.I am Christian from Germany, mainly a bassist for more than 30 but also playing guitar. I am using the Tone X Pedal with Tone X Max and Amplitibe 5 Max besides my beloved Line 6 Pod Go Wireless and really like the presets you offer. The latest Mooer GE 1000 Li is also a great device but additinally it was too much for me. Reduce the guitar fleet to the max is my device furthermore. Do you have a good and suitable idea for a power plant to support Pod Go and Tone X Pedal the same time? Best wishes 🤟
Hi Jason, when you are running through these sounds which sound great! btw! Your pedal isn't even plugged in correct? and are you just plugged into your interface with guitar cable into HiZ? Love the tones from this pedal but still little confused about a couple things. Thanks for the info you have put out, Nice playing as well!
Is there a guide anywhere to how you get to audition all the tone models in the library? Been looking for days, all I get to hear is the tone model plus what is on the pedal, so can't audition sounds.
Hello! Great video, are the Tonex presets from the premium tone models mine regardless of o downgrade or upgrade? Meaning after downloading Amanda saving a preset is the preset mine forever or nope? 😊
Really confused Jason, how do I do I set up auditioning tone models and presets using my own guitar signal when browsing tone models and presets without storing them to the pedal bank. Like you are doing in this video? I’ve been trying to get them to play back either via my FRFR speaker or through the PC, but so far I can only audition using the play function in TONEX, which of course isn’t my guitar signal. Any good videos on the initial set up please? Connecting guitar to TONEX/TONET for playback? Thanks
Can ToneX IR's be exported to work on other devices, such as importing them, then loading them into into the HX Stomp IRs Panel?
Is there a way we can download AmpliTube 5 presets on TONEX pedal ?
Question for TONEX owners in the know. So, finally took delivery of the pedal and got things up and running (took some time, several retries, updating software and performing a full reset of the pedal itself.) But I'm confused how to access/download tone models (like this wonderful free tone model here, for instance)? When I open up the Librarian and type anything in the search window, I get no returns. I can only see the models that the software is currently displaying. Do I have to download the tone model separately before "bringing it into" the Tonex software? Advice appreciated!
So, I'm thinking on buying the new ToneX One as an amp substitute for live performances, I own an amp already, is just easier to carry a tiny little pedal that sounds like an amp, my question would be, since I don't own a tone of amps to make my own captures, I would have to create my presets, so, Is it something you can do manually without capturing a real amp?, I live in a third world country, and we have little to none access to good amps like you guys have in your countries, so, Can we edit our own presets or downloading (purchasing)would be the only way to have good amp presets for your pedal?, Is there some free presets on ToneNet to start testing?
how do you connect it so that you can play it through the pedal like that?
For some reason, I am not able to switch the tone models from the Tonex software. Clicking on the tone model, just doesnt change on the pedal. Any advise?
My tonex pedal isn't syncing up with the software any ideas what this could be?
how are you auditioning them without adding to pedal?
when i try to open input devices in the audio settings it says warning can`t open input why?
I can't make adjustments to any tone model via computer. In fact, I can't even open tonex app without the pedal being connected, and then I just hear the preset that the pedal is on. But I can't make adjustments to it via computer. After my other Tonex pedal had to be sent back for the issue of not connecting to the computer that this pedal is just a POS or IK multimedia needs a "Tonex editor"
So, someone please tell me-You purchase the Tonex pedal, then have to connect to your PC/MAC to download presets and/or tones? is there a subscription required to ToneNet?
When your in the software do any changes to the presets transfer to the Tonex pedal itself? Or is that an additional fee? I'll come back to your channel, but I need an "unboxing" video to walk me thru all this digital nightmare! Downloading 'Amps/Presets" from ToneNet? Does IK guarantee that what you download will actually work and not be any malware?
Thanks for your video. greatly appreciated.
Hey Michael,
The Tonex Pedal comes with a large number of tone models included and can be used straight away without having to hook it up to a computer. ToneNet has no subscription required. Although you do need to setup a free account. When in the software you can edit your presets and when you are happy with the way they are dialed in, you can simply go to the Librarian tab in the software and drag the preset onto your pedal, no additional fees. All of the tone models you download from ToneNet are safe and must be a valid Tonex tone model, no worried there. Having said that, myself and others offer premium tone models that can be purchased if you desire if you find a tone model to your liking. I truly hope that helps answer your questions :-) All the best!
Okay, I just figured out why the ToneNet tone models sounded like crap. Not only do you have to change the pedal settings from LIVE to INTERFACE mode but also go into global settings and put the AMP and the SPEAKER from ACTIVE into BYPASS mode. Of course, if you want to play the pedal in LIVE mode don’t forget to change all three settings again. Please pass on this information.
This is the answer to the question I had. I will try this out and see. Thank you
What confuses me is why they added the interface mode setting if you still have to bypass the amp and cab anyway…?
I can’t even get this thing to show up on my computer. Any ideas?
Hey Scott, I am assuming you are talking about Tonex Pedal? Do you have the latest Tonex software (1.2.3) installed on your computer?
Jason, When I right click it doesn't allow me to import. Do you or anyone else have any thoughts on why? I deleted and reinstalled the software. If I click on the Librarian I can move patches around so I know part of it is working. Thanks!
I do know some Mac users were having issues depending on the mouse they were using. Also, make sure you are on the Presets tab when right clicking and not the Tone Models tab.
@@JasonSadites Turns out i have a Mac lucky me. Yes I am on the preset tab. Thank you for the great videos and all your help. Your videos are truly amazing.
@Joe Wright Music ah thanks so much and really glad you enjoy the vids! Can I ask what you are using for a mouse?
@@JasonSadites I’m using the wireless one that came with the Mac.
Ah OK, I had one person who was using a track pad and it wasn't working. Have you tried using the "Control" button on Mac, I have been told that might work? I am a Windows guy so not always a lot of help to Mac folk.
Meh … Tonex is too expensive. It will never replace an actual amp
