After watching this for 15 minutes I realized Pete’s also dealing with having to capture everything for the video while doing the Tonex process at the same time and still has to do all the editing later. Let’s take a minute to appreciate how much work it takes to actually put out RUclips content. 🤘
Thank you! This one did take a really long time, days
Yep, Pete’s a legend.
@@PeteThorn it is well worth it because I’ve been watching your channel for at least the past three years and the production is amazing.
he definitely the go2 guy for gear and knowledge- great guy❤💯
Absolutely! Love this man. I'm gonna start making some captures, too...
Pete you’re the only RUclipsr that actually bothers to note how something responds to guitar volume levels. I appreciate that so much
Thanks! I'm a big "volume pot" guy, I'm old school that way
Seriously, a new, fully developed song for every demo? It's not enough he plays like a fiend, but the creativity Pete has is just mind-blowing.
Thanks! The music is the fun part!
I often find myself humming his demo tracks. Pete is such a good all around songwriter and can write catchy tunes in a lot of genres.
Yep. That's exactly how Pete demos all the gear. Been doing for years! Quite incredible, right?
I love that about Pete, and it keeps me coming back, as I’m always curious what he will do next. Such a gift! Thanks Pete!
Do you have a source for your compositions besides these demos? You need to compile these into complete tracks. This stuff is good and we all know it.
Your smile during the A/B comparison of the Tone Model vs the real deal says it all - It is an amazing technology indeed. A great demo as always.
You’ve got some great tone captures for ToneX - thanks!
Some of the absolute best captures are by Amalgam. Great stuff!
I agree your captures are all I use ! Love it ❤
Honestly... I just bought this product and came here to watch your demo. It made me buy a t-shirt from your shop, just to see the work you put down on this. It just made feel bad having watched all your work with demos through the years never giving something back. Thank you for your work in this community! ❤🎉❤️😘
Thank you!

What an absolute game changer. Most of us don't have thousands of dollars or the room to store gear. Now with the ability to have captured tube amps (some that are stupid expensive and super rare) and the ever increasing power of computers the rig for a gigging guitarist only needs to be one of these a lap top and plugging into the house. No lugging anything heavy around anymore. I am not into the all the engineering of it ... but I sure as hell will pay for captures done by experts like you Pete. Thank you so much. Killer playing by the way, you are a true master.
I love TONEX. 2 secrets about TONEX if you raise your sampling rate to 96K instead of 441 or 48K the impulse responses will sound far more accurate without losing the very top of the audio spectrum to aliasing. The reason the captures sound a little bit darker is due to aliasing causing frequency masking from the conversions low pass filtering. At 96k it pushes the aliasing way beyond the spectrum of our hearing range and cleans up the top end of the captures and the impulse responses. Don’t get me wrong they sound good at 48K but they are indistinguishable at 96k. Also if you want your amp captures to sound exactly like they do to your ear in a room and avoid the microphone’s color try a measurement microphone.
The only downside would be latency right? Since increasing the sample rate also increased CPU usage. Is the latency an issue?
@@HoshiFanatic The higher the sampling rate the lower your latency will be. You only need to do the captures at 96K but when you play through ToneX you can use whatever sampling rate you want. Cheers!!
@@joesalyersI am going to try this in a few weeks when I come back home! Super eager to find out if this actually holds up, but definitely sounds logical!
@@PippPriss If you want the capture to sound just like it does to your ear in the room without the Microphone adding its color and character to the capture use a measurement microphone. The Behringer EMC8000 is a $35 condenser mic that will capture the Amp with a mic coloring the sound. Cheers!!
The anti-aliasing filter is already above the limit of human hearing at 20kHz. A CD has a sample rate of 44.1 and frequency cap at 20kHz and could never be accused of being dark-sounding. Also most guitar amps/cabs don't produce much above 6-10kHz anyway. I'm not saying the 96kHz doesn't sound better (I trust your ears) and if there is no performance penalty, why not! Just be careful not to confuse a theoretical benefit for an actual benefit: our ears and minds are easily fooled.
I love the idea of having all these really close “clones” of great amps without having to spread tens of thousands of $$$ on the real thing. Sure amp collecting is fun but for many is cost prohibitive. Devices like this allow us to explore all types of tonal options and maybe get turned onto a sound that we previously didn’t think we’d like.
Great vid as always Pete.
The space they eat up is another cost. Two or three you can pile up anywhere, a dozen?
And it's a great way to keep churning out regurgitated versions of an old version year after year and call it "new and improved"... All these things are just to remove your money from your pocket and keep you buying instead of playing
@@robertdaniels5535 don’t disagree with you there. I think you have to find what works for you, stick with it and try not to get caught up in always having to have the next “best thing”. I personally still use tube amps and haven’t jumped over to modeling. They work for me, however this one really peaks my interest because of the form factor, tones and price.
Well I’m a tube amp builder and I know this is the future. It’s awesome technology and it sound amazing. Thanks for the video Pete.
It may indeed be the future for some. But, I suspect there will always be players who are interested in the more organic side of guitar performance. That's not to say plug in's, captures and cab sim aren't fantastic tools. But, there is something to be said for waling through the door after a tough day, grabbing a guitar, connecting a cable to a sweet amp and just playing. No knob twisting or button clicking. No thinking,
just playing.
@@msh6865 Exactly that! I believe and am sure that guitar amps will never be ‘out’. I played modellers for years, recorded with them and played live. Now I'm playing amps again. For me there is nothing better.
Been watching Pete for years, this is the best Tone I have heard on his channel yet!
I'm so excited for this profiling business. I build pedals and make custom versions of circuits. Will be so fun to profile them and share them with everyone
IK seriously just raised the capture bar while simultaneously lowering the price point of admission.
Most impressive.
Fantastic content Pete!
✌🤟🖖
Pete - thanks for touching on the feel vs real amps. Always something to consider.
Pete, you are such a great educator as well as musician.
Thank you!
At 21:30, the capture of the Germino Headroom 100 tone is absolutely heart-racing. The fact that it's, in ANY way, digital is mind-boggling.
I definitely want to buy that and the Capture unit too for live playing and recording. You play great too, Pete.
So basically with 750k of equipment, and guitar skills beyond anyone alive, a sound engineering degree you can get pretty decent sounds from the TONEX. 😂 Great job Pete!
It's an amazing little piece of gear - it's hardware _and_ a plugin - I think IK did a terrific job and props to them for getting the software in place first, rather than promising and not delivering. It's practically the only thing I'm using now for practicing...just sooo convenient and easy to manage the volume of a stack at full roar if you want. I'm on-board for any of the amps you want to capture Pete. Nice job!
@@aaronsinger Argue much? It was software _before_ the hardware piece came out. It sounds great, as Pete demonstrated. Be condescending somewhere else now.
Agreed - I’m not a plug-in user, but am glad the software came first, although, I think they need to make the Librarian more user friendly. The ToneX does sound great and can be more accurate than Kemper & QC (I have both).
@@456or7strings They've always seemed pretty committed to continuing improvement. I had Amplitube 4 as a 'jump-in-fast' practice tool several years back - used it sporadically; but 2-3 years later I got an email about upgrading to the full version of Amplitube 5 - they didn't nickel and dime...it was a free upgrade...an increasingly rare ethos from a company actually taking care of customers. Will be interesting to see how they tweak things going forward. Sounds great though.
I liked this video because Pete is expressing the complexity of the unit and processes involved. I feel like I understand him. Some of these (other tech videos out there) make out that it’s an easy process and you won’t have any problems. This was honest. Thanks
Hey Pete,
Thanks, this opens up a whole new world of sounds without having to own all the equipment or lug it around! I own a few AMPs but thats where it will stay!
Looking forward to learning how to use this thing and picking up your presets!
Easily the best explanation of what the "whole package" of what Tonex is. Added to that is the "why" & "how" of Tonex Capture which is hugely important but almost over never talked about. What does it all sound like? Pete proves with his incredible playing.
Thanks David!
This is the Tonex review that I’d been waiting for. The summary at the end was really useful too (intrigued re your thoughts on how the captures take pefals). Thanks Pete!
Pete is really a tone master... he can always get great guitar tones!
There are a lot of reviewers, but with great skill and musical sense only a few, and you are one of them. Kudos for that 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Pete, I have the pedal and looking forward to you releasing your capture pack… awesome sounds and sensational playing as always.
great review Pete... amazing times we're in.
I’m upgrading from my Atomic Amplifire to IK Multimedia Tone X ,that’s my new rig my new sound these days. Very Informative Pete, Thanks for the video. Ya rawk brother.
Great video! I already own the Tonex pedal, but I found this information valuable regardless. I agree that having to sift through all the available captures is a daunting and time consuming task. It's like going down the rabbit hole and keeps you away from making music for the most part. And that is a common problem across all of the products on the market (Kemper, Quad Cortex, Tonex, Headrush prime, etc.) I wish they could apply some AI technology to facilitate that, for example, by allowing you to sort the hundreds or thousands of sounds by some characteristics like gain among other parameters...
Yes I agree. I also don’t like cryptic names. Like I want to know exactly what the amplifier and cabinet etc. is from the name of the capture/preset
@@PeteThornпоэтому иногда проще взять усилитель и быстро получив результат не идти на компромисс, хотя в жизни всегда какието компромиссы.
Does it sound like an amp… not exactly. Does it sound like an amp professionally mic’d up through a sound system? Yes. Tim Pierce and Pete have their cabs in another room mic’d up and fed into their DAW. For the non-working passionate musician, this is recreating that world. Nothing can replace an amp and that excitement, but this makes it easy to record or practice to backing tracks. If only I had the time I did as a teenager! Great stuff, Pete!
It can capture any part of the signal path, doesn't need to include cab/mic. You can capture a preamp then send it to a real valve power amp and cab.
@@JN-qj9gf True… then you’re basically on a solid state pre-amp but the head is the pedal/hardware or a PC/Mac. Great point. The virtual tools are amazing, but that hybrid setup… hmmm. I may “need” this more than I originally thought!
When you hear Pete Thorn play, you are undoubtedly listening to the VERY, VERY best of show!
I've been looking online at this thing for a couple of weeks. I searched to see if you had reviewed it yet, but no. But I pulled the trigger anyway and bought one a couple of days ago and I'm waiting for it to arrive.
You can't imagine how happy I am now to see this review and your reaction at the A-B comparison! Thanks Pete!
Friend, you can be sure that you have the best electric guitar equipment to capture amplifiers. There is no doubt that it is the best technology of the moment.
Hey Pete, not sure if you have Amplitube as well but if you do, put their version of the Metal Zone in front of your captures. Roll the Distortion allllllllll the way off , set the controls to noon and dial in the volume to taste. This lets you drive the front end with a tiny bit of extra treble. It helps to add back that 1-2% that always sounds "off" about a capture.
There's some weird magic in the Metal Zone (and the real life Boss pedal) that pushes the preamp just right and makes an amp open up.There's no added Distortion. It's definitely not Metal. It's almost like a Volume knob with Pesence. It adds "sparkle".
I had a kemper and it was 99% close to the real thing. Tonex is on par if not better. The best thing about tonex is that you don't need any specific hardware. It's posible to capture amps with your own interface just routing it right. I just tried it and bought the pedal right away.
I have watched your videos and demonstrations on products for years. My 1st video of yours that I saw was several years ago with you doing a RUclips Van Halen song. I started following you since then. Great demonstration on the Tonex Pedal !
Just a public service announcement for anyone who will do a lot of their own captures and want to SPEED up the advanced captures: TONEX will utilize the CUDA cores on an NVidia graphics card/GPU (no AMD, no stock graphics). I can do an Advanced capture in
Cool, I just ordered ToneX. Lucky I have a 3080. Question though did you upgrade your computers sound card for better use of this software?
Interesting device. It's close. It seems to use a tech that's similar to the way that IRs are captured. Thanx for your work Pete. I still use a reactive load box into a Atomic Ampli-Firebox that hosts only IRs. One of the best tricks you taught me.
Man, you look like you're having fun! I loved when you laughed and said, "It's really really really good!", when you were comparing the Marshall capture to the real thing.
It was cool to see you at Mike Landau show last night. Thanks for being a down to earth musician.
Love your channel Pete! On a video this long, you might want to consider chapter markers. It's as simple as putting the start times into your Description box I.E. 00:00 Music Intro 01:34 Introduction etc. (I just found this myself) 😉
Good suggestion, I should really get into doing that.
@@PeteThorn I don't know if I am biased or not but those were some of your best tones ever, sort of. Look I love tube and ss amps no doubt, I love some of your old videos and actually, suhr sl67, suhr badger stuff, can't be beat. Soldano's as well. But this pedal almost got effortless-ly hi end sounding without much to criticize and the price is another thing.
Keep up the good work.
PS after all this stuff, local venues and several hi dollar bands and still the best (hi gain, hey I love metal) came from those who gigged with helixes, even the soundguys confirmed it. Sometimes hi volume can be its own thing lol. Go figure.
Bingo and dead on, I am so glad you made this video with this product. I really enjoy playing but I'm done with my large tube amps. Too heavy, expensive tubes, and God forbid you need work done on one. It's horrible to find a good amp tech, and if you move around (like me for work) you may have to ship it to get it repaired, and I have. So honestly this tool is a no brainer, just got one and going full deep dive. Last big amp to go w/in the month was my Mesa Boogie, all but a small Fender tube amp is left. Again, thanks and great video. Cheers!!
Pete… my goodness this was the coolest demo track I’ve heard you do! Please sell this tune! I love it!
I have many of these synthesizers, effects processors, starting with my Roland GR1.. echoplex..vox cry baby, fuzz pedal, mxr blue box, sustainer, phase 90, Yamaha DG stomp, My Johnson multi effects pedal, not forgetting my amplifiers with built in effects like my Hughes and Kettner Zen amp, my vox VT 30, my fender cyber twin.. my first digital effects amp, crate DX 212, which was the easiest to work and recall settings that you have dialed in and want to recall instantly..
my fender cyber twin is so complicated, I have given up on ever finding the same tone or effects blends a second time. That’s one thing about these digital effects, they sound different even if you save them, when you recall them, they don’t sound the same..
I still have most of that equipment I mentioned. But I am finding that my Yamaha DG stump pedal running through one of my tube amplifiers like my Peavey classic 30 or my Peavey Classics 50 or my Deltablues tube amplifiers is enough..
I bought my DG stomp pedal one Sunday morning on a closeout price for $99 free shipping about 20 years ago. I see them selling now used on eBay for $300. There’s a reason..
A lot of these boxes have so many variations, effects,tones- a lot like having cable tv with 300+ channels, and you cant find anything you like to watch.. 95% of the sounds these effects boxes can produce, are never used, just like cable tv.. you have 300 channels, but you only have 20 channels on your favorites list..
Great review! Thanks, Pete.
I thought this was a Just Another newbie when this hit street but I think this Tone X & software is Devicealicious.. Great demo Peter
Thanks for mentioning "feel". This very rarely gets mentioned in regards to captures, etc and I find it incredibly important. Cool video Pete
Hi Pete. Need you to do a Review of the Hughes & Kettner Ampman Modern. Tonex looks cool .
Holy sh*t those captures sound close to the real thing! In some other demo videos with blind tests I could tell which was real and which the tonex quite easily. But here... man. I sometimes don't even hear that Pete is switching. Great video Pete, as always. 😎
Those are really great sounding Captures you made. Having a hardware box you can import and bring your Captures with you was a smart move by IK Multimedia. There is a totally free open Software called NAM that does the same thing, but without a portable unit. I wouldn't be surprised if some Modelers will be be able to use NAM captures in the not too distant future.
I may be mistaken, but I thought I saw someone mention that Line 6 is working on implementing a NAM loader into their units. Also, Brian Wampler mentioned working on something using NAM to create software for his pedals. Great stuff coming for sure!
This was really well done! A lot of us don’t have a big selection of amps and even if we did we might not have the skills to record them well. Seems like this can be a real help. I’ve actually learned some things capturing my Dr Z and Princeton but the captures that come with it are great. Especially Joe Bonnamasa’s Dumble!
Really nice job working through and sharing all of this. Thanks, Pete!
A very big thank you for showing the process!!! You really do create some of the very best videos on guitar gear that are clear, understandable and of course your playing is off the charts great. Huge props!
Thanks for another solid video, Pete… love your content and especially your playing, man.
You really show what various instruments and equipment can do, and it’s super helpful.
I appreciate that!
I've been hearing about this affordable device... great video Pete! 🤘🎸😎
I am playing in Taiwan now. Met you at Viper. Best to you sir.
Can't wait for your captures!
Such a great video Pete! Just bought the Tonex so I'm gonna' need to buy those captures off of you. 😉 They sound amazing!
Pete I really enjoyed the video & demo of the ToneX. I'm impressed with all the tones & your playing with this device. Very nice job!!
That is seriously good playing at the beginning of the video. ❤ thank you for such a detailed review.
Loved the demo, Pete. Can’t wait to dive into it myself. Great stuff, as usual!
I’ve watched so many vids on this, and I’ve been procrastinating over it. But after this I feel educated enough to go ahead. Great vid, killer sounds.
Looking forward to trying out your amps, your tone is always so on point.
Always cool stuff on your videos, never boring! Thanks, Pete!
Yikes…. Well first off Pete this is a great video you did a superb job or something that’s too freaking complicated for an old geezer like me… 62 years old been playing since I’ve been 10… It’s not that I’ve not owned multi effects… Late 80s I had the first one… Roland GP8 then Yamaha GEP50. Fast forward to all the zoom stuff you name it… 16 had a big wreck dude last thing I had was an Eleven rack. For a while I borrowed a friends Line 6 stomp, sweet Time delay stuff gain patches left me cold which they have on every multi effects piece I’ve ever had… I don’t think I’m alone now just guys my age I’ve talk to younger dudes seems to be a growing contingent let’s say I don’t need 100 patches, I don’t need 50 I don’t need 25 I need three or four maybe five… So a grouping Of various pedals… Maybe with a switcher yeah way better tone not so complicated just amazing this technology is this far down the line and it’s still so freaking complicated… Spend so much time with it and that’s time… Not playing
If you haven't already, make sure to update the software and the pedal firmware. They recently added a built-in tuner for the pedal and made the ToneX software work better.
Sounds great Pete, I've been a fan for years and you never fail to impress. Your video for the HX Stomp inspired me to get pick one up, unfortunately I don't possess a stable of cool tube amps to capture, but this is a pretty cool piece of gear nonetheless. It's a great time to be a guitar player with respect to all of the cool technology we can use.
Pete …….YOU are the man. Such Killer groove and melodic feel. Amazing technique. I also appreciate this video as well.
Thanks!
Great tool for cover bands where a guitarist, keyboard player, or bassist wants to get closer to original amplified tones and not carry around a truckload of amps and pedals!! Great run through Pete, shows enough to get interested!!
*This sounds great!!! I’m looking forward to another raise soon at work and buying more gear. 🏆 Your demos are always on point. I’ve been watching at least for 3 years and these videos are informative yet entertaining.*
I just had a chance to watch this whole demo. Just - WOW! An amazing piece of gear! Also, your demo song really shines a light on how great this sounds, and your basic tutorial is wonderful. Thanks for this demo - I hope you were well compensated, because I think you have sold at least several dozen!
Thank u!
This vid sold a unit!! Amazing as always, Pete!
Thanks for the in depth review! I believe this will actually help people with this tech,I know it did me and I have had it since it debuted .Kudos to you and don’t stop playing
thanks for all you do Pete enjoyed the tour of Tonex
I recently purchased this pedal, .... after having the free, computer-based version. I am enjoying the process of learning the pedal and discovering what I can do with it. For me, it is a must-have device, especially for those gigs where stage volume has to be very controlled. My concern was the "feel" of using this technology: the feel of the strings under my fingers and how the strings respond to what I do with my pick, fingers and palm mutes .... it's not the same as using a cranked tube amp ... clean or dirty. Making a living as a playing-musician in the late 60s, 70s, and 80s, using ONLY high quality tube amps ... my technique has been burned into my brain ... based on the interaction between me, my guitar and my amp .... and the environment. That's very inspirational on stage, but when that chemistry and those dynamics have been altered, as is the case with using digital and modeling tech, it can interfere with the dynamics and energy I used to rely on. Having said that, I do not regret the purchase ... as I said, it is a "must have" for a working electric guitar player. I had some technical problems that required the replacement of my first pedal and problems with setting up the replacement pedal. IK Multimedia Tech Support could not be reached by phone, and it took them a while to get to me by email. That delayed being able to actually start using the pedal ... but, as of this week, it's all up and running. Great product and a good company in my opinion.
Great video; I love my Tonex pedal. I'd definitely buy a capture pack
Awesome demo, very much looking forwards to the pack!
Cool to see the capturing progress. I think I’ll just be buying IRs.
That thing is insane! I have scaled back to only 2-amps (lost my basement studio when we moved to Texas), but it looks like others may have filled the gap with all of their samples. I have just started working with the IK stuff (iRig HD 2) and I must say, I am quite blown away. Direct into my PA and it sounds amazing! Great job on the review!!
Thanks Pete for making this VID. I'm still using my Line 6 HELIX ( Floor ) I saw this @ NAMM. For me I own Zero AMP/CAB Yet I see how this is really Great!
Thanks for your videos Pete, you are a great person and a great musician!
Thank u! 🙏
Amazing sounds and great explanation of things. Hope to see your capture pack soon!
Best video I have seen on Tonex software and pedal. Very impressive system and technology. Great work!! I look forward to buy your captures.
Thanks, it took a long time to put this one together (because of the time needed to dial in the captures etc) so I’m glad you like it!
When will your captures be available? I really liked the sounds you were getting!
I feel like this could be a great product for someone who is never going do any captures and just wants to purchase captures from pros like Pete.
had mine a few weeks now , its a bit of a learning curve but what an incredible pedal . to be able to use multiple amazing amps and now reverb , delay and modulations at home or on stage is fantastic , thinking of pairing it with a helix fx unit and there is a rig right there . Pete you have some great amps and being able to use them all with that pedal must be a game changer ?
Pete I’m so glad you’re doing this demo ! I just bought a TONEX Pedal and your the one I’ve been waiting for to try it out Thanks. Vic from Vancouver Canada.
Another "two for the price of one" video Pete - we get to hear you play some great stuff and also get a really good review of the product that you're looking at. Super stuff - thanks!
That intro song was just unbelievable! Great great note choice, original, emotional JUST KILLER 🤘🤘😎😎
Thank u!
That candy apple red Suhr is gorgeous.
you have a great sense of composition. Song after song. l would love to buy an instrumental cd/vinyl of all these great pedal demo songs. Love the channel.
Thank you!! :)
Yes, I would purchase these captures!
Loved that intro piece. Superb!
IK Multimedia have a lot of good stuff and ToneX is no exception, especially in bringing this technology to the common man. Soundwise I'm not all that impressed though so far. I have no real need to capture anything of my own gear and most of the captures I've tried, both free and paid for sound OK at best. But even in the good ones there is that digital fizzle that you don't seem to be able to escape in any amp sim, not even my Axe FX III. And in ToneX this is even more pronounced than in a regular amp sim. I will try (buy?) Pete's captures when they become available, but for now ToneX will not be used on any serious recordings of mine.
Pete could play on a fisher price guitar amp and I bet it sounds good.
Needs to form a Fisher Price band with Jack Black on that toy saxophone
Hence, it’s the player and not the gear. Gear helps but it comes down to the player.
Love his vids !!!
Very informative !!!
Glad there is something out there that will preserve the tube amps that are going extinct. Getting harder to find tubes and cost for good ones is really high. I’m thinking about getting a Tonex. Thanks for the video!
Beautiful playing Pete at the beginning ! Cheers from Quebec !
Thanks!
I have an original Jim Kelley! I love it. I have it captured several times in my Quad Cortex. I think I heard that John Suhr was going to make Jim Kelleys. Great sounds and playing! I have the Tonex software and I'll eventually get around to making plug-ins from my amps.
Suhr did indeed make them for a number of years, including this one!
You did a great job of explaining using the IK Multimedia Tone X. But, it came across to me like a foreign language. Not complaining just saying I did not really understand all the connections. Thanks for presenting it.
Great review!!! When your "capture pack" will be available?
Soon! June I think
Love the tone he has on the intro & wish we could have access to that tone!
You will, soon! I will be selling the captures I made via the IK Tone X store
That tele looks amazing!
