  • in this video, I compare the Strymon Iridium to the new Amp and IR cabinet offering from Boss the IR-200.
Hers what Strymon say about the Iridium
The pedal-sized Strymon Iridium gives you the tube staging, tone stack, and touch response of three iconic amplifiers, each with three corresponding cabinet choices, all in a line-level stereo output, which you can send straight to FOH - no amp required. Iridium’s Class A JFET preamp handles your guitar and stomps just like a true tube amp. Its analog front end feeds a powerful 2-stage DSP processor that carefully approximates the tube bias, harmonic breakup, cone compression, and EQ interaction of some of your favorite front ends. Whether you’re playing the blues through a chunky American 1 x 12-inch or raising the roof through a dimed British high-watt amp, the Strymon feels and handles much like your favorite stacks and combos. A preset switch gives the Iridium the functionality of a 2-channel amp for clean/dirty applications, with an additional 300 accessible via MIDI switch. Meanwhile, a front headphone jack lets you monitor yourself directly from the stage - no in-ears required.
Heres what Boss say about the IR-200
Introducing the IR-200, the most advanced compact amp/IR solution available. This powerhouse stomp brings next-level performance to direct sound for guitar and bass, offering exceptional audio quality, premium amps, deep sound shaping, and instant sound recall with 128 memories. Over 150 hi-res cab impulse responses from BOSS and Celestion Digital are on board, plus 128 locations for loading your own mono or stereo IRs.
The IR-200 turns your pedalboard into a self-contained direct sound solution for live playing, studio recording, and practice. It delivers massive amp tones from a small footprint and smoothly integrates with all your favorite pedals, including stereo mod, delay, and reverb effects. And once you craft your tones, you can send them to a stage amp, house PA, computer recording system, or headphones-or all at once.
This is a sponsored video as Boss have provided the pedal but the thoughts and comments are my own.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

There are so many variables that are different between the two units, and it's tough to really judge from a side by side comparison. From experience, the IR-200 comes with some pretty in-your-face presets, but once you start dialing in your own custom tones, things start to chill out a bit (in a good way!). I think that the JC-120 modeling on the IR-200 is awesome. For me, that JC palate plus the stereo effects loop is such a home run for a pedalboard ampless set up.

A video with a decisive opinion!? Thumbs up. Listening on good headphones the IR-200 was clearly in a different league, which is an issue for Strymon given the price similarities. People like to complain about menu diving but with IR's its basically required anyway and I feel there's a much easier path back to good tones than you might find on a different Boss effect pedal.

12:28 that some 20 seconds lick is pretty darn great! The bends are spot on and with vibrato too! I'm not a great guitarist, but hearing things like this is a great reference on how to use bends and vibrato. Using my ears and letting loose, get into the feeling!

Great review! I've been using the Strymon Iridium on tour for venues with capacity 800-2000 this spring. Iridium takes pedals very well, just like a real amp. Took some time getting used to the in-ear monitoring since we all use silent rigs, but it sounds absolutely amazing from a FOH point of view.

The sounds are highly dependent on the ir. What if you load the exact same ir’s in both units and then compare? The influence of the amp modeling will then show.

Exactly, found that out with my GT-1000 Core once I loaded in extra IR's. For any given amp choice/settings you get wildly differing tones just by switching the IR.

That's really the problem I have with a lot of these comparison videos.
The ir aims to replicate the characteristics of the speaker, which as the thing actually making the sound has the largest impact on the sound. So of course the ir's would play a huge role in how these pedals would sound, but I cant think of a single video where they messed with the ir's; its all just been comparing the amp side of things, and on that front I'm very much willing to believe that if the iridium comes stock with some absolutely stunning ir's compared to the competition then of course people will continue to say it sounds better in these videos that dont mess with the ir's.
I want to see an "absolutely everything as equal as it can be" comparison.

I've done stereo from the Iridium into 2 passive DI's, stereo into active DI's, and mono to both as well. Taste is individual so for what it’s worth, I have owned both (along with a Kemper, Helix rack) but I cannot help but feel there is a heavy bias in the Studio Rat videos towards the Boss. There needs to be full disclosure who is paying for what here. I looked up other videos where he compare the Boss and spends the whole video telling you what you’re hearing. Hmm….
I say this because, in my experience, the Boss sounded thin and synthetic while the Iridium sounded warmer and more organic. No, not a real amp or a Fractal 3 but good enough for most use cases. Good playing in a song mix most people would never know the difference soundwise so it comes down to practicality for your particular setup. The only thing I really like about the Boss was that its OS and layout and some nice reverb. The Iridium also can take stereo panned cab sims by the way and you can audition cab sims “live” before saving them to the device - something the Boss cannot do with their clunky IR software program.

There is far less tweaking available in the ME90 in regards to eq, microphones, distance, cabinets etc. The IR200 also lets you use two different amps simultaneously as a blend. And lastly, the processor in the IR is far more powerful. Hope that helps 🙂

The Strymon Iridium has limitations (which might not be a bad thing) and I needed to get a Strymon Flint for Reverb and Tremelo but I have found the sound to be very realistic. I like all analogue controls with no screen. The Boss IR200 didn't convince me sound wise and there are too many options so a lot of time is wasted chasing a sound. But both are excellent and it is down to personal preference and the Strymon Iridium works for me.

It sounds anolog (I don’t know if it truly is) and the Boss actually sounds digital and much more polite, smooth and polished. It seems to my ears the Iridium would cut through better. which do you like using better amp 1 or IR-200 ?

  • @thecaveofthedead
    @thecaveofthedead 2 года назад +3

I don't know what some commenters are hearing here. The IR200 clearly sounds richer and higher in fidelity to me - more like a real amp in a room. The Iridium may appeal to some because the sounds sound more EQd to my ears - maybe they're better ready to sit in a band mix.
Each of these units has to decide on how it's going to compromise. If we want a fully-featured unit, we'd get a big floor unit. We all want some level of simplicity from a stompbox-sized unit. The Strymon has a lot of features and a small set of very useable amps - super easy to configure. But without significant built-in reverb, and still requiring a drive pedal to get a saturated lead sound, I'd rather take a little more fiddling about with the IR200 and have a pedal that fits in my guitar case but can actually convincingly replace an entire amp rig.

For the Iridium Marshall setting, the Middle knob, when turned up, changes the amp type, so farther right is more like a high gain JCM800. Couple that with maxing the gain knob makes it super saturated, in a good way

How to imply the ac30 on ir200 doesn't sound like ac30 without saying it by asking YOU the audience, allegedly 😉
    IMHO
Diamond amp is the weakest ac30 emulation on the market.
    Clarity?
If it ain't sounding and feel like it there's no point for that.
Ir200 best amp were the tweed and x high gain. I still kinda wish they put x mod in it tho.
The natural is the best pedal platform since it's kinda a warmer jc120 with smooth gain.
Honestly i never been impressed by bogner supersonic sound so I got no say in that.
Btw will you do a bass video of this unit next?

The biggest problem about the iridium and the walrus ac1 is the lacking of a fx loop.
Using verbs and echos in front of overdriven tones is a no-go for me.
The boss people understood that and made a good product.
I would love to see the AC1 have an fx loop so I could use the 2 amp setting with a clean tone on one side and a breakup tone on the other. That would be amazing.
    Cheers.

Mono (guitar) input, effects loop out is mono, trs (stereo) back in. And output stereo. Well thought out. Effects loop needs to be turned on to work for each preset. Don't miss the 3 pos gain switch for all amps, a cool feature also. I use mine every day.

A good comparison of the 2 😊 I like the cleans on the ir200 but not fully sold on the distorted sounds. There’s a whole host of features though that are great but one key point is missing for me which would be a dealbreaker sadly, you can’t use ir’s without the preamp. The iridium can be used just as an ir loader and I’d be using this in conjunction with an hx stomp so lots of amp models already on there that sound better than both. If I didn’t have the stomp then maybe would choose the boss but also like the Strymon…

No doubt digital is the future. It’s almost the present. But not quite, yet. These two boxes are amazing. But still, for my old-fart ears, they’re not ready for prime time, just another step on the way. My DI set up starts with a Frenzel FM tube preamp into an ancient SansAmp GT2 and a Mesa passive DI and into the board. Pure analog bliss.

Tough decision because the Strymon sounds better (also the Walrus ACS1 not in this video, sounds good too). Neither the Walrus nor Strymon have send/return (effects) loop, whereas it looks like the Boss does. I would likely be using such a pedal with headphones a lot for practice and I'd probably want a delay or another reverb pedal or whatever after the amp model's gain sounds but then have the signal out from the headphone jack. With the Strymon, you'd need more stuff to get a headphone/silent practice situation to work.

The ac30 sounds awesome on the iridium. In general the iridium seems to have more midrange, that makes it sound a bit fuller. That's why the tubescreamer doesn't sounds so good with the iridium as greeny emphasizes the mids too.
You said "crispy brightness from a plexi" -? The plexi has huge bass and sounds dull in a room. That's why many old players used it with a dallas range master to have more highs (high mids).
