Exactly. I am the type of person that doesn't like being yelled at by a coach or player. I like having positive motivation in whatever I'm doing. If I am doing something wrong, just talk to me about what I am doing wrong and we can work it out. Having someone yell at me all the time just ruins the experience for me. Some people do like being yelled at because it motivates them and thats fine. Like you said it depends on the person and from what I heard, coach K coaches each player differently.
Perfect coaching style is to mix the two. Encourage them when they make it and let them know what they did wrong when they didn't, if they don't respond then do a little yelling. Just never go balls out yelling unless it is towards the whole team.
Having coached both boys and girls, I'd say that girls need MUCH more positive encouragement than boys. Boys often don't improve nearly as quickly with the soft approach. Girls quickly tune out as the stress level rises, and they usually take the harsh treatment personally.
You could argue that the proband gets warmed up during the first coaching trial or that the order of the trials has an effect. This experiment is highly unscientific. To find a reliable difference you'd need two separated groups (with probably at least 20 people in them) and the same conditions for these people exept the coaching stile. As for the "real" comparison, that's just like comparing two teams from different states, and this decides which country has the alltime better players...
Coach styles never bothered me because I never listened to my coaches, I knew my decision making was top draw, and if my coach shouted at me I'd shout back about something he needed to improve tactically, every time I got banned they would always come back and say we need you to play
my old football coach yelled at me, i was scared that if i didnt did my job well he was gonna yell at me so i always gave 100% we got a new coach now, he doesnt yell, my performance is going down compared with what i was then and i am today
Its good experience to train your focus during actual games when your adrenaline's going and when the fans won't be so encouraging, even at home (or maybe especially at home if you **** up).
doesnt necessarily mean the coaches had any effect, i mean he hit just one more, have him shoot at least 50 for each set, cuz out of ten, it really couldve been the other way around, and it really depends on what type of person you are, some would take the yelling badly and just quit, some as motivation, and its all about your personality here...
But you can also say that Mike Kryzewsky had more success overall has a head coach throughout his career then Bob Knight. Maybe his teams didn't need to win them 3 pts games so much in the end.
Coach K> Bob Knight. In 31 years at Duke hes got 4 national championships, 11 final four apperances, 12 ACC regular season titles, 13 ACC Championships, and a record of 827-225 for a .786 win percentage. Bob Knight in 43 years as a coach, had 3 national championships, 1 NIT championship and 11 Big 10 championships and 5 final fours. and a record of 902-371 for a win percentage of .708. Idk about you but Coach K's a better coach. Just look at the numbers.
Some people react better to different coaching styles though. That guy obviously didn't get affected, but other guys would get scared shitless by the aggressive coach, and just perform crap.
Okay, the examples with Coach Knight and Coach K are complete bullshit. Free throw percentage is not based on coaching technique. Several other factors would have to be brought to the table such as Stamina, Fatigue, technique, follow through, angle of release, and several other factors than just coaching technique. And as for win percentage decided by 3 points or less, Duke dominates most of their opponents, lowering the percentage of games won by 3 points or less. Simple. Basketball is a game that lives and dies on the rule of composure and endurance. Throwing a hissy fit makes you only lose composure and tests how much more you can take. (Hence the science behind a mental breakdown.)
My opinion... First... Not really an opinion but anyway... I'm half soft and half hard as a leader in sports most of it, hockey ball... When somebody's doing good, I'll be cool and still encouraging. But when somebody doesn't make efforts or is playing like crap, I'll be a little bit rude and maybe I'll be angry. If somebody make a mistake BUT tried and made efforts, that's another story. I forgive mistakes if you try. Now... The ''vulgar'' coach is kinda exagerating by swearing and yell him like he's a good for nothing... Even if he's right for the knees and the elbows... There's a limit to be rude like this... I do love tough coaches cause there're able to motivate players to be BETTER but that kind of coaching style... Too much...
wow! interesting! but in my opinion, i think the more free throws you make or attempt, the warmer and more confident u get at making free throws, however, the aggressive coach is right, this dudes mechanics are so horrible! i can bet he was most likely not a good free throw shooter, u have to take in to affect, that this isn't a live game! and there arn't thousands of fans being loud and annoying!
This is not good science. Athletes have been socialized into accepting negative feedback as normal and necessary. For some of the reasons they mention such as arousal (tension) athletes under stress under perform. There is so much evidence of this..I am disappointed a sport science show seems to support a poor conclusion based on a poor experiment...(what about the warm up of shooting the first 10 for example..is just one of many problems.
I love the reaction from the aggressive coach when the dude starts making shots. LMAO!

Okay, so free throws are the only aspect decided by coaches encouragement?
Coach K > Whoever the heck that other guy was
That is AMAZING!
Having coached both boys and girls, I'd say that girls need MUCH more positive encouragement than boys. Boys often don't improve nearly as quickly with the soft approach. Girls quickly tune out as the stress level rises, and they usually take the harsh treatment personally.
It's good to have one nice coach and one really mean coach
hahah i'd probably start laughing with the second coach. then probably start crying shortly afterwards..
You could argue that the proband gets warmed up during the first coaching trial or that the order of the trials has an effect.

Madness? This is BOBBY KNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!

lols i love how they show coach k as the "nice fatherly coach".

This is not the right way to determine whether or not which coaching style is best.
you can tell which coach is which style just by looking at them
Coach K has more rings.
and look who has the most wins now (as in since your comment)! (Go Coach K)
Coach K> Bob Knight. I suppose Coach K did not need to win so many 3pts games in the end because his teams were generally, better at everything else.
i rather have a supportive coach...than a Barking Coach. i shall prove this thing wrong. haha.
Cool as a cucumber lol
Some people react better to different coaching styles though. That guy obviously didn't get affected, but other guys would get scared shitless by the aggressive coach, and just perform crap.
@broncofan12312 how do you know? You wasn't there
even tho you wanna knock the shit out of your caoch cause he all up in your face
i rather get yelled at for what im doing rong
LOL
Coach Hines !!!
every player reacts differently to different situations and different "nourishing" not a really good test
good one xDDDDDDD
BEND THOSE FUC#ING KNEES! What kind of coach does that
It depends on the athlete and how they take it...
i love how they bleeped out crap
yeah i agree
hahhha wow i wish my coach was lyk the second coach so i can sock him in the face
If they really want to find the answer, do it in the middle of a game xD
It's okay kid everyone get's yelled at by George Carlin
The bottom line is good playera
The bottom line is good coaches should know who needs encouragement through yelling and those who do not.

prolly 2 slow camera n skipped or smthn
Ed Madec was my teammate for two seasons and he is a great coach....check out my video...cc
yea but this is so biased he came into it cold n unwarmed up then once he got a feel for the rim he got to shoot his second set
wow! interesting! but in my opinion, i think the more free throws you make or attempt, the warmer and more confident u get at making free throws, however, the aggressive coach is right, this dudes mechanics are so horrible! i can bet he was most likely not a good free throw shooter, u have to take in to affect, that this isn't a live game! and there arn't thousands of fans being loud and annoying!
this is all subjective to a persons own psyche
The mean coach is right though... His elbow was way out... Awful form
hahaha! coaching is not a short term thing... This experiment design is full of bias!

i thought the black coach was the mean one. my white coach has always been nice than my black coach
