  • Out of Europe and falling down the Premier League, Newcastle United's season is in serious danger of falling apart. But as they continue to grow as a football club in the long term, Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips could offer them some solutions in the short term.

The tiredness matters when trying to play in that intense way, but of course that same constant intensity causes the tiredness and injuries in the first place. This is why the charges against Man City are significant - if one team can just buy unlimited top quality players then the others, particularly NU, Spurs and Liverpool (last season) get burnt out trying to keep up with them. There's no way Philips would have been sat on the bench for two whole seasons for any other club; they would have been forced to play him at some point. City just splash another 60 mil on someone Pep thinks is better than him.

Tonali, Barnes, Murphy, Pope, Botman, Anderson - these were all freak injuries / suspension and not in any way due to the level of intensity we play at. Although it is true that the level of intensity we play at does come with a greater risk of producing injuries, we have just been exceptionally unlucky with the above players all going down and limiting our ability to manage the others' fatigue.

That crumple transition at the start was clean AF. As for the analysis, I'm right with you. I was in the Leazes for the Forest shambles and the amount of space they had on the break was ridiculous. Someone who can shield the defense is a must to cope with that.

Suggest some of these negative fans on here listen to Klopp's press conference when asked about Newcastle and injuries. His assessment is spot on - games every three days only allows time for recovery - no training/tactics, same players playing for weeks because of no available rotation, getting mentally and physically fatigued and injured, plus injured players coming back not match fit/sharp. It's SO obvious...so cut them all some slack...
Miggy, Gordon and Bruno have had NO respite in that time...Botman, Burn and Longstaff still not match sharp and probably back a bit too soon. It's a no-win situation that should hopefully get better in the New Year...
Phillips would certainly add to squad depth - but our poor forwards are the ones really feeling the strain...

@anon-zk6iz he doesn't make terrible substitutions all the time. He is sometimes too conservative when it comes to substitutions, but until very recently the subs bench was lined with goalkeepers and kids, due to the extensive injury list.
He doesn't 'just play his favourites' either. He is tending to pick players who have already demonstrated their abilities last season. Burn isn't playing very well at the moment, but he was an integral part of one of the best defensive records in the league last season. I do think he should give the other players more game time, but your comment is a grossly reductive oversimplification, which ignores the consequences of the injury crisis, and is simply untrue.

The major problem is that Trippier is 32 and Schar is 31 and both play on the same side. Schar is nororious for being very lazy when directly attacked both aerially or via strength based play. And Trippier has just aged out of being able to track back.
Alot of their goals are leaking because these two players are put in bad positions after Bruno has commited to the attack. Kalvin Phillips solves nothing. Because at the end of the day Trippier needs to move into the 6 role, and Bruno needs to move forward. They also need to go get a Roylles-Royce CB to replace Schlar who's contract is up this offseason.

We did well last year because the lads worked there b@llox off as a team and pressed non stop, creating most of our goals from pressing the opposition into mistakes. Games against Luton, Forest we could have easily played a patient build up game with a 4-2-3-1 and grinded out results against them both including the Bournemouth and Everton games, 4 games we were more than capable of avoiding defeat with the right set up. Another problem is, opponents are analysing our games and know our weaknesses. Last season it was new, this season teams are set up to stifle us and expose our weaknesses.

Fantastic analysis and showen very well. It has bothered me this season why we have pesisted with same system when the individual errors are also shouting out the same issue ie trips vs everton panics as no midfielder in the middle as still trying to get back.. then second the amount of times once opposing side gets inbehind bruno on transition we are left outnumbered because trips is always high up for his quality in attack. We get left out numbered so often because of it. Sadly i dont have a graph or the interlet to articulate it like yourself on a comment lol

Sadly the Saudi fund aren’t giving us any more money so we aren’t buying anyone this window! How amazing isn’t it! Howe is up for a 5 year project and is probably being sacked about 18 months into it! We only get money when we win, this is rediculouse they don’t know we need a larger squad to win. This could go terribly wrong for the club.

I get what youre trying to say, but why exactly can't longstaff or pillock be instructed to cover for bruno G when he moves in the final third? I know Phillips is probably more defensive minded, however if the key take away is for phillips to be the deepest midfielder when we overload in attack, then we should actually get longstaff to sit in front of the centre halfs.
In my opinion, we are losing points more this season because teams play us on the counter, we have yet to learn how to deal with teams content to sit back and pick apart our overloads. Not having a settled defensive line with the injuries is always going to make it harder. The defence needs to be settled.

I agree with the missing 6. Tonali was going to be that guy. Newcastle wouldn’t just want a 6 tho, we want a 6 who can attack.
Funnily enough, I think Schar can be that guy for short term.

So why hasn't a temp solution been to swap Bruno with Longstaff in the 6 to keep that defensive structure? Bruno can come in as a double pivot anyway when playing out from the back, but at least going forward Longstaff can prevent the counter.

    • @dddgtsd

Joelinton is a rare breed in terms of what he offers and Longstaff is a local lad playing way above his standard, I think they're hard players to replicate. They also sort of already did this with Tonali, another hybrid 8 who can work hard but also offer a bit of creativity. Do we want another player like that that'll cost us 25-40m and on big wages when we really need to be improving not just duplicating what we have? I get what you're saying though, we need another body, Phillips with loan and an option would be perfect but City will want money.

Fatigue or tiredness is ‘fixed’ by resting a player. However, if everyone injured then you can’t fix the problem. The state of Miggy is a case in point. He’s woefully out of form but he can’t be rested because there is literally - not figuratively - no one to replace him. No one. Nada. Duck egg.
The only option now - as in right now - is to maybe put Gordon there and put JoeLinton on the left and retain wee Louie in the centre.
There is more to injuries than just the injured player, in other words.

Yeah we didn't really need a video on this subject. The top and bottom of it is, we have played the same players over and over again, to the point they are all blowing out their arses. The most reliable of pros are making stupid decisions (the main culprit being tripps). I honestly believe this is going to have a knock on effect for the whole season. I know there was other reasons given other that tiredness in this video, but this is the main reason i believe its solely down to injuries. Take all the injuries we have had and give them to any other club in the league, and they would struggle to get any results whatsoever.

We also need a decent keeper, if we're going to requalify for Europe 😢. Ramsdale on loan, with an option to buy ? Or De Gea on a six month contract with an option to extend ? Pope's shoulder could pop out again at any time, so we need equable back-up. And of course, a shady 'fixer' behind the scenes at UEFA, just like Roman Abramovic, Sheikh Mansour and the Glazers have had over the last decade or so, while they were immune to FFP. 😉

Newcastle dont need to sack howe what they need to do is bring in a proper manager like jose and allow howe to be the head coach. He is a brilliant coach probably one of the best in the world in terms of getting the very best out of players. But in terms of game management howe is not yet at the level where he can be taking on pep and klopp. But imagine with jose and howe and how much eddie could learn. The type of person eddie is i think he will become one of the greats. Maybe become the best british manager since fergie. Maybe even the best english manager since wor sir bobby.

One thing overlooked, Newcastle managed games *time wasted* last season, with typically only 55 mins worth of ball in play. The added time and clamp down on time-wasting has impacted Newcastle more than anything. Sustaining that intensity for longer each game leads to injuries.
