  • With a return leg at Stamford Bridge to come, Chelsea trail Middlesbrough 1-0, setting up a potentially enormous cup shock. But despite missing a selection of big chances, Chelsea's biggest problem was, once again, how difficult they found it to play through an allegedly 'weaker' opponent.

Even enzo can receive deep . He can be the deepest receiver because he’s quite press resistant, and he usually already has the pass pre planned along with the skill to execute it; we saw him do it a lot last season. The problem is, the center backs just don’t pass to either of them, and sometimes they are both too far away from the center backs… but that is all doen to the coach … poch just doesn’t know what he’s doing with them

Deluded fans think Chelsea can be a cohesive team after a total rebuild. It's a few windows and building chemistry new identity and direction especially after the numbers of young inexperienced players. Clearly the owner and board are planning for the future. Right now we need 2 to 3 experienced players to challenge now while still developing younger talent. ST is one Winger is second as Sterling had been inconsistent as an experienced player. Third injuries are an issue the playing of Colwill at LB is insane majority of goals conceded are from crosses Gusto has done well but there's a clear problem. Lastly GK Petrovich has done well but its insane that the first choice GK Sanchez performed so poorly. If you invest in youth or younger players you got to allow time. Under Roman we complained why we ain't giving youth an opportunity now we complain about results unfortunately we have to find tge right balance between experience and inexperience if we want inexperience we gave you give them time Balance between these 2 is crucial. Remember youth doesn't necessarily mean inexperience as a 21 year old could have 3 years experience whereas another 21 year old could have no experience.

It's up to the manager to instill these patterns of play into the team. There's a lot of talk about inexperience but if a manager gives players instructions, they will play well. Poch is just not doing that.

The main issue is very clear when replaying the games and re-watching build-up sequences.
These players don't know each other. Too often the ball is sent to the wrong foot and the moment is lost. You need to be incisive to break down a good low block, and Chelsea midfielders and forwards can't string two forward passes together.
It sucks, but what this squad needs more than anything is time on the field together.

Excellent description of what occurred, I am a Boro fan, and cannot believe how Chelsea just didnt have a plan to beat us. Parking the bus, is ugly, more so if your opposition is winning. But you need to play neat triangles, and move players around.
One thing they could have done is push one of the two central midfielders behind the strikers putting more players inside the oppositions block. Its almost like they are instructed to stay within certain boundaries.
I still think the second leg is tricky for us, as 90 mins parking the bus could be a hard evening to both play, and watch.

@@Juicerock12 Hard to believe it is Poch when his use of Dembele, Schneiderlin and Veratti is pretty much how he is supposed to be using Caicedo/Enzo in terms of ball progressing. Especially Dembele who, imo, was the heart of his Spurs team.
Chelsea even pulled a 3 pass move that went from Disasi, Caicedo to Palmer and resulted in a very good chance.
It just seems like the CBs are too risk averse to pass into the midfield in the first place. Colwill and Silva both specialize in long balls and switches, with Colwill being too young to have a perfectly nuanced passing game, and Silva being too old to mould almost. Disasi seems to create those passes to midfield more than anyone else, and he is by any metric the worst of them all on the ball. He created the pass to Jackson that resulted in Palmer's second against Luton, and the pass I referred to earlier.
Generic statement, but the reason Poch's development timeline looks slow right now is likely because he's had to focus on too many footballing problems simultaneously. Usually, Chelsea managers walked in, had a solid defense to work with and found a new formula to counter-attack and won titles, got sacked after that formula stopped working. New manager comes in, repeat. Sacking Poch will make things worse, who is realistically available in the market that has had a better record setting up an attack than him?
People saying Mourinho are daft because he's never succeeded at a club where he wasn't spoon-fed a set of world class CBs to build his team based on. Roma literally have zero unpredictability about them in attacking play, neither did his United and Spurs teams.

Pochettino is not using his fullbacks (Colwill at LB) so the overlap is not an option, he doesn't want enzo in his double pivot because he wants his deepest midfielders to run up and down the pitch ( he is not interested in controlling a game, just attack on sight.)
So his next idea is to put enzo in the 10 CAM position which is not the best idea because his best attributes are highlighted in build up play, receiving the ball from defense being press resistant and being able to pick a pass cross field to runners up front.
His front line is static (as you highlighted in the video, which scares me as a fan because what does that tell us about training)
And his in-game management is shocking (when we were chasing games, he just panics and just throws players on, hoping it'll all work out.)

I was really positive when Poch took over, but he's just not finding a way to instil any team spirit and players just seem clueless. Honestly not sure how Chelsea can build from this, it seems more likely that it'll get worse before there's any improvement.
Even a signing like Osimhen won't immediately save us, I'd expect his form to drop off much like all the rest. Palmer came in with something prove but his confidence looks like it's fading away.

The problem of breaking down a low block is exactly what happened towards the end of Poch's time at Tottenham as well. It was always stressful going against teams lower in the table because it was always 90 minutes of horseshoe around the box with nobody moving off the ball to make space. The whole match was waiting for that one moment of brilliance from something like a Son curler from outside the box or an Eriksen free kick in stoppage time. Often it never came and so many points were dropped in low scoring games against relegation threatened teams who were well organized and sat with 10 men in the box for 90 minutes.

He's far better at that than he is at whatever the hell Pochettino is asking him to do right now. He should be playing deep alongside Caicedo setting the tempo from midfield. Instead, he spends most of his time standing next to the striker. Incredible he's managing to waste the talents of two £100m elite midfielders in two totally different ways. No real reason for him to still be in post to be honest. He's so far out of his depth, worse than Potter.

I totally disagree about it being a problem that Enzo's average positioning is deeper than Caicedo. Enzo has a Kroos-like profile and is able to take up the space of the LB (LCB in buildup) and make long, accurate passes in the 1st phase of buildup. However, this does not mean that Poch is using Caicedo to his full potential. Chelsea's CBs should definitely be looking to put balls into the middle of the field to find Caicedo when possible. Poch needs to be sacked due to abysmal tactics and his misuse of incredible talents, but not until there is a long-term, tactically-astute replacement available. Thus, we wait till the end of the season and hope a European position is secured, and convince Osimhen to join the club.

The owners are just being reactive and not proactive. They will only sack him if we lose to Middlesborough at home. Even if we do make it to Wembley, we don’t have a chance against Klopp cuz Poch is clueless. His pressing structure is ass, barely any rotational play, misprofiling multiple players, doesn’t want to take risks and go centrally. If we want to actually have a chance of winning the EFL and maybe getting Europe. Hansi Flick as an interim until the end of the season is a shout. He doesn’t need time, he got results immediately with Bayern. Just need someone that gives faith to the fans to trust in the process by implementing a clear and distinct style of play

Problem is a Young team and very bad offensive strategien… we PLAY bad and slow! So its so Easy to defend and most of our chances come from mistakes by opponents… bad tactics from the manager and a very slow build up is good when you lead like City, Real and when Barca were good. What is possesion if you cant score or get Big chances…..

I don't think Poch uses the direct midfield passing lane a lot even when at Tottenham, Dier / Dembele spreads the balls wide to WBs who overlap with Wingers to cross or pullback pass in the box. It requires them to have mutual understanding and are used to playing with each other. Not a lot of teams are able to break the low block like Pep's team who constantly rotate in the box to lead players out of position.
The past few coaches all set up the front line to be very rigid / discipline to wait for chance of overlap and cross instead of being fluid to rotate and create chances for anyone to run through . I feel that Sterling / Palmer coming from Man City should be able to influence the rest in giving that extra effort to rotate freely so that the attack can be more deadly. I know it requires a lot of knowing who is where and will run where and where to pass but if this can be done for a few straight games, it will discourage teams to use low block against Chelsea and make them come out to play. I'm not saying we must keep it up for the whole season, even for a young team, i don't think they have the legs to do it every 100+ mins weekly. Just let them know we have a plan to overcome low block and teams will not do it against us that frequently.

    • @KidCudi72
      @KidCudi72 5 месяцев назад +3

He shouldn't have to do that, but Chelsea fans that think he's the worst striker in the world are in for a rude awakening. Without Jackson dropping deep, turning and running past defenders we have no way of moving the ball from the middle to the final third. It's Jackson's individual brilliance alone. He is an unbelievably smart and strong footballer. Just needs to corral his finishing.

Hey Adam, thanks for yet another insightful video on Chelsea's attacking issues! As a fan, I tend to believe the easy explanations of too many chances wasted (look at the xG! etc.). It is essential to keep in mind the broader picture: these chances were not exactly created.
What is happening to Enzo, in your opinion? He is falling back deeper - yet it doesn't provide the team with any specific advantages. Is he in a wrong position all the time?

  • @davidadetun8029

Enzo is actually quite good at receiving deep as well, hes a build up specialist too. The issue is thr movement after he recieves it.

Sterling is finished. I don't know why Potch keeps Mudryk on the bench as he's been far better than Sterling this season. When Mudryk and Nkunku both begin to start matches, that's when Chelsea will score goals (regularly). If Broja was fit he should have started upfront in this match.

All night we stifled any momentum we built up mainly because instead of playing balls in behind for the wingers to be on their toes after, the wingers kept coming back towards half way to receive and then dribbling into midfield. Mudryk is supposed to be lightening fast but he never kicked the ball past the full back to chase it and he was never looking to get on to any slide rule pass in behind. Why not? Even the classic ploy of getting in behind defenders when you can’t be offside to receive our throw ins in the boro half saw Sterling walking back towards our goal instead of showing any attacking intelligence and sprinting behind the full back to receive the throw. To me this is all schoolboy stuff and says the manager just doesn’t know how to best use these players going forward.

What happened to taking shots from outside the box. must you always try to dribble into the box. take long quality shots and who knows, you might get a deflected shot which could end up in the opposition net or even a hand ball which will result in a penalty. must they always try to dribble into the box. all you see in training is players taking shots at goal for fun until its matchday and they all begin to play like U18s

My favourite bit was the Alien dialogue😃. 1 defence i would make of Poch: is it Moises Caicedo is hiding from collecting the ball as he used to at Brighton? In the footage shown a lot of players just trotting and walking around and not really creating angles. Maybe its the zones Poch wants them in but maybe these players are scared and waiting for individuals to bail them out.

We take zero risks. Hence there is never any reward. The point regarding Caicedo is telling too. We have Thiago Silva, and Colwill who are exquisite passers who can always find him. Let's also not talk about how we are wasting Colwill at LB.....while we send our only available LB out on loan. In the attack, our wingers stay anchored, isolated, instead of providing interplay and 1-2's. How Poch continues promote this type of football is baffling.

I figure it also might be down to confidence. You're trying to look good in difficult circumstances leading you to choose safer options.
With less pressure and more confidence I'm sure Caicedo and Enzo would tear it up.
