  • Newcastle bounced back from a disappointing December to beat Aston Villa 1-3, becoming the first away team to win at Villa Park in almost a year. But was this a flash in the pan, or proof that Eddie Howe's men are back to their intense best. FourFourTwo's Adam Clery examines the game.

      Exactly ... when AV brought on Leon Bailey which meant DBD (Doh! BDB) was getting exposed (and which led to AV's goal and offside goal), EH swapped Miley for Tino and went to a nominal back 5 which effectively shut down AV. Previously there's a doubt that he would have made this tactical switch 🙂

    I was counting every longer pass Martinez did i the first half- I counted 7 out of 8 that either went straight out of play or were intercepted. In terms of shutting Villa down and preventing them from getting out we were superb. For minutes at a time they were trapped in their third.
    Howe also saved those three points by bringing on Tino to deal with Bailey. For 10 minutes, Villa looked on top as Bailey was running at and in behind Burn- bringing on Livramento dealt with that and gave Newcastle control back. Not making changes is my biggest criticism of Howe (Not that I have been anything but 100% in support of him) but he did it last night at a vital time.
    Another issue with the injuries has been that all they could do was recovery. They were literally not able to put in proper training sessions as they had to simply spend time getting physically prepared for the next game.

  • @Jettplayzgames
    @Jettplayzgames 6 месяцев назад +50

    In addition to the fatigue factor (yes indeed it matter people!), Howe deserves credit for the tactical change when he subbed Livramento in at 75 minutes for Miley, and switched to a back 5. It helped immensely in that NUFC were able to better deal with Bailey on the flank, who had an immediate impact when he came on. Point blank, if Howe doesn't make that switch in personnel/tactics and Villa possibly come away with a point.

      I think these are the things he'll pick up, as much as I love him, his game management regardless of fitness has been a bit poor at times, maybe naive even. He has improved this club so much though I don't like to ever criticise him but we need a few more ways of playing depending on the circumstances. I also think he deserves credit for not moaning, dwelling on the injuries, getting sassy with journalism - he just kept his head down and you could just tell things were going to be ok because of how calm he has been.

    • @55north17

      Toon played OK and, on balance, deserved the win. Danger for Toon fans is rose coloured glasses, If that marginally offside goal had been awarded to Villa then they had such a head-of-steam up they were going to overrun us. Trippier and Burn would have got destroyed by pace. Lots and lots of things are going right and we are justified in being confident but both the squad and Eddie Howe have still got it all to prove. Great base to build from but nothing more.

    • @dddgtsd
      @dddgtsd 6 месяцев назад

      true but with the competitiveness of the Prem these days, you can say that about most games - we've been doing a lot of things right in previous games and getting unlucky so it's nice to be on the right side of it - worth mentioning that was against a very strong Villa side away, I guess we'll see if we are really back in the winnable games with Luton/Forest etc@@55north17

    Brilliant the way you analyse and explain this. I hope Eddie and the coaches can devise a system (Plan B) for when we can't do this though. It seems to be all or nothing and depends upon availability and fitness. We need to learn to win (or at least not lose) games when we can't play this way.

      @unholyxeras8182 6 месяцев назад +1

      Im sure that will be a focus in training going forward, Eddie strikes me as the sort of man who learns lessons from failures and difficulties, there was no training time to get the players up to speed on another system of playing during that period but now that there is time to train im confident a back up plan will be worked on

    We were outstanding in that game and you’ve truly reminded me of that. Eddie Howe is a magnificent manager, the fact he got our team through this phase in a relatively respectable fashion and led us to Europe again barring shock FA Cup final heroics (where we CAN rotate, which we couldn’t in the UCL, let alone Group of Death, or PL) is nothing short of a miracle. We got through this spell with HALF A TEAM MISSING. The difficulty was not faced by any other team as much as this, and we pulled through. Eddie Howe, what a man.

      yeah I saw a pundit say 'thats why having a squad is important, he can't blame injuries' - I feel people don't realise the squad was injured, like our subs at one point were three GKs and three youth academy players and we were playing PSG! Also he has been limited on how much of a squad he can build due to FFP so he has had to make do with some players who people assumed were finished Dummett, Ritchie, Lascelles.

    The numbers are even more interesting if you consider the total value of players not available as a percentage of total value and also include Tonali's absence

    I wouldn't say 'fixed' more just business as usual. A large reason as to why we were all over the place this season, was more because the injuries threw our gameplans in the trash, and our solid base had been teared down as a result of that. But if you notice how players settle back, other plays get bit more rest, and form suddenly picks back up. It's why I've said time after time, that we'll have a very good second half of the season, as more will come back, and we'll be geared and ready for it.

    This season is a hard lesson for the club as a whole, whatever could go wrong with freak injuries and suspension (read: Tonali), it has happened. Its a lesson learnt the hard way, if you want to compete with the big boys every single season, make sure your squad depth and quality is robust for a 4 way competition We still have a long way before establishing ourselves as a top 6 club let alone winning a trophy. The consolation this season is the fact that we are still in the FA cup, hopefully with lesser games and more players returning, we might be able to get a good run in the cup and finish in the top 7.

I also think as the quality of the players improve, we'll move to a more possession based style of play and will be breaking down low blocks every week as opposed to running like mad pressing the whole game - it's often overlooked that this is basically the style of play Eddie thinks is best for the current squad, as the players change, Howe's tactics will too I imagine.

    We win one game in the league in ages and apparently this is the turn around? No wonder we get called deluded.

      It was clearly a different performance to the ones we've given recently. If you can't see that the fixture congestion and injuries were the problem, you don't understand football

    It's a great analysis but surely Eddie has a responsibility of having a plan B to cover extreme injuries and suspensions. Us changing system vs Villa made me almost fall of my chair, Eddie just sticks to the same system regardless 99 out of 100

      agree, the one criticism I had last season was that we only had a few routes to goal and if they weren't working we struggled - I think this season we've been quite one dimensional in terms of how we defend off the ball and when that's not working we've been getting rinsed on the counter. I think with time he'll learn to adapt with changing circumstances in games, it must be difficult though with all those injuries - I still think this can be another great season for him (last season hard to top though).

      It’s when he’s got the players to make plan B happen. If it was as easy as people say, he’d do it. Example - people been banging on about Hall but if he plays him too much, the buy obligation is triggered, he doesn’t want him and he needs to save that money for players he does want, and there seems to be a war inside the club between him and the players that Ashworth is wanting - Eddie has to stand his ground.
