  • It all comes down to this for England. After winning by the skin of their teeth against Slovakia, then winning on penalties against the Swiss and again at the death against the Netherlands - they now face an imperious looking Spain side before writing their names in the history books. If England get a few things right on the day... They just might do it.

    His choice of substitutions have not been clever and they have always been late. All he had to do was tune into ITV, they called his substitutions every single time just 10 - 20 minutes earlier than Southgate did it. In a way you could say his substitutions for Kane were poor as Kane shouldn't have started in the first place. There has possibly been a dozen or so times an England player is ready to cross it into the box and Kane is 30 yards away casually strolling about.

    • @toddschoonover5919
      @toddschoonover5919 Месяц назад +28

      Couldn't agree more. Everyone praising Southgate for the Ollie sub has lost the plot. If it should tell you anything, it's that Ollie should've been starting for Kane from the 2nd or 3rd game of the tournament. Southgate's subs are too late every game. He uses too few subs. Or else his subs are firesale plans where he makes a massive round of subs just throwing things out there hoping someone will do something great for him. Even his long term team selection across the tournament has been horrible. Does no one remember the trent/callagher/mainoo fiasco in midfield?

      @@toddschoonover5919 Or AT MINIMUM being sent on at half time. It beggars belief that Southgate is getting credit for this, by 60 mins against the Dutch I was screaming loudly for Watkins, Palmer, and Eze too - esp Ollie bc you could see balls going into the box and Kane being outside the 18 yard area.

    • @bobseddon879
      @bobseddon879 Месяц назад +10

      I think you'll find the record proves otherwise. Southgate likes to do late substitutions because it allows the sub to have more space and time against tired defenders, which increase their chances of a successful "moment". It also gives him the chance to frame the final moments of a game as he wants it....after the opposition have made their play.

Having Harry Kane as the only striker means we don't have a proper CF, because he always drops back like a False 9 waiting for someone else to run towards the box like Son did for him in Tottenham. • @paulmaple6887
    @paulmaple6887 Месяц назад +1

    I don't know what you're talking about? Holland were not playing deep, the second half saw them press and the game was played mostly in England's half. There was therefore space behind the Dutch defence which was why Ollie Watkins was a better pick than Ivan Toney as he holds the ball up well where as Ollie Watkins is very good at breaking through and getting around the back. Southgate has a plethora of superb players, his job is fairly straightforward. He just needs the balls and clarity of mind to make the right decision at the right time. I don't think he is very good at that. He was lucky, because thankfully they didn't score when they were in the ascendancy.
    What Southgate is good at is generating a positive team spirit, something I don't think England have had since Terry Venables. Part of that is a strong loyalty to players, but that may be our undoing. The way Kane is playing is perfect for the Spanish. They press high and he doesn't have the pace or inclination to exploit the resulting space behind their defence. The Spanish can therefore push up all the time! He also appears to lack physicality meaning he can't hold the ball up and help England move up the pitch and counter the Spanish press.
    Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966, made the tough decision of keeping Geoff Hurst as his number 9 meaning, the Great Jimmy Greaves was left out. The rest is history. It's a shame Southgate does not have what it takes to make such decisions.
    Let's hope it doesn't cost England, but I think it will.

Now people are going on as if no England player could get into the Spanish side in a combined 15.
    England have better individuals overall than this Spanish side and while Spain deserves to be favourites, sometimes individual talent can turn up on the day and outplay a team that has been playing better in the tournament.

    Having watched the game, England set up with Kane, Foden & Bellibgham all playibg No.10 and nobody as a 9 or 8 & it did not matter when Rodri went off at HT. These three closed their own attacking space. Unlike England; Spain knew their Managers System and Roles in that team, no matter who played. Kane was running about like a headless chicken, knackered by HT and Bellingham(our best player/ midfielder and goalscorer) on the left side was a shocking decision by Southgate, who was tactically outclassed by a fitter, positive, intensive team who played a high press and dominated the game(70% posession). Time for southgate to retire, and these players need a positive Pep, Klopp or Howe.. they deserve that tactical and football IQ to make England into Winners

    The issue with having several players flooding Rodris zone ist that spain does not build play with three in the back. If Foden, Saka, Jude and Kane start pressuring Rodri during buildup, Cucurella and Carvajal will be free to connect with the centre backs and Ruiz and Olmo and just evading the press on Rodri. That is what they did against Germany as well and Germany pressed way better than England.

  • @zelandakhniteblade5436
    @zelandakhniteblade5436 Месяц назад

    England can beat Spain by keeping the game tight for as long as possible until the key Spanish starters get tired, since the Spanish replacements are relatively weak. Because of this, a good option would be to play defensive counter football for the first hour, then transition into a more possession-based game later. Because of this, my S11 takes Trippier and Trent as WBs, with Watkins starting at CF. With the back 3 picking itself, that just leaves one OM spot - I have picked Saka here as I think he will be helpful for the counter-attacks and can easily drop back to WB later if we need a goal. A key part of this idea is the transition to a more aggressive approach, as I feel England will be favourites in Extra Time. Possible subs are Kane for Watkins; Shaw for Trippier; Foden for Trent; and Palmer for Jude or Mainoo. If behind after 85mins bringing Toney for Walker is the final all-in move. In summary:
    watkins
    jude-saka
    trippier-rice-mainoo-trent
    guehi-stones-walker
    subs: kane>watkins; shaw>trippier; foden>trent; palmer>jude/mainoo; behind after 85 toney>walker
    It's not sexy but I don't care how boringly England have to play if it wins the trophy.

  • @chrismcgregor272
    @chrismcgregor272 Месяц назад +3

    Rice/Bellingham/Saka/Kane are all going to have to speed up their passing and Mainoo is going to have to pass more than 10 yards.
    I don't see Rice/Bellingham/Kane/Saka suddenly playing at higher tempo and i don't see Mainoo' s passing range suddenly increasing.
    Lets hope England can keep the game close for 80 mins and then our higher quality options off the bench works one more time.

A couple of critical points though, meant in kind questioning: 1) the claim that Holland were dropping deeper toward the end of the game seems to conflict with Clery’s claim in the previous video about it that Watkins came on because Holland were pressing up more and leaving space in behind for Ollie to attack. 2) using the example of Chelsea v Man City as an example of how to stop Rodri doesn’t make the most sense given that City still scored four goals in that game, including a goal for Rodri.
