I knew a stunt man when I was a teenager and he told me he had many injuries from doing movie stunts and he is now retired and suffers chronic pain from years of doing stunts but says he loved his work.
I saw this movie when it was first released in the theater in 1966. I didn't know about the accident with the stuntman, but am glad he survived. It's one of my all time favorite movies and bat movies. I remember watching it again on TV in the 70's on my 13 inch color tv. Thanks again for the inside info.
“And Batman as Adam West” Rick! Love that! Trying to protect Batman’s true identity in your videos! 👍🏻🤣 I had heard of this accident before but never knew the stuntman’s name nor the details of what happened at the hospital. Ricknineg is THE channel for all the details! Thank you for that. Finally, yes in my option, stunt people are overworked and underpaid for all they contribute to a movie. Not even sure if they receive film credits or if anyone notices their credits if they are acknowledged. Hollywood needs to look out for all its people, (and animals) not just the stars. Great video! 😁
“And Batman as Adam West” LOL 😝 It is no wonder he was typecasted during his entire career. However, I read somewhere he did come to terms with it. After all what can you do about it. Sometimes it’s a blessing in disguise.
Thanks, Rick. I'm a bit older than you, but I love your channel mostly because I'm happy to see someone your age interested in the classic TV and movie nostalgia and information as I am. Thank you and keep up your great work.
One of the funniest things I remember about the Batman series to this day is when they used to label every piece of machinery that they used. As you can see in this episode, they had to put a label, designating the television as a closed circuit TV. I think there was one episode where it actually called something the bat something analyzer. Usually following in other episodes, that piece of machinery was never found or seen again. This was especially true of items in the Batcave.
This movie was a classic. Whenever it was on while I was growing up, I'd stop everything to watch it. My question is; what character was Ace dressed as? Was he doing Batman, Robin, bad guy or henchman?
My brother-in-law just put me onto your channel today. Had to subscribe. I've watched this movie several times. I loved it, of course, but I had never heard of this before this video. Crazy, but glad all turned out okay.
I know. I watched this movie, and remember watching Batman running through Gotham City trying to get rid of the bomb, although I can't understand why Batman didn't just throw the bomb off the bridge into the river below.
Never heard of this accident. Thank you for the story. Was a favourite movie of my. My nephew and I watched it as he was growing up. Still a good movie.
I was in summer camp down the street from the Fox tank up in Arrowhead CA. We watched them shoot all day until the stuntman fell into the wading pool. They shut down for the day and we hiked back to camp.
Another great segment Rick, thank you. I have seen the movie a few times and really liked it. Although Lee Meriwhether was a good Cat woman, she was not Julie Newmar the best Cat woman. I never heard of the injury that took place to Ace, and yes the industry should do a lot more to protect the stunt folks from possible injury or worse, they play a vital part to the shows and movies we see on both the small and big screens.
I remember watching this movie as a child. But I have not heard of this unfortunate accident. I specifically remember the scene when Batman was hanging from a rope ladder dangling from a helicopter in the middle of the ocean when a shark decided to bite him in the leg. I love this 60’s Batman not only because it brought back my childhood memories but also the campy portrayal of its characters. It’s funny, adventurous, not serious, and a lot of nostalgia. There are other serialized Batman before Adam West like 40’s or 50’s black & white version with this guy changing into his alter ego in the backseat of his Chevy. But the Adam West one is the most memorable one at least for me.
I absolutely loved Batman 😍 And I KNOW I saw that movie. Not for years though. I don't remember if I heard about this accident or not. That's terrible 😕 I believe that more precautions should be taken to protect stunt people and animals. Thanks Rick 😊
Seen this movie several times. Both as a kid and as an adult. That looks like the tank at Paramount Studios. It's used mostly as a parking lot. It's a shame we didn't see Lee Meriwether as the Catwoman. She really filled out her Catsuit.
I never even knew about this movie, until about 5 or 6 years ago. While doing some research on classic 20th Century Fox films, i discovered that there had been a Batman movie in 1966. Much to my surprise, lol, as my generation, we had long thought that the 1989 Micheal Keaton Batman movie was the first.
Marilyn Watson...the stunt double for Julie Newmar and who actually played the role on-screen during the Dr Cassandra episodes (and therefore in MY book as the FOURTH actress to play the character in the 60's) passed away a couple of years ago
Batman was my favorite show back Ihe Later 60s I watched and still do😅😮❤ batman always , at one time Robin /Burt Ward made an appearance at my Elementary school in Tucker ,Ga., I was in the 4th grade at that time , it was at Brockett school on Brockett Rd. .
I've been a Batman fan since the series first came out; I have picture of little me in a Batman shirt in 1966, when I was 4! I read Adam's book in which he talked about this, i think Burt did as well. Burt suffered a number of injuries over the years he was on the series, in fact in a Mr. Freeze episode, he has a bandage wound around his right forearm from an earlier incident. He does his best to hide it from the camera, but is unsuccessful. Because his costume wasn't as protecting as Adam's, he was injured the most.
I do remember this movie but I did not know of the accident with the stuntman. But what I do remember most is my disappointment that Julie Newmar was not Catwoman.
Julie Newmar was unavailable at the time and had to complete the current contract she had to fulfil. I forget whether she was starring in a movie or she was in a play at a stage theatre. I thought Lee Meriwether was equally as good as the brilliant Julie Newmar and I didn't know the difference back in my childhood. I have the 1966 movie and the complete collection of Batman on DVD. Far better than the indoctrinated Woke crap we see nowadays - Doctor Who should now be scrapped or renamed, Doctor Woke.
Thanks Rick. I have seen the movie, more than once. Being a big fan of the show, it was just natural. I was impressed with a “new” Catwoman! I had not heard of the accident however. Thank you for another informative video.
Now That’s Just Sad to Hear what happened to The Stunt Actor. I Absolutely Love This Film. You don’t need to take anything serious and just watch it and Have Fun.
I just watched the movie this past week for the umpteenth time 😅 I read somewhere that there was an accident, but I didn't know it was a on top of the Sub. I learn so much from you Rick on classic TV, thank you!!! 😊
I remember hearing about the accident and I’m glad he was alright in the end as that could have ended terribly. The film itself is great and a lot of fun, just like the Batman show. I’m glad you talked about the Adam West Batman film Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Please keep up the great work and have a great day and a great weekend. Take care!
Good one Rick. This is one of my favorite movies, seen it many times. I had no idea that this accident had happened. Tragic for sure at least he recovered, I don't think there is anything that can be done to prevent an accident from happening.
My partner's grandmother was a personal friend of Cesar Romero, a really lovely gentleman, she was also a personal friend of Dame Anna Neagle, lovely people like that you don't seem to get now, it's a changed world, 'Batman' is a cult tv show and rightly so, it is wonderful it is restored into HD, they don't make lovely programmes like that now.
Thanks, Rick. No I had not heard about the accident. That sounds horrible. They should take more precautions I think. Stuntmen and Stuntwomen are only human. I've seen this Batman movie a few times. Good messages in the movie too. My parents and I like one line that Adam West or Batman says in this movie, "Some days, you can't get rid of a bomb!" We all like that funny quote. It is a good and amazing movie for its time! Take care.
I was a preteen when the show and movie came out.. Absolutely loved both! I, as an adult, HAVE a DVD of The Batman Movie now! I also saw it in the Rialto Theater in South Pasadena, CA when it was released. Paid 25 cents to see the movie, and another 35 cents for popcorn and a coke!
Stunt people are well-trained professionals, and most actors deeply respect their stunt doubles. This included Adam West who had a high regard for his Batman stunt double, Hubie Kerns.
From What I remember, the movie came out in the middle of the series.the series had already been on for 1 or 2 seasons, then they showed the movie. They both started in 1966,
I'm so glad he turned out alright. I saw the film. Absolutely loved it. I would say yes they should take more precautions BUT sometimes acting turns out Dangerous the " precaution" for this is a stunt double they do however should use safety belts at all times to insure safety but back in the 60's the were no reports of deaths of stuntman on any movies.
I know about the accident during the climatic fight scene ontop of the submarine and he fell into the water after hitting his head. I listened on the commentary with both Adam and Burt.
I had heard that this was at one point supposed to be a Pilot for the series in Europe to introduce all the villains and Batman with Robin and yes I have a VHS COPY of this
I do recall Adam West & Burt Ward did mentioned about this incident many years ago. Fortunately, this guy did survive. Have to be very careful when doing any type of stunt. Have a nice day/night.
The Batman TV show didn''t run in Okinawa so I was eager to see the movie version. However, as delighted as I was to see the Batmobile and the Batboat, I was quite underwhelmed by the film itself.
I remember watching this movie back in the 70's I think. I have not seen it recently, but I remember bits and pieces of the movie. You could not pay me to be a stunt person. It's too dangerous. Why don't they now just use AI instead of people performing these deadly stunts?
I believe I've seen the movie. I don't remember the accident. I do think that more precautions are taken these days, however, we need to remember that no matter what precautions are taken, there will always be some element of risk andthere's no way to completely eliminate accidents.
This is my all time favorite movie and this was briefly mentioned on the standard edition DVD of the movie it’s mentioned as a crewman getting hurt while filming the finale big fight scene on top of the submarine so it’s known information but stuntman’s name wasn’t mentioned just that he got hurt and ultimately recovered cause I have seen the movie a lot over the years cause it was the only way I could watch Adam and Burt cause of the series not being officially released until 2014 and the movie was originally intended to be what led to the series but probably due to being pushed up to a mid season replacement during the 1965-1966 television season the movie was probably put on hold and got made in between seasons 1 & 2 and the movie was a lot of kids first time seeing the Batman and robin in color due to color televisions still being a luxury back then and families still using their black and white televisions unlike me in 1989 when I found the series at 5 years old cause color television was the standard by 1989
I first saw it in a theater when I was like 6 maybe,it was a special airing. I wasn't born yet when it was originally in theaters. I always thought that it was the pilot and then the show started. The stunt men were always my favorite part of Batman. They never even attempted to hide they were using stunt men. Like Burt Ward's stunt man had a big nose. Way bigger than Burt's. They did nothing to even attempt to try to cover it up. lol
John Wayne was a stunt man before hitting it big, and even then, still did many of his own stunts. He walked funny because his back had sustained so many blows (it wasn't an intentional swagger). Stunt work is dangerous, period. IIRC, every phase of a stunt is story boarded to eliminate as many risks as possible. I smirk when I see an old western and the actor is punched, landing on his back, but under him, you see a square, roughly seven feet by ten, jump as he lands (it's prepared pad). I'd rather see this than see a stunt actor, or actor, land on hard clay and then know that they are in real actual pain.
It's really a tragic shame how it didn't seem like stunt people in those days had much work hazard protection! This makes me think of how Yvonne deCarlo's husband Bob Morgan suffered a major injury and the cost of his care prompted her to work more!
Stunt people are hard core. But today, there is CGI, and there really is no need for stunt people, unless the director wants all "live" action on set. As you've seen in many of the superhero movies now, most of the violent scenes are CGI characters. I've seen this movie a few times, and I can say, the only problem I have with it, is CatWoman. No offense to Miss America, Lee Meriweather at all, but I don't think she fit the part.
@rick, you should do a video on the skier who lost his life during filming On Her Majesty's Secret Service, oddly enough, around the same time as filming this, give or take a year. I love the TV series - one of my favorites; this movie just doesn't do it for me. It's kind of a let down. I think they kind of hastened the end of the show a lot quicker by putting this out so quickly and it looks like it's a quick shoot.
I have seen several of the videos on this channel. I was not aware that so many accidents happened during the course of filming (or should I say "production"?)
Come to think of it, Rick. I think this movie came out after JFK assassination. Because my parents and I were trying to figure out who the President was suppose to be at the time. We thought Johnson. Or LBJ. I think my Mom recognized the dog near the President. Interesting fact. Just wanted to share.
As a young boy I was wild about Batman and Robin! Adam West and Burt Ward were great for children.
I knew a stunt man when I was a teenager and he told me he had many injuries from doing movie stunts and he is now retired and suffers chronic pain from years of doing stunts but says he loved his work.
Batman was great as Adam West.

On set accidents with stunt men is quite common, its sadly all part of their work. If a actor or star is injured it;s headline news for weeks.

Love that you’re a Batman fan too 👍🏽
Thanks Rick. This is a classic. Great villains. Some of the scenes have the look of being produced in the 60's. Classic Batman and Robin interactions.
I hadn't heard of this. My cousin and I gathered pop bottles and turned them in to earn enough money to see this film at a matinee showing.
Awesome video thanks for sharing Rick great stuff man
I always felt stunt people are never given the credit and respect that they deserve.
Great video keep up the excellent work

So much can be done with CGI now. Hopefully they don't need to endanger anyone's life to get fantastic movie stunts.

@@Zebra_3 Didn't know that. For me, Julie Newmar will always be Catwoman. What a beautiful woman, and that voice.....
Come to think of it, Rick. I think this movie came out after JFK assassination. Because my parents and I were trying to figure out who the President was suppose to be at the time. We thought Johnson. Or LBJ. I think my Mom recognized the dog near the President. Interesting fact. Just wanted to share.
Stuntmen and women are a tight knit group! They always look out for one another!
Did the stunt that hurt the stuntman make it into the finished film?
🤔
I heard about the accident to
Commodore Schmidlap
Imagine if current day Disney remade this movie… with all their woke subordinates.
