Avoid the Saqsaywaman Scam Peru 🇵🇪

  • ■ PERU, CUSCO: Cusco, as the gateway city to Machu Picchu for all foreign visitors to Peru, is a pretty well run place. The streets are safe and the many Inca historical sites littered both in and around the city are easily accessible as well as advertised pretty much on every street corner.
Which is why I was so surprised when I upon attempting to enter the city's most famous Inca ruins, Saqsaywaman, at the official gate, I was met by a man blocking the entrance who said that it was closed!
Thinking this simply couldn't be, I stood there for a while, knowing this has got to be a scam and waited to watch what would happen when other tourists came by.
Over the next 3 minutes I observed 10-15 other tourists being turned away. Scam confirmed! Some went back to the city. Some headed for another entry this man claimed was 20 minutes by foot further up the mountain. I felt sorry for the ones who simply turned back, deterred by the supposed longer treck, who might never get the privilege of seeing the Saqsaywaman ruins ever again.
So what on earth was going on here? What was this guys' con? And what do you do when this happens to you?

About the scammers, as a bilingual peruvian guy I can say that everybody cares about those scammers because the whole town live and work for and from tourism, what really happens is people DON'T really speak english, they can say phrases, words but they don't really understand 100% a conversation and sometimes they just smile back to you or try to change the subject like the lady at the ticket booth.
Best thing to do is find somebody fluent in english and report to the police, trust me, they do really care about that.
Again, I have been in the same situation while learning english and many times i missunderstood different situations. I hope everything is good , your videos are cool and you are very nice and generous with my people. I hope you come back soon to explore other parts of the country.

I hired a tour guide for Saqsaywaman, mostly out of pity and because he was so cheap. His knowledge about Saqsaywaman and the Inca was questionable to say the least, and many times I found what he was saying to be contradicted by what I had read in books. Anyway, after the tour I gave him a tip and in return he invited me for a drink. An hour later we were both getting drunk in a little taverna only a few metres away. He was a divorcee with several kids, functioning alcoholic, and kept wanting to use my phone to email some girl in Japan (and expecting a reply, despite the obvious time zone differences). Good times, I sometimes wonder what's happening with him since the global lockdown

You can look at the megalithic stone compared to the stonework of the buildings at machu picchu for example, where they use much smaller stones for the buildings. This suggests that these sites were resettled upon. And that whomever lived here before had died, losing the knowledge of constructing the megalithic stonework.
I think we need to give ancient people more credit, as we have a huge gap in our knowlegde of our species.

The Spanish Tercio was an infantry formation that included arquebusiers and pikemen and numbered around 3000. These formation was adopted by most European armies and put Spain as a superpower. I’m not entirely sure of the name of the cavalry that Harald speaks of, but they are most likely Coraceros, or Cuirrasiers in french. These used a cuirass (a solid chestplate) that was only vulnerable to being deformed by blunt weapons, and yes, it even stopped early firearms.
During the late 15th century, full plate armor was mainstream and knights were covered from head to toe in steel. I’m not sure if most of the conquistadores wore full plate armor, but the leaders and cavalry most certainly did.

    • @HaraldBaldr
      @HaraldBaldr  4 года назад +8

One of the books I read referred to the cavalry of the Conquistadors as being the same Tercios who had fought in the battle of Pavia against King Francis I (and won). Maybe he meant as part of said formation as you called it but the way I read it it seemed he used said term for the cavalry. I'll go read it again. Thanks for sharing you insight 😉

I've watched a lot of your videos and not that it's evidence or fact, but I can count dozens of people who say "Yes" to that question who cannot understand or hold conversations.
But yeah, burn her! She's evil and definitely in on the mighty scam! That's the only reason plausible! The Guide who seemed friendly enough must have been in on it too following that logic.

It's honestly VERY hard to believe that the Incas built Sacsayhuamán. The architecture is completely different from the traditional Inca one, with the exception for the top layers of stones, which are definitely added later. You can't find the massive rocks that are connected like a puzzle in any other Inca structure. I can see why Harald seems to be a bit skeptical of the guide insisting that Sacsayhuamán was built by the Incas.
Also, by no means I am implying it was built by giants or aliens haha - There are plenty of other pre-Inca Andean civilizations who built fascinating structures, like Tiwanaku and Puma Punku by Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, for instance.

Damn the scenery of the sky reminds me of where I lived in Mexico, we also had like those festival things outside of churches, we had these people wear fireworks costumes in the shapes of bulls and light them up and dance around and a lot of fireworks too! It was great! And rain dances all types of culture, but I hear it's dying off since a lot of people are becoming Americanized like a lot of parts of the world....kinda sad but it's cool seeing similar culture !

Harald, You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! And I am proud of you for pressing him a couple times, they will not budge though!! A real shame for HISTORICAL truth over cultural pride. . Egypt is exactly the same way. Although, if they looked into their own history as many have, they would understand the INCA found those Megalithic ruins of Sacsaywaman, Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, pizac, and many more around cusco and beyond. They built atop of these ruins in their own familiar style (Not megalithic multi-ton stone work) the guide you got not only follows the standard model but that is their job, it is unfortunate.Although, there are some out there who teach the real story. There are THREE stages of construction in those sites NOT JUST 2, and the last and third one I mention IS THE INCA construction. The other 2 are UNKNOWN and MUCH MUCH older.. They completely resemble other seriously ancient sites all over the world. I know this is an old video but this site is one of my favorite places.
