Tywin was already hand of the king. Tyrion was acting HOK in Tywin's place while he was waging war against the Starks.
The reason Jon had to kill halfhand was because he told him to they explain it better in the books but the short and simple is halfhand told Jon to spy on wildlings and figure out what they are doing
Plus, if one of them was going to survive the wildling camp, it would be Jon. Ygritte even said that they would cut his head off and/or torture the Halfhand if they ever captured him. There's no way he wanted to go out like that.

Everyone saw their bad choices. They weren't subtle but rather quite obvious for all to see. Why does Robb never get the benefit of being a teenager doing teenage things.
@Skrzacik He died because of his choices. We get it, but he didn't deserve any bit of that. A young teenager was dumb like most teenagers that doesn't mean he should be murdered or see his wife murdered brutally.

Sansa was doing backflips in her mind. In the books Cersi tells her what is going to happen. She (Cersei) warned her not to look happy in front of the court when it was announced. She thought it would be an insult to Joffery and House Lannister.

Qoren half hand told Jon he needed to do what must be done = kill him so he can be trusted by Mance and the Wildlings.
He knew he would be killed when they get him back to Mance Raider. Egrit said they would kill him slow and make it last days. So, a quick death by Jon is merciful, and hopefully, Jon can get good info for the watch.

Halfhand told Jon to kill him.. I am paraphrasing but when they met as wildling prisoners he told Jon that a man ‘inside’ is worth more men than the nights watch even have.. Jon said they would never trust him.. he said they would if Jon did what needed to be done.. Ion was upset that the rest of the men were killed because he messed up w beheading Ygritte & they went looking for him.. Halfhald told Jon ‘they found us before we found you’ Getting in w the wildlings makes their deaths not in vain..
