I worked for the railroad for 40 years, 35 of those in engine service. I have had multiple fatalities and more close calls. From a distance the engineer has no way of knowing whether a person standing between the rails is suicidal or just stupid. I would have called it in especially since it's not the first time the guy in the orange t shirt has done that.
I'm 70, when I was 6 to 15 my family took the Golden State train from L.A. CA to Amarillo TX twice every year. The railroad employees were the nicest people. One lasting memory was the conductor spreading California Poppy seeds up the Grape Vine Hill. In the spring both sides of the track were covered with orange flowers. Great folks, lasting memories.
“I don’t care if they buff, I don’t care if they take pictures. Don’t stand in the middle of the tracks” I’ve been foaming by that mantra all my life. Hell, in some instances, it’s been rewarding (got a hat from a CN crew, a couple safety vests and a cab tour back in the day)
Excellent video Alex! Thanks so much! That engineer was actually quite nice about the whole thing! Standing right in the middle of the track is a dipsh*t move, especially with an orange shirt on. And the engineer said, he does it all the time, I'm gonna have to call it in! Lucky blessing that you got that 50th Anni. Pin! Seriously, the crew of that train were awesome!
That's probably one of the overall best looking Amtrak trains I have seen a video of recently. The locomotives both look in good shape, very sharp paint job on the lead locomotive. The cars all look clean and in good shape. Over the last few years especially from both my experience viewing videos and in person sightings, alot of Amtrak equipment is covered with grime and the locomotives look beat to hell and in need of new paint. The nice thing about the stainless steel, a 40+ year old Amfleet car looks a fraction of its age when its nice and clean! Top notch video, seems like a friendly crew, despite the engineer being pretty irritated by the fellow in the orange shirt. Completely understandable though! Thank you for posting!
I'm impressed with the comments here, by you guys who are obviously rail fans. I'm impressed that you DON'T support doing something unsafe and illegal. There are a lot of people/hobbies where that's overwhelmingly not the case. Thank you, from a non rail fan retired paramedic, for being a conscientious rail fan.
I love the phrase "don't do stupid things when you're doing stupid things". Sure, trespass on railroad property, go down in the steam tunnels at your uni, etc, but also, while you are doing the unsafe/illegal thing, make sure to be careful about hazards which make it exponentially more dangerous. Watch out for open pits, confined spaces, don't stand on the tracks looking through a viewfinder. Keep your wits about you, and make the unsafe/illegal thing as safe as possible.
"Not the money shot." *It would be for the foamer's family when they try to sue the crew for "being negligent" after he's struck.* At least until the footage gets shown in court. Ah yes, the smart thing to do when a train is approaching head on is to stand dead center
I’ve stopped my train before if ahead of schedule to just say a few words. If they would have seen or been through half of what I have, they would never stand between the rails. Much respect for this crew. Remember we’re by ourself in the cab. We rely on good people to keep everyone safe !!
It comes down to people need to respect the fact that those locomotives are 200 tons they don’t just stop like the old saying goes play stupid games when stupid prizes that kid could’ve easily tripped, injured himself and got himself run over by an Amtrak train. There should be heavier penalties for trespassing, especially on railroad property since it’s a very dangerous area to be.
@@Drakeman2003the only issue is that it takes people out with you. The engine man has gotta see and hear that day every time he goes to sleep. That time when they killed or maimed someone. Great hornwork by the engineer; as a former RR employee, I appreciate the way they handled this. One second of carelessness can cause a lifetime of sorrow.
THe train should keep going. Your are not suppoiosed to stand there, it is private property. If you stay there the train will run over you, period. It is not the engineer nor the train fault, just a Darwin Award.

I was a Special Agent with ICG RR in E. St. Louis, Ill! Got dispatched to a town just north where a 16 yo girl driving a Plymouth Fury ran around the crossing gate! The Amtrak Turbo Liner broadsided her. The front half of the Plymouth was located a half a mile toward St. Louis. The rear half was just the other side of the crossing. Sadly her brother and her never made it to school!
I went with my friend to watch a train pass. We stood back from the track about 100 feet. I figured that if something broke or an object on a rail got hit and propelled my way I might have enough time to duck behind a tree. My friend is a real rail fan. He had a small riding railroad that circled down a hill, over a trestle, past his dad's house (it was his dad's project) and crossed a driveway, with a wig-wag, up the hill and back to the train barn. It was a sweet arrangement.
Thank you for being a safe, and respectful railfan. This video is two perfect images of what to do, and what not to do… your respect was even rewarded. Great video!
I once had a guy in Parsons Yard Columbus OH lay down between the rails to take a pic of a train coming down the switching lead. Needless to say I had him thrown out.
A year or two back I read a news article about a photographer who stood on the tracks to get a shot of a steam train. It didn't end well for the photographer.
The reality is many use oncoming trains to commit suicide - and that is a difficult thing for engineers to live with. The camera man probably had no idea of that.
What a selfish and dangerous thing to do. That guy in the orange shirt is a goon. Imagine putting yourself in danger unnecessarily. My friend’s older sister was a cop in Northern California, she had to patrol the railroad tracks and would find the remains of suicide victims that came from the local colleges, they cracked under the pressure. Very sad. Glad you got a pin, that Amtrak conductor was very nice.
Dude, as an OLAV that was awesome of the crew! When I first saw him in the gauge I was nearly yelling at the video (of course, I didn't because I'm at work) lol.
When I was a second trick maintainer in Philadelphia during the afternoon rush, we normally found kids walking in the gauge to get from one place to another on their way home from school... and I had to explain to them what would happen if they didn't hear the electric powered commuter train coming up behind them. Fortunately, I never found pieces of kids along that stretch of track.
Train engineer here, idiots standing between the rails piss off engineers and conductors. We have no clue whether you’re going to get out of the way in time because you’re taking a picture or if you are some crazy nut attempting a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Remember that when filming or taking photos that you are watching someone do there JOB. It can be incredibly frustrating to be filmed or watched while doing a job so cut them some slack. They are making a living and one incident can cause them their job because you wanted a photo.

That foamer was lucky enough that he didn’t get hit by the train since the engineer can see him on the level crossing. Had he stood on the tracks further away from the crossing or dealt with a hasty engineer, the engineer would not give a shit and will hit him hard to the ground. But as always there are still engineers with a kind heart. The engineer in the video is one of them.
As freight Engineer I hit three one lived my Conductor has the gruesome job to render assistance it wasn't pretty and the one I hit I can still see him I will never forget that was at 40 mph Amtrak at 90 mph wow!
Try that a few years back around East London UK where I did my driver training. The Engineer running at that speed would have been out and battered the crap out of him. Makes my blood boil.
I'm 99% sure that the railroad can charge people with trespass for standing on the right of way. The railroad police need to meet some of these trains especially at crossings with a lot of railfans. Given the choice of hitting somebody too stupid to stay off the tracks or throwing the train into emergency with a load of passengers, the passengers win every time. No brake application until AFTER the suicide takes place and then only because the leo's will want a report.
Why did the Silver Star 91 pull nearly through the crossing, and then back down in the reverse direction? Conductor stated "Good for nine cars." There were 9 cars in that train, including the 2 engines.
That engineer is too nice and too patient. I've seen an engineer drag a kid off the track before. Definitely is an embarrassment for all Foamers (non derogatory context). JFK loved Foamers, and so do I. Those that remember them days will tell you, being called a foamer was a name of honor. It was the "respected king" feeling. I wish they would of called it in honestly. Wouldn't mind seeing the police trespass him.
This is really simple, coming from someone from the other side of the pond where trains move a darned-sight faster than here, IMHO. Stay the heck off the tracks. That buffoon is the kind of person who spoils things for everyone else. Who thinks standing in the center of the tracks, in full view of the Engineer, is a good idea? Does the Engineer hit the brakes when he sees you or does he/she assume you'll move?
This is an interesting experience which I have not seen nor heard(since I haven’t Railfaned so much, and since I am also 14), but that is dumb thing to do. It’s literally common sense. Anyways that was pretty nice of the conductor giving a pin! Hope at least that happens to me once! Nice catch of the Pepsi special livery!
I get such a rush when a train goes by that I never get from cars. Trains built this country way more than automobiles have. No matter how big and cool you think your truck is, it does nothing for me.
Wrong. If you average out this country's history (and do your research), trains have contributed far more to industry, transportation, and the economy than cars and since have since 1950. Furthermore, you could also argue that automobiles and mainly America's dependence on them is actually ruining this country.
Great Video…. Lucky moment for you. Kudos to the Amtrak team… The consist would have been cool if the the Amfleet matched the Viewliners. And if 145 compained it would have been an awesome Phase 3 extravaganza in the 21st century.

I know the engineer, good guy, and 100% correct
He needs to do his job and shut his mouth
So do I. Idk about great guy 😂 but he's got every right to be grumpy as he usually is
I'm 70, when I was 6 to 15 my family took the Golden State train from L.A.
Don’t stand in the middle of the tracks”
I’ve been foaming by that mantra all my life.
Pin! Seriously, the crew of that train were awesome!
thanks
Thank you for your service.
Good on the crew to call them out, and very kind of the conductor to give you a pin.
"Not the money shot."
*It would be for the foamer's family when they try to sue the crew for "being negligent" after he's struck.* At least until the footage gets shown in court.
Ah yes, the smart thing to do when a train is approaching head on is to stand dead center
Footage from another video of mine is being used in a case right now.
😂😂😂
I could have been a very lousy 50th anniversary if a tragic incident had occurred here...
How cool, what a professional and thoughtful person she is.
This is a really great video, hats off to the amazing crew of that train. Saw them in Lake Mary earlier that day.
Thank you.
I’ve stopped my train before if ahead of schedule to just say a few words. If they would have seen or been through half of what I have, they would never stand between the rails. Much respect for this crew. Remember we’re by ourself in the cab. We rely on good people to keep everyone safe !!
That crew was excellent and that conductor was lovely to give you that pin Keep up the good reputation for us enthusiasts
Sean is truly a good guy if I was him I wouldn’t have warned that guy I would just call him in
That's true
It comes down to people need to respect the fact that those locomotives are 200 tons they don’t just stop like the old saying goes play stupid games when stupid prizes that kid could’ve easily tripped, injured himself and got himself run over by an Amtrak train. There should be heavier penalties for trespassing, especially on railroad property since it’s a very dangerous area to be.
@@jeremyolson3837 or you play with fire you get burned

@@Drakeman2003the only issue is that it takes people out with you. The engine man has gotta see and hear that day every time he goes to sleep. That time when they killed or maimed someone. That time they had to stick around as they carted the guy off because he had to do paperwork.
It's not a victimless crime.
Great hornwork by the engineer; as a former RR employee, I appreciate the way they handled this. One second of carelessness can cause a lifetime of sorrow.
Possibly a very short lifetime of sorrow.
That was sure nice of the conductor or brakeman. The guy in the orange shirt was really stressing out the engineer. The engineer doesn’t need that.
THe train should keep going. Your are not suppoiosed to stand there, it is private property. If you stay there the train will run over you, period. It is not the engineer nor the train fault, just a Darwin Award.
That engr', like myself, has probably hit numerous cars, killed a couple pedestrians, injured people and is sick of sitting on the edge of his seat wondering if the dolt is going to move or is this one a suicide.
Poor choices
What a great conductor. That made your video really special
Pretty sure he got the message....Completely understand how he made the crew nervous! You don't want to see anything on the tracks ahead of you!
Unfortunately I doubt it. Had the police been around to pick him up he would have been furious, not to mention his mother(?) in the car.
@@57thorns Poor mummy, been puttin' up with that Ironhead for a long time. ¿Cabeza de fiero? 🤔😖
I like to railfan but not on the tracks, that's nuts
Good that they called out the rude railfan, but then rewarded the respectful one. Very cool crew, and nice job filming.
That’s why the railroad police will sometimes come and tell them to leave or just stay away from the tracks
Or just hand them a ticket for trespassing.
Saddening, I used to know this kid. I’m never speaking to him again after that.
who is he?
Chase said it was me
Someone named Chris
That seems like a bit much, but I definitely wouldn’t go film trains with him
@@somethingsomething404 Agreed. Lol, completely shunning the kid is kind of cringy lol
One of my favorite railroad interactions so far :)
4:08 super classy! The engineer was spot on too. Take photos/video, but don't be an idiot.
I love the natural echoes making the horn sound even bigger than usual!
The reality is many use oncoming trains to commit suicide - and that is a difficult thing for engineers to live with. The camera man probably had no idea of that.
I know about the activity itself. This other guy was basically trying to take photos.
Just realized how good of a collectable item that pin will be in a few years
What a selfish and dangerous thing to do.
You do NOT know the stress you cause a train crew doing that. Aha... It wasn't you!
Dude, as an OLAV that was awesome of the crew! When I first saw him in the gauge I was nearly yelling at the video (of course, I didn't because I'm at work) lol.
As a conductor with a class one, and a former carmen on a class three, please, for the love of god, stay off the damn tracks people
Ironically, that pin shows the same angle of the train as that that guy wanted to get on his camera.
Great observation
If I had 29 or 30 years in and he pulled that on me I think I might beat his ass. Friend of mine ran Ashland ky to Cincinnati for years and he accidentally killed someone , that is something that you go to sleep every night thinking about
Exactly
I really love this! It shows how doing things right and not breaking the rules actually gets people somewhere! My heart is full after your reward for being a stand up human! My son watches these types of train videos all the time so I want him watching great influences like y'all instead of those crazy rascals!
Dude! That was awesome! Good crew member, rewarding someone for doing it right.
check out the phase 3 paint scheme on all the viewliners ,I wonder if they'll paint all of the cars in that scheme?
dude looks like he's 30 and mom still drives him around
I think he is.
Wow, does that guy/kid know that you can get great shots NOT standing on the tracks? Ever heard of a telephoto lens!? The pin is super cool-I need one for my camera bag. Thanks for a great video-I’m subscribing!
Thanks for the info!
Foamer gets called out by the crew then immediately leaves.😂 Also, very cool that the conductor gave you a 50th Anniversary pin.
Me and my friend used to go railfanning all over the place me and him loved watching them come out of Allentown yard and always drove down by the Allentown yard to see what was going on and to see how full the yard was they had a hump in there too so we would watch the cars being humped it was cool to watch we also went to Lancaster to watch the steam trains and even rode on it and we went to Altoona to see horshoe curve and spent the weekend in Altoona going to the railroad museum and even was there during railfest I still remember all them years watching Conrail then when Conrail got bought out by csx and Norfolk southern we held up a big sign on horshoe curve in Altoona saying by big blue we will miss you with a face crying 😭 we got so many engineers blowing there horns and waving it was a sad day in 2002 my friend Bob passed away but the memories of us railfanning together will be something I will always cherish .

Any idea on what the function of the move the train undertook, pulling up and then backing?
@Leuven is a place Tampa uses a station that is a dead end terminal.
One time at the train station in Dallas I was so focused on finding a working ticket kiosk that I crossed the tracks while the train was approaching. I was mortified when they honked at me. Can’t imagine having the gall to do this
Yeah DART is infamous for have 4 kiosk per station but the only one that works is always on the other side.
@@icanhazgoodgame3845 nowadays is even worse, with some intentionally not taking cash or not taking card. I had to go 4 stops before finding one that would accept a credit card.
I'm sorry fare inspector, I want to pay for my fare, but you literally don't let me.
He didn’t call anyone in, he said “If you stand in the middle of the tracks again, I’m calling you in”, the communication with the others about the moron in orange is amongst the crews
Darn she gave you a pin?! Lucky you!
This guy is not the only one who has a amtrak railroad pin

The crossing lights keep turning off!!!
Rolling shutter effect caused by bright daylight causing the camera to crank its exposure time WAY down.
People like the guy standing on the tracks give everyone a bad name. It's never worth your life for a good shot.
Well done. Stay off the tracks and get a cool pin too. Good behavior gets rewarded.
And that, right there, is the type of railfan that makes the rest of us look bad. Way I see it, being a railfan, being trackside, comes with the responsibility to do so safely, to set the example, not to try to be the exception.
A close runner-up is people who put coins on the track
That foamer was lucky enough that he didn’t get hit by the train since the engineer can see him on the level crossing. Had he stood on the tracks further away from the crossing or dealt with a hasty engineer, the engineer would not give a shit and will hit him hard to the ground. But as always there are still engineers with a kind heart. The engineer in the video is one of them.
As freight Engineer I hit three one lived my Conductor has the gruesome job to render assistance it wasn't pretty and the one I hit I can still see him I will never forget that was at 40 mph Amtrak at 90 mph wow!
The trolley at the end of this video was a nice touch.
He got called out by the crew when you got a pin from them for doing the right thing so I bet he’s very jealous now.
He.got off the track before the arm was down. What is.the problem with that?
He was truck pressing
Why did the Silver Star 91 pull nearly through the crossing, and then back down in the reverse direction?
Conductor stated "Good for nine cars." There were 9 cars in that train, including the 2 engines.
Rule #1: Stay off railroad tracks.
Rule #2: See rule #1.
"you know what sounds like a good idea? Standing in front of a couple hundred tons of moving steel"
THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO OF WHAT NOT TO DO AND HOW TO CREATE A POSITIVE OUT OF A NEGATIVE. 😊
Wow that's very dangerous what he did was extremely dangerous there's absolutely nothing wrong with filming train videos just be safe about doing so
Never stand between the rails like the guy in orange. It means you have to cross at least one rail to get out of the way of the train.
That was very risky. My scared weak-ass would never have the balls to do what that foamer did. But that Dash 8 pin was absolutely cool not gonna lie
I get such a rush when a train goes by that I never get from cars. Trains built this country way more than automobiles have. No matter how big and cool you think your truck is, it does nothing for me.
Your comment might be accurate, circa 1950.
Wrong. If you average out this country's history (and do your research), trains have contributed far more to industry, transportation, and the economy than cars and since have since 1950. Furthermore, you could also argue that automobiles and mainly America's dependence on them is actually ruining this country.
@@geisaune793 Wrong--not since 1950 they haven't. Reply or not, I'm not about to get into a "my train is better than your car" argument.
i bet those passengers were like "What are they doing why we going backwards all of a sudden?"
Great Video…. Lucky moment for you. Kudos to the Amtrak team…
The consist would have been cool if the the Amfleet matched the Viewliners. And if 145 compained it would have been an awesome Phase 3 extravaganza in the 21st century.
Standing in the tracks while a train is approaching is not being a 'railfan.' It is being a _______. And people like that person give the rest of us a bad reputation, as well as cause the rest of us to be hassled by law enforcement. What a jerk.
Amtrak Trains are VERY territorial and protective of their tracks! One must never disturbed a passing train!
Haha. “Their tracks” if only they owned them…
By the fact that the enginner or conductor (i honestly have no clue as i don't have a radio scanner currently) said they do it all the time, that person had been doing it for a while
Love the pin. Right place right time. Nice congrats
Thanks 👍
