It didn't sound like it was an emergency stop. It was already slowing down for some other reason, then the engineer made a deeper air set. We will never know why. The "popping" sound was knuckles adjusting under the changing slack load. An emergency application of brakes is a very distinctive sound accompanied by a loud burst of air being vented from the relief valve on each car. Unless I just couldn't hear it in this video...
@@dustin4 Man the stories the old heads would tell..........Only sober guy was running the train, that guy had worked the RR for 2 weeks. Not even a qualified brakeman yet.........and they let him run. WTF🤣
That loud pop is the air line being dumped for emergency brake application. You're hearing it just evacuate all the air in the lines to full apply the brakes.
If it were emergency, the emergency brakes would be applied which would create a VERY loud squealing sound, which takes around 20 seconds to stop. This was just the regular stop or dyanmic braking a freight train would do which takes around a minute at a normal speed. The "popping" sound is actually just the knuckles crashing into each other due to the dyanmic brakes applied. If something actually happened to the train it was probably just a airhose issue or stuff.

That wasn't an Emergency stop. it was a simple stop for a signal or a crew change. he made a minimum service application "Air Brakes" followed by dynamic braking, hence the run in sound you hear as the train is bunching up. had it been an emergency brake application, you would hear the control valves on each car dumping all of the air followed by screeching wheels and an abrupt stop

Wasn't an emergency stop the air wasn't released that was a normal stop using the breaks probably for a signal or something. If it were emergency there'd be a loud rush of air being released and then deafening squealing and it'll take like 20-30 seconds to stop.
