This video was super informative, thank you! I'm a non-trad strongly considering DPMS after trying a DIY postbacc at community colleges/state schools. It's definitely an option but it's way harder than I anticipated while working. 2 things for anyone else figuring this out: 1) If you try to just take classes as a non-degree seeking student, some schools will charge you more. A workaround is to apply to matriculate into the school for a second bachelors or a masters program, take whatever classes you need and then you can withdraw from the program. That also gives you access to financial aid, which you don't generally have if not degree-seeking. 2) If you already have a science degree, the upper level classes that would look more impressive for a DIY postbacc usually have prereqs sort of specific to that school. Make a really solid plan way ahead of time so that you know how many classes you plan on taking and how much it will cost.
Love this. I’m so happy for you and glad you saw this through! I wish you all the best on your journey! I’m applying to the program for this cycle in the 2021 - 2022 cycle, hoping for the best :)
This was so inspiring to watch. I’m the process of studying for Mcats. I applied to one of the Drexel programs last year but unfortunately I didn’t get in. Thank you so much for sharing this! I just subscribed praying for your success!!💜
Hi! I'm looking to apply for the DPMS program this upcoming year. I was wondering if you had any insight on the application process, in which what traits would make you a strong candidate? I have read the review on SDN and the website itself; however, I would love to hear your take. Also, I'm also went to NC school for undergrad! So, I love that connection there.
Thanks so much for your comments! Hmm its been a while since I applied but from what I remember it was a straightforward application process, the essay is always challenging but I would say have several people proofread your essay and offer suggestions for improvement. Other then that for the interview (I believe there was an interview) be honest and be yourself, be comfortable with discussing any challenges you may have faced in your journey and how the program can help you be successful at reaching your goals. For cost, the program was about 60k for the year and traditionally these post bac programs are fairly expensive. I took out loans to cover the cost of my program year. But perhaps now they may offer scholarships or other ways to subsidize the cost. If cost is a concern and your primary reason for the program is academic enhancement, I would also consider taking advanced science courses via a community college or enroll as a non degree seeking student at a university and take a few courses to boost your GPA. This is what I did after DPMS, and this way your out of pocket cost is considerably cheaper plus allows more flexibility to work and do other things too. I hope this is helpful. Feel free to email me if you have additional questions at alsoarc@gmail.com
Hi! Thanks so much for the video. I would also love to reach out and discuss the program with you. I'm a nontrad premed here in Philly and super interested in the program!!
I LOVE THIS !!! This was so informative and I am really interested in applying to this program. Quick question: What masters degree do you receive from the program ? I'm assuming it's a Masters in Science (MS), but wanted to ask
Hey Jessica! So glad you found the video helpful! You’re right it’s a 1 year Master of Science. You should apply! hot tip: if/when you apply ask a lot of questions and keep doing your research. Keep an open mind & weigh all your options!
Thank you for sharing your experience! I’ve been trying to find more videos about SMPs, and in my research, Drexel’s program seemed the most appealing to me. It’s also nice to see a fellow North Carolina resident who got in 😁 that said, I have one question that I can’t seem to find the answer to: I understand that there is med school equivalent coursework in these programs, but if you get accepted to Drexel’s med school, would those courses transfer over, or do you need to retake them? I know for some programs like Tufts’ SMP, you need to retake them, and that’s a big deciding factor for whether or not I want to apply.
Hey! I am glad you found my channel! And yes during DPMS even though they were the same courses you would have to retake them as a first year medical student. Not sure if that has changed since I did the program thou. I would suggesting emailing the program contact info on the program site and ask them to be certain!
Hi! I was wondering how you formatted your disadvantage essay for the DPMS program? I would really love some advice because I am interested in applying. Thanks!
Hi ! My advice would be to be honest and share some of the challenges you have faced in your journey and tie those into how the program can help you become a stronger med school application/ future medical student. Also sure any life experiences or cultural experiences that might make your journey challenging, for me it was being a first generation college student and how I lacked solid mentorship early on in my education. Things like that!
Thank you so much for sharing this and I'm glad I found this helpful info! For students who do not get qualified for Early Decision Acceptance, do you lose out on applying to other schools for that application cycle/year after you complete the program?
Thank you for this video I have submitted my application and waiting to hear back. How long did it take to hear back after you submitted your application ?
I don’t quite remember exactly but I believe it was 4-5 months after application deadline. I think I had at least 1-2 months between the time I was accepted and start of program
Hey Michelle! I took my MCAT I believe 2 months before applying for the program. It was a requirement to apply but if you needed to improve your score that’s ok too because the program gives you an opportunity to take a prep course and retake the exam.
Great video! Can i ask how the mcat worked in the DPMS? Do they give you like 3 weeks or something while taking the classes? Or do you finish all the classes then take the mcat after all that? How much time do they give you to study?
Thank you! At the time I did the program we were taking MCAT prep courses each week along with our DPMS curriculum. There were set times when we had to take practice exams. So MCAT studying was mixed in with class studying. Everyone had a different study plan but for me I took winter break which was about 4 weeks and studied from 6am-6pm every day, with one day off a week. Then I took the MCAT in January.
@@TheAlsoArchives Nice! Also, would it be easier or harder to maintain a 3.2 gpa if someone needs to take the mcat? By taking the mcat, there’s less classes to worry about right? Otherwise if the mcat had met the requirements, you’d need to take more upper level classes right ?
Hey! I wish you all the best with the MCAT. Sure I would love to talk to you and answer any questions you might have about the DPMS program. You can send me an email at shanjalso@yahoo.com!
@@TheAlsoArchives I appreciate you responding, mean a lot. I did a little research and this program is strictly on-site, which I can agree on. I opted to enroll in the Post Bacc-Medical Flex 1 yr program, works better for me. There are so many alternatives out there so the choices are a range of possibilities. Takes a little time, but I will get their. Thank you for sharing your story!
My GPA was a 2.8 science & 3.3 overall. The classes were challenging for me because of the amount and depth of the material. I think the stronger foundational since knowledge you have the “easier” DPMS will be. Plus since the program is only a year long there isn’t any room for error/distractions it’s a hit the ground running kinda program lol
Hey! I got a 495 the first time I took the MCAT and the second time around I earned a 506. If you check out the first episode of the double shot a medical school admission series that will give you more details about my MCAT and GPA! And thank you so much! ruclips.net/video/PkbomVI475o/видео.html
