This performance took place in Newark, New Jersey, at Symphony Hall on November 4, 1978, under the baton of Alfredo Silipigni. Carmen.....................Victoria de los Angeles Don José.................James King Micaela....................Joanna Bruno Escamillo.................Gustavo Escudero
I honestly think that she is my favourite singer ever. Victoria de los Angeles - everything is pure song and expression. Always beautiful. This was towards the end of her operatic career, but she sang well for many years after this in concert , choosing her repertoire wisely and delighting her audiences. I am so glad that some film still exists of her singing Carmen and thank you for sharing this. I guess if opera houses didn't cast her in this role much it might have been because she was associated with heroines like Mimi , Marguerite and Butterfly, rather than the wicked temperament of Carmen ? The fact is she played it so well when she got the chance.
I remember reading her autobiography and her saying how frustrating it was that nobody would actually cast her in the opera - even though she had made a wonderful recording of it years before. This shows how much she loved it!
She hardly "past her prime!" Her voice sounds full and magnificent here. She was the greatest lyric soprano of the 20th century bar none, if that's how you classify her voice. Artistically, she was absolutely peerless. Elly Ameling comes second. Then, Joan Sutherland, et al.
Beautiful! It amazing to note that despite this being a private, amateur (?) recording, the full spectrum delightful voice of Victoria de Los Angeles carries through, giving us listeners a very pleasant treat!
Praise to you for this treasurable film of a great artist as Carmen in live performance. This must be the only film of De Los Angeles in that opera. I hope you have other treasures to share. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this. I had no idea anyone filmed it. I was at this performance. She was wonderful. Not bad for a 55 year old singer!! She was great on stage. If you have the Card Song, please post it. There is to little of her live in opera. This is a great find.Thank you.

Besides all the remarkable aspects of de los Angeles in this or any role, and at any age, she's probably the only Carmen who actually plays the castanets, rather than faking it.
the great scandal is that in the absolute heyday of De Los Angeles's career, no theater ould offer her Carmen. Its hard to believe...especially why did this not happen in Spain. Her recording for EMI with Beecham afermore than sixty years, still remains the greatest recording of the piece. I was also present at these performances. Yes, it was a bit late but remained the great artist she always was.

She taught me (by listening to her records) how to sing “Era la vo” to my babies, a gorgeous Sicilian lullaby that is posted here!

Happy to say I was there

Does she sing in the original key? Is she actually a mezzo-lyric soprano?
Ah, the glorious Victoria de Los Angeles...the best
What a voice. Victoria forever 👏👏👏👏🌸💘🌹🌺
I was there! She was wonderful, a real Carmen!
La grandísima Victoria de los Angeles!!!!!
That's my father standing next to her... Ricardo Calleo. Do you have any more recording of this performance?
+Curtiss CALLEO chapeau!
Lovely to see and hear Victoria in a live performance.
You can tell she's clearly loving this!
She neither looks nor sounds 55! THe physical acting is of its era BUT the vocal acting is timeless and all supported by that gorgeous voice. Wow!
It's opera. It's not real life.

extraordinaria
Wow, amazing Victoria !!!
gorgeous sound, unique artistry as always

Excelente..
Entrou para a história da ópera com muita dignidade e competência.
Deus a tenha.
Thank you

Wonderful clip of a delightful singer.
Can you tell me where and when this was and who the tenor is? Thank you
Omg is that really her?!
Not much can be heard over the orchestra. The tenor
