  • In 1959 the famous Spanish operatic and lieder lyric soprano from Barcelona,Victoria de los Angeles sang Mozart's Exultate Jubilate in Abbey Road Recording Studio 1 London with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult.
    Sung in Latin.
    English translation:-
    Rejoice, shout,
    O ye blessed souls,
    Singing sweet hymns ;
    Responding to your song
    The skies sing psalms with me.
    The friendly daylight shines,
    Both clouds and storms have now fled ;
    For the righteous and unexpected calm has come.
    Everywhere dark night reigns ;
    Rise up at last in gladness,
    Ye that were afraid till now,
    And joyfully present to the happy dawn
    handfuls of lilies.
    Thou crown of virgins,
    Give us peace,
    Thou, ready to give comfort
    Wherever a heart sighs.
    ALLELUJAH ! ALLELUJAH !...

    When singers knew how to sing, when they had solid techniques, understood style, taste, diction, elegance...This performance is so gorgeous, it brings tears to my eyes.

      Yes Victoria had a very good solid technique learnt from her Professors in Barcelona, and her formative years singing in the evenings with the Ars Musicae ensemble in Barcelona before stepping out on to the International stage.

    Victoria de Los Angeles, one of my favourite singers. She had a voice very unique in character. Warm, velvet-like, never forced, simply pleasant...

      Probably, singers of today will be missed in a few decades as we miss now the old ones.

      @James Mccourt whoah you've spent some time elaborating that reply. It's nice that you got to listen to all of these singers, but musical taste is not only acquired by passively listening. One can listen to thousands of hours of music and still not get the subtle difference between good singing and bad/ mediocre singing.

      @@mihordeadana2368 Unfortunately you're right! It would be really great if each generation would have the joy of great singers. But you're right today I only see one mezzo (Elina Garanca) who comes close to singers like Victoria de los Angeles (together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf) also my favorite soprano!

    Victoria de los Angeles est toujours (en 2017) ma soprano lyrique préférée sachant que , adolescent , je l avais entendue à la radio interpréter la 5ème des bachianas brasileiras de Heitor Villa Lobos vers le milieu des années 1950

    ascoltata in un recital alla Scala...mi stupì per l'eleganza e la Naturalezza con la quale dominava ...un repertorio liederistico prezioso ...nei bis ...con un pubblico internazionale che l'acclamava ...ci deliziò con arie d'opera ...che fecero oscillare il lampadario famoso dagli applausi...e ci salutò come solo i grandi possono fare con una Ninna Nanna spagnola ...indimenticabile veramente per la Gioia del suo trasmettere il suo talento. Con la Cabajelle... e la Berganza allora erano di casa...e fu un bel momento..... forse irrepetibile per proposte e talento?...anche perchè con questa nuova peste i teatri soffrono e Niente sarà più come prima...per una lunga stagione di cambiamento sociali ...politici...e il Teatro pare lascerà una strage di Maestranze coi fichi secchi?...speriamo di no. Senza il teatro la musica diventa colonna sonora.

    I remember this well, a jewel set in both Mozart's & Victoria's crowns. I love how the latter, never professing to be or known as a Mozartian soprano, mastered every so-called problem posed by the best composer for the voice (my opinion). Her virtuosity is always in service to the music, the recitatives, truly sung on the breath, are a wonder of pulsating significance.
    Molte grazie for this rarety in both quality & availability!

    Don't know why, is it Freudian? but I could listen all day to the female voice - most especially Victoria's beautiful one. That's not to say that I don't love all beautiful voices but give me the great soprano every time. Maybe it's the sweetness of it!

      La coloratura ligada era impecable, también en su Rossini... De manera natural, como sin esforzarse, simplemente porque es así como tiene que ser.

      @James Mccourt Mine too. Yet it all started w her Mimi! I was 18. And 19 when I met her for the 1st time... at Carnegie Hall. The whole period passed like an on-going dream. She had all she needed... plus that extra something. And her entry onto the recital stage w that proud toss of her head... irresistible!

    Heard her in the Festival Hall in the 60s and then in the 80s in Dunfermline. Voice had not aged. Apparently she had to continue singing because of Franco Spain’s antediluvian divorce laws. Could stand corrected.
