  • The AMD Radeon 7800XT is here and it barely beats the AMD Radeon 6800XT. The 7800XT is a good value proposition but a disappointment for the gamers who waited 3 years for an upgrade.

    I feel like people bought the 7800xt in the hopes that it would get better overtime similar to the 6800xt? Seeing the numbers and how they built the card it doesn’t seem like that’s going to be the case this time. Still blows my mind how the 6800xt is still so dominate. What a great card.

      @@lamjay6656 Worst case scenario, you get a modestly more power efficient card which will likely be supported for longer AND have a higher resale value simply because people will know that it's likely to be newer and less used than any used 6800 XT. It already trades blows with the 6800 XT, and it has AI accelerators in it which could easily end up eventually supporting features which won't be supported on the 6000 series.

    Loved the video! This is the first time RUclips randomly recommended your channel to me, and I like what I see so far. I will definitely watch a few more of your videos!
    I think the reason people are loving all over the 7800 XT is quite simple, really: people have been starved of affordable cards for so long now, first because of crypto, then covid, and then AI + Nvidia/AMD greed, that they were just itching to jump at the chance to get an actually relatively affordable current gen card.
    Yeah, the 7800 XT is only marginally faster than the 6800 XT, and a bit more power-efficient, but a lot of people always want the new over the old. And the 7800 XT is likely to get driver support and will be better optimized for new games for much longer than the 6800 XT. This is important for people who buy their cards with the intent of getting many years of gaming out of them. I'm not one of them, I upgrade long before the card stops getting updates or even before game devs stop caring about optimizing their games for it, but I do understand that a lot of people look for value and longevity.
    The 4070 is a great alternative to consider. While being 100 dollars more expensive (or 50 dollars with the non-official discounts to 549 we've been seeing here and there), and slightly slower, it has the RT and Frame Gen trump card that AMD simply cannot compete with. I personally don't care for either RT or FG, but I know some people absolutely love it. To me it's a toss-up between these two cards.
    I'd probably personally go with the 7800 XT simply because the success of 7800 XT is going to force Nvidia to rein in their greed a little bit (as we've already seen with the 50 dollar discounts on the 4070 as a direct response to the success of the 7800 XT).

    • @x8jason8x
      @x8jason8x 9 месяцев назад

      I can tell you're not a 70 class user. The frame gen and RT are so lacking as to be almost useless, even DLSS 3 can't make that card a good value.

Things sell out and I go about my business like oh well eventually. I'm down for Starfield bundle though it's also on Gamepass, I don't like gamepass and assume mod support will be greater via Steam. My main concern is Tehchtober deals and Prime deals coming up. The lady keeps telling me to just get a new GPU. Exactly. The 7800xt has nearly identical performance with less power consumption, and when compared to the reference card in GN’s video, the OC nitro is running even hotter. To still remain within 5-10 fps is to remain within a margin of error that no one will be able to tell apart in real life, and that power savings will cover the $50 difference in cost between a new 7800xt at $500, and a still new 6800xt in ~200hours (of gaming @370watt draw) at an extremely conservative cost per kilowatt.
      Using the same argument as is made in this video and discounting AMD’s naming, the top tier bin on the 6800xt and 6900xt should be compared with top tier bin of this generation, the 7900xt, which is significantly faster and offers even better watt/performance than previous gens. It’s modest for AMD to say that the 7800xt doesn’t compete with the 6800xt when it does. And it does so by doing everything the 6800xt does, more efficiently and with less to work with.

    I'd theorize that the average non-enthusiast buyer is looking at the 7800xt as a far better value due to having 16GB of VRAM (vs 12 on the 4070), being the latest gen, and being a lower priced option. A non-enthusiast will assume that the 16GB 7800xt is more than the 4070's 12GB, so bigger is better. I do think some enthusiasts are buying the 7800xt as a "screw you" to Nvidia, and some are hoping to see improvements through driver updates, Hyper-RX developments, and FSR3 that will happen over time. However, we enthusiast are a niche target audience. I think system integrators are probably the one's buying out this initial batch, and will continue to do so as long as Nvidia does not offer a 16GB card for less than a thousand dollars.

      @Flameancer 9 месяцев назад

      I mean unless you really care about RT. Performance wise the 7800xt is still arguably a better card than the 4070 especially at the price a 4070 is. I would call myself an enthusiast and I think think this card is good enough for the price. I don’t think people in this price range are the type to buy a new GPU every year. While the naming is stupid you can either think of this as a decent upgraded 6800(non XT) if you go by the specs or a better power efficient 6800xt.
      If you’re on a 6800XT/3080 this would be a side grade. Anything less would still be an upgrade. The real problem with this card at the price is that it kinda invalidates the 7700XT, but that’s more on the 7700XT being priced so high. Perhaps a $375 would’ve better then both would’ve absolutely destroyed the 4060ti.

    I know this video is 5 months old by now, but to understand the 7800 XT's success you need a new perspective...
    You could buy a 6800 XT for less, but then you lose AV1 encoding (it might not be that useful now, but that "future-proofs" the card, it's good for recording, streaming and VR)
    You could buy 7700 XT for less, but then you lose some VRAM and performance, so you'll feel the need to upgrade the your GPU sooner.
    You could buy a 7600 XT (16gb) for way less, you got plenty of VRAM, AV1 encoding, but you have no performance to back that up, it's a complete waste.
    The 7800 XT is the "perfect" all-rounder, it does it all at a decent price, AV1 is a nice to have, 16gb VRAM is plenty for a few years, and the performance covers 2 of the 3 main resolutions (1080p and 1440p)
    At least, that's my "consumer POV", because these are the reasons that make me want to buy this card, the 7700 XT is great value with 12gb of VRAM, but then the next game might need 14gb at 1080p, then I'm screwed all over again (I bought a 6600 when all the RUclipsrs were saying that 8gb was enough for 1080p, then Resident Evil 4 came out)

    For people that only buy new, sure, the 7800xt is an OK deal, but for buying in the used market i can find some 6800xt @ $400, so it's $100 less than a 7800xt, and that will make a lot of sense to buy one, especialy if i sell my old card for $200 or so. Heck i even found a 6950xt for $450 a few weeks back wich is a faster card than the 7800xt. The bottom line is that the 7000series cards were a disapointment of technology compared to 6000 series, and it's only midly OK on the top range because Nvidia has gone full greed mode and their cards are either grossly overpriced and lack VRam and people are still upset with the whole 30 series 8Gb fiasco. Also, I ran a poll to see what my audience thought. The majority voted and said it was a “meh” card. However, the comments suggest people are very happy with it because of the price.
      Yeah that’s what shifting the product stack means. The company cuts the hardware down in various combinations, then they name it a higher tier card. Idk how familiar you are with Nvidia. But the 4070 Ti is a prime example of this. Originally, the 4070 TI was going to be the 4080 12 GB model and it was going to cost $100 more. This is all well documented all over the internet. Interesting. You could have bought a 6800XT and been fine. As you saw in the video, the 6800XT and 7800XT are basically the same performance. Also, the 6800XT isn’t “60%” faster than a 6700XT. It’s about 42% faster. Here is a link to show that. Look at the relative performance chart. www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6700-xt.c3695

      @@x8jason8x So I went back to the link I shared above and checked the relative performance. It says the 7800XT is 6% faster than the 6800XT. But looking at the fine print, I think that is based on 4K data. Which I wouldn’t use either card for 4K so that’s not exactly fair I don’t think? But yeah either way, the 7800 XT is selling well and most people love it. I see it as a marginally improved version of the 6800XT. But I suppose it has such a positive reception because of all the other bad GPUs this generation.

    There is one scenario where a 30 series Nvidia card owner may want to consider upgrading to a 7800XT and that is if they have a card with only 8 GB of vram and they are hitting the limit in the games they are playing. Some new titles are requiring more than 8 GB of vram for optimal performance. The vram issue is the biggest reason why I traded my 3070 in and got a 7800XT. Fortunately Newegg was offering me close to what I would have sold the card for on the used market, making the process of upgrading less painful.

      For example. I have a 3060Ti that I bought from a desmounted mining rig and I was thinking about to replace it for a new GPU, but I have a small matx case that won't fit a 6800xt, and could fit a 2 fan 7800xt nicely. Scenarios will exist. The problem with the 7800xt is that I can't find it to buy, I don't care that it is not a 6800xt substitute.

    • @x8jason8x
      @x8jason8x 9 месяцев назад +1

      I'd agree in the sense that it seems 8GB may not even be enough for 1080p with UE5. If you're not getting the newest and most demanding titles with everything set to ultra, an 8GB card should still do 1080p quite well for the foreseeable future. I'm no fan of RT, but people who are may want to stick with an nVidia card as well, AMD isn't really improving much there.

    The 7800XT is a Step down die not a "Cut-down" die. It is the full N32. The 6800XT and 6800 were Cut-down N21. I'm sure you already know this but it's bot what you said in the video.

      @ErockOnTech  9 месяцев назад

      Yep, you’re correct. Sorry about the wording. I was really more focused on the fact that the product stack shifted. The 6800 cards were part of the best die size, even if they were cut down. The 7800 XT may be the full die, but it’s not the best die size available. I think this change, along with some other cuts to the hardware, allowed for the 6800 XT to match and beat the 7800 XT in a variety of scenarios.

    This generation is fail both for nvidia and amd. Only the top high end cards are decent but thats not within most peoples budget. I hope next generation will be better. There are leaks that 5090 will be around 70% faster than 4090 which is a good leap in perfomance but what if its only for the top end again and lower tier cards will again have marginal perfomance increase or will be priced terribly again.

    Personally I think the rx 7800 xt is basically the rx 6800 xt v1.5 ... Even though they explicitly said that its not meant to compete with that card.
    The rx 7800 xt performs basically the same RIGHT NOW. But it has rdna3 instead of 2, it has 120 AI accelerator units (6800 has none), and it uses 15-20% less power. Its definitely worth buying it over the 6800 since the price is near identical. Its going to have much better longevity as a brand new card with all these updated features. The rx 6800 xt is over 3 years old now.

    The name is dumb, but the price is not. If you adjust for inflation, it's CHEAPER than the launch price of the 6700 XT two and a half years earlier, and it's also 43% faster, with 33% more Vram, significantly more memory bandwidth, lower power consumption, and the quality of the coolers is, on average, definitely superior as well.
    Inflation over the past three years has been much higher than normal, and 480 USD in early 2021 is equivalent to around 540 USD today.
    Probably the 6700 XT's MSRP would have been a bit lower if it hadn't launched in the middle of the GPU shortage, however, it was nearly impossible to even find them for the MSRP at that time, and the MSRP was never going to be all that much lower than 480, even if there hadn't been a GPU shortage at the time (probably closer to 450 or 430). Even compared to that hypothetically lower price, the 7800 XT for 500 USD is a significant improvement in value per dollar and performance per dollar. This inflation would have happened even if AMD had never tried to take advantage of the GPU shortage by raising prices at the time.
    The 6800 XT (and other 6000 series models) being lowered in price to offer similar value per dollar to the upcoming next gen cards before some of those next gen cards were released is nothing new, and yet most reviewers and techtube gaming channels commenting on this are acting like this has never happened before. There was a longer than normal period while the 6800 XT and other 6000 series cards had dropped in price before the 7800 XT was released, and there was unusually high inflation since the release of the previous generation, and somehow this combination of factors seems to have broken most people's brains. YOU ALL NEED TO GET BETTER AT MATH!

It gets outperformed by its predecessor in some games due to lackluster hardware upgrades. With some downgrades in cetain specs. Unacceptable. It's true that it should probably have been called the 7700 XT, but it's still a good value card. 6700 XT had an MSRP of $479 and with inflation that makes the current $499 the same price or cheaper for a good performance and VRAM increase.
