I love how the beginning "hum" part is like a homage to the 9th Doctors theme! It's like the Doctors theme evolved from mysterious/damaged from the time war to then bombastic and hopefully, and now she carries both a sense of adventure and mystery with her.

@@stewartmair3995 Well, of course, an orchestra contains "traditional" instrumentation, but I was talking more the mix of orchestration with tonal aspects which is classed as sound design as it was developed by manipulating sound, rather than relying on an instrument to play it. I wasn't criticising anything, but rather commending Segun on mixing the two which reflects what Hollywood is moving towards; blurring the lines between classical orchestration and sound design. But I'm glad you're sticking up for symphony orchestras :)

I’m finally realizing my main critique of this series.
It didn’t give Segun a reason to play this theme in full.
Maybe it’s in the New Years Special, but hearing that iconic Doctor’s Theme humming by the end of this video, I see an incredibly powerful and captivating moment of Thirteen in complete silence doing something amazing and walking straight toward the camera. It’s just not happened yet. For a Doctor not to get their shining exemplary moment in their entire first series is a mistake.

Something I find truly delightful is that this theme is almost entirely in major keys. The Doctor has finally managed to leave her survivor's guilt over the Time War behind and has truly taken a level in kindness.

Having watched DW for 40 years... Murray Golds music was a pretty small splash, samey, to bombastic, boring. The new composer at least mixes it up a fair bit and at least the show sounds like a sci fi again. Hell i hope if there is a Sea Devil episode this series as it seems, that they pay some homage to the great and powerful Kazoo (sure it was from the Silurians but hey Sea Devils and Silurians are one in the same really, and sure it was kinda cheesy but it just... worked... music wise).

Jodie's Doctor brought a change that wasn't wanted, but one that was necessary. I'm not sure about anyone else, but late 2018 was an exceptionally monumental time in my life. For the first time in my adolescence, I was on my own and had to find my own way through life. It's a time I'll always look back on.
Peter was my favourite Doctor, so when he regenerated into Jodie it marked a huge passing in my life. Gone were my youthful, innocent days. Things felt weird. Almost as if everything I'd once enjoyed had been taken away.
Now 4 years on from then, I've realised that when things seem like they're at their worst, they always get better in time. No problem is a problem for too long. That's life.
Thank you Jodie. Even though you weren't my favourite doctor, you represent a huge era of my life and even though it's only 4 years, I'll never ever forget that period of time.

Segun has done some very good work on this series, but I think his music has been a little one dimensional in the regular music episodes (i.e. excluding Rosa and Punjab), it's atmospheric but isn't really driving the action. Y'know, I'm genuinely going to miss this theme. The series struggled to find it's new identity after such a massive studio/crew rotation, (and with the grognards already deciding they were going to hate it before it ever began airing, it was facing an uphill battle all the way) but one thing it succeeded at that I've been wanting for years is that it *actually* felt like the Doctor was moving on from the Last Time War, which has completely dominated his outlook during her previous regenerations. Previous themes got across the feeling of wonder laced with pathos and menace. This theme is wonder unshackled from that pathos and menace, and with the resolution of Whittaker's run, it's also a conscious choice to not be re-shackled by her past, as tempting as the need to know can be.

Might just be my taste but I love this theme, I wish it got more use in the series itself but Segun really did great work with this; it feels both familiar and different at the same time, while marking itself as distinctly new in the process, I love the little homages (if that’s what they are) to the 9th/10th Doctor’s theme(s), given that’s what played when Jodie’s Doctor first turned up, before building a hopeful, heroic, and maybe even remorseful crescendo that just makes me smile.
Say what you want about this era, I know I have, but Akinola deserves more credit for his contributions and I’m happy we had him working on the show for the time that we did.

Many of 13’s character traits made sense as a progression from 12. After a long journey contemplating morality and identity, 12 truly found himself as the Doctor towards his latter years. Thirteen embodied Twelfth’s last words (“Laugh hard, run fast, be kind”) and unlike 10 and 11, who were also quite adventurous, 13 no longer deals with the guilt of the Time War and thus defines herself as “just a traveller”. This piece of music captures her adventurous spirit quite well as she brings a ‘new dawn’. While the other NewWho Doctors had grand, orchestral music, 13’s one feels more (I don’t know the word), more about the nature and beauty of the environment. It is always like she can just sit back and enjoy the simplicity of life. Her warm heart and exuberant energy makes her likeable at least to myself. She would probably be an amazing person to know in real life.
Even so, I can agree that many of the other fan’s criticisms are well-founded and many of which I absolutely agree. Jodie Whittaker does have moments of awkward line delivery, especially towards the end of her sentences. Perhaps it’s just her accent. She does indeed lacks a sense of gravitas and authority the other 4 doctors before her had. They may have tried a doctory moment with her confronting the Thijarians in ‘Demons of the Punjab’ however it was not very effective. Normally when the Doctor gives a speech about protecting, they do something epic afterwards. 13 did not do anything epic afterwards, instead ran away from the Thijarians with her awkward, high pitched delivery of “Get out of the forest!”, in doing so it lost any sense of momentum from her speech. Whilst I have no faults with Whittaker’s delivery of the speech, the dialogue itself was highly generic and pales in comparison to either 11’s ‘Basically Run.’ Speech or 12’s speech in Flatline.
Compare 13 to how much characterization and depth the other 4 Doctors were able to establish in their first series. 9 hid behind a cheeky grin and manic energy, guilt and self-loathing that would lash out into anger whenever he was reminded of it (the Daleks). Having fought in a war for so longer he was quite disconnected to humanity whom he called ‘apes’. He rude and dismissive of those who did not impress him, initially treating Mickey poorly. Through Rose, he regained his compassion and love of humanity. He had a clear character arc. 10 was bubbly and energetic, just like 13, however he showed much more depth. A sense of loneliness as a Time Lord living past humans, sense of idealism in humanity, carrying on the burden as the Last of the Time Lords and showed a self-righteous, arrogant side in assuming himself as the highest authority and enacting cruel punishment (Sycorax, Harriet Jones). 11 also carried that youthful enthusiasm that hid the weariness of an old man who tried running away from his pain. The fairy tail motifs, his tendency towards secrecy while also liking attention, ability to relate so well to children and Matt Smith’s strong choices in his physicality. 12 and his big identity crisis. Struggling to relate to ‘pudding brains’, cold detachment in order to order to save lives, social awkwardness, his ego, his desire for knowledge, his jealousy of Danny, his dislike of soldiers and his vulnerability over being a good man, his show of love through actions over words. These Doctors showed depth while at the same time established charisma and a powerful, authorative presence. How much depth has 13 had in comparison?
Where is the alieness that the Doctor should have? Even Ten who was perhaps the most human Doctor, still felt alien because of his authority as a Time Lord and how he felt he could never be understood by humans. She just feels like a quirk human. Given her progression moving away from the Time War, I can understand why she won’t have many dark moments. Her self-righteous in some ways is similar to 10. However unlike 10 whose actions in his first episode could be treated as character flaws, the way 13 is written, it is almost expected that we have to take her side on the issues. Guns and killing is bad and if anyone disagrees you are bad. But it is not treated as a flaw, even though it could make her more interesting especially considering how she wants to live up to 12’s expectations I don’t think she has much chemistry with her companions and unlike the other Doctors, does not grow much as a character from interacting with her companions.
Bare in mind she still has room to improve. Remember the other Doctors also received a lot of criticism in their first series. I hope that everyone in the Doctor Who community can try to respect each other’s opinions, even if they disagree.
Tl;dr: 13 is likable as a person but going by her first series she has yet to live up to the legacy of the ‘Doctor’, at least in ‘NewWho’.

i can't help but agree, and i love the thirteenth doctor. series 11 really suffered from a lack of vision and theme, the lack of character arc for the Doctor. it feels like chibnall somehow forgot that the Doctor is the main character....and/or he assumes he's got all the time in the world to tell whatever story he's trying to tell (the fact that i have no idea what it is after a whole series says enough) - but that doesn't work for a show like Doctor Who. this isn't broadchurch.
