The haka is arguably the most sacred military and history tradition in the world. To accept a challenge like that and not back down is actually a sign of respect. The haka is an invitation to do battle, and the Irish gratefully accepted.
You can tell the mutual respect between them is there. Fair play to both teams.
Massive respect for Ireland, well, done!!! from Argentina.
Probably still the greatest ever response to the haka from any team.
im irish and i have to say i love the statement at the end '' he played well that day ...... but they still lost '' fuckin brilliant haha :L
😂
Irish and proud
Jack Rodgers I’m half Irish

Well played Ireland last night for putting in the performance of a lifetime and beating the all blacks! From an England fan, we were all cheering you on and you managed to do what we just missed out on. Was going to say I bet the hangovers are big this morning, but my guess is you’re still going! ☘️🍺
Ye was a great win and a even better party! I certainly was cheering you guys on the week before as well, England were the better team on the day and they deserved more . We're not as bad as those down south thin we are up here. Lets hope one of us proves it to them when the world cup rolls around. Old rivalries aside (its all just banter anyway) if Ireland can't do it I'd happily cheer on any of the four teams from these islands.......and maybe even the frogs!
How was your party after the latest tour on nz
"If you're intimidated by a challenge like that, then don't step on the field"
I'd argue that if they are unsettled by a team standing up to their 'challenge' then it is they who should not step on the field.
Im a kiwi but mad respect to the irish for meeting the challenge, good to see even if this is old
What Irish did in '89 was exactly what Rugby fans want to see, they pushed it to the limit, they made the game even more excited, they TOOK the challenge, and they challenged the challengers :) Rugby is a game, and games need some sort of variety. There was no dissrespect in that game, it was awesome. Wish these days we had more of this :)
Irish lost that day, but they made the day memorable. I haven't seen any other team standing up to All Blacks, and practically, challenging them back.
i like how they aren't offended by it at all. they actually enjoyed the irish doing this. class stuff
what a win for us tonight in Chicago !!! go on Ireland !
We are the only team from the northern hemosphere to stand up to the haka most teams just stand on their 22 or sometimes on the 10 or halfway line but still just stand there. I'm proud that we challanged the haka!
Brilliant. Should be the standard response to the haka. Love the haka but teams should be allowed to respond any way they like to it.
Current gen z geratuon don't have the balls
Seeing this few minutes before the Quarter Final - go Ireland!
Best wishes from Germany
Fair play to the all blacks the took it well. And seen it for what it was.
us irish challenged the haka but with the respect it was given to us.the irish are not english and we appreciate other traditions as we appreciate our own e>g. not backing down to the haka but we respect it and new zealanders should respect the irish dont back to a challenge or fight.
'first applause by doing a dance'....lol
willie you're a legend
I'm from the school he teaches he is a legend one of the greats
We consider the word kiwi a compliment so I just want to thank you for that. It was very nice of you to reply to a detrimental comment to your country with a compliment :)
It was absolutely respectful what the Irish did...to meet a challenge with a challenge.
@chaelo I think he means in general Irish people won't back down for anybody. If they go down they go down fighting.
This is great. I read a lot of comments about this being disrespectful & whatnot, but the Haka is war dance. Its purpose is to intimidate the opposition. In international test rugby, psychological advantage plays a big part in winning the game. You'd do well not to allow arguably the strongest rugby team in the world to have the psychological upper hand on your own soil before the game's even started. Fairplay to Ireland.
The haka is great now that it is rehearsed and choreographed. Up until 2000 it was all a bit namby-pamby, this one included. A load of Irishmen singing Danny Boy in your face is way more intimidating. Fair play though, Piri and Ma etc have made it a true spectacle now.
My dad told me about this game. He says that the first two minutes were like a warzone with the players deliberately smashing each other in pulps.
Remember watching on TV in Ireland as it was happening - great response from the Irish but All Blacks well worth the win that day. Buck Shelford what a legend - I was scared just reading the stories about him, let alone facing him on a pitch!! 😅
Ireland ireland standing tall. Shoulder to shoulder. Answering irelands call. . Brillant
This is still one of my favorite hakas
The welsh just stood their ground for what seemed an eternity. The Irish saw the challenge and raised them a middle finger lol
good on Ireland we kiwis love a bit of biff. Haka is laying down the challenge.Ireland did that. Good stuff
Haka doesn't mean challenge!
How can't you LOVE Ireland after this? Sooo beautiful: men against men.. "Face to face". wonderful.
My two favorite teams :)
well its an Irish tradition to stand up for themselves...especially on home soil.
Looked like the Irish boys were about to break Into a Riverdance routine 😁
800 years war against the English should have taught people something
We will meet you on the battlefield. May our respecrive warriors win 🫶🏻
Back when we were in our prime. Life was truely so much better and different
"I think that the haka should only be performed in New Zealand. It is bloody cheeky and disrespectful to go to another country and make everybody watch them dance and shout."
But it is a great tradition, and the fans expect the Haka- lets face it, its great fun to watch and it gets not only the players, but the fans hyped.
We must never forget, ...the Gael is a race of amazing men and women !
What a challange. BTW, which vid was this originally from?
it takes the irish to do love being irish and the pride of it
Thats why they call us the Fighting Irish. Big respect to the Almighty All-Blacks and the Irish.
Shelford and Mexted, were brilliant no 8's, hard as nails and great ball players, and I'm English! As Shelford says, he respected it! How different when Richard Cockerill did the same at Old Trafford against, he got a real dressing down from the pompous "Oh we can't have that" RFU. If Johnno wants to make a go of the England job, these characters need to be looked at! Carling spoke about this years back but wasn't supported, funny how some are now coming out and saying he had a point, cowards!
good 1 Fitzy u stood there after it all bro
thats why you were king 2 and an elite captain much props , lol !
Craig Dowd, Mike Brewer and Buck Shelford are three blokes I personally wouldn't want to get that close to during a haka but fair play to the Irish.
yeah. it could be easy for people to think, especially in this pc age, 'eee you can't do that!'
its good to see that even though it is a maori war challenge of so long ago, it is still used in that way and not as another national anthem - if you see what i mean
played a new zealand touring side, and they did the haka against us, have to say, doesn't look as scary as it is, that irish boy's a nutter, good effort
@pat23flipsol : that 2009 grand slam begs to differ, as do the heineken cup and magners league wins by Leinster and Munster respectively in that same year
@chaelo Remind me the last time South Africa beat Ireland??? Have a good recent record against Australia too. To be honest, the All Blacks are consistently almost unbeatable. As for the Haka, tradition is very well respected by the Irish, shown that day in a sand against intimidation in their own back yard. I personally think it's brilliant
Yes, exactly> Why do so many people take offense from this? It;s simply accepting the challenge...
Rowing, sailing, rowing....sailing...um....marathons....rowing....sailing....it's not just rugby!
Someone should challenge the "Haka" with the "Maka Paka dance" no????.....That would be class!
Polish living in Athenry for last 20y.Proud as feck
...for the record I agree with you on the other guys typing, took me a while to make head nor tail of it!
Only a small percent of people find it offending. It's the best way to accept a challenge in my opinion
Awesome rugby moment. I love Willie Anderson - what an 'eader!
Irish rocks! love them! Kiwis are awesome too though!!
Is it me or is Muse playing at the end :D
:P But awesome stuff
@jdfiend2 Not true, Rugby is the 3rd most popular sport in the world, the Rugby World Cup is the 3rd most watched sporting event in the world (behind the Summer Olympics & the FIFA World Cup).
that was awesome
both sides showing their love and pride for their country
What give the Haka its potency is that it takes place immediately before the k/o. In away games the opponents should make them do it before the anthems so it's relegated to being merely part of the build-up.
mad respect to both sides. Kiwi's challenge with the Haka and Irish except. Nothing wring with that
I'm not dising the Irish Rugby team i'm a huge fan of both Ulster & Ireland i love them teams
@teambrucewillis i'm a swede, and boy i wish i were irish...
it's actually a tradition of somoa that the all blacks stole so no quarms with what the irish team did.
Fucking brilliant. I also like when the aussies used to just laugh at them while they did it.
The reason Ireland and New zealand win a lot is because boat peoples are of tribal origin which gives them that extra kick.
@THESKULL1979 Awesome come back m8 bravo
@gabrielirlanda Disrespect would lead to even more painful defeat. Respect them, stand up and compete. The Haka is not even a callout, it ha a beautiful and noble meaning, and should not be disrespected by anybody, never.
Similarly to the Blacks Haka dance, the Irish rugby team should do the same thing by performing the River dance to intimidate.
Yes be very funny
@@m.mairenishuilleabhain6298 she was joking
@@m.mairenishuilleabhain6298 no problem shit
@@m.mairenishuilleabhain6298 no i havent keyboard warrior byeeee
@@m.mairenishuilleabhain6298 things just go right over your head you said sherlock i said shit = no shit sherlock
@gabrielirlanda There's lots of other ways to challenge them in that moment without disrespecting them.
thats brillaint shame we still fecking cannot beat them... frustrating!!!
Thats the way to stand up to the haka,lm Kiwi....love the fighting spirit of the Irish.
Love the haka really do but I was really annoyed as in the world Cup in 2019 a lot of fans were annoyed because we sang over the haka seen other countries do worse
it makes for a good game, it fires up both the sides! its a great thing
OK... I did my research. The score for this game
23 New Zealand
6 Ireland
All time stats when playing each other
New Zealand 21 - 0 - 1
Ireland 0 - 21 - 1
that Maori "Huff 'n' Puff" goes down better with a sprinkle of sugar and a little sour cream
@Gubberdy its only a union jack if its on a ship. otherwise its called the union flag. just thought you might wanna know...
Whats funny is that he thought what he did was beating the haka by being disrespectful and still yet to beat the All Blacks
Well who won in Chicago??
and who at Aviva Park tonight?
Love it even today....but amaze that teams get fined for responding to the haka
New Zealand with an exceptional tally of 1 World Cup!
RUGBY = RESPECT AMONG TITANS
Irish known to be like fighting, but i remember on the 99 world cup they start up a fight with australia and one island guy from the wallabies beat up one of them really bad, i think they learn a lot since that happen. they are better now, lol
the guy on the left side of the irish line looks terrified
The days when footballers wore knickers.
What happened to Wales in 2007?
@vulnerabledonkey Actually a lot of other teams have their own war dances, like Samoa and other South Pacific countries. Two of these at once can get pretty fucking intense. I also think it would be great if Wales, Ireland or Scotland were to yell fierce Celtic war cries!
Props to the Irish for standing up to the haka
I think that any challenge to the haka adds to the fanfare. I don't care how much the kiwis bitch, it sure was fun to watch.
How right you are!!!
Then the International Rugby Board messed it all up with the ten metre rule, that the fans and players did not want... Fast forward to today!!!
what doco's this??
I remember watching this game, yet again Paddy shows that they are all show and no substance whatsoever. They interrupted the All Blacks doing the Haka by walking in an arrow formation, yes yes very good. However, Paddy then went on to show they're real color and got absolutely whipped 23-6.
The purpose of the Haka is that it's meant to be a challenge. The Irish were rising up to that challenge, it's something New Zealanders highly respect.
@taweraster : mate its a rugby video..... ps. ireland took home 3 boxing medals in the last olympics, not bad considering the amount of countries which competatively practice boxing, a sport hundreds of times more popular than rugby
All Blacks Win.
"And that's how most All Black stories end."
@THINLIZZYFANno1 The Haka is not just about challenging the opposition it is to determine the war and show respect to the ancestors, by doing this it shows that you are ready to fight and will take the consequences we're lucky a fight didnt break out
The Irish should do the River Dance for the laugh... Now that would freak um out :D
Painful part is half of new zealand is Irish.
what the fuck are you smoking you deluded bitch
what would be painful is if half of them were irish.
Deluded? Check the facts. The Brits and Irish make up the largest portion of the European demographic of New Zealand, and 74% of kiwis identify as European by descent.
hey fuckwit, were half of them Irish?
+sal7t5
What she said is true ffs - get over it.
There was no pub nearby sadly
@irishmckiddo actually, you are wrong... football (soccer) is the most popular here... and although we didnt make it past the first round of the world cup, we were the only unbeaten team at the tourny
There's a difference between arrogance and knowing you're the best.
@pat23flipsol
At least we're on our way to the FIFA World Cup, not to mention we are the only Cricket team to beat the Australians this season, get more medals per capita at the Olympics than nearly every Country, you see, we're good at International sports, not just our own (aka Hurling and Gaelic Football).
21-11 actually.Ireland would've won if it wasn't for Marcus Horan's punch
