That part got me too. Makes me want to learn more about my own heritage, the new generation needs to persevere our traditions, every culture has stuff like this, we just need to get in touch with our history as individuals and bring it out in ourselves.
If I'm not mistaken, the Tika Tonu Haka is seen as a gift, from the family to the groom and the bride. And, basically, since it talks about being ready to face your adult life, when you join the Haka it does not only mean you're showing you're ready to face your life from now on, but youre returning the Haka as well, basically making a gift to your family. It's complicated, I know, but once I saw a video about this particular form of Haka and all this things was explained this way...I just hope I did not say anything wrong or stupid
When the Bride and Groom respond to the Haka , this is called": Returning the Haka". It is considered good manners, and means: "I have heard your words, and will pay heed to them".

WOW! THAT WAS AWESOME DID I FEEL THAT OR WHAT? RESPECT TO YOU ALL FOR SHARING YOUR HAKA WITH THE WORLD AND MYSELF THANK YOU TO YOU AND YOUR ANCESTORS FOR PASSING DOWN THEIR OWN TRADITIONS
Haka literally translates to breathing fire, ha = breath or exhaling ka = fire. Haka is to speak with intensity and purpose which can be used in a lot of different ways. It is often emphasised with action as well, sometimes without. While performed before wartime’s being apart of it, it can also be celebratory, supportive (haka tautoko) etc Haka is not one thing with one meaning, think of it more as a genre or conduit of expression. I have seen someone propose with Haka spontaneously composed on the spot. Haka is performed as loved ones are buried, as babies are welcomed into homes and in this case at a wedding. If you are interested in the origins of this specific Haka it is called Tika Tonu. A quick summary of its translation is a father telling his son that he has all the strength and resources within himself to overcome the obstacles he is facing in life now and in the future. If he is worried or concerned to look inside himself for the answers.
@@Si_nengatcha yes and no... my family have a haka that has been passed down from generation to generation that we use for multiple occasions.. weddings, birthdays, funerals etc it is composed as a battle haka but we use it for different things. Then there are specific haka for example a very popular powhiri haka named “te waka” is used for welcoming people which we also perform. Again although the actions and words of this haka are quite specific in their meaning this isn’ to say other people don’t use it for other things, I have heard it performed as a relative was carried to be buried.
I don’t see why…..it’s embarrassing to act like a Neanderthal at your own wedding. This is not romantic at all. Haka is a tribal dance before going to battle and white men are not supposed to do it, it’s only for the Native people, not British ancestry. Get a grip man.
2 seconds in I was a hater. 5 seconds in I realized it’s because I don’t have friends or family like this. I can’t lie. This is amazing. Respect and love.
The most moving part of all this is, for me, how the Maori--unlike so many others in this world--do not disown their mixed-race children, but accept all Maori blood as Maori. The world could learn a thing or two from this "primitive tribe."
We had some samoans and Maori on my football team back in Pop Warner football as kids lol the Moari kids and parents taught us all the haka from the rugby team. I remember the first game we played I was at the front with blood gushing from my mouth lol
Haka: Maori national dance. Hongi : The Maori greeting to put the forehead and nose together exchanging the ha; the breath of life and sharing souls. ❤️😭
Toscania I. Fulgencio Reyes I have hongi each of my children upon birth sharing their first breath into this world it might not mean much to others but means the world to me ☺️ ha ki Te ha kanohi ki Te kanohi (breath to breath face to face) I welcome you to this world my baby
As a german by nationality, I obviously did understand absolutely nothing. But as a human, I did understand every single word and gesture. It pushed me to tears also, to see them all on such a high emotional level.
i'm Aboriginal and it kills me that my ancestors culture wasn't preserved like this. I'm absolutely in awe of the Maori culture and this was so touching to watch.
In my town, the white man isn't stopping Aboriginals from expressing their culture. In fact, we have laws to protect it, and we spend a ton of white people's tax money to place Aboriginal symbolism all over the town, but the Aboriginals enjoy Subway sandwiches and alcohol too much to care. Turns out modern white man is the only ones trying to protect your own culture from yourselves abandoning it.
Areus White It really makes me sad, especially for the aboriginal people who are trying to spread their culture, when some aboriginals just don't care at all. I'd really like to see the Australian sports teams do the aboriginal war dances before games and for normal Aussies to do it at everyday celebrations like weddings, funerals and birthdays like Kiwis do with the Haka. It would help Australians understand the aboriginal culture and it could intimidate other teams and it would make the start of Australia New Zealand games absolutely mind blowing. I don't see anything wrong with that.
exohexoh its very sad.... an nzder living in aus i think it's sad how the aboriginal culture isnt as embraced as it shld be.. it shld be something that should be accumulated into the educational system. .idk maybe im wrong. But ya know what i mean?

I think the best thing is that they can do stuff like this without being called out for cultural appropriation. It's the stupidest thing ever, I'm glad thst the kiwis have such a good relationship between their different people, that's how you create a cohesive society.

I'm a white New Zealander and I love Māori culture. Māori culture is fantastic, it doesn't matter if you're white, black or Asian living in NZ because Māori culture is a part of New Zealand culture and therefore it belongs to all Kiwis.
Do you see the focus in these people's eyes! They believe everything that they're saying with all of their spirit and heart! You might see one at the airport. There's usually loved ones doing the haka for those arriving on home shores and also those leaving. Even at malls. Have a good trip.
When they cut to the bridesmaid i broke... Then they cut to the bride - my eyes watered: After they did the hongi and energy completed its circle. Just beautiful
As an American and knowing nothing of the Maori people. Watching the haka...i cant help but feel it stir something deep. Something feral and raw, pure emotion of spirit, ancient and foreign, but familiar. I have never bore witness to something more true, I need not know what it means to hear its reminder of who I am. May the Maori people live a thousand years, and may they live a thousand more after that.
The main feature of NZ society is its inclusion. The anglo population are taught all about Maori culture and history. Its part of their hertiage and is fiercely defended. I am an Australian and I married into a large NZ family. They saw it as their duty to teach me all about the Maori as well. Even after our marriage ended, the NZ side offered me support and I feel protected. Its amazing.

Māori here. To hongi is to press noses together. Hā is a verb that means ‘to breathe’, ‘to taste’, or hā can denote ‘the essence’ of a thing. So you were watching two men hongi.
I think our Maori brothers and sister discovered something about the human spirit that relates to this form of expression. I get teary eyed every single time I watch this and I don't understand the Maori language. After you understand whats being communicated you realize how beautiful it really is.
They had a huge haka with all the guests at my friends funeral (19 y/o) and everyone was so passionate and emotional, then his mother and grandparents joined in and tears started falling but it just got even more intense. answer to the last comment… The Māori culture is her culture, that’s why… Not very difficult to understand… As for everyone else being part of their own culture… Irish people listening to a piece of irish song; a classical piece on a violin, piano that refers to where you come from… I’ll go even further. You can feel emotional to listening or / and watching smth not coming from your country just because it may resonate in you as beautiful, esthetic…. Voilà !
This is absolutely amazing. I thank the family for sharing such an emotional event. Poke fun at it all you like, these people were 100% dedicated and showing the utmost respect for the bride and groom.
I can't stop watching . The energy and power coming from this just like hijacks my emotions, wraps around my spirit and lifts it up. It speaks to a part of me that is deeply seated and rarely acknowledged or touched by anything. There's much to be thankful for being an American, but our culture is so empty, weak, inauthentic, manufactured and McDonaldized. We're so divided and distant from each other. Look at the men... all different ethnicities yet they stand completely solidified. The love is so beautiful and overwhelming.
+Mia Mendez Exactly what I thought, you said it perfectly, it's so beautiful, all that energy, I would love to go to New Zealand to learn the meaning behind all those words and to learn all of this, fan-tastic.
OG Lurker it is called Haka, a traditional dance of the Māori - indigenous people of New Zealand. Haka are most commonly known from their use as a war dance, performed before battle to show how fierce and strong they are, to intimidate the enemy. Haka also are used at funerals, or to give respectful welcome to foreign dignitaries, etc. Then it is a sign of great respect. This is a coming of age variation, welcoming the son into the family, for example. There's been some viral videos of haka including this wedding above featuring the Māori bride (and groom? Many Māori pass as white) - who is clearly very emotional at the performance by their friends/wedding party and she ends up joining in, as does he. There's also many videos of New Zealand rugby/soccer/football teams the All Blacks and Black Ferns performing Haka before a game, including at the Olympics. NZ teams have been performing Haka before games for well over 100 years! If you'd like to see more, searching Haka here on RUclips will give you many options. And here's a link in case you want to read a bit. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haka?wprov=sfla1
There's also a video of a Haka done after the funeral of a young man who committed suicide. Try not to cry watching that, the Haka expresses so much raw emotion like no other.
I know what you mean. I was tearing up and I couldn't understand why. And when the bride joined in, I lost it. I was crying and smiling. So much emotions.

Good to know, ty.

The concluding story of the father and son bought me to tears (in a positive way).. Thank you.
Thank you!
May 2021 be good to you and yours.

Just wanna ask, are the words and movements different for each occasion or the same?
@@Si_nengatcha yes and no... my family have a haka that has been passed down from generation to generation that we use for multiple occasions.. weddings, birthdays, funerals etc it is composed as a battle haka but we use it for different things.
Then there are specific haka for example a very popular powhiri haka named “te waka” is used for welcoming people which we also perform. Again although the actions and words of this haka are quite specific in their meaning this isn’ to say other people don’t use it for other things, I have heard it performed as a relative was carried to be buried.
Thank you very much for the explanation.

What stops you to renew the Aboriginal culture, but for your own people, not as a tourist attraction.

May the Maori people live a thousand years, and may they live a thousand more after that.
Realist comment i think i have ever seen on RUclips.

I don't understand but somehow I know how beautiful, emotional, and important this is.
