My dad took me to see this match when I was about 8 years old. I didn't understand the significance at the time but I'm glad to be able to say I was there to witness this piece of history.

This makes me proud to be Irish. I am Irish right? I got red hair. Joking aside. What a day this was. There is a great documentary about this game and it`s importance in the Irish history. What impresses me the most is the respect the Irish sports fans have. I once attended a soccer game in Dublin. A pretty important one. Ireland vs Switzerland. Ireland had to win to qualify for the final qualifier against Turkey, a tie or loss meant Switzerland would go through. I showed up in the Irish fan sector with a Swiss flag. They gave me hard time. "We'll beat you up if your team scores." While smiling and other guys telling me that nothing will happen, they are just making fun of your bravery. It was a lot of fun that night. The guy on the left of me ignored me all game. Hey, I was the "enemy" after all. To this day, I fondly remember his sportsmanship after the game. He got up and upon leaving, shook my hand "Congratulations. Good luck against Turkey." What an absolute class act that guy.

What I've just noticed tonight about the difference in the Irish and English anthems is that England pledges allegiance to an actual person (of an entitled family no less who owns half their country) whereas the Irish anthem is about the nation, the community of people. I still remember the day even though I was young, so much controversy over the game. Only right that Ireland beat England by that much due to history of Croker and Ireland's history with England.

This makes me proud to be Irish. I am Irish right? I got red hair. Joking aside. What a day this was. There is a great documentary about this game and it`s importance in the Irish history. What impresses me the most is the respect the Irish sports fans have.
I once attended a soccer game in Dublin. A pretty important one. Ireland vs Switzerland. Ireland had to win to qualify for the final qualifier against Turkey, a tie or loss meant Switzerland would go through. I showed up in the Irish fan sector with a Swiss flag. They gave me hard time. "We'll beat you up if your team scores." While smiling and other guys telling me that nothing will happen, they are just making fun of your bravery. It was a lot of fun that night. The guy on the left of me ignored me all game. Hey, I was the "enemy" after all. To this day, I fondly remember his sportsmanship after the game. He got up and upon leaving, shook my hand "Congratulations. Good luck against Turkey." What an absolute class act that guy.
If it were New Zealand, or Fiji or Australia visiting, the respective Anthems would be played and respected: I'm glad the same was done for 'God Save the Queen', despite the negative comments..........GO IRELAND!

What I've just noticed tonight about the difference in the Irish and English anthems is that England pledges allegiance to an actual person (of an entitled family no less who owns half their country) whereas the Irish anthem is about the nation, the community of people. It was listening to The flower of Scotland that made me realise. They're the same. It's about a nation, a community ❤❤❤
The idea is supposed to be that the monarch embodies that community ( whether it’s actually an affective display of community is debatable)
I was so proud of my fellow Irish on this day! They truely were proud Irish men and women and showed some respect to a country who trampled on us for centuries! Makes me soo proud to see this and to see how far we really hav come as a country and a nation!

For me still to this day one of our finest sporting moments ever, showed respect to the " old enemy's anthem ".. I remember watching this on the day and watched with pride and still get goosebumps with the crowds rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann.. That was the moment we bet the English team.

I was there as an Irish immigrant to England - was a Gaelic Footballer -Meath Under 14 champion 1960
A Soldier's Song was written in 1907 and sung at the GPO in Dublin during the Easter rising in 1916. The lyrics were translated to the Irish language soon after the Easter rising. In 1926 the chorus of the Irish language version (Amhrán na bhFiann) was adopted as the national anthem.
The second song is Ireland's Call the Irish Rugby anthem. Ireland's Call is used as the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland share the same rugby team but are not part of the same country.
