The purpose of the Haka is that it's meant to be a challenge. The Irish were rising up to that challenge, it's something New Zealanders highly respect.
The haka is arguably the most sacred military and history tradition in the world. To accept a challenge like that and not back down is actually a sign of respect. The haka is an invitation to do battle, and the Irish gratefully accepted. You can tell the mutual respect between them is there. Fair play to both teams.
