I vividly remember watching this as it aired live. I was eleven. The same storm system that was raining on him was raining on me and I remember feeling so alive and connected and ecstatic. As soon as this set was over I went outside and ran around in the rain. Being a kid in the 90's was sublime.
For the backstory, as you can see, it is pouring rain. Bush is told not to perform as it is a safety hazard. The rest of the band sits it out but Gavin says something to the effect of screw it, the fans are in the rain, I can be too. We as fans are given one of the most touching, visceral, powerfully raw performances ever, simply because he loved the fans as much as they loved him.
Russimus I remember in an interview Gavin had, he said there was a possibility he couldn't gotten electrocuted and died. But he said if that happened, that'd be a great way to die.
exactly, not only was it the fact that he sounded amazing but the fact that he sounded THAT amazing while knowing how dangerous those conditions were for an amp/electric guitar. everything that happened during this performance was the perfect storm.
Sweet :) Great story. Gavin was such a gorgeous young man. I wish he had been shirtless in this performance like he was at Woodstock. Imagine him singing shirtless in the rain...
I was there for this one. He came out and told us they told him not to play for that reason. He did it anyway. I was there while TDY from Nellis AFB. I was drunk as a skunk. Great freaking time!
It really was, I’ve been reflecting on that for the last year or so. I didn’t realize then that we were growing up in the last days of true freedom...don’t let the days go by
@@CarpeNoctem0917 they’d killed grunge by 1998 the lost souls of grunge and the sell outs were still alive until layne died in 2002, and that was the final nail.

I remember watching this when it 1st aired on MTV. As I watched, I knew it was going to be a legendary performance; you could FEEL it happening in real time; just breathtaking!
They cut out the best part in the beginning where everyone runs offstage but Gavin. He says, "If you say out here, I'll stay out here with you" and played their final song.
HOLY CRAP! I watched as a kid on Mtv. This was amazing!!! Everyone was freaking out that they weren't going to come out because the rain was Pouring buckets! All the electrical equipment was in puddles. They could've died. But if the fans were gonna stick though it, so would they!
Jesus Christ ... I thought 20 years ago I would marry Gavin ( I was 13). 20 + damn years later I remember this well. He's insanely beautiful & this footage is memorable. Makes my eyes roll in my head still. Holy.... 💘😅 The 90's were the best.
I was 9 years old when I watched this live. I remember having goosebumps while he played and sang. It’s what inspired me to want to learn the guitar. And it was one of the first songs I learned. Such an amazing memory 🤘🏼🔥
I remember hanging out with a bunch of friends watching this when it aired.. I was maybe 10, 11 years old. There were a few older girls there.. And when I saw how they reacted during this.. Watching him just, absolutely wide eyed and in love haha. Needless to say, it was my mission to get a job, to get money, to get a guitar, to teach myself how to play and sing, to get females. All thanks to this haha.
Best performance ever hands down!!! He risked his life to sing to his loyal fans! That's the stuff RocknRoll legends are made of! I still get chills watching this video.
Still one of my fave songs of all time. I’m 40 now and I remember writing a song with my best friend when I was 16 to this melody because we didn’t understand the lyrics...now I get it🤘😎🤩❤️ I’m never alone I’m alone all the time! Here during corona...lifting my spirits with sad songs
This was in Panama City beach Florida. This club is now closed down, looking back on this is the craziest memories. Hurricane Michael was the end of this place sadly.
In my imagination I like to mix his shirtless Woodstock performance with this one in my head. A glistening Gavin risking his life for music while water falls off his chestnut curls beading up on his beautiful chiseled chest. Yeah, you can't convince me no matter how many times I see it that's not the way it went down.
Me too! Just watched the first episode of the Woodstock 99 doc and realized I've been combining the two performances in my head forever. I was CERTAIN he was shirtless in this !
Holy crap I remember watching this on MTV!! Such a long time ago but I think I stayed up late to watch it and was upset when they almost cancelled it. Then Gavin came out to everyone’s surprise and made history. Such a great moment for 90’s music.
So many comments sum this up perfectly, I have to echo what's already said - one of the most epic, live rock moments of not only the 90s, but of an entire era. The band left, he stayed, rain poured, it was classically beautiful & a great response by Gavin FOR the fans, AGAINST all the hate that Bush was enduring. Watching this live at age 12 from central Florida was indescribable, with my dad, who said at the time "this is one for the ages." He has passed now but liked Bush as well and had amazing intuition regarding things. Glycerine folks, Glycerine......
I don't think its its just nostalgia or imagination.....I think the less social media there was back then forced more social interactions, creating stronger bonds and memories......Today the memories made are passing because the aspect of social interaction has been lessened.....what magical times. (BTW I was 2 when this came out so I'm not speaking from nostaligia! :)
One of the first musicians to really make me sit up and take notice. I watched new interview about this performance and his take on it, and I became a fan pretty much instantly. Gavin was and is the real deal.
My Jr year in HS and I lived just a few hrs north of Panama City FL. Club La Vela was a hot bed of everything Sring Break at that time. I begged my parents to let me go to FL that week but alas, at 15, it wasn't to be. I remember watching this performance live sobbing to the world against the television screen, wondering why I couldn't have been a couple years older at this very moment. I still feel like I was there and this was an absolute defining moment of my teen years, much like the Beatles playing The Ed Sullivan Show that my parents witnessed many years prior.
This is super cool man Gosh I remember when MTV Showed this playing in the rain , back in the good 'ol days of them & Green Day , Offspring , Pearl Jam , Nirvana , Weezer etc ... Good Classic Alternative Rock my friends !!!!
god time flys i remember watching this it was one of the best times of my childhood my dad and i use to jam out in the car to bush and other kick ass music from the 90s he was in korea when i watched this on mtv and by the start of the new decade i was on my own working as stagehand and hae done work for bush and enjoyed every min of it and also other bands ive done work for now i got kids and cant work because of my lupus but i still go to dive bars just to hear local bands that are starting up i still wish it was the 90s again
I don't know if you were expecting comments on yours, but I was wondering if you would be open to giving me some information about lupus. See, I know someone who has lupus, but this someone can't seem to get the right treatment due to the medical "advice" this person has been from his or her doctors. If you feel like it, I am open to any opinions and resources you may have. I hope that you are living each day to the fullest and that your condition isn't keeping you from enjoying life with your family.
Classic. I will always remember watching this for the first time. I saw Bush for my first concert with No Doubt and the Goo Goo Dolls April 6, 1996 and Bush again April 7, 1997 when I met them all but Robin. ♥️
Still remember watching this live after school. Was so powerful with rain coming down and rest of band not playing. You could feel the passion and energy.i still can remember the house we were partying at and everyone quiet watching and just livin in the moment
20+ years after this performance, and I get goosebumps every time I hear this song, because of him going up there alone for the fans. This is the best song performance Ever!! Absolutely spectacular!
This will always be one of the most metal things ever. "You might be electricuted" "If they will stand in the rain, I will play" and he did, alone! Hardcore
The best ever performance if this song. For years I didn't ever stop to think of the danger he might have been in playing in the rain like this. Damn fool but still glad to have this.

This was a total badass Rock moment.

Back when MTV was actually MTV.
Nahh that's when MTV2 was MTV
MTV was so cool in the 90s
nowake MTV 2 didn’t come around for another 2 years.
Underrated comment....
He has real talent . His voice sounds exactly the same as the record
and I bet they weren't doing any editing or auto tune his voice. that shit didn't exist on live TV then
Back when things like that mattered.
Lordy that takes me back. What a great time to be alive, the 90s
u r so right; i really wanted to born and raise in 80' and 90'
I was there
It really was, I’ve been reflecting on that for the last year or so. I didn’t realize then that we were growing up in the last days of true freedom...don’t let the days go by
One of the most underrated moments in music.... This is still amazing today!
This was the last moment of 90s grunge. The last breath of grunge.
No Grudge officially died when Layne Staley did in 2002. After that, everyone but Eddie Vedder, Gavin Rossdale & Chris Cornell was dead.
Perfect description
I would say alternative was on its way out at this time and all the awesome subgenres that fell under that label...grunge being one of them.

A definite top moment of the 90's. He doesn't rush it all. He actually drags it out for a sec. The sky opened up at the perfect time.
I remember watching this when it 1st aired on MTV. As I watched, I knew it was going to be a legendary performance; you could FEEL it happening in real time; just breathtaking!
Yup I remember watching it too, and the rain is still as fucking epic as i remember.
I was in the 8th grade.
They cut out the best part in the beginning where everyone runs offstage but Gavin. He says, "If you say out here, I'll stay out here with you" and played their final song.
I remember seeing that part! Epic performer and artist.
one of the best live performances of my generation, God I'm getn old
Lonnie Franlin same hun
Honestly not a Bush Fan.
But will always give Gavin the props for this.
This was the set to get famous or die trying.
And he killed it
You have no taste then.. razor blade suitcase is a masterpiece.
Same.
was there..man time flies

I remember watching this in 1996 on my thirteen inch TV. It was the moment I fell in love with music.
I fucking love this song and that time in my life. #class of 99
I was 16 then,,man I thought I was so grown and had shit figured out lmao. Man I didn’t have a clue.
Risking electrocution to play a song is one of the most metal things ever.
a stupid thing
this is grunge
@@therealpearl5826 LOL, surely not metal, hahah.

This man has the most perfect widow’s peak I have ever seen

I remember this. MTV didn’t think they would perform. But Gavin said fuck it!
Greatest solo live performance in music history.
I was 13 in middle school ,hanging out with my friends ,riding bike and MTV was my life , saw this live as it was broadcast. Memories . Good times.
