It was a whole religion and way of life. The hyperemotionality and feeling existential and depressed. It’s quite fascinating the phenomenon that happened then. Looking back now I feel it paved the way to make seeing a shrink more mainstream. Those men and women front people in bands were so expressive they made it ok to be angry or sad or anxious. It became cool. Now everybody is doing it on self help on Instagram. But those people started it.

My Jr year in HS and I lived just a few hrs north of Panama City FL. Club La Vela was a hot bed of everything Sring Break at that time. I begged my parents to let me go to FL that week but alas, at 15, it wasn't to be. I remember watching this performance live sobbing to the world against the television screen, wondering why I couldn't have been a couple years older at this very moment. I still feel like I was there and this was an absolute defining moment of my teen years, much like the Beatles playing The Ed Sullivan Show that my parents witnessed many years prior.

Way back when the Wallflowers released this song in 1996, like most of the world, had never heard of them, much less knew that Jakob Dylan was the lead singer. From the first time I heard it, the driving backbeat, the hook of the keyboard intro, then the vocals... even then I thought "Man, this sounds like something that Bruce Springsteen would perform." Just weird that my thoughts had come true on the VMAs that year. I guess I wasn't the only one (including Bruce) that thought so. Straightforward rock and roll. And over 27 years later, this song - and this collaboration - still rocks.
