I appreciate all of your videos. Especially the ones on Samsung Galaxy phones. I just upgraded from a Galaxy S21 5G to the S23 Ultra. A big jump for me. So I'm learning much from you. Thanks for all your help.
Nicely shows what phone cameras can do with quite taxing subjects. Definitely helps having a great dark sky location to capture the Milkyway in the first place and that your latitude is such that the core sits a reasonable height above the horizon line and just out of reach of the main light pollution. Here in the UK we are blighted by light pollution and the core sits right in the worst of it washing everything out.
Expert RAW (and even normal PRO) are saving the DNGs as linear DNGs as opposed to with mosaic info like they used too, I can use denoise on DNGs taken with my older S21 Ultra stupidly enough. Absolutely hate however this update change came around. The Expert RAW astro images appear to behave like JPGs when editing just inside of a "DNG" wrapper which is suuuuper odd. Makes this mode very disappointing.
I took image with expert raw app, and i have the raw file picture, then when i take the raw file picture to the lightroom, the picture is very bad and it damaged, i dont know what happened, is this from the update
I live in Agder, Norway and I just got really into landscape-photography. Especially at night. The star of the show at night here is of course the northern lights. I just got this phone, and I am looking forward to try it out when the nights get fully dark again in fall :) In the meantime, I sometimes go out to shoot noctilucent clouds :)
Left this comment on someone else's comment here; thought it'd be nice to post for others to read. It's how i got my best results as an astrophotography enthusiast. *Pro Mode outperforms astro mode in a 'reveal the milky way' kind of way but still produces a very noisy image (unless i'm an idiot) Expert mode excells in making a good photo for a total laymen. It auto exposes depending on the amount of light in the frame and this is good/bad depending on if you're a pro or a beginner. Favoring the beginner. Using pro mode (or DeepSkyCamera which bins to 12mp and only allows 1x lens by default) and stacking the images is the better choice. I've gotten some pretty nice photos with Astro Mode (subject close, homogenous star field behind) and Astro Mode saved me hours and hours of (focus) stacking and overlaying and fusing a sky and a foreground into one image. Make sure to use multi auto focus in those circumstances. Astro Mode can create a really nice image but it doesn't do well for milky way stuff imho; too soft. But awesome for sharp subjects with nice starfields and little to no post production needed. :)*
Amazing photo. You'll get a better picture if you turn the spotlight off and get the close range cati and stuff out of the shot. The camera put a lot of energy in the details of those plants, lol
Very nice video thank you. *I have a question, I tried to make astrophotography 4 minutes but the result came out like kind of flashy white screen effect. Can you explain please why? Maybe because some close light sources?

@Brent Hall I don't know when or if Topaz Labs Poto AI or Denoise AI will be able to handle Samsung DNG RAW files correctly? At least that way, they'd be a plug-in for Adobe, ON1 or DXO.
I tend to try to stay away from high mp for astro. It increases the signal to noise radio and pixel density. That's just my personal preferences though.
I'd definitely start with pro mode, get the shots you want, and then if you still have time, you could try messing around with the astro mode in expert raw.
Im going to death valley in September. Do u think my galaxy s22+ will be able to capture the milkyway. Ive never done the night sky before and im not confident with pro mode. But would love some pointers.
Did someone try an older app version of Experr Raw (before the update)? File saving RAW format isn't done by firmware but the app. E.g. APK mirror should have them all.
I'm not sure what you mean? If you're talking about how the astro mode stacks images in camera, there's no way to know or show what's going on when it does that. This is like the 3rd video I've done using the astro mode in expert raw and showed the results. So far it's been a pretty mixed bag in my experience.
@Brent Hall on the left side of the astromode button in the expert raw app, there are 2 squares that take multiple shots to overlay them. Do you think that it is possible to take a smooth waterfall picture with this feature without long exposure and a filter ? Ty for replaying to my question! Nice content! Ty for it.
Wow, I never even noticed that 🤯🤔😅 I'll definitely mess with it and see what's up and do a video about it. Just gotta go find a waterfall in the desert...😮💨
Hello 👋 i was really looking forward to rhe Astro mode but tbh i was disappointed. Far better to just use Pro mode. Excellent video though, thank you. Btw what did you use to do the Timelapse at 7:09 ? Looks fantastic 🙌
Thanks Dave! Yeah, it's a bummer about astro mode, it's been really inconsistent for me so far. That timelapse was done with a Canon R6 and RF 24-70. It was running in the background while I was filming the video. It's the camera I edited out of the shot in one of the phone images, lol.
The timelapse in this video was done with a mirrorless camera. You can do milky way timelapses like that with the phone though. I've done videos on how to do timelapses with the phone, but it's pretty tedious. I'll do another video about doing astrolapses with phones soon though. You need the intervalometer app.
I have the s23 ultra, and whenever i use the astrophoto mode, adobe just isn't able to use the file. Same problem as you have. Unfortunately astrophoto mode is just unusable.
Oh bummer. Yeah, it seems that Samsung still hasn't been able to fix that issue with the astro in expert raw. I'd recommend just sticking with pro mode for now.
I don't have all of those phones anymore, only the 23. The s22 and 23 are definitely better than the older 2, but as far as milky way images go, they're pretty much the same. If it wasn't for this channel, I wouldn't have wasted my money upgrading to the 23. I was perfectly happy with the 22, but now I'll be paying off this 23 for another 2 years.
I have the S20 Ultra 5G and wondered if it was worthwhile to download the "Expert RAW." Based on your video, I'm guessing it might be. I didn't know it did the longer times that way. I think I'll try it and see. I am a new subscriber. I already use the pro-mode function.
If you want to try to do it in camera, you can use the white balance and tint to adjust it, but it might come out perfect since those are global adjustments. You can also use editing apps for more targeted color shifting and correcting, like snapseed or lightroom mobile on your phone, and of course, you can always take it onto your computer for even more detailed editing with photoshop, luminar, capture one, or whatever editor you want.
Sure thing man, good luck with it. Also, if you want to know what stars or constellations are, then just download a free app like the night sky map or something, it'll show you everything in your area.
No, I usually try to avoid photographing the moon with phones. To me, that's just one subject that phones still have too hard of a time being able to capture decently. Unless maybe you could get a nice slightly wider comp, like with the 3x or maybe even 10x lenses for the day before full moon rise, because that's when the ambient light will be the most even with the moon rising light.
Yeah, I just don't know what's going on with the astro mode files. sometimes, like in the video I did a few months ago, I was able to get a couple decent images from it, but most of the times it seems the phone can't get enough exposure time, even with stacking them in camera, and the dngs from the astro mode just don't seem to be playing well with adobe from what I've tried so far. Hopefully things will improve over time, or maybe it's user error and I'll figure out how I was messing things up, lol.

Oh there was a little movement for the 30 sec exposure, it just wasn't pronounced enough to see it without zooming in on the image. 15-20 sec would have been better to reduce the star trails, but on the phones, you need as much light and exposure time as you can get, so I settled for having a little bit of star trails for a longer exposure time.

Finally got the astro mode for the s21 ultra in case anyone is interested. Love the pics from Scotland Brent. Reminds me of here in Newfoundland.
Oh nice, I'm glad they're rolling out to older phones!
🤯🤯🤯🤯 just got this phone I had no idea the camera was this good or takes this good of pictures.

Perhaps you should try out trial versions of DXO or ON1 to see if they handle the S23 Ultra DNGs better than Adobe Camera RAW.
That would be interesting.

My question is how exactly to make a video like you put on 07:07
Use intervalometer
I have an s23 ultra and am looking to shoot some night shots. Should I do pro mode then? Seems like it after watching this.
I'd definitely start with pro mode, get the shots you want, and then if you still have time, you could try messing around with the astro mode in expert raw.

As long as you have clear, dark skies with no moon out, you should be good.
@BrentHall thanks. I am goin when theres no moon, so i hope the clouds aren't there.
Yep, just time it with moon not being there, and pick a spot without light pollution.
Did someone try an older app version of Experr Raw (before the update)? File saving RAW format isn't done by firmware but the app. E.g. APK mirror should have them all.

Dunno if you notice, but expert RAW is processing all pics rly hard, saturation and sharprening is so bad compared to pro mode which act as real RAW
It does seem to be doing something weird with it's dngs, or at least Adobe is just not able to read or process them well in my experience so far.
The Samsung internal photo editor handles that better. I kinda stopped using Lightroom for astrophotography
I tried this with my new ultra I got clear sky with one really bright star I think it's mars that's it! Even it's night I got blue sky
