Wowww. I have the King of Phones - S23 ultra for around a year now and jast now i learnd from you that its has a built in ND filter! Amazing. And thanks for all the other huge info and tips from you. Your one of the best photografy channel out there.
I love your channel and content! The one thing I would point out is it's easier to get blown out water highlights if there's much sun out. Even cloudy days are preferable. Again, you do a fabulous job of breaking down the whole electronic / digital stuff, and I'm convinced you nailed it all! Great job and analysis, Brent!
Thanks for putting some thoughts in your videos about the S23 Ultra. I bought the S23 Ultra few months ago without really looking into the photography features (I was just looking for a damn phone lol), kinda a shame I did not dig into it sooner and seeing those nice little update that Samsung are slipping in and having someone to test them out and gives feedback on a pro level is saving me times to go out and test myself :) Cheers!
And now.. you ended up with the Best Phone on the Market :) Btw as you sayed its not "a tiny update" by samsung about the built in NDFilters :)))) its actualy maby the biggest and best thing that they did to the bult in s23 ultra camera. You have ( S23ultra) the Best mobile Camera exist in a mobiles phones today. So use it :) P.s stik with the S23 ultra and dont "" upgrade" to the S24 ultra. In my opinion. Its not an upgrade at all but actualy the oposite. You have the king s23 ultra. You have it all already . A pro gaming phone, a Pro camera . And a superman Strong fastest phone exist. Enjoy🎉
Although it has dropped, it's supposed to be a higher quality lens meaning you have more room to crop the photo to what would look like a 10x shot but with more detail . at least thats what samsung claims
I traded in my s22 for an s24 ultra and got 750$ for the s-22(Canadian dollar). My S-22 was like brand new when I peeled the screen protector and the case. Thanks for the ND filter that I did not know. I bought filter cages and cases from Neweer Cage and Freewell Cases. I like the cage and have the smallrig universal cage, unfortunately, they don't make it for Samsung. I found only Neweer makes cages for Samsung S-24 Ultra and bought their filter sets. Bought a Freewell case and an Anamorphic lens with a filter set. but Freewell lenses don't to other backplates, otherwise bought only one company's products. Thanks for the video. still needs to know this and that.
I hear the new s24 ultra is quite an improvement over the s22 ultra. I'm on the fence about getting the new one. Another great video, and I'm jealous of the 60-degree temperature. It's been below zero for a few days around here. Wind chills between -25 to -40 below. Can't wait to see a video with Brittany's new phone.
I'm seeing on X and YT that the camera is not much of an improvement and it's got some issues. It's got overexposure and highlight issues + worse telephoto. Imo camera system doesn't perform as good as iPhone 15pm or pixel.
@@Jsanon00I own both, s24 does night and videography better. But s22 has better light management and better zoom shots. All of the ai updates are coming to the 22 ultra anyways
Did you check whether the changes you previously mentioned to the way it handles dng files were reverted back? ie. Could you de-noise raw files in lightroom again?
No, this is the first time I've bothered to open up expert raw since that last time I tried the astro stuff. I'll try it again for S24U videos when I get it.
since you take photos in raw, how often do you have to clear photos off your phone to make more room? I have an older phone (so less storage) but my phone is almost full and I can't take anything else off it to get it smaller but I still have a micro sd so I store photos on that; however, when I do pro mode it uses up that memory way faster. It seems like as the years go on, the apps just get bigger and so do the photos and they make you pay a ton for more storage b/c they took away the cheap option of a micro sd card. I'll be interested in your S24 Ultra reviews b/c i really need a new phone...just not sure I'll stick with Samsung or not :)
I actually don't usually do any real photography with my phone, other than normal personal/family pics and IG stories, etc., since I pretty much always have one of my mirrorless cameras with me. The only time I use Pro Mode and keep the RAW images is when I'm doing a video for RUclips, otherwise I just use the regular mode. I do take all the images off my phone at least once a year and put them on my PC or backup hard drive for storage, so I've never had any space issues with phone images.
Hi Brent I'm having some issues with pro mode on my S23U It's over exposing the sky and blowing it all out making the image unusable. Normal mode no problem Should I be using expert raw and the ND filter function?
Sounds like it's just a high dynamic range scene, which most cameras struggle with unless they have built in HDR mode, like the normal mode on phones. Pro mode doesn't have an HDR feature for the raw part, only the jpeg processing. So you either need to just use the normal mode or learn how to exposure bracket with pro mode and blend them together in post.
what i want to know is... how does it compare to the long exposure modes on phones like the xiaomi, honor and huawei? I know on those phones its much easier to just set and forget, but i wonder what the difference in picture quality is
S23 has also looking exposure but as you can see this is king exposure without picture coming out to bright. If you normal long exposure the picture will come out very bright
I have the s22 ultra. Bummer that I don't have this feature. Maybe an upgrade down the road. Pretty sweet what this series of galaxies do. Hey I have an off subject of video question. I want to ask someone that o look up to as a wildlife photographer and who already either owns or has used the r6 mk.2 and the r5. I love my r6mk2 and shoot wildlife mostly predator birds. My question I have been always thinking I should have got the r5. So if your out on a late day getting say an eagle at around 50 to 75 yards lense might be the 100 to 500 or whatever. Light is perfect and you get your shot. Am I going to look at the picture and be like oh my gosh the r5 just blows away the r6mk2. Is there that big of a difference in image quality? I understand the cropping benefit. I really think the r6 mk.2 does fine. Just wanted your opinion. No hurry. Thanks Brent
IMHO, the R5 certainly doesn't blow the R6II away for IQ, but the extra res for cropping is nice. That's about it. Otherwise the R6II is way better for AF than the R5.
@BrentHall thanks so much for getting back with me. I think I'm just going to hang on to my r6 mk.2 and grab that rf 200mm to 800mm asap. I really want to start working with my galaxy S22 ultra. It blows me away the images you get with these galaxies S- series.
I was so excited for the electronic nd until you said you cant use it for video. Haha. 5 yrs ago, i bought Moment lens for my s10 + after your video. Im finally upgrading to s24 ultra, but i cant use my old moment lenses. I think i will get the freewell lenses. Do you have an affiliate link for freewell? Thanks always for your videos.
Sorry, I got way behind on comments. Yeah the old moment lenses won't do so well on the new phones, but they have new ones now (I haven't tried them) and I also do have the freewell stuff linked in the video description.
In the beginning you looked like a grown adult heading to 5th grade math class with the backpack so high on your back LMAO. Love ya brother. Great video. I'm picking up a used s23 ulta for some landscapes. The 24 I believe is about to be released too.
🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, that's how I felt, lol. And yeah, the S24 should be out by the 1st. I pre-ordered one for camera lady cause it's her turn for the upgrade, so we should have in a week or so, hopefully.
It might be too late but Samsung offers some seriously good deals on their new phones if you 'preorder' before the release. Most of the value comes from the trade-in values. What I'll say about this video is those of us without the special case and filters will need to keep a close eye on the retail costs as no doubt they'll do a bit of price cutting once the 24 stuff is out there. Hopefully 🙂
Wonderful explanation, brother. really helped us a lot. Kindly make a short video so that you can improve your followers & subscribers; make some more videos
F social media the pics are for you not for other people you hace the best phone on usa people waist there money on trash apple and it breaks real eazy you cant charge it with another charger thats is not his you cant use other ears buds or the watch to work good you have to get there things and there things dont work on other phones so why spend money on trash that only works with there stuff😂😂😂😂😂😂
They said the best camera gear is that you always have with you, but.. Im an oldtimer coming from SLRs to DSLRs to mirrorless cameras, and for me a phone is not a camera I want to use. Its just a phone, doing what a phone tradicionally are supposed to do. ;-)
Another "old timer" chiming in... I do a lot of adventure motorcycle riding and simply got tired of hauling around a camera bag with the body and related gear. I used to shoot a Nikon Z5 and to save having to haul extra lenses, I got an 18-300 Nikkor "walk-around" lens. Even then, with extra batts, filters, an adequate tripod, etc., still too much gear to comfortably haul around, especially on longer trips. I had an Samsung S22U and recently updated to an S24U. Now, true, the phone camera will NOT take the same quality photos that a DSLR or a mirrorless will...to claim otherwise would be a bald-faced lie! However, recognizing (and accepting ) some of the limitations with the phone camera, I'm quite happy with about 90% of the shots I take with the phone. MUCH more portable, I already have it with me anyway and I've also "accessorized". I'm using a Shiftcam ProGrip which makes the phone more manageable in my large hands. I also got the actual Samsung filter mount and use a dual-purpose 72mm 1-5 stop variable ND and CPL filter. Haven't tried the ExpertRAW bulit-in ND filter yet (wasn't available in ExpertRAW for the S22U but is for the S24U), so we shall see. Do I miss my mirrorless? Of COURSE I do! But, instead of throwing up my hands and just commiting scenes to my memory, I've simply adapted and still enjoying taking and looking at some great shots... Another excellent video, Brent...good to see you! 🥳

Hey i really dont have much money to buy all these fancy lenses. Could i take my polarized sunglasses and use them as a mock lense?
S24 has the ND filter feature as well. Pretty cool although the optival has dropped to 5x (although they show 10x)

Will be trying the ND filter function when my S24 Ultra arrives, thanks for showing how it works and how it's different from real ones!

hey where is this catwalk/hike/waterfall? the wife and I are traveling this year and this looks like a good place to visit. Ron-North Carolina
It's near Glenwood, NM. It's a national monument, so you can google it and check their website on it.
Thank you!

the built in ND filter forces the megapixels down to 12
Oh thats cool!
This was release a month or so ago in canada
Yeah, I feel like it probably came out around the same time here in the US, but I just noticed it last week or so and figured I'd mess with it.
But they didn't RAW yet.

Yeah. I pre-ordered it for camera lady. Hopefully we'll get around the 1st or so.
There are 100's third party apps that do the same thing. Huawei phones have had this since 2019 under the name Silky Water Photo Mode.
amazing story bro. your mom told me dinner is rdy for you!
Right but who wants Huawei phones. I don't want China stealing my data.
