I think the eventual next step for me is the Leica SL or GFX system. I really enjoy the SL and how it renders with vintage lens. That said I’m on the fuji XH1 for now it seems everyone forgot about it when all the new bodies dropped. I don’t need a flip screen so I save on the xt4 and the ibis is great for keeping iso low.
When I was still shooting food for a living I had nearly the same setup, but with LF lenses. Two thing could improve your setup a lot: Add the long Cambo rail, as you get an additional place to mount a compendium or small flags, which help a lot taming those internal reflections which seem to come out of nowhere Add a geared tripod head, this helps a lot to counteract the framing shift when tilting the front element. All that said, after a couple of years I went back to Canon TSE's with a Fuji GFX, which were easier to use, faster to set up and could even be used handheld.
Back in the film days I had an Arca Swiss 6x9 with orbix tilt, self locking nobs. A technical master piece, I loved it but I moved to digital and use Canon TS E lenses with R5. I was thinking of your solution and the reason I didn’t buy at the time was the digital sensor is far into the camera chamber that the chambers opening will shadow the sensor. I guess less with tele photo lenses you use. But would it not to make sense for you to have a mirrorless with the sensor close to the chamber opening - more freedom of lens movements?
I was very lucky to get from a friend a Sinar P3 with a 75H back for playing around, but using liveview with this back isn’t very comfortable. So I bought two adapter plates for the P3 frames for attaching a Nikon Z6 and Mamiya RZ lenses… My setup looks similar to yours just instead the cambo part it is a Sinar. I call my setup 7-decade camera because built with parts from 7 decades… ok almost the Sinar rod is from a Norma… it underlines how it isn’t necessary to buy always new. I have fun! Do you know that Novoflex and Hartblei have a special clamp for RZ lenses to keep the aperture switch open? Thanks for your videos! Greetings from Switzerland
@@Marvosvids Yes, they are very expensive but well built! It is basically a lens board for fitting Novoflex's BALPRO adapters. Because Novoflex offers also a BALPRO Adapter for their A-mount almost every camera since the 70ies is mountable... You need this special Sinar lens board and the Novoflex adapter set for making it work. My adapter are for the P3 frame which is smaller than the P2. I don't know if they have it also for the P2. Otherwise you need the P3 frames... Sinar lens board was 340€, Novoflex adapter set other 135€ and you can mount a Nikon Z as a digitalback... if you want also a RZ lens then an other 340€ plus the Novoflex adapter was 185€... = 1000€ ONLY for adapters for a Nikon Z with a Mamiya RZ lens on a Sinar P3 A used Sinar P3 cost almost the same without lens a digitalback...

Q: Is the 35mm sensor really large enough for the Scheimpflug principle to give any meaningful results? I understand that one would need a lens that projects a large enough circle of confusion to cover all of the swings and tilts and rises. This was easy when I was shooting with my Sinar P2 4x5. I just wasn't sure if this setup would work with 35mm.
Schempflug works whatever sensor size to my understanding. Yes the projected lens diameter must be large enough so one can move the “sensor” within it. Film is less prone to show CA when swinging and tilting because of the large format and digital sensors so small show every flaw of the lens. And sensors or some of them are more sensitive to angular light like swinging it renders huge color shifts. Canon and Nikon makes TS lenses so they must have taken that into consideration when constructing their sensors. What about Sony and Panasonic can they take the strong angular lights hitting the sensor?? Medium format sensors had problems in the past I don’t know how that is today…
great set up. I want to upgrade my canon c100ii but not sure yet what to get for video. For photo, Im happy with my nikons for now. I also have on old phase one but not a cool set up like that.
I was intrigued by your earlier video on the Cambo Actus and looked for a cheaper more portable (albeit more limited) alternative. A a result I have just purchased a Fotodiox tilt shift adapter which allows me to attach a Nikon G lens to my MFT Lumix G9. To go with this I also purchased a nikon fit Zeiss distagon 21mm lens. As this lens throws a larger image circle than the MFT sensor I gain some of the benefits you see with the Mamiya lens on the Cannon full frame sensor. I have not had much oportunity to use it yet but initial results are promising. The adapter cost me £225 and the like new zeiss lens from MPB was £375 i.e. together they cost less than I would have to pay for a new top quality MFT prime lens.
I do not understand why you are using the depth of field preview lever with the yellow band. It's much easier to just put the lens on T mode and uncock the shutter, you can then use the aperture ring without ever touching the DOF preview lever. It works great with all RZ lenses on the Actus, even with RB K/L lenses. It is easier on the shutter as the lens will be uncocked (and also on the return spring of the DOF lever). Cambo also recommand this with the RZ plate.
Hello, I would like to buy this exact set up, is there a list of the different items I would need? Also, can you recommend where to purchase? Thank you.
yeah, looking forward to seeing the "big rig", hope it is an ultima, or actus MV or xl as that would look cool as well as have enormous usability, as the movement ranges are bigger, as the 'standard carrier' is bigger, has gearing, and also these models have compendium shade options, as well as the capacity to take leaf shuttered lenses, so can sync flash at any speed.
I just purchased a Used (4850 Shutter Count) Fuji GFX100s, GF23mm f4, GF110mm f2, and a GF45-100 f4 and my total investment so far is $9,750.00 US. There are a lot of other used GFX Sytems out there if that's what your seeking. Fuji has made MFormat more affordable, that's for sure. I would love to get a Cambo Actus system, but that will have to wait a little while. I would like to eliminate Focus-Stacking if possible?
Fuji is bringing a couple of shift-tilt lenses and there are third party PC lenses available. However, something like Cambo Actus, Arca-Swiss, Toyo, or Sinar p2/ 3 would be way better. I wish I had the funds to buy a GFX or any medium format, sigh. But, I still love the X-T3.
Hey Scott, I shoot Sony FF, mostly with a 90mm MACRO lense. Should I buy this Cambo contraption, can I still use the same lense or do I need a lense made for large format ?
Fascinating piece of equipment! The perfect tool for the job. I'm learning to use an MPP Micro-Technical 4x5 film camera with similar movements. It's a learning curve for sure but enjoyable. I'm an amateur photographer but learn a lot from your channel. Thank you.
At my job, I mostly shoot sports and people photos that don't require high resolution, and for that, I use my R3 or whatever body I have lying around my desk, R6, 6dii, etc. However, when I need high resolution for something like copy work, I have a 5dsr which I purchased, in part, based on your recommendation. What a bargain the 5dsr is, and the images are brilliant.
Nice.. the most interesting video you have made... enjoyed every minute of it 😊 Now Im just looking forward to a behind the scenes video where you show how you use it
I have your Cambo's granddad here (Ultima). Can still put my old 5D MK2 on the back, but at the moment it's not compatible with my workhorses. Loved working with that thing, but as I now focus completely on dance and portraits, it's not getting any use. Miss it a bit, if I'm honest...
Hi Scott, can you give me the name of your patron that did the yellow thing emoji and your lens, I verified on Etsy and there's nothing there. I did not find that yellow thing. I am actively searching for this. Can you help?
As Theodor Scheimpflug (after whom the Scheimpflug principle was named) lived in Austria, for an English speaker his name would have to be pronounced like "shime-fluke", where "shime" would be like a mix of "shine" and "chime" to sound correctly in German language... ;-)
Today's lighting setup matches your style better! Nicely done! Every video about gear will increase amount of your subscribers.. I use old cambo 4x5 field camera with full frame on back and schneider lens on front plate, limited movements by its size setup but works for me.
My main kit is Canon EOS R and TSE 45mm (bought based on your previous videos...haha). The TSE has been an amazing lens and helped me avoid photostacking in many situations. Definitely one of the best recommendations from you by far. The new TSE 90mm macro would be a nice addition but for now for now my 100mm L has been a good working lens as well. For clients that want more resolution, the 5DSR has been awesome. I just need to learn to adjust to no focus peaking...haha..I may need an external monitor to help.
Hi Scott, really enjoy all your videos. You're doing a damn good job that being said I'm in the process of buying that kit and that yellow thing on your lens seems very handy. Can you give me the name of your friend? I could send him a email and he could tell me how much she's going to charge me. Have a good day, my friend keep up the good work. I'll be watching.
TS lenses are close, but only allow lens movements, whereas a view camera allows rear standard movements which he points out a few times. The best choice for studio work.
Similar, but with some limitations. For example: a tse lens on a dslr cannot tilt and swing at the same time. You also cannot rise or fall the camera, only the lens.
You cannot get tilt and swing at the same time. Full technical cameras have image plane fully moving similar to lens plane. Tilt shift lenses have so much limitations that you can use it for specific purpose on specific shoot. Cannot do everything you want.
People will jump on to buy something like this. The mistake is that they think the kit will allow them to do, instead for you, the kit made your work...BETTER.
What’s your next camera purchase ?
I’m looking at getting a c70 for my video work, but I do also need a new macro lens! What about you?
Sinar P3, Cambo Actus MV or Cambo Actus XL. I have the Cambo WRS-5000 and it’s awesome, but not in the studio unfortunately.
