  • Home exercises to relieve shoulder pain, eliminate shoulder impingement, and heal your rotator cuff tendonitis! The key is treating two critical areas that are likely causing your impingement - improving your shoulder posture and strengthening your rotator cuff. This combination has been proven to decrease common rotator cuff tendonitis pain and improve function.

    =============================
The most-common type of shoulder pain I encounter as a physical therapist is “shoulder impingement” or “rotator cuff tendonitis”.
Most “day-to-day” shoulder pain starts out as this irritation which then progresses to more pain if left untreated.
It’s important that you catch it early and intervene with the right exercises to eliminate pain and improve your shoulder function right away!
WHAT IS ROTATOR CUFF SHOULDER PAIN
The majority of rotator cuff injuries happen to the “supraspinatus” tendon. This is because of its anatomical location and arrangement.
This tendon sits right underneath the AC joint “roof” and right on top of the humeral head. As the shoulder ball moves in the shoulder socket, this tendon can get “pinched” causing irritation, inflammation, and pain.
This is rarely a “one time” incident. This is an overuse injury that occurs with time and repeated faulty motion. It starts as slight pain every now and then and can progress to more intense pain most of the time.
HOW TO TREAT ROTATOR CUFF SHOULDER PAIN
There are two important anatomical structures that contribute to shoulder impingement: the AC joint (or “roof” over the shoulder) and the humeral head (the “ball” of the “ball and socket” joint).
We can alleviate rotator cuff impingement and tendonitis by improving the position of the AC joint with postural corrections and improving the function of the humeral head by strengthening the rotator cuff.

I began feeling pain in my right rotator cuff and began doing these exercises. After one week, my rotator cuff pain was GONE!! Despite undergoing 12 sessions of physiotherapy, the exact reason for the pain remains unidentified. Interestingly, I don't experience any pain when I rotate or lift my arm. Feel like i have some sort of impingement. When resisting internal rotation, I immediately feel that exact pain in the front of shoulder. Whether my arm is at my side like that exercise at 10:15 or if arm up at 90 degrees and I resist internal rotation as well. Any clue what im dealing with, and if the fix is to slowly do internal rotation exercises? I feel i have done external stuff forever with no fix

Excellent video! I've had severe pain for over 1 year. I wasn't able to lift my arm for more than 45 degrees. The first exercise was extremely painful for me; however, I felt no pain in my shoulder afterwards for a little while. I plan to do these stretches daily to finally get rid of this issue. THANK YOU!!

If certain lifts I do at the gym don’t cause pain is it alright to continue to do them?
For example, flat db bench does not cause pain… but if I evaluate the angle into inclined or shoulder press it would be uncomfortable.

From these exercises I am sure that the pain I am experiencing is exactly in the tendon in front of the shoulder near the arm pit but not really sure that is it due to impingement or not. I caused this pain from swinging on a monkey bar and other day took shoulder rolls on hard ground.

    Hi Doc,
I've been having shoulder pain in my left shoulder for a little while and have been doing the exercises you and others have suggested with some results.
However, lifting my arm straight up over my head would still bring on some pain that causes me to wince.
Now check this out, I've decided to grab the top of a door with my left hand and allow the weight of my body to drop toward the floor to stretch the shoulder.
To my surprise, it gave me instant albeit temporary relief. I repeated this exercise a couple more times within the space of 5 minutes and now I can lift my arm straight up over my head with very little pain but my lateral movement became just a little strain but not much.
So now I am wondering if I should continue to do such an exercise or am I risking injuring myself further?
It's a bit confusing for me because I have not heard/read anyone on RUclips say anything about doing or not doing such a thing and yet I have not had such relief since I have been doing these exercises for over a month now (2-17-2023).
I would appreciate your insight or comments.
    Thank you!

If you have unilateral, right-sided shoulder pain that seemed to have no cause and it extends up to the neck, jaw, and cranium and sometimes even down the arm and hand, you might want to have your gallbladder function checked as it's often the most likely culprit for right-side shoulder and neck pain and stiffness.

Hi Jared! I’m so glad I found you and this video. I’ve been suffering with a left shoulder impingement for what seems like a couple months now. I finally went into the Dr and yes!! That is what I have.. I workout, play soccer and have a pretty demanding job so this impingement has really sidelined me. I have days that I honestly can’t get my arm to touch the top of my head or tie my shoes. I’ve started to try these exercises and my question to you and the other followers is, what level of pain should I expect with exercises? How do I know if it’s safe? I’ll work through the worst pain ever if I thought it was going to help. Thanks again!! Love the videos and will be recommending them to my fellow soccer friends.

I'm working out, and I "Do my best, and forget the rest". IYKYK. When I do shoulder exercises, I am using lighter weights, as I still want to workout my entire body....but should I?
More specifically, do you recommend I go through these exercises for a few weeks before resuming shoulder workouts? Or if I'm feeling okay, and getting enough rest, is it okay to do the impingement exercises, and continue working out the affected muscle - which is my right shoulder.

Hey, I have a question, cuz I'm not sure about this I get a lot of arm muscle cramps, Spasms, or something. It happens way a lot when swimming, or putting some force anywhere but I'm not sure about what it feels like cuz for me whenever that thing happens my hands are always in a lift position and it feels as if something moved feels like I got sprained but only it comes back to the old position, and long as I can feel the pain I won't be able to put my arm down. The question is it just normal muscle cramps or something? Earlier it happened again when I tried to do a back squat with a lift, like I hadn't even started yet but it already cramps, and had to wait for few a sec til I could put my arm down. Please someone answer who also experiencing this same thing.
