Exercises for a rotator cuff tear to help you recover quickly

  • A rotator cuff tear is a partial or complete tear of one or more of the four rotator cuff tendons. Rotator cuff injuries typically affect adults. People in their thirties and early forties rarely have a full-thickness tear without a significant traumatic event, such as a fall. Adults in their fifties and beyond can develop full-thickness rotator cuff tears without a major injury. A partial-thickness tear usually responds to the rehabilitation and nonoperative treatment but occasionally needs surgery. Often doing some exercises for a rotator cuff tear can relieve your pain and allow you to get back to what you love to do.

    A full-thickness tear rarely improves without surgery to repair the tendon. With newer technologies, this surgery can almost always be performed arthroscopically.
    In this video, physical therapist Yves Gege and I show a few exercises for a rotator cuff tear you can do to try to recover, if you have a rotator cuff tear.

      I had surgery in 2007, I had a tear rotator cuff the doctor did the best he could he said it was messed up real bad I have been having trouble with my right arm I would not let him do my left one it's hard for me to reach up with my with my right arm. Will my arm ever get better. I wouldn't let them do my left arm because I can't hardly you either one good. But I will start working on both arm . I pray both get well. I really want the one that the Dr did the surgery on to get better. I am right handed .

    I don't mean to bash the physical therapists. But I was going for rotator cuff therapy years ago. I had to go twice a week. Every time I had to pay $20 co-pay. So $40 dollars a week. And every time, they had me doing the same exercises over and over. Why just not show you what to do the first two visits and then tell you to do the same at home? I stopped going after the first month because I wasn't getting paid much and that extra $160 a month was too much. With that said, kudos for these guys for posting this valuable video for free.

    These motions look best for me. Chronic rotator cuff damage (both shoulders) that I waited seeing a specialist for 8 years after I damaged them loading scaffolding one day. After MRI was told low chance of success since tendons had dried and shrunk back. Wouldn't grow back to the bone after mechanical attachment.
    Well, it's now 7 years later (15 overall). I'm 67 now, and still relatively active around the house. Just can't lift much above shoulder level without high pain reaction.
    Will these exercises help me at all? Or am I just toast? Thanks

      Interesting. I always wondered what happens if you don't get surgery. I didn't know that tendons would "dry and shrink back". Does that mean there's no way to get surgery on this in the future? So you have to get surgery within say a couple months or else it's too late?
      I wonder also if that's the case with ligaments. I also tore my ACL a few years ago. It's fine now but I always wonder if I want to get surgery in the future if it's possible.

    • @nofurtherwest3474
      @nofurtherwest3474 11 месяцев назад

      @TheBigfoot, I wonder if you an build up the other non-injured muscles around there and see if you basically change your bio mechanics to get the same motions but with using different muscles so you're not relying on the injured ones.

      @@nofurtherwest3474my surgeon is the guy that handles all the TCU athletes, very respected doc. He says you have to reconnect the torn and separated tendon to the bone. I had the pain when reaching up to a cabinet shelf. What helped me alot was going to a sports pool where we live. I would wear a snorkel mask so I could keep my head straight. I would do about 50-60 laps extending my arms together then pulling them down in an arc to propel forward. My pain eventually went away and my wife noticed my beefed up shoulder muscles which surprised me.

    Just wanted to say, both of these individuals actually know what they're talking about, since they correctly recognise the rotator cuff/scapular muscles as being fundamental to power and stability generation from the shoulder joint, even though they are smaller and less than muscles like the deltoid. Excellent to watch this and I will be using these exercises for my own RC injury.

I injured my rotator cuff about 6 months ago but just assumed I could continue with my weight routine it would eventually heal. Opps wrong, I made it worse. Being a senior and trying to continue my usual weight routine caused tendonitis and a rotator cuff tear. I can't sleep because of the pain, which limits healing time. Has anybody had cortisone shots for the pain? Is it a good idea?

    This video is a breath of fresh air. I had a motorcycle wreck and tore my rotator and the mri said i had to have surgery with a tonotomy. But the craziest thing is, I don’t feel any severe pain. I feel a little soreness and when I lift my arm it kind of clicks a little bit.. so I postpone surgery and may try to do some things like this video is suggesting and not overdo it. To be honest, having four broken ribs was much worse pain than my rotator cuff tear. But is that normal not to have severe pain when you’ve been diagnosed with the rotator cuff injury? Thanks for the vid

      Hi, I hope you’ll see this. I don’t know if you’re still struggling with it. But try to feel it out, better to start lower and take your time, the bottom line is stay active work around the injury keep running doing abs. Work your back, all of that. If you can do rows try to identify what part of the cuff is weak. as for the raises the best and basic way is 5 rep 3 set if it feels good add a set of reps. Adjust some each week or when you feel stronger but go as slowly as humanly possible

    Very useful video. I had MRI and was diagnosed with a supraspinatus tendinitis and tendinosis with a partial tear. Can I lift weights, in this case for a back muscles, like t bar row or similar? Also I was strengthening trapezius and back deltoids with the weights, am I getting my condition worse with this? Or should I just drop the weights and concentrate on supraspinatus

      I did something similar, continued to do weights after feeling shoulder and arm pain. I'm suffering for it now. Rotator cuff tear and tendinitis. I'm going for physio now. Have you considered cortisone shots? I'm on the fence about having it. Some say it will help with sleep which I get very little of because of the pain.

    • @ivanmisetic3423
      @ivanmisetic3423 Год назад +1

      @@bernice1654 no cortisone shot for sure. It won't cure the problem,it will give you a temporarily relief. Since I posted this comment, I am having a great progress in strength and mobility, pain is still there,but moderate. It will take probably for another 6 months until I recover in full. Most of the exercises I can do without the pain,the push ones( chest workout ) are still having pain 3-4/10. Key is physical therapy and knowledgeable therapist. Mine didn't help me much,I am mostly on my own.

    First of all, the doctor seems like a genuinely good person. That said, it is insane to me, how he wouldn't know these exercises. What is even more insane, is that the doctor looks to be in great shape himself, which I can't see him obtaining the build he has without some of these movements. My only conclusion is that he is pretending to not know for us audience (but that doesn't bode well for confidence in him on our part)... or, who knows. Anyhow, GREAT video from both of you.

Started Phyical therapy 2 weeks after my injury. It took almost 3 months of PT and the clicking and noises is way less than before. Still happens every now and then tho.
      I would start doing these exerises in this video because they are somewhat similar to what I do at PT. Your going to have to strenghen all the muscles in your shoulder someway to help with the pain.
