Hasard, as someone who wanted to but never applied to become a pilot (I wasn’t aware lasik was available amd I’m 34 now, womp), so these vids give me a glimpse into what it’s like. I appreciate you, sir.
Good video Sir. Sounds like we hit some of the same airbases and dealt with some of the same air munitions. I spent 9 years with the "Wolf Pack" both F-4E and F-16 aircraft. When you mentioned Chik-Do that brought a smile to my face. 😎
There are a lot of guys doing what you do on RUclips these days but IMO you do the very best job explaining things to the point where it feels like a shared experience. No mistake that often when you think of the very best this country has to offer your mind goes to USAF pilots. That is not meant in disrespect for other branches or disciplines but rather the highest compliments for people like Hasard
Totally agree with Jacob ! Was just waiting for that smile of confirmation ! Thats what flight simmers strive for an authentic flight experience or as close as possible ! Really enjoyed your review! Thankyou 🤙
Go for it! Be sure to study like insane! You got this! Only the very best goes to the US Air Force Academy (must maintain a 4.0 or greater with AP, and with a high SAT scores). Nearly all fighter pilots study engineering in their undergrad; and to get into engineering requires advanced math; and top of your math classes at that. Only the top of the class among engineers gets to become pilots. The top pilots of that top portion get to become fighter pilots. So don’t waste your youth! These guys went ALL OUT and hit the math books to be considered to be a part of the program!
Thanks for giving your opinion on this module as a former Viper driver. DCS is a great system and with top-end gear (RTX 3090, HP Reverb G2 VR) its really immersive. Subbed to your channel and looking forward to more content from you. ps. thanks USAF for letting your pilots talk with the enthusiast community that support you.
A VR headset paired with any of the DCS modules is truly an awe inspiring experience. You have that sense of scale and distance. And you feel asthough you're in the cockpit.
I love DCS! Even though I have a lot of respect for those in the armed forces, DCS has showed me just how stressful things can get in a cockpit. I'm just lucky that when I get hit I can just respawn. The modelling of the cockpits is 2nd to none and the fact that the Viper module still isn't completed is mind blowing.
Ten minutes of Hasard getting uber-nostalgic. You can tell you were definitely suppressing the urge to start telling sea stories. It's a natural response. Even after you get out, you'll find yourself busting out "Aw man. This one time..." stories regularly, or pointing out to friends when movies/games get things right or wrong. I was an Amphib Raids instructor with Special Operations Training Group in the Marines. The same kind of thing happens with me whenever I come across things having to do with zodiacs (the CRRC, the small inflatable black rubber boats, though we just called them zods), RHIBs, a swimmer team finning up to a beach for reconnaissance, etc., etc. Do yourself a favor and write down your day to day shenanigans. It doesn't have to be super detailed or anything, just a sentence or two. You'll be glad you did later on down the road.
Glad to see that you might be getting into DCS. I have the game myself and play it almost every day. A good thing about DCS is that you don't need a beefy computer to play it
@@handle6547 It depends heavily on what you want to do. A big multiplayer server with ton of AI, assets, Supercarrier and high settings? You need a very good PC. Want to just drop a couple of JDAMs in a single player session on the Caucasus map? You can get away with a pretty weak computer.
Have you considered doing an avionics special using DCS F-16/BMS - where you would walk the viewers through cockpit / MFD setup and the workflow you would use while setting up/searching/designating targets. Basically have a cockpit view and a rolling commentary going.
If you've played Falcon 4.0 before, then you'd be glad to know that its still alive and kicking in the form of a free stand alone mod called Falcon BMS which some still consider to be one of the best if not THE best F-16 sim to date even compared to DCS. It even has a full fledged dynamic campaign system, mutiplayer is also available if you want to do some coop missions or just PVP. You should check it out at least once, if nothing more than to see how much work hardcore fans of the original game have done to get it to what it looks like now. Just need to have falcon 4.0 installed first if you wanna try it cause the BMS installer checks if you actually own the original game before it allows you to proceed with the install, GOG has a drm free version in their store for 9.99. Here's a trailer they made for Falcon BMS version 4.35 ruclips.net/video/IWpqpVZtGkk/видео.html
@Hasard Lee your reaction to the video was Amazing to watch. Seeing your face light up the way it did was awesome. I hope the Sim despite it's flaws and the fact that the F-16 Module is not fully finished yet, still proves impressive and fun. I'm sure it will. the video didn't really show it but they have High-Off-Boresight (HOB) with the Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) with AIM-9X's as well as GBU's, CBU's, they have JADM's but not on the F-16 yet, and the older fashioned Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive (SAPHE) rounds for the Viper too. I understand why we don't generally use them today, as the HEI-T rounds auto-detonate after 1 kilometer to prevent unintended casualties or something but yeah. I'm curious if you've fired an AIM-9X in training or anything before to test HOB, I know in the sim they can pull absolutely insane maneuvers for the first few seconds of their flight until they reach their max velocity. Watching the missile fire and then pull a U-turn over the wing to hit someone that flew by is really nuts. though you can't target them from that far behind you in the Viper, the delay between lock and firing makes that happen. the delay is simulated well too I Think. Very eager to hear your thoughts. I'll happily just fly, do practice missions, A/G, do a BVR-to-Merge fight assuming it gets there and then some dog-fights with you if you want. I'm waiting on a replacement throttle at the moment, but I should have it in a few weeks. if you don't have a HOTAS setup for PC I recommend the Thrust-master T16000M with the pedals for a starter setup ( it's around $300). If money isn't an issue likely the Warthog setup, I believe the A-10 has the same stick as the F-16, just the throttle is different. you might still want the T16000M pedals to go with it though unless you find some good metal ones. Some people might recommend Track-IR for looking around but I use the Hat switch on the top of the stick personally. They do have the actual F-16C Block 50 control setup as well for various HOTAS setups and some other presets.
The landing gear lights used to by round and basicly sealed bulb design like older car headlights now they have been replaced with LED lamps saves power drain on power bank's.
You have to react to Falcon BMS! It is a community modification for the good old Falcon 4.0 with graphical upgrades and a lot of other stuff that is STILL being developed even all of those years later! In terms of faithful implementation of all of the weapon systems modern F-16s can use it's even further ahead than DCS, though the graphics are lacking in comparison.
I second this. If you are looking for a sim that implements a lot of systems/components of the F-16, Falcon BMS is the way to go. It also implements others stuffs outside of the F-16 like ATC, weather, ... F-16 in DCS is nice but it's a bit laking. It's still fun to fly and it starts to have all the fun stuff like the targeting pod.
@@Tigermoto Hi! Patience. BMS Dev are mostly engineers , professional coders (sometimes also amateur) ... but BMS is developed on their free time. No money which is a strong point and a weak point at the same time. Those guys are from aeronautical industry, engineer industry, military, some are actual pilots, F-16 but not only ... some of the lead coders are issued from very prestigious high school like MIT (École polytechnique in France) ... but rare are the guys in BMS team working in the video game industry. This is why BMS lacks in terms of graphics and VR support. It will be done I am sure, but it takes more time. On the other hands, many other areas are much much more advanced than in DCS (weapon, systems, ATC, AIs, weather effects ...). ED are working on those but they have as much effort to bring on those area than BMS on GFX and VR support, in not much more and that cost money for ED. Concerning the F-16, there is no possible arguing, BMS leads by far. Of course, BMS is mostly (is not exclusively) an F-16 sim. DCS is not. DCS is, by the way, certainly the best helicopter sim ever and is almost perfect for this.
@3:25 but at their cores, both the Paveway and JDAM PGMs are just guidance kits for the Mk 80 series bomb cores. The explosive itself has not been updated in over 60 years. On the other hand, since Ed Heinimen’s design works so well, why change a good thing?
If anyone is looking to get into DCS, I would go with a VR headset like the G2 for high resolution. I use to drive Semi's and playing American Truck Simulator in VR actually feels like I am sitting in the truck again. I would say it feels the same as fighter pilot sitting in a fighter. Of course you can not feel the vehicle. Adding a ButtKicker can help with the feeling. I have a ButtKicker 2 and when I am taxiing, with cracks in the pavement, I can actually feel it going over those cracks. When you start to stall you will start to feel the buffeting in the seat even before the stall warning goes off.
I highly doubt he'll agree to go through the trouble of setting it up though... But just in case, here is a software piece that could greatly improve one's experience with Falcon BMS: www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?31774-Falcon-BMS-Alternative-Launcher-(Easy-Setup-Keep-Joystick-Assignments)
Amazing comments there Hasard !!! awesome !!! Hope to see u flying on the DCS Simulator and videos about it !!! There are lots in the development and the F18 being in the pipeline, looks like the Viper is the next one to get ED attention, Can u comment on the energy retention and speed on the DCS F-16c 50 in DCS pls? looks to me that there's a shortcoming there and the speed gain and energy maintenance are not the same, looks like ED needs to update performance in the future in that regard. Another issue there is A2A refueling !!! Keep up the great channel !!!
The trailers are glitzy and all but they simply don't even scratch the surface of all the work that has gone into modeling the functionality of the weapons systems and the cockpit. And while the DCS F-16 is still in active development (not everything is implemented yet), generally speaking the level of quality/detail that goes into DCS modules is insane. I've got the DCS F-14 Tomcat myself and the operation of weapons, aircraft systems, and the AWG-9 radar is just about as close to reality as you can get within the context of the simulator environment. Incredible stuff. At any rate, what I'm saying is I'd love to see you react to a video of somebody actually doing a dogfight or an operation in the Viper so you can see the true allure of the simulation.
1970s F-16A Blocks 1-15 had an analog HUD Control Panel under the HUD. It had dials and knobs similar to the F-15A/C first HUDs. The Up front Control (UFC) was introduced with the Block 25. C/D Models. They tested it at Edwards and GD based on pilot feedback and the direction avionics were going already. DED came with Block 30 if I remember correctly. I don’t remember seeing them on 25s. There were different HUD models in the F-16A/B even before the Block 25 came along. Of course the Block 40 LANTIRN HUD was a totally different affair. If you really want a shock, look at the original YF-16 gunsight panel and cockpit. It had a radar-ranging sight like an F-86, no pulse-doppler radar, . A leftover from the thinking of Boyd and crew, which was really a sad joke if you think about the capabilities even between an F-16A and YF-16. external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn10.picryl.com%2Fphoto%2F1974%2F02%2F27%2Fa-yf-16-aircraft-cockpit-bc6ec7-1600.jpg&f=1&nofb=1
It's really, really, really fun. I bought a gaming rig for this game in July and I've put in almost 140 hours since then. There are a ton of dynamic missions with ground and air targets which are super nice to play with a friend in multiplayer. Me being a swede, I also very much appreciate the AJS-37 Viggen
Still one of the most beautiful fighters they build. In the 90's I did a lot of spotter work at Kleine-Brogel air base, 10w TAC Belgium. Seen 2 F35 overfly at home a half year ago, they sound very different like the F16, they were flying North, so I think it were Dutch jets. And they were in a hurry lol
Good start, but didn’t realize the video was only going to be your reaction to the video. I was really hoping you would comment on the actual gameplay/mechanics/flight model.
DCS is a great sim. I think you'll like it. I think there is a lot you can show as far as realism for a lot of DCS pilots who are looking for that full experience. I hope you find a good group.
Hearing you talk through the Viper is great, Hasard. Between you and CW Lemoine it appears DCS is pretty solid. The F-16 is my favorite USAF jet and it's a blast rolling with it in DCS. It makes it even better to hear that DCS is pretty effective at real-life simulation of weapons, aerodynamics, etc. I appreciate hearing your stories. BTW, I just recently switched to 4K and DCS even more awesome, even on medium graphics settings. I'm looking to get a ThrustMaster HOTAS setup soon.
Two wild-ass guesses about the top secret stuff they're working on: 1) Seems to me current VTOL is unnecessarily complex because it assumes the craft must stay upright. I think VTOL could be accomplished with an aircraft which launches and lands nose-up using computer controlled small rockets and retracting legs like SpaceX. This idea has been tried before, but without modern tech it wasn't practical. This would require special stairs on a carrier, or the seat or "pilot pod" could pivot or even be removed with robotic arms to make entering and exiting easier. This would also save space on a flight deck. How often does a fighter pilot need to enter or exit the aircraft without a ground crew anyway? Heck, eliminate the traditional landing gear entirely if a runway isn't necessary. 2) A stealthy fighter which can optionally fly as a drone, such that the enemy doesn't know which ones have pilots and which don't. One pilot could command a squadron of drones which look identical to his own aircraft, but can pull faster/sharper turns without a human. And all the pilot/seat/eject system space and weight could be used for other things such as fuel. Thoughts? Don't be too tough on me, I don't claim to be an expert.
Fantastic Video. I used to play Flight Sims back in the 90's on my Commodore Amiga 500, F16 Combat Pilot, and Falcon 1, being among my favourites. I kind of dropped off them for years. Now coming back to playing with the Amiga, it has reignited my passion, and hence, I've recently discovered DCS myself. Fantastic to hear the thoughts of a real pilot. F16 is the only aircraft pack I have in mind to buy at the moment. Just waiting for my HOTAS to arrive and then I'll get going. :) Thanks for the detailed video.
The F-16 is such a beauty, I have had multiple chances to see them up close and personal living near Hill Air Force Base in Utah. Sad shes being replaced by the F-35, but, the march of technology is always moving forward. F-16 will remain a favorite forever though.
If you ever decide to try it [DCS World] I _highly_ recommend trying it in VR. Would like to see your reaction to that (along with, I'm sure, a LOT of others). Oh, and you'll need the beefiest PC you can get to run it - that level of detail doesn't come cheap I'm afraid.
Fly in vr. Sure the graphics take a hit but the experience cannot be beat. Pimax 8kx is the best screen when factoring in a wide field of view. But you will need a super fast computer. Like a 3080 3090 video card.
@@Vardeth805 The systems are guesswork, advanced guesswork if you will. I think you will find the DCS cockpit and systems a little better, certainly more realistic but who knows, DCS used guesswork as well but the start up sequence is more realistic in DCS with maybe a little more insight as one of their military contracts was the F16 C, of course the DCS version has had the 'real' guts removed. In short it's all guesswork and neither represent the real world, just their simulated world. But to answer your post, yes indeed, I should not have made that comment as it's only the graphics that's showing it's age and not it's gameplay which remains in advance of DCS.
@@sterben728 I fly both sims regularly and I can assure you that BMS F-16 is much more realistic than DCS’s version. It’s been over 20 years of “guesswork” that’s been developed in collaboration with viper pilots from air forces around the world. I personally know a viper pilot who flys BMS and rates it 98% accurate in its portrayal in BMS. When asked about DCS in comparison, he says there is none. But hey, I’m just a stranger on the Internet. Don’t take my word for it, try it yourself.
Visually speaking, it rocks. But he would "face palm" unfortunately if he would check in more detail avionics, FLCS implemtation and most of the systems. I sad to say that since the EA release, development of the module is cahotic. Teasers are really well made. I wish the same polish on the development itself.
DCS was my first introduction into military aviation and I have been loving it. I'm in high school so I know the Viper is probably going to be phased out but I would love to fly the F-22 or F-35. I really enjoy the aerospace engineering stuff and your channel has been a great inspiration. The Viper really is such a beautiful jet. One quick question if you have time: I've noticed the F-35 has a few more hat switches on the HOTAS than the F-16 and other 4th gen aircraft do. Do these speed up the workflow a lot compared to a 4th gen like the F-16 or is there still a lot of interaction that is needed with the touchscreen?

All moments of you and SPECIALLY your laughs in 1:58 6:49 10:30 shows EXTREME amount of joy, passion, love and experience. Just Love it to see you how you're enjoying seeing it :)
And your moustache! that's more than anything :D
Hasard I know fighter pilots don’t have tear glands, but I thought I saw a little sparkle in your eye...
It was cool watching his face light up as he watched the trailer. I wish I had become a fighter pilot!
I love those occasional slight smiles, you can see there's memories coming back!
Flying an F-16 is my life dream, must have been quite a ride!
Nice video ! Also Falcon4.0 has a further development version ( Falcon BMS ). BMS for now(DX11 upgrades is WIP) is not that eye-candy but featured more accurate flightmodel/real FLCS and more complete avionics system. Worth to have a look :-) !
Thanks for your feedback and sharing, we appreciate it, good to see you smiling as you were watching :)
DCS has some other aircrafts in it maybe you can try playing that
why - i'd rather hear him talk about the viper
he's an expert in it
hopefully he'll fly it and give his reaction to the DCS viper
@@SDsc0rch 100% agree
If he wants to fly the viper he should go to BMS, the DCS F-16 is so undone, jamming isn’t even modeled for its radar in dcs
Totally agree with Jacob ! Was just waiting for that smile of confirmation ! Thats what flight simmers strive for an authentic flight experience or as close as possible ! Really enjoyed your review! Thankyou 🤙
Hey Hasard, I am a 13 year old. I want to become a fighter pilot in the future. I love you DCS video. I would love to see some more in the future.
Follow your dream man.
Same here buddy! Though in my country i cant become a fighter pilot with poor eyesight, so i will have to let go of that dream :(
Same bro
@Rahat Zaman In the US, pilots can fly with poor eyesight. I pray that the rules get changed in my country🙏
Would love to see a follow up of you flying the viper in DCS VR.
Robin Olds the king of usaf mustache! Rip..
I met and talked with Robin at EAA in 95👍 along with Chuck Yeager RIP
Seeing you smile at some of the scenes was really cool, I could tell it was bringing back a lot of memories!
I'm sure a RUclips by the name of Growling Sidewinder would love to take you on.
If you ever get your hands on a Thrustmaster Warthog Hotas we'd love to see you fly in DCS a few times, maybe you could explain some stuff like that
Thanks for giving your opinion on this module as a former Viper driver. DCS is a great system and with top-end gear (RTX 3090, HP Reverb G2 VR) its really immersive. Subbed to your channel and looking forward to more content from you. ps. thanks USAF for letting your pilots talk with the enthusiast community that support you.
Expression on Hasard’s face of joy with the flight scenes is priceless , absolutely amazing
This is awesome hearing your passion talking about this jet. I'd love to get a chance to do some BFM with you one day!
Waddup Loco ! Nice grill you got there
A VR headset paired with any of the DCS modules is truly an awe inspiring experience.
A good thing about DCS is that you don't need a beefy computer to play it
@@handle6547 true, I've been getting decent frame rate at medium-low settings and I'm happy with that right now. It's just personal preference I guess
Here's a trailer they made for Falcon BMS version 4.35
ruclips.net/video/IWpqpVZtGkk/видео.html
Check out falcon BMS. It’s solely based around the F-16 and has been around much longer
But no VR. (yet anyway) It is hard to go back to a monitor after seeing the view from a bubble canopy in VR. :)
Just showed us the pure joy of a fighter pilot. Salute
6:49 Nostalgic moment kicks in as he cracks a smile
Can't wait to see you get into DCS. Always great seeing first hand experience at work in any mil sim!
I'd like to hear your review of the flight model. C W Lemoine put up video flying it, having flown vipers previously.
I was ATC at Shaw from 98 - 05! Nice seeing a video from someone from the old stomping grounds. :)
I got goosebumps! DCS is fantastic, and ED is a great company that work very hard
Hasard vs mover. We need this.
Im already hyped
+1 to see you flying the Viper in DCS !
amazing simulator.
6:38 Are those mirrors inside the landing gear cover? What are those used for?
They’re lights
Like fighter pilots, landing gear are incredibly vain and have to freshen up before they make their next public appearance on landing...
ldg lights
@@adflights7860 Thanks. That makes sense, They looked like mirrors.
If only it supported VR
@@Dee-Jay That was an incredible response to something I'd completely forgotten I'd written. I agree.
Pretty cool you mentioned Shaw. I’m a controller at cae and I’m good friends with a pilot who used to fly f16s out there.
you should officially challenge C.W. Lemoine navy vs air force or some shenanigans like that
C.W. Lemoine is USAF and flies the T-38. He also flew the F16 and the F18. I think that would be a nice challenge.
@@jonathan9571 He's been USAF F18? Thought he was with the Navy when flying the 18
@@Brooks__EU He was in the USN and flew the F18, then went to USAF and flew F16 and now T38s
You should check out the A10C in DCS. Its really amazing, especially with the scorpion HMCS and the Brrrrttt.
1.44 in, subbed. Thank you for your service, Sir. (Salute)
10:29 Growling Sidewinder? Really good and experienced DCS player.
I love the smile he cracks, you can tell he has some gpod memories flying rhat jet
For comparison, please check out Falcon BMS.
He just said it himself that he used to play falcon 4.0....
@@gotanon8958 Falcon 4.0 and Falcon BMS are like LOMAC and DCS.
Hasard, you should get in contact with C.W. Lemoine, he does a lot of DCS stuff and is also a prior Viper pilot
Actually f18 not an f16 pilot
@@bluecheese5489 He flew the F-16 for the majority of his career with a shorter stint flying the F/A-18
There needs to be a collab with GS (Growling Sidewinder), who has already flown against a real-life Rafale pilot.

Hi there can you tell me what you think of the MMC? I work on the program that designs and builds it.
6:49... that smile, like if you were there again...
@3:23 You could potentially be suggesting the missiles you are used to are higher aspect and lower smoke trail.
It's really, really, really fun. I bought a gaming rig for this game in July and I've put in almost 140 hours since then. There are a ton of dynamic missions with ground and air targets which are super nice to play with a friend in multiplayer. Me being a swede, I also very much appreciate the AJS-37 Viggen
you should definitely play DCS. I bet you'll have no trouble flying the viper.
I hope you find a good group.
wow that all looked way to real!😳 insane!
Can you do some videos where you play DCS?
Two wild-ass guesses about the top secret stuff they're working on:
1) Seems to me current VTOL is unnecessarily complex because it assumes the craft must stay upright.
I really hope that they make a module for the Jas-39 Gripen (Griffen). I'm from Sweden so that would be really cool.
I don't own the F-16 (older aircraft are more my thing in DCS), but yeah, the game is a lot of fun to play. Particularly with neat toys like VR.
Yes we need to see more real pilots using DCS world in VR!
The smile on your face says it all man
The F-16 is such a beauty, I have had multiple chances to see them up close and personal living near Hill Air Force Base in Utah. Sad shes being replaced by the F-35, but, the march of technology is always moving forward. F-16 will remain a favorite forever though.
have you never heard of DCS before? insanely authentic flight sim platform.
That's what I hear. I'm looking for a used VR setup that's already been tuned. I don't need great graphics, just a platform I can fight well with
Fly in vr. Sure the graphics take a hit but the experience cannot be beat. Pimax 8kx is the best screen when factoring in a wide field of view. But you will need a super fast computer. Like a 3080 3090 video card.
Do a reaction to Falcon BMS!
Why, it's obsolete, move with the times bro !!
@@sterben728 it’s hardly obsolete. The systems are more advanced than any other F-16 flight sim available to the civilian world.
@@Vardeth805 In your opinion you forgot to say, lets leave it now !!
His smile at 6:48 says it all
Visually speaking, it rocks. But he would "face palm" unfortunately if he would check in more detail avionics, FLCS implemtation and most of the systems. I sad to say that since the EA release, development of the module is cahotic. Teasers are really well made. I wish the same polish on the development itself.
Saw the little smile come out ast 6:46 :)
The fur is on the seat because all falcon pilots shave their balls.
One quick question if you have time:
I've noticed the F-35 has a few more hat switches on the HOTAS than the F-16 and other 4th gen aircraft do. Do these speed up the workflow a lot compared to a 4th gen like the F-16 or is there still a lot of interaction that is needed with the touchscreen?
