    As a civilian, I flew in a F-16 belonging to the 79th FS, tail 91-468, a Block 50, out of Shaw AFB, back in 1999. We did a Maximum Performance Departure to 15,000 feet with an Immelmann. Went off the coast an went supersonic, low and fast, some BCM's, a touch and go at Joint Base Charleston and then back to Shaw. But now with better than an hour in the cockpit, it was this overhead break that was really intriguing. While I was aware of the G-suit pumping routinely, I guess I really felt it when preforming the break. Thanks for the tutorial, and yes, I enjoyed my ride, it was great.

      Thanks, I was an economic developer for the State of SC. The former base commander for Shaw AFB was the county economic developer. He cut a deal with Shaw that if a project manager hit certain goal metrics, they would get a ride. I hit those metrics and sure enough, they honored the ride. I had to train for it on the day before. Still love everything about it.@@ArthurSwails

I'm not flying the F-16 at the moment (instead I'm currently with the Mi-8), but saved this video on my F-16 playlist, to study it when I do return to the Viper.     This is my most comprehensive F-16 overhead landing. rich info plus nice commentary. I've been watching many overhead landing tutorials. yours is the best. I practice by your guide and it keep getting better and neater on my every landing.

    Seems lika a quality tutorial, even refering to what the books say. Good one on clarifying the use of speedbrake (and why). Some of the other youtubers do several mistakes on the overhead break but this one nails it.

    Thanks Tricker, another great video. Realy nice to have you as my Viper instructor. This one is harder to do then the ILS though. I keep un ending up overshooting the runway centre line on final. It seems that you have to pull some G's turning final, but that feels very unsafe, being in a turn so close to the ground.

      Haha yah you do, gotta keep that 11 degrees aoa and pull in order to make that base to final perfect. I should have mentioned that but you are exactly correct.

    I’m gonna try to do better to hit those speeds and distances just to improve it. That was a great tip by Wags - I’ll have to remember that. Easier than looking at the HUD lines/gun cross. Great video.

    Great tutorial. ~Very clear. Just a small comment about the turn to downwind. Trying to maintain a 'g' turn level and a fixed AOB is a bit confusing, cause they 'fight against each other' if staying level. I just keep the FPM on the horizon, and pull the 2.5-3g. (this is much easier to monitor in the hud than the AOB).The AOB will fall out of this. Can't forget to drop the nose a couple of degrees when rolling into the turn, so when you pull for the g's, you pull the FPM onto the horizontal pitch line. The g's will fall away towards downwind rollout, so you got to let the stick go a little to keep above 200knots. My 0.02$.

    Lots of good info for a upcoming channel. Seems like you're a real pilot too or knowledgable with it as you know how to read the charts.
    With that my 2 cents that other channels seem to skip is explain the little things you arn't thinking of but new flyers might be. Like if your high on final a quick ref is the dashed 3 degree line and you can place the FPM below it to lower it until it reaches the threshold then adjust. Or that the break doesn't have to be above the numbers, depends on the situation and SQ. Just the little things to expand that would help people who don't know.

    Great tutorial, very concise and helpful. There is just one thing I don't fully understand: when do you pop the speedbrakes? The NATOPS says by the time you turn on final they must be out, but when do pilots usually open them? In the Navy you do that as you break, but I guess here you open them when you drop the gear? Just a guess, I wouldn't want to change the jet aerodynamically too much when I'm in a steep turn close to the ground. So what's the word on this? Thanks in advance!

      The man, the myth, the legend is here!? Personally I drop them when on downwind and then raise them in the base turn so there’s not a huge power increase in the turn. When rolling out on final i deploy them again

    Fun fact I learned about Nellis, the procedure there specifically is to break right when coming in on 21 right and left, as if you break left that'll put you flying directly over the live ammo storage and mounting area, an obvious safety concern.

    That tip by Wags at 8:00 is interesting, but it doesn't work so well in VR because your focus is different when looking through the HUD so the AOA indicator has double vision :)

    Just started DCS, I have my speed break keybind to a wheel on my x52 throttle, It's a little hard to reach and I have to turn it like 12 times rapidly to get the speed breaks fully extended, do you have them keybound to fully extend with a push of the button?

      I have a warthog stick and I “hold” a button on my Hotas that sends a command to extend, I can control how much speed brake I want though with how long I hold the switch

    Outstanding. Helped me a lot. The Viper isnt anything as easy as say the Hornet to land. That narrow gear takes some knowledge and practice. Once learned, its easy.

    Tricker, after gear is down you move the stick only sideways and control pitch with throttle? Or you still pitch the aircraft with the stick?

      They work hand in hand, I use a lot of throttle due to the increased drag from the gear and speed brakes. Really need to use both to correct issues

    Hello mate, probably the best one out there. I am new to DCS and started off with the viper, I just cannot get the final turn to the runway right consistently. Could you tell me if it is stick for fpm and throttle for aoa? Or is it a little bit of both to get 5-8 degrees pitch down with 11 aoa?

      They both work hand in hand. That final turn can be hard at first if starting out. Try making a wider downwind until you get the hang of the turn. Just takes practice!

    Nice video! One thing that wasn’t clear is your method for moving the flight path marker up to the 2.5-degree line on final. I presume you used throttle but it might bear some explanation that more throttle raises the FPM, less throttle lowers it. Thanks!

      Good tip! Yah that was exactly it, you can hear the engine noises pretty good with me going up and down on the throttle but I didn't mention it.

    Question/Observation: Can't the air brakes extend more fully once you touch down and the aircraft detects proper ground pressure on the landing gear? I feel like I read about this somewhere... not sure...? If so, is this worth doing as well?

      Yep when the nose wheel touches down you may extend the speed brakes to full.

    coming from only 75 hours in the Hornet - can you explain more about controlling the AoA - use throttle, not pitch and/or stick?

      They work and in hand and it will come with practice. Don't try to trim like the hornet, I'm using the throttle more than anything during these manuavers

    The downwind leg was about 10 degrees short of the reciprocal for the runway, was that intentional, is that how it's done in the USAF, to open out the turn to final?

      030 would be the correct heading but I usually give myself a little extra room for base.

      Just from experience, you can pull about 3gs at 350-400 knots and end up in the right spot everytime

    My biggest issue with using the overhead break is knowing when to roll out of the break. I can never get it right. I'll roll out and look out the canopy and the runway is nowhere to be seen.

    Brilliant tutorial. I’ve just got into simming and have been trying to learn the basics with MSFS. I’m desperate to get into DCS but I’m a tad scared of the learning curve. If I bought myself the f-16 (has to be that as I’ve loved the viper since I was little) can I just practice all of this on my own without getting in the way of others?

      I might just down load it and have a look. I love MSFS because it looks amazing but I’ve been dying to get into this for years. I only have the thrust master t16000 set with rudders. Will that be good enough to start with? Sorry for the questions! Thanks for getting back though

    how much of the initial airbrake extension should you use? Every video I watch calls for extending airbrakes on downwind or base and then extending again on short final.

      On downwind I use them all to slow, in the base turn I retract them to help me turn, and on final they extend all the way out. There's a logic built in for weight of wheels to extend further on touchdown

    Just starting to learn the viper coming from the hornet. In the hornet you can just trim aoa and then use the throttle to control decent, and while you are doing this the aoa remains on speed, it doesn't seem to work like this is the viper. If i trim the AOA but then start using throttle to place the flight path marker on the runway threshold this appears to adjust the AOA. what's the best practice for getting fpm lined up on runway? e.g. if im high do i stick forward (not throttle down like hornet)?

      If you’re high you need to push the stick foreword and also close the throttle due to the increased speed from your descent. I never use trim in the f16, only time I do that is if I'm asymmetric.

    Hmm i find that if im heavy externals and ag weapons. Pulling 2,5-3g with 300kts maintained throttle that will stall the aircraft. So i need du almost go to full mil during the break. Is this correctly modelled?

    I always end the final turn before or after the runway, never right on and idk what I’m doing wrong

      Just takes practice, if you're overshooting while on speed then you're to close to the runway on downwind. Just keep at it!

    How do you set your turn correctly without trackIR (so without the possibility to turn the head to check the runway location) ? Is there instrument on the HUD who help you find the runway ?

      Check your key bindings under view for using views without trackir, I’ve never used it unfortunately

    Sorry if I missed it but, if you extend full speed brake on final, how much brake do you extend in the approach to final?...

      When airborne with the gear down, the air brakes don't extend fully, this is so the air brakes don't strike the runway when you touch down at proper AOA. You can manually override this by holding the air brake extend key, but they will return to their partially extended position when you release the switch. Once you aerobrake to 100knts and the nose wheel is down, hitting the air brake switch again will fully extend the brakes. Hope this helps and was written clearly. Cheers!

    I always though those wheels on the bottom were takeoff gear cause I have never landed an aircraft in my life ... 198 combat missions and I have been shot down every singe time

    I don't get it ... When I turn into base I have to pull very hard on the stick to not overshoot the runway line and my AOA increases like hell and the aircraft sinks. Coming from the Hornet I may have a bad habit off doing something inproper during this phase but can't figure what ...

      Yah its difficult, just give yourself some more room to turn and you will be golden
