    I know using the parchment paper makes cleanup easier, but it really stops things from cooking properly on the bottom in the air fryer. They sell perforated parchment paper which works a little better, but for stuff like a custard I’d recommend a spritz of a neutral oil and just resting the toast directly on the metal for best results. That’s probably why the middle was a bit mushy.

      I just wanted to add for anyone reading this who doesn’t know, please do NOT use wax paper. I believe the commenter was referring to parchment paper. Wax paper can catch fire and should never be used in an oven or air fryer. Use parchment instead!

    • @sunspot42
      @sunspot42 2 года назад +30

      @@sarahchang6217 Yeah parchment. I edited it. But parchment paper can get caught by the powerful fan in an air fryer and sucked up into the element and catch fire, too.
      Ask me how I know. 🤣
      If you use it, definitely make sure it’s weighted down - especially around the edges - by food or something like a metal rack designed for use in an air fryer.

    I used a ‘wonderbread’ type of bread, as it seemed to be the only bread that would mush down to make a well in the center, which did work when I tried the recipe this morning. I made it vegan: I used a Greek almond milk yogurt, strawberry jam, a little maple syrup, and Just Egg (vegan pourable egg substitute), and vanilla/pinch of salt. It was really good❤️ the bread didn’t absorb the custard, and the bottom of the bread turned crisp and toasted.

      @L1ttlef0ot 2 года назад

      @@sophiew1967 yes, here in the US in my area Just Egg costs around $5, which is about twice the price of a dozen eggs, but if I don’t eat eggs, then I don’t mind when it’s something I don’t eat on a daily basis, and I don’t buy it often (once a month maybe, though a bottle only lasts 7 days after opening, which the same as a carton of milk). Another option I saw someone make for this custard toast was using some chickpea flour and water in place of egg. I haven’t tried it, but that would be much cheaper than Just Egg.

    I wonder if the moisture from the strawberries cooking is what made it so moist? I remember making a dessert pizza with strawberries ages ago and it was practically raw in the middle because of how much moisture the strawberries on it leaked into the dough. I bet it'd be less soggy if the toast were airfried or baked with the custard on it first and then the strawberries were added as a topping. There wouldn't be any concern about burning the fruit then either.

      @@nicks1063 It’s actually a vintage recipe I found in the Betty Crocker card catalogue/ you can use any type of cereal!! I made a video of it and used cinnamon life!!! But so curious what it would be like with wackier cereals!! I think emmy would enjoy it!! If you search on RUclips for cereal coffee cake- it’s the first video. It’s tasty 😋

    I always do this with biscuit dough! 😋
    Just roll them out a bit or flatten them with your hand. Make an indention in the center, spoon custard and bake.
    ~add a bit of cream cheese to the custard
    Then add jam or fresh berries

    !!! i do something super similar with the leftover custard i get from baking pies sometimes! i figured custard wasn't that much different than the egg mixture used to dunk french toast in, a little thicker since it had been cooked on the stove and all, so i spooned some over both sides of a slice of sandwich bread and fried it up with a bit of butter on the stove and oh my god it was DELICIOUS!! it IS just like a cross between french toast and bread pudding! so rich and decadent... to be honest i liked it better than the pie LOL
    i enjoyed the bread-pudding like texture, but i'm wondering if this recipe would be soggier than mine since the french-toast-like method involves flipping it and frying both sides. i don't think mine was a crunchy as yours tho, which i feel like would make for a super interesting texture. maybe next time i make it i'll fry it in the air fryer and try flipping it halfway through so see if i can get that richness i like without the bread getting soggy? the fact the eggs are already cooked might also help with that too... idk! guess i'll just have to find out when i try it!
    also, this is the custard pie recipe that i normally end up doing this with since i get a decent amount of extra filling using a 9-inch shallow pie dish: www.bakedbyanintrovert.com/honey-pie-recipe/. it's honey-flavored just like the one in this video!

    Can always count on Emmy to make & try something I want! Love it. Ty Emmy! Some ppl hate Greek Yogurt. I feel like you have to find the right kind...esp bc Chobani is sour..I personally like TripleOikos or Fage pronounced Fah ya .. its just a test of diff ones...oh and there's a video on how to clean an air fryer. Basically you tk a tad bit of dish soap fill up w water & bake a few minutes then rinse a few times.

      What? People like that French crap over Greek yogurt? Seriously was just talking about this with my husband because he wouldn’t even eat yogurt before we moved to Turkey 10 years ago, now he won’t live without it. It’s also not eaten as a sweet dish over there, that probably helps. I’ve never had Chobani because I’ve only seen it in fat-free where I’m at, and I don’t eat fat-free dairy. Dude who owns it is a Turkish-Kurd so I’m sure he knows what he is doing, and it’s supposed to be sour, it should taste like sour cream.

    I wonder if putting the custard mix on the stove for a bit and then putting that on already toasted toast would be better. That way the egg is still cooked and you get that custard-like feel, but it also isn't seeped into the bread. Plus, then you could just use fresh fruit that doesn't get toasted.

  • @astrosteve
    @astrosteve 2 года назад +1

    I feel like it might work better if you cook it for a bit without fruit (so it doesn't get dried out), then put fruit on and cook it longer. I think that might help with the sogginess because you can cook it longer overall without ruining the fruit on top.

    My own experiment would be dragging thick slices of chocolate-chip brioche through that ersatz-custard and then frying it as French Bread, pressing it down flat so it turns into a 'fake-pancake' then adding the best quality fresh berries I could find with a drizzle of maple syrup. I'm curious how the 'custard' recipe here would work as French Bread batter, just as you wondered too. I second the addition of a dash of good quality vanilla extract. People can be so excellent sometimes, I love the internet when I find people at their most inventive, generous, kind-hearted best. xo

Or do they stay better on your counter? I really like that idea! I've got shriveled blueberries in my fridge right now. I really hate to waste them but idk if they'll be ok. Thanks Emmy!
