@R Hamlet Cairo is waaay worse than T&R. On T&R just conserve Sniper ammo and hide in the path behind the rock and use the AR for the lift fight. Go in with full sniper ammo, and then vacate the belly and hide in side passage ways. Then let the belly fill up, and trigger a large explosion chain that wipes out as many enemies as possible. Use the rest of your ammo to finish them off, then you're done with the hardest section. Use the Camo and drop down in time to skip the next section, then fight into the Hangar. In Hangar use grenade stack and the overshield to fly up to the 2nd or 3rd floor, and from then on the hardest part is over. Use sniper ammo to take over the bridge, then keep pushing and when out of ammo, backtrack to just outside the bridge there's sniper boxes there. Fight your way to keys, then fight to the bridge and kill the invisible elites and it's over. The fact I can remember the strat this many years after doing it, shows T&R at least skill somewhat translates. You can fight your way intelligently thru sections. In Cairo, you cannot complete this mission without Johnson unless you already are very good at Halo 2 LASO, and you won't be that good until you probably have beaten Halo 2 LASO, but Cairo is the first mission. I'd say it's worse than Gravemind LASO, the 2 hangar fights are beyond brutal. And once you clear those sections, there's still so many sections burned into my memory that were brutally difficult. The final fight by the bomb is no joke either, take's a lot of skill and a bit of luck to get thru that.

@R Hamlet I find the CE AI way dumber than Halo 2, the Halo 2 AI bc of the That's Just Wrong and Anger skulls know where you are at all times. In CE they don't, they lose you very easily when you hide. In 2 they don't lose you, and they don't stop firing you unless another target appears to draw their fire elsewhere.
I did T&R three times (bc I hit restart level while escorting Keyes back) and man, took me like 3 hours to get to Hangar on first attempt, and latter attempts were even faster. Cairo took me several months, but keep in mind realistically I only spent like 12-15 hours on it. The 1st hangar, would not cooperate with me. Maybe you got a good run early on? I could only get 1 in 20 runs where I would clear all the elites, and I would not get a checkpoint after idk if the game bugged or what, I didnt get a 2nd checkpoint the hallway to the 2nd hangar and that group that blows up the door to the 1st hangar and comes in would not cooperate either. The elites are bad enough they love to target you with the plasma rifles and you need to land all your plasma nades and hope they berserk, then you need to somehow whittle them down and backsmack the last, and hope they don't turn around when you go for the smack and kill you. Probably spent 10+ hours on the damn hangars, mainly the first one bc I wouldn't get checkpoints and the elites wouldn't stop targeting me. And just the fact you have to kite Johnson around makes it really aggravating and annoying. There's a lot of RNG to how well he distracts the enemies, often they lob nades and he flies to the corner behind a box and then they forgot him and now all converge on you.
On CE you can land grunt kills and those starts explosion chains that at the very least stun the enemies, there's not very many ways to distract Halo 2 elites with the Anger skull. Also in CE you don't need to backsmack, you can smack anywhere and instantly get shields back. In Halo 2 you need to get kills and backsmack is the best way to do it, Sputnik skull makes it doable bc it always flips them and exposes their back upon first punch, but man the rate of fire of the plasma weapons is just brutal, they strip your shields before you have any hope of closing the gap. And Cairo is so enemy dense, it's nightmare fuel.
Maybe I'm just that much better at CE, I've put in probably 2000+ hours into OG Halo 2 before MCC, but CE I probably put in 5000+, I know that game like the back of my hand, to the point I can hip fire the sniper pretty well, so even on controller with no aim assist, T&R just didn't seem too bad idk. I would gladly volunteer for T&R again right now, but it would take a lot to compel me to go thru Cairo again.
Maybe we have different opinions bc we had vastly different experiences? Maybe the game cooperated more for your run of Cairo than mine, and less so for T&R than it did for mine? I think it's more than possible, there is certainly an RNG aspect to the Halo sandbox regardless of skill. Or maybe it's just the game we feel more comfortable with? In CE it's easier to dodge bullets bc it is projectile based, Halo 2 is hitscan, the plasma weapons in Halo 2 work differently as well from CE. In CE like in 3, if you keep moving you can dodge a lot. In 2, there's not many ways to dance your way thru enemy fire, you hide behind cover and pew pew pew, then hide behind cover again bc the enemy weapons fire faster projectiles that are very difficult if not impossible to move out of the way of depending on the weapon.

VERY IMPORTANT: Johnson can and WILL despawn on you if you manage to put enough distance between him and yourself. This is especially troubling in the first hangar area as he will likely be mutilated by the elites and thrown into a corner of the room, and then will eventually despawn because you can't exactly move toward him when there's 6 elites shooting at you. Just in general, if you want to go back to an area to get supplies and you have to leave Johnson more than a distance of a hangar bay away from you, don't. Just move on to the next section or melee Johnson with you back to the previous section. Always make sure you have a Johnson with you before you go into an area with a checkpoint, or all will perish.

    • @Lucifronz
      @Lucifronz 4 года назад +12

If you're in co-op, one person just needs to watch him. It wasn't usually much of an issue for us. It happened once or twice, especially when I went a long way back in the Armory to find weapons, but there's a good chance he was blown upwards to the top of that area and my partner didn't realize (he killed himself later when that happened and I told him Johnson probably wasn't gone).
I just never let my eyes wander too far from him. He's like a pet. Cute, but the little shit constantly runs off.

Sgt. Johnson despawned when I was in the second hangar room with the turrets, and the game checkpointed against my will before I realized he was gone.
In this case I would recommend pushing through regardless as you have already gotten past the most agonizing parts of the mission. This will be a lot more complicated now, but you're almost at the end. Additionally for the turret room, because of the box protecting you at the turret, I think you could comfortably do that room without Johnson as well.
    - In the hallway that leads to the Armory, take the left entrance. The enemies will pool at the right door (or at least they did consistently for me; if they aren't, alert them on that side). Jump over the first opening to the right side and they might not see you. Try and land on the BR so you can pick up the ammo, but either way sprint to the end door. The elite will pop out but melee him once to get him to flip from Sputnik, then try to backsmack him. I don't know how Silver gets it so consistently, but a lot of the time when the elites flip this way, the backsmack doesn't register. Keep trying either way, but know that it's a bit luck based regardless so you will have to do this part a good few times.
    - Once you are in the floor under the Armory, you may find the other elite there behind the doors, but sometimes he has left. If he has left, just disregard him. If he hasn't, back smack him the same way. The elites on the top floor of the armory will notice you but usually don't even shoot at the grating. Sometimes they will charge down the stairs. Melee if so. Keep repositioning until you can get clean backsmacks on them, and the last one you can just wait for him to get close enough for a double melee. Again, this is a bit luck based which can be frustrating on top of the previous section's luck, but keep at it. Grab some ammo, but I think it would be better off to leave the 'killable' boxes till after the checkpoint so you can strategize with them later.
    - It's a bit nervewracking getting the checkpoint in the next room when you don't have an ally to draw fire, but the checkpoint should give you enough time to comfortably get to safety every time you load. Like Silver does, prioritize killing the grunts first. This is awkward and luck based because sometimes the elites will just obliterate you and sometimes you will be able to get through completely unharmed. The elites here will always end up going back to their respective balconies, so when it's just them left, slowly push up to the balconies, up the stairs, and wait for them to charge you in the hallway. Then melee them. For the second elite doing this will likely end up triggering the new spawn of enemies, so hang back for a second after you kill the last elite. The reason I said to save those boxes to kill for shields was because depending on how the elites are treating you, you might want to kill the boxes so you have overshield to push them with.
    - Thankfully because we do not have to worry about Johnson anymore you skip most of the enemies in this section. We want to just jump up to where the turret is. It's a tight crouch jump off the raised garden area, and we have to get it basically on the first try because the enemies will blast us as we attempt it. On my successful attempt I made the jump cleanly but my shields were still totally dropped, and chief made the near-death choking noise, so this is going to be a tight jump. Just sprint through all the doors once you're through. We can worry about our shields in the next section.
    - In the next section we have some marines as well as our invincible allies. I don't believe Silver has mentioned this so early in the guide, but killing NPC allies also counts for regenerating shields for Black Eye. Try and melee them into a spot where you can kill them without immediately losing your shields to incoming fire again. Until you get to the space section it's a simple and slow push through the enemies. Do keep in mind that we don't particularly need our sword anymore and I would highly highly recommend swapping it out for a plasma pistols and carrying as many pistols as you can to the space section (the door will lock behind you afterwards and we really need those!)
    - Space section is basically identical to the guide because we don't really use Johnson here anyways. There's a box you can melee in here for more health. I also found that sometimes the space rangers turn their backs at the door in which case, free easy kill and more shields. If they aren't moving, go back and forth between the airlock entrance and outer space until they move. Slowly pick them off at the other end. If you run out of plasma pistol like I did (even having brought many through the airlock) you can push up close for a melee or a stick. Try moving the boxes with your fists if you need cover. Just be aware that the rangers can be sneaky bastards and move over you with their jetpacks.
    - The bugs are terrible because whoever designed the bugs hates the concept of fun. Definitely start from the airlock room peeking through the doors. Unfortunately you will have to dump BR ammo but we have three sources here; the marine carrying a BR (who will certainly die), the BR on the wall and the BR on the dead marine in the airlock. You can safely take cover at the barricade the marine will die at, but stay at the airlock until you are totally out of ammo there. If you still have ammo when all the left bugs are dead, try pushing out of the airlock a little and then retreating to see if some of the bugs move left side. In a pinch you can use a plasma pistol to slowly pick off bugs; if you are out of BR before fighting the grunts you may be screwed anyways, so if you are super low on BR at checkpoint try using the plasma pistols first. Do not take Silver's advice of dropping down to the elevator before it has finished rising because you will likely die. Instead wait a while for the elevator to come up.
    - When the bugs are clear and you are dealing with the new squad of enemies, pick off the grunts first. You may be able to close the distance a bit if they're hiding. I found success by picking off the grunts, pushing up to the crates on the middle of the elevator, getting lucky by being able to 2 charge an elite and headshot him, and then meleeing the last one and being lucky enough to not die to that. Obviously that isn't consistent but I couldn't find any other way to deal with them. Note that I found the elevator eventually lowers down on its own for some reason. You could come up with a strategy around that, but you should know that when this happened to me, the elites were impossible to hit with plasma pistol because they were far but not far enough to stop moving away from my shots. Now we want to gather up all the weapons in the room and drop them down the ramp. We mainly want plasma pistols but I grabbed the SMGs and everything too because I could. I even put some small crates and one large crate in case I could come up with a use for them but I only ended up needing a few pistols.
    - In the next room hang back in the airlock. Try to get the elites not on the turret first because the turret guy will just chill. When they're all gone go up to the turret and push up against the caution tape underneath (classic graphics) and you should see the next two rangers fly down. Retreat to the airlock, grab ammo, and slowly try to pick off the last two rangers. Again, lots of randomness here, but thankfully they only take one charged shot or one sticky.
    - The bomb room. For this area we will follow the strategy devised by another commenter, full credits to Sumaech for this brilliant play. Move the large crate up to the small crate near the catwalk. The small crate's position is good as is, and we want the large crate covering our flanks so we have a little fortress. Wait for an elite to push up into melee range and whack him. Ideally, you want him to see you through your little fort window, and then he will climb over the catwalk and drop down nearby. Use the fort as cover from the others as you do so. Once you've got one, run over to the opposite side and hide in the corner. We don't need to set up the boxes here (although you can if you'd like). Simply wait in the corner for one elite to hop down and attack, backsmack and hide again. Wait for the second, backsmack him, and return to the fort. We have to deal with 6 elites in total, but 4 of them are going to be pushing our position. Once you've gotten all four of the aggressive ones, you have a lot more room to move around, but unfortunately things get very inconsistent here. I had a lot of trouble with Sumaech's suggestion of rushing them with the sword personally as they seemed to know where I was no matter how I set up the boxes or how I approached them. I ended up using plasma pistol to drop one of their shields and headshot, then rushed the other one with a standard melee. Don't forget that they can kill you mid sword draw so you need to be precise. Expect to mess up a bunch getting there and having to try those last two a bunch more times.
Good luck. I know this is a huge essay length but if it can save others from having to spend as long on this mission as I did then it's worth it. If you are patient enough to have gotten this far you can do it with enough time.

Update, it took me a while and being occupied with stuff IRL. But I found the keys to this success
1-this should be your last halo game you want to beat on laso cause damn is this shit hard
2-the 1st hanger you want to take it slow while there are still grunts around stick the elites to find out who is going to agro and pull out the sword. From there prioritize the elites that only use rifles. Take your time and be patient.
3-most of the time you can shoot an elite twice that’s next to Johnson and he will see him and engage. From there just play it safe and finish off with a head shot.
4-don’t be afraid to rush elites…be close and wait for their rifle to over heat. Hitting elites is a good way to pause the fight and have them expose their back to you.
5-IF AT ANY POINT YOU LOSE SIGHT OF JOHNSON SAVE AND QUIT. I have had to restart this mission 4 times each of them where pass both hangers…stay close to Johnson during checkpoints and avoid going back to other areas to grab ammo. You won’t run out

I know that there's a lot of practice and tries behind it, but for the tutorial, it might have been ok even if some deaths occur and/or just edited out, but to get it so excellent, specially with some very close calls, it's amazing.
The best tutorial; straight to the point. I'm gonna definitely try it; I grew up with Halo 2 in Legendary, so I know that it requires patience (I think I, personally, find more tedious the CE Legendary, let alone LASO, just because of the checkpoint system in there; but there's no question that I always found Cairo Station among the hardest levels ever, specially because it's more difficult to properly skip as opposed to Outskirts).

This video is an excellent guide for Cairo Station on LASO. That said, I think something VERY important is overlooked:
If you wander too far away from Johnson at any point in the level, there is a very high chance that he will despawn and disappear from the level completely. Say, for example, you're in the room just before you link up with Miranda and the second Johnson. You slice and dice Johnson all the way up to the barricade directly underneath the room with the grunts stationed at a turret overlooking the room. Now, let's say you decide to run back into the armory to grab some more BR ammo. At this point, there's a pretty good chance that Johnson will suddenly disappear from the level and cannot be recovered without using the Iron Skull workaround, which, of course, means loading in at the previous checkpoint, thus undoing everything you achieved in that area. I know this for a fact, because while I was running this level on LASO using the Johnson exploit, I lost him no less than five times at various points throughout the level, and had to quit the game and load back in at my last checkpoint in order to bring him back. It happened in the area I mentioned above (the large room outside the armory), in the area where you encounter the first boarding craft (three times), and in the final area with the bomb. Again, excellent guide, but I think it is extremely necessary to stress just how important it is that you never wander too far away from Johnson, especially across distances of two or more rooms apart.

For those of you struggling with the last room and may have lost Johnson I have a little guide based off a few of the other comments so props to those guys.
-As soon as you exit the elevator, run to the right side under the catwalk melee that small box out of the way so you can lunge at elites when they push you, the elites will be firing at you heavy. Stick hard in the corner and wait for one to push you, he will most likely round the corner rather than running wide so long as you're backed far into the corner, if youre close to the edge of the wall, he might run wide or not round the corner at all, meaning you'll have to push out further. Melee finish him off. I've noticed that the plasma pistol melees way faster and is more consistent than the BR.
-Once he's dead, run to the other side of the room and repeat the process, hide under the catwalk, melee the elite as he rounds the corner. This time there will be 2 instead of 1. Once you've killed one just do the same for the other. again, stick far in the corner so they round it. sometimes theyll drop off the catwalk above you so keep an eye out. You might have to shoot them to get their attention. Moving close to the edge of the wall and then back into the corner often prompts them to push you faster.
-When they're both dead, head back to the right side of the room and hide under the catwalk again. This time the elite has 2 plasma rifles and likes to run wide or sometimes even run up on top of the middle part. You might want to use a sword if one of the other elites have dropped one, as you can melee much faster and lunge, however if you're low on shields, use the plasma pistol so when you backsmack him you get your shields back. He is pretty inconsistent and hard to kill. I died a lot to him.
-Once he's dead, i used a plasma pistol to noob combo both of the remaining elites. Neither of these will push past the back of the room, but they will stray left and right. If you dont have a plasma piston, use a plasma rifle, crouch behind one of the small boxes and pick at them from afar, then finish with the BR. You can also melee the boxes to get closer and try melee them but this only worked for me once to kill just 1 elite before the other killed me and i tried it for ages, so I'm not sure how effective that is.
    - you can also shepherd them with grenades to lock them on the right side next to the bomb, and blow the big boxes away so they have no cover.
    Hope this helps!

I was never even interested in LASO until I watched this H2A series and realized it was full of fun tricks. Just beat Cairo Station following your guide. It helped me feel like I was progressing, but there's so much unpredictable AI behavior that it was still a fun struggle. Johnson kept despawning on me in the first hangar bay and the Elites refused to berserk anytime I got a stick in there, but I did the second bay without having to reset at all. Johnson also took it upon himself to run all the way up the ramp of the MAC platform during the spacewalk segment and jump off the end; when I reset and slowed him down the second time, he ran and jumped to the little area opposite the door side and gave me the easiest kills possible. Wild Card Johnson. Anyway, thanks for making this series! The videos are concise and very well put together with great explanations.
