Yes, you're right. Pants iron-on hem tape is not permanent but it's durable. I use this kind of iron-on fabric tape and works great for me. Also, not all fabric hemming tapes are equally good. I noticed some brands hold the fold better than others.
Thank you for the video. I have some questions if you dont mind answering. Are they permanent? Does washing effect their hold? Can they be removed to re-adjust for a growing child? Dose the tumble dryer effect the hold?
I have hemmed few pairs of uniform pants for my kids and I had no problem with the fabric tape. The tape that I used was not a permanent fix although it's durable. I was able to remove it and re-adjust. It can leave a small residue of old glue mark but it's on the left side of the fabric. Most likely you'll need a new fabric tape for new hemline as the glue might not hold the fold. And last question - I didn't have any problem with the tumble dryer. What I did had a problem with is when my kids put on the pants and somehow were able to open up the hem/ rip the tape with feet/toes! Other than that I like this product. It worked well for me.

Think I'd still be inclined to get rid of the bulk length and do it that way. It's unlikely that as an adult you'd grow in height... and I wouldn't use this technique for growing kids...

I tried these many times, and the hold is too weak. Definitely NOT permanent. I wish you had done a gentle pull test.
