Thanks again!
Wow, that's very kind! I hated tailoring in the beginning. I found it very frustrating, and the person who mentored me was a stickler so it was even harder to get things perfect. But with years of practice it molded me into the tailor I am today! Thankful for the skill set and that I'm able to pass it along to others.

My granddaughter asked if I could shorten her flailed jeans by about 3 inches. I watched your video first. I knew I'd have an issue with too much fabric, but I worked around that. I'm sooo impressed even if I say so myself. Your method worked and you wouldn't (honestly) know they'd been taken up. Thank you for your GREAT tutorial.
Hey I’ve just finished my husband’s jeans this way and they look amazing. I was struggling a bit with sewing through the bulky seams but after two needles, few bad words and watching your video multiple times I’ve made it! Thank you!
i think it wouldn't work without cussing and needles broken... should be part of instructions. i was at that stage an hour ago but i'm out of the woods now. tip for walking over the double-seam bulk: don't make the foot lift it's toes, make it level, lift the heel otherwise it gets stuck, and reduce presser tension as needed.
Cute but not everybody has that commercial machine that handles heavy fabric... almost impossible with a home residential machine... probably need to have a number 16 needle in your machine also...
I really like that you took the time to show the zigzag stitches on a sample patch with contrast in the colors. Well explained and useful for an untrained man who mostly only has a simple sewing machine just to change the length of pants 😬👍🏻😉
I find it so thrilling to see young people sewing. It is amazing your take on tailoring. It is such an important thing to know. My mom was a seamstress and made a nice side job salary just altering people's store-bought clothes. I am also tickled that you are using machines from before you were born, at least it look like they are vintage. Happy sewing!
I have hemmed many pants in my 30 years of sewing. What a great tutorial on how to hem jeans. Wish I had known this. You can always learn a new trick!!! However, I don't sew any more due to carpal tunnel surgery in both hands and cubital tunnel surgery in elbow! Word to the wise.... exercise and stretch your hands to keep from getting carpal tunnel! Sewing all those years messed up my lower back, neck and hands!!!! Boy do I miss my industrial machine!!!
You are a natural teacher! I’m not a sewer, but love to see “how”! As others have posted, this video is excellent. No bad music. Just you and your beautifully enunciated explanation. Bravo!.
You articulate instructions with a high clarity that anyone can understand! This is so useful as removing the original hem takes away from the style of jeans. I always take a short size but have found that short and petite seem to be lumped together causing short sizes to be too short! Even for me at 5’2’. I have been contemplating a change to regular length and then I will try your method to restore hemline! Excellent video! Thank for sharing your tailoring expertise!
Wow! Thank you for such a wonderful video. I just completed my first hem using this process (after over 40 years of running my own little sewing business). I am so happy with them! Again, thank you!
You are amazing, I looked at the comments, and you answered every one of them. Nobody else on "instructional videos" has ever done this before, that I know of. Now here is my comment. I am a retired surgeon, and have been sewing up people for 48 years. So, in a way, you could say that I like to sew, which I actually do like. To me, sewing is an art form, and I view myself as an artist. Over the years many patients and nurses have commented that my stitches are works of art, perfect, and very beautiful. Also, as a surgeon, I used many different materials to sew up people with, like various thicknesses of silk thread, various thicknesses of synthetic fibers, Cat Gut, even various gauges of wire, and also staples...to mention just a few. In closing I would tell you that your video was very interesting to me. Thank you, Dr. G.W.
Wow! Thanks for that insight! Sometimes I think about having to sew on skin, like if someone had an injury or something. I wonder how well I would do. That's such a rare skill! Thank you for helping those in need, and for your appreciation of my work. Also, cat gut??
Thank you very much! Don't let the machines fool you. This can be done with almost any machine. You just may need a little practice. Thanks for watching!
An excellent & well organised tutorial session that even a lay man understands well enough to ask an experienced tailor what is to be done.A great instructor. 👍
Yes, I totally agree. I’ve been sewing for longer than her age and I have “NEVER” seen this layed out and explained in such wonderful detail or like this at all! I’m amazed. ❤️👍🏼😉
I’m very impressed, I’ve seen a tutorial like this before but I like this one much better because it is better explained and you took your time explaining all the helpful details, thank you very much for sharing with us, blessings❤️
This is a wonderful technique with easy to follow instructions. One caveat, if you've ever had pants altered by a european tailor you'll recognize this. Most peoples' bodies do not have legs the same length, so every european tailor I've used has measured both legs and the lengths are always slightly different. In fact, if I go to a tailor now and they don't measure both legs, I find someone else. I'd recommend asking a friend to measure both legs. Sometimes the differences are very slight, in which case carrying on with your method for both legs will work. For me, there is 1/2"-1" difference depending on fabric in the pants, and also the shoes.
Back when I was wearing business suits, my tailor was Italian and he always measured/marked both legs. I always wondered if this was the way he was taught or it's just something he picked up along the way. Now I know.
I'm on the high-side of 60 and I''ve been sewing on a an entry-level Singer for almost 15 years doing just basic personal clothing work. I've shortened many pairs of pants along with several pairs of jeans over the years. Always did a simple cut-tuck=and roll on my jeans but, while it worked well enough, I missed the "factory hem" at the bottom. Your video is so well-done that I decided that I'd give your method a try. Watched it a couple of times before jumping in... actually, as you show in your video, it's quite a straight-forward process. Not many more jeans left in my future but I now have a reliable way of getting that factory hem back. Thanks for the great video and the work that I'm sure went into making it. BTW... nice to see someone young using some older equipment.
Thank you very much for the kind words! As far as machines go, the older the better. New stuff just isn't built the same. Glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching.
I just used this method to hem an expensive pair of jeans and you’d never know they were hemmed! Your instructions were so clear and easy to follow. Thank you!
Fantastic tutorial, thank you! I have seen a couple of tutorials for this elsewhere but what I really like about this one is that you explain really clearly how you measure the seam allowances. Thank you!
Wow! That is an incredible finished product! Amazing! I can guarantee you that is NOT what mine would look like but I find it very interesting to know what I'm paying for now! Also I sincerely appreciate your skill as a teacher. Clear, concise accessible, thorough. Well paced and well delivered. High level and your voice is lovely to boot! Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial. Although I've watched it in the past, I used it this week for hemming my son's jeans. I am appreciative that you showed both Serger and Sewing machine approaches, since I battled with my serger for a whole evening to get it to work. The pants came out great and I'm ready to take on the big stack of hem alterations that have piled up!
Excellent video! Good focus, proper lighting, understandable instructions, and useful project. Also, no annoying jabber, clutter, me-me-me crap, or intrusive background music. BTW, I don't wear jeans but I still find the techniques useful. Well done.
You are the best! Fantastic video and step by step instructions to help anyone including a true novice. I have been sewing for less than 12 hours now and I just hemmed a pair of pants using your method and they look great and fit great. Thank you!!
Very Well Done!! I have been sewing since I was 8 or 9 yrs., 2 Aunts were Seamstresses, along with w/a Senior Professional 4 doors down from me..All trained me Well! Love the check-twice system! I did sew professionally as well, nowadays in retirement. Great Teaching Tool!!
Just happened on to your channel so was interested to see how you do it. Was very impressed with how well you presented the subject, yourself and how well-modulated your voice was while teaching. You were great at sharing tips and giving choices where possible. Your smile is lovely and infectious too which never hurts when teaching. Thank-you for the lovely experience.
I could never do this myself, and enjoy watching your techniques, expert craftsmanship and measuring checks that assure accuracy. So diligent and thorough. Great work!
I can't believe how great the end result looks, fantastic!! I never knew about the trick of pinching the fabric together so you don't get the angles. I've shortened jeans before and I didn't know how to do it this way, so I had those angles.
Another way to avoid the peaks is after you've marked the lines and before you cut the excess off, turn the pant so that you only see the front and if there's a peak to redraw the line straight across. Use your ruler to line up the marks on the side seams and run the chalk among the ruler. This will make a straight line below the peak. And redraw on the back as well. But you'll end up with a couple extra lines which can get confusing, so strike out the line you don't want to use to help keep track.
Thank you very much! That was my intention in making this video. Some might find it too wordy, but I feel it's more important to be thorough enough so that any level of skill can understand it.
Unbelievable and you are still so young! Some are just born with deft fingers and great spatial sense. With lesser skills I do minor alterations on my housewear clothes only! Thanks for the great tutorial 👍
I'm quickly approaching not young, but thank you! I started pretty early so I've got lots of practice. Bravo to you for being willing to work on your own stuff! Most people can't even sew in a button so you're already ahead of the curve.
Omg, I’m amazed, have been sewing very simple things for 40 yrs , this is a great professional finish. I have tried hemming jeans always take to an alteration shop after I cuss and cry !!!
I live in Florida and there's a cleaners here that does the hem like that, preserving the original seam line. Great work. Your educators skills are awesome.
Nice! Never thought I would be captivated by a sewing tutorial. This is the skill(s) I need from those at my local alterations shop. I'm very willing to pay more for this kind of work.
Yes! This is a new technique I've never seen before! It's a great tutorial done exceptionally well! The only thing I would find helpful, is the thread preference and needle size. Great job!
@@Sue-qc8ol The thread I'm using is normal weight thread. Either size 14 or denim size 16 would be good. Just depends on your machine and how it sews, and the thickness of your denim. Sometimes a 14 works better on really stretchy denim. Sometimes 16 is better if the denim is stiff and thick.
Beautifully done! It's worth keeping in mind that the sewing machine needle needs to be the proper size for sewing denim. A regular needle can bend & break, so use a needle for heavyweight fabric. Nice job instructing this video!
This was a fabulous lesson on using an original hymn. You were concise clear and spot on with your guidance. I want to follow you on whatever you do. Thank you so very much.

I'm 5'2". I have to shorten EVERYTHING. There is next to no way a home sewing machine has the power to sew through the heavy jeans hems. This works! It preserves the original look, but shortens the pants perfectly. Thanks so much for this tip.
Well done young lady! Precise and to the point! I’ve been sewing and tweaking things for a long long while now. Must admit had not tried this hem before and will definitely do so! Many blessings to you and lots of success in your channel. ❤️👵🏻 ps: will def watch other tutorials ❤
Thank you so very much for these very easy to follow instructions. The way that you showed us how to do to pant legs and you used to different ways to finish up the hem line. One was with the serger and the other was with the zig zag on the regular machine. I didn't know of these techniques to be so easy to understand. I had seen someone do something similar yet the way you taught this class was so easy to follow. Thank you again !!!
This is the best video I’ve found on this subject. I could easily say “I agree with what everybody else says,” but some of it bears repeating. It’s very well organized. Attention is paid to details and suggestions are made for finessing a few things that one would only know about from experience and observation, such as pinching the lengthwise seam and emphasizing the exact placement of the stitch when reconnecting the cuff to the leg. This is all supported with well lit close-up shots of all the action.
Your work is awesome and I have been sewing for 50 years and just learned from you. Never too late to reach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for sharing your skills. I would love to have a serger, saving up saving up.
I just shortened the first pair of my husband's new jeans. The technique worked as demonstrated in the video. They look great and measured out as originally planned. Thanks so much. This is such a better result than my previous attempts at re-hemming jeans.
Wow! Awesome tutorial with tons of helpful tips! Marking both the pant leg and the original hem with matching markings is super smart, I wouldn’t have thought of that! Also marking the 12” up to ensure the finished alteration is correct is very smart! Just subscribed, you’re awesome!! Thank you for taking the time to teach us beginners!
I do needle and thread sewing almost daily. Really enjoyed this video. Someday maybe I'll be able to afford a sewing machine. Surg machine was super cool!
My husband is so happy. He found your video and asked me to watch. I started not to because I took one look at you and said " She's to young to know any thing about sewing! " Well I watched it and decided to try it out on a new pair of his jeans . Thought that marking which piece came off of which leg was useless, until I got to the part of putting them back on! Thanks to your instructions I only had to rip out 1 seam, and that was my fault for letting the side seam get out of line. My husband says this is the first time in almost 70 years that he has been able to wear jeans that were short enough with the original hem. Thanks !
Excellent! Seems like alot of work just to retain that gold stitched old hem. Why not use same color thread as old hem when doing a new hem! Makes sense to me.
@@racheltharrington6241 You definitely can do it that way. Some people prefer to have the original wear lines and look of the stitching that may be hard to duplicate. But if you'd rather hem them with a traditional rolled hem, I have a video for that also.
Definitely a tailor's nice and more thorough way of accomplishing an original hem. I don't have a machine so I've used the Pinterest way of sewing at the original hem then cutting off the excess. It's worked well for me but definitely it could've used a surge to prevent some fraying better than what I did...and the original hem flipped up once in a while. Great tutorial, thank you!
I am super impressed with this video. Very clear and concise AND covers all the scenarios. I don't really sew that much, but I think I can handle my husband's jeans now. Thank you so very much!

Good luck & "we NEED u"
Really well explained. I must have shortened dozens of pairs of jeans, but always done it by re-making the bottom hem, which can be difficult to get right (at least for me). Next pair I do I’ll try this way. Thanks for explaining this so clearly!

I really love this specific method. I've done original hems on my jeans before and never really liked how they looked. I just bought the gold thread and hemmed them with that. But that has its own set of issues. My daughter just bought some new jeans with a very specific hem and needs them shortened so I can on to find a better method. Thank you so much.
First how to hem video I've seen that wasn't garbage for entertainment only. Very thorough and informative. Only question was stitch length on last seam next to original hem(gold), but maybe I missed it. Thanks again.
I'd say you want a medium to long stitch. If the fabric is stretchy you want to go as long as possible. Otherwise small stitching will stretch the fabric out and the hem will be wavy.
I just finished my first hem and when I was done I said, WOW! Fellow once-Minnesotan congratulates you on a fantastic video. You covered it all and it wasn't hard at all with your instruction Thank you.

i think it wouldn't work without cussing and needles broken... should be part of instructions. i was at that stage an hour ago but i'm out of the woods now.
tip for walking over the double-seam bulk: don't make the foot lift it's toes, make it level, lift the heel otherwise it gets stuck, and reduce presser tension as needed.
Cute but not everybody has that commercial machine that handles heavy fabric... almost impossible with a home residential machine... probably need to have a number 16 needle in your machine also...
@@rjlaxvespa1742 mine definitely isn’t and I have managed, you just have to go slowly.
Denim needle works better. But you got the job done.
I really like that you took the time to show the zigzag stitches on a sample patch with contrast in the colors. Well explained and useful for an untrained man who mostly only has a simple sewing machine just to change the length of pants 😬👍🏻😉
Thanks for noticing the details!
I've been sewing for over 40 yrs and never seen this technique before. Excellent!
Learn something new every day! Thank you.
I have found a new hero! I’m 4’10” and have had to hem EVERYTHING! This is awesome!!!
Great! I hope it works out well.
Honestly one of the most easy videos to follow, i literally paused at every step i needed. My alteration looks amazing!! Thank you so much!!!
That's great! I'm glad that worked out for you.
I'm older than some of them! But yes, they don't make them like they used to.
Dang, I hope I don't have the same issues! Thanks for watching.
You are a natural teacher! I’m not a sewer, but love to see “how”! As others have posted, this video is excellent. No bad music. Just you and your beautifully enunciated explanation. Bravo!.
Thank you very much! That's very kind.
No problem, thanks for watching!
Wow! Thank you for such a wonderful video. I just completed my first hem using this process (after over 40 years of running my own little sewing business). I am so happy with them! Again, thank you!
That's great! I'm glad that worked out for you.
Only highly skilled person like yourself could do this. Looks very difficult! Your machines look like they are very well maintained! Thank you.
Thank you very much! Don't let the machines fool you. This can be done with almost any machine. You just may need a little practice. Thanks for watching!
An excellent & well organised tutorial session that even a lay man understands well enough to ask an experienced tailor what is to be done.A great instructor. 👍
That's very kind, thank you!
@@TailorItYourself Welcome 👍
Yes, I totally agree. I’ve been sewing for longer than her age and I have “NEVER” seen this layed out and explained in such wonderful detail or like this at all! I’m amazed. ❤️👍🏼😉
Muuten oikein hyvä, mutta ihan liikaa puhetta. Kuulehan, ei turhaa selostusta.
I’m very impressed, I’ve seen a tutorial like this before but I like this one much better because it is better explained and you took your time explaining all the helpful details, thank you very much for sharing with us, blessings❤️
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for sharing
Danni, Thank you for such a clear and non-intimidating presentation. You are a natural instructor!
Hey Steve, thanks! It certainly doesn't feel natural. I should send you my outtakes!
In the video where I show how to properly fit the length, I show how you mark from the floor up to accommodate for leg difference.
Thank you!
That's excellent! I'm glad that worked for you.
Fantastic tutorial, thank you! I have seen a couple of tutorials for this elsewhere but what I really like about this one is that you explain really clearly how you measure the seam allowances. Thank you!
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the feedback.
She did a thorough job explaining each step, a great teacher
Thanks Helen!
Thank you!
Thank you very much for that! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
@@TailorItYourself 😊😊
Thank you for this tutorial. Although I've watched it in the past, I used it this week for hemming my son's jeans. I am appreciative that you showed both Serger and Sewing machine approaches, since I battled with my serger for a whole evening to get it to work. The pants came out great and I'm ready to take on the big stack of hem alterations that have piled up!
Thanks for coming back! I'm glad you found it helpful and it lead you to success. Good luck with the rest of the stack!
This is the best original hem I’ve seen.
In other videos you can see the bulk and once you did the stitching it flattened it out very well.
Thank you! There's many ways to accomplish the same task. But some have a better result than others. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful tutorial! I have seen and designed clothes for decades and never saw this technique until now! How cool is this! Brava ☺️
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.
By far - BEST video I've seen for this type of hemming! Just cropped a pair of jeans and they're perfect! Thank you!!!
You're most welcome! Bravo on a job well done.

Excellent video! Good focus, proper lighting, understandable instructions, and useful project. Also, no annoying jabber, clutter, me-me-me crap, or intrusive background music. BTW, I don't wear jeans but I still find the techniques useful. Well done.

Trish, completely agree on your video review. She got to point, was clear and loved that there wasn't any stupid music
@@TailorItYourself can this type of hem work on pants that are not denim material?
@@debz6573 You can do this on any pants that have a relatively straight leg.
You are the best! Fantastic video and step by step instructions to help anyone including a true novice. I have been sewing for less than 12 hours now and I just hemmed a pair of pants using your method and they look great and fit great. Thank you!!
That is awesome! I'm glad you found it helpful and you had success with it! Bravo. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the kind words! Hope you're enjoying retirement!
Wow, thank you very much! I appreciate the kind feedback.
I could never do this myself, and enjoy watching your techniques, expert craftsmanship and measuring checks that assure accuracy. So diligent and thorough. Great work!
Thank you! You'd be surprised what you can accomplish if you just try, and practice!
But you'll end up with a couple extra lines which can get confusing, so strike out the line you don't want to use to help keep track.

i believe this is the best sewing tutorial i've ever seen. The video, explanation, everything. So great! Thank you!
That's very kind, thank you very much!
Very good presentation. You gave attention to every small detail, so that the viewer is not left guessing. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much! That was my intention in making this video. Some might find it too wordy, but I feel it's more important to be thorough enough so that any level of skill can understand it.
Some of the best alteration videos I've seen. You explain and showcase the how-to very well. 🤙
Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback.
I love your method of using the original hemming of jeans.
Thank you very much!
I'm sorry you had trouble! I hope you have better luck in the future.
I live in Florida and there's a cleaners here that does the hem like that, preserving the original seam line. Great work.
Your educators skills are awesome.
Thank you!
Very Clever and it’s very easy to follow
I'm glad you think so! Thank you for watching.
Nice! Never thought I would be captivated by a sewing tutorial. This is the skill(s) I need from those at my local alterations shop. I'm very willing to pay more for this kind of work.
If you ever want to send things my way, you can email me at trestertailor@gmail.com
Yes, that is mostly true, but it also depends on the type of machine that you're using. Thanks for watching!
Schmetz makes needles just for jeans. I find the 16 or 18 works fine.
Hi, thanks for the great instructions. I'm a 63 yr man, I only sew repairs and minor alterations if I have to.

I'm 5'2". I have to shorten EVERYTHING. There is next to no way a home sewing machine has the power to sew through the heavy jeans hems. This works! It preserves the original look, but shortens the pants perfectly. Thanks so much for this tip.

Thank you! I'm glad you found it useful. I try to think about things when I was first learning and what I needed to hear in order to understand.
I'm very glad to hear that. There's always room for improvement but I appreciate you saying this passes muster!
Your work is awesome and I have been sewing for 50 years and just learned from you. Never too late to reach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for sharing your skills. I would love to have a serger, saving up saving up.
I hope you can get one soon! But a zig zag stitch will work also.
I just shortened the first pair of my husband's new jeans. The technique worked as demonstrated in the video. They look great and measured out as originally planned. Thanks so much. This is such a better result than my previous attempts at re-hemming jeans.
That's great! I'm glad that worked out for you.

I do needle and thread sewing almost daily. Really enjoyed this video. Someday maybe I'll be able to afford a sewing machine. Surg machine was super cool!
You can do all this by hand if you want, it will just take much longer and may not hold up as well. But it certainly can be done without a machine.
Needle and thread. Admirable!! 💕
Ive had jeans altered this way. I now have a new appreciation for the work that went into it.
Perspective is everything!
Thanks !
Ha, I used to get the age comment A LOT. I'll be thankful when I'm older though. Glad you gave it a try and had success! Well done.
I love this video on how to hem without losing the old hem. Wonderful video!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Wonderful tutorial. The explanation and demonstration are very clear to understand.Awesome teacher!
Thank you for the kind feedback!
Glad you've got a method that works for you and that you're willing to try. That's better than most people!

Wow excellent & everyone has already said everything I was thinking! I watched 'sewing with Nancy for years' u explain things wonderfully just like she did. And u need to have your own tv show!!! Wow that would be amazing! I could certainly use help on the production side. 😅
Is there anything as your 'fan club' we can do to help get u to the status of 'sewing with Nancy'? Good luck & "we NEED u"
If anyone is willing to get the word out, I would gladly accept that help in any fashion!

Terrific video! Your detail and steps are perfect.

Thanks for being willing! Happy to help.
Best video on this method.
Thanks Douglas! Appreciate that.
