This movie was made because 1 of Spielberg's kids asked him after watching Disney's Peter Pan what if Peter Pan grew up? Spielberg was so fascinated by this idea that he came up with the story for Hook.
Close! It was the kid of the writer James Hart who asked that. Spielberg quit the project early on at first - before production started - as he'd just had a kid of his own, so Hart began developing an entirely new storyline - one that wasn't just a remake - and that's when his son threw that question at him. Even showed him pencil drawings of Hook who had survived, and the crocodile now dead with a clock in its mouth, if memory serves. Took inspiration from those and a sequel was born. Spielberg came back on board a couple of years later of course, once Hart's script landed on his desk. So shout out to James Hart's son!
Not to ruin your moment but it was not actually Spielberg who came up with the idea because of one of his children asking (trust me, I thought it was Spielberg as well until I did a little more digging). It was actually James V. Hart (the scriptwriter of Hook) who was talking with his son, Jake, about Peter Pan during a family dinner and Jake simply asked what if Peter Pan did grow up, which sparked the idea.
14:47 As a metalworker, I appreciate how far they went in making that prop hook. Those sparks weren't CG, they were practical, and the fact the sparks were white means it wasn't just plain steel. That hook was made of titanium.
I'm a 26 year old man and every time I watch the ending scene with the line "Don't leave us, Peter. And don't say goodbye". I tear up every time, almost cry. This movie was a part of my childhood and I watch it at least once a year.
This movie is really good and a great source of character development for Peter. Everyone nailed their roles and the line, "A man so quick, he's even fast asleep!" is still one of my favorite movie quotes of all time.
From a kids perspective, this movie was absolutely magical when I was a kid. The story telling in the shadow of the blanket and flying into your window, wow. ❤❤❤❤

I loved how true this movie was to the original story rather than the Disney version... FUN FACT: In the book, Peter Pan regularly fought both sides (Lost Boys & Pirates). One of the biggest reasons for Hook to hate Peter was that they started out together as Pirates, and it was the Pirates that taught Pan how to use a sword. Its why Hook & Pan are so evenly matched in swordfights, despite Hook being several times bigger than Peter's younger self. It was only after Peter got bored of playing with the pirates that he started flying back to the normal world, looking for other kids to play with (which in turn got him to start The Lost Boys).
55:28 growing up is very scary for everyone, because you don't know what's gonna happen and you have to leave behind your past. But the end one adventure is the beginning of another: childhood is one adventure, adolescence is other, then adulthood and finally old age, and you realized you had the most awfully big adventure of your whole life
One of my favourite lines in the movie is a bit of a jab at Dustin Hoffman's... not-so-imposing stature: PETER: I seem to remember you being a lot taller. HOOK: To a 10 year old I'm huge! Also Bob Hoskins as Smee. "I've just had an apostrophe!" 🤣🤣

Lol I’m still amazed that Phil Collins was the detective who thought the kidnapping was a prank. Apparently, for that one scene, he was the best Spielberg could find. Just funny as hell.
25:22 - It may look like Smee is nicking the delicious food here, but he's actually testing them for poison 28:04 - Hook, Smee or both must have left Neverland earlier to keep an eye on Peter and wait for the right time. Maggie said there was a strange man outside the house and Hook has Jack's base ball. Scary isn't to have stalker you have no idea of... 48:21 - When someone makes this kinds of threats on you, the only solution is kill the guy. Peter may want to leave Hook alone alive, but he has got to think about his grandkids and great grandkids. 53:29 - Remember when Hook told Smee to do something intelligent? Well Smee listened stole stuff and retired. An intelligent thing to do.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Saw it for the first time with my dad and after losing my father and becoming a dad myself I have a great appreciation for this movie.
"Oh, there you are, Peter." I'm not sure if it's the music, the story or seeing the face of Robin Williams, but that scene gives me goosebumps every time I see it.
So many famous faces in this movie. Maggie Smith as Wendy. Phil Collins as the detective. George Lucas and Carrie Fisher as the kissing couple floating in the air. Glenn Close as the pirate put in the boo box. David Crosby as the pirate who said "Save me, Daddy!"
"Don't try to stop me this time Smee! Don't you dare try to stop me this time Smee, try to stop me. Smee, you'd better get up off your ass, this isn't a joke! I'm COMMITTING...SUICIDE!" This was a childhood movie of mine and I love it still to this day. The introduction to Hook is so damn epic, from the "Follow the Hook"to his entrance onto the ship. The pirate who is put in the box is Glenn Close in a beard. The couple kissing on the bridge as Tinkerbell flies over is George Lucas and Carrie Fisher(Princess Leia). Rufio is also Prince Zuko. The music is John Williams, meaning it's always epic. The Last War music is so cool.
Two amusing cameos: Glenn Close is the pirate stuffed into the boo box and wannabe pirate Jimmy Buffett is one of the guys who tries to steal Peter's shoes.
Pan Am airlines happens to have gone out of existence the same year this movie was released. I am surprised you didn't notice "Pan" Am was a Peter Pan joke.
This is one of my favorite adaptations of Peter Pan, and Robin Williams role. Like Jim Carrey he’s just one of those actors that can blend humor and drama perfectly. Such a unique concept for Peter Pan too, I know everyone at some point who’s ever seen Peter Pan, wonders what would happen if he grew up. I appreciate that this isn’t just “Peter Pan in a modern setting” and that he’s capable of regaining his memories, his childlike joy and go back to Neverland- sure the “ workaholic father learns a lesson and in the end is there for his kids” trope is a little cliche for a 90s family film but it still works because you forget about that once he’s in Neverland trying to remember himself again. And, let’s be honest, cliches don’t even matter when Robin Williams is playing the main character, it’s just good no matter what. Super fun to rewatch always.
22:37 Zuko! It took me years to put the voice to the face. And he’s in red and black perfect Fire Nation colors. 33:50 most modern version i can think of is Descendants 2 when the main characters are dance fighting for the wand and while the set isnt as big as Hook’s it is similar a bit.
12:09 Firefly from hell is pretty spot on. Julia Roberts was going thru a bad breakup while filming Hook and was difficult to work with on set earning her the nickname "Tinkerhell." Also, Surprise Cameo: When Tinkerbell is carrying Peter off to Neverland and the dust makes the kissing couple fly, that is Carrie Fisher and George Lucas.
This movie was hilarious, with the Lost Boys being not the nicest to Pan at first, 1 of them literally asking “Who’s the shrub?” after he got tangled in vines, and Hook just being a riot, with the attempted suicide that he made Smee stop and the talk with the kids and giving them Fs on their papers, just hilarious
It’s a tradition for Peter Pan to be played by a female cast member in stage productions. Because adult women are better able to pass for a young boy (in voice) than adult men.
1:15 It's not that they couldn't get a boy for the role. It's theater tradition for Peter to be played by a girl/woman. Especially in productions where the actors are all adults, having a woman play him emphasizes that he's pre-pubescent and more pixie-ish than the other boys.
This was my grandad’s favourite movie. He died back in 2016 (2 years after Robin Williams) Thank you so much Tim for bringing back memories. You’ll always be one of my favourite reaction RUclipsrs
There are so many amazing cameos in this movie. The pirate that Peter talks to is musician David Crosby, the pirate that ends up in the boo box is Glenn Close, and the couple that ends up sprinkled with fairy dust are George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.

This is truly my absolute favorite Peter Pan film hands and hook down. Fun Fact: the moment Peter choose a Thud as his successor, the reactions are genuine. Spielberg and Robin Williams knew who would get the sword and kept quiet about it. So none of the Lost Boys ever knew who would be the successor. At the 25th anniversary, Dante Bosco as well as the other last boys squeeze backed into their lost boy costumes and honored Robin Williams, since he was not there to share the happy moment with them. RIP Robin Williams. 👨👩👧👦👵🏻🧚🧜♀️🏴☠️🐊⚔️💚💛❤️
Absolutely love this film! The part where Peter flies into the sky and says "Thank you for believing" always gets me now, especially because of Robin Williams passing.
I love how torn up Peter gets about Ruffio... when in the original source material Peter Pan kidnapped children to be soldiers in the pirate wars that HE started, and then MURDERS THEM WHEN THEY GET TOO OLD!
In the original book, Tink saved Peter by drinking medicine that Hook had poisoned. As she is dying Peter asks the children of the world if they believe in fairies and to clap their hands to prove their belief. Tink was actually dying here cos Peter said he didn’t believe so he had to clap to save her, not because she wanted the attention.
Hi Tim, I don't see anyone mentioning this and I'm about halfway into the movie, so I hope you get to read this! Rufio is the same person who voiced Zuko in Avatar The Last Airbender. Once you know it, you can't unhear Zuko :).
I never noticed that before, Jack is saying his father wouldn't save them and wouldn't try. Hook actually said he couldn't, which is true. Was Hook, in a way, defending Peter? Edit: Also, the kid playing Rufio also voiced Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Tinker Bell is a little _too_ nice and sensible for a character who's whole thing is frequent mood swings and getting nasty when jealous, but a good movie. Also, the beginning play may reference how Peter Pan's character is nearly always played by a woman in stage plays. Something to do with laws regarding minors working, which then turned into a tradition. They also figured that a man playing Peter would defeat the purpose of his character and that if he was played by a young boy he'd have to be taller than all the other kids. Avatar actually made a reference to this, when in the Fire Nation play Aang was played by a woman (Aang and Peter both like to glide around in the sky, after all.)
Yes, I've always felt that Tinkerbell was the sole problem in this movie, she's far too mild, and while making changes to characters isn't inherently a bad thing, it just didn't work for her. It feels like she was written that way for them to crowbar in a pointless romance subplot that was, frankly, just wasted time that could have been spent on other better stuff. All IMO of course. But the movie is still so great, I rewatch it over and over. Side note, another Peter Pan tradition is that Mr. Darling and Hook are played by the same actor. Jason Isaacs does this in in the 2003 Peter Pan adaptation and he is *marvelous*. That movie's Hook and Smee are tied in my heart with this movie's for the best Hook/Smee combo ever. Excellent acting and chemistry between the two in both cases, and wonderful character design and writing.
Fun Fact: The disloyal pirate that Hook kills here is played by Glen Close! 😳 Yes, you heard right. Cruella from the 1996 101 Dalmatians is that pirate!
Yah, the guy is like 47 and still looks like he’s in his late 20’s or early 30’s. He did a few cameos with Nostalgia Critic like the list of the top episodes of Avatar the Last Airbender. Nostalgia Critic made a funny comment on how Dante doesn’t age.
When Hook came and capture the kids, i got confused. How did he lift the kids's blankets without touching them? Where did the wind come from? Does he have magic powers? If his ship can fly in Peter pan 2, anything is possible 😂 I like that the movie showed us Peter pan's past, how he grow up and forgot his mother then was raised by Wendy. That was interresting! Giving more infos on this iconic character and developping him was a good idea.
This movie was such an intersting concept. An aged Peter forgot who he is, and has to remember to face his old enemy. It's like a kid-friendly Dark Knight Returns lol 33:50 I'm with you on this, I miss big practical sets.
When Robin Williams picked which kid was gonna be the next leader of the Lost Boys, it was kept a surprise from the kids, so Thud's reaction was genuine.
I don't know whether anybody has said this, but to answer your question at the beginning regarding the play; traditionally the role of Peter Pan has always been played by a female in stage productions 😊 Now you absolutely need to check out the live action Peter Pan ❤
FUN FACT: when Peter and Tinker Bell leave for Neverland the kissing couple on the bridge that ends up floating into the sky are actually George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
8:39 is interesting. Wendy feels Neverland returning to this world, implying *HOOK CAME FOR HER FIRST* as the window blows open, then Hook found something better… Jack and Maggie.
Traditionally, women would play Peter Pan in movies in movies (silent films) and stage adaptations. It wasn’t until Disney’s Peter Pan in the 50s that Peter was portrayed by a boy. So, the beginning scene of the school play actually follows a decades old tradition.
Bobby Driscoll in Disney's *Peter Pan* (1953) was certainly the first boy to play Peter in a full-length feature film, but child actor Freddie Bartholomew may have been the first boy ever to play the role, in a one-hour radio version on *Lux Radio Theatre* in 1936.
Fun fact: Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins played Hook and Smee as if they were gay, because that was the vibe they got from rehearsing their lines. They're "a couple of old queens". So if anyone ships them, you have the actors' full endorsement!
This was the first film I saw in the cinema and it still means a lot to me with deaths I found as an adult. I love Hooks last words "I want my mummy"...

I've always loved this movie. So cool seeing Wendy's point of view from an old age and Peter as a grown up. 👍🏼
One year before this, Dustin Hoffman and Charlie Korsmo were in Dick Tracy.
😎
It’s a criminally underrated movie and you MUST see it if you haven’t!!!
Couldn't have said it better
Fun fact: the airplane pilot is played by the same actor that plays Hook.
Fun Fact:
The disloyal pirate that Hook kills here is played by Glen Close!
😳
Yes, you heard right. Cruella from the 1996 101 Dalmatians is that pirate!
" Oh there you are Peter..." Always makes me cry.. all these years... Still..
36:15 that stealing second part always makes laugh 😂😂😂😂
Fun fact: the embroidered triangles on hooks hat are meant to foreshadow his death. They are meant to represent crocodile teeth
It awesome to see someone reacting to this who actually knows the story of Peter Pan.
Love that Dante Bosco (Prince Zuko, Avatar the Last Airbender) is in this as Rufio
Pretty sure ruffio was my first crush.
If his ship can fly in Peter pan 2, anything is possible 😂
I like that the movie showed us Peter pan's past, how he grow up and forgot his mother then was raised by Wendy. That was interresting! Giving more infos on this iconic character and developping him was a good idea.
This is the best rendition of Peter Pan..
This movie still has in my opinion, the best version of Captain Hook ever. Dustin Hoffman really nailed every element of his twisted personality.
Fun cameo: The couple in England that gets the secondhand pixie dust are George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
Rufio played by Dante Basco aka Zuko of the Fire Nation
This film is a favorite from my childhood. I saw this movie in the theater. It was a good experience. Great reaction!👍🏿
I would have loved to see this in theatre when I was a kid, I was born in 96 though so I caught it on VHS when I was about 5 🤣
36:14 He's stealing second! BANG!
That's like my favorite part!
This movie was such an intersting concept. An aged Peter forgot who he is, and has to remember to face his old enemy. It's like a kid-friendly Dark Knight Returns lol
33:50 I'm with you on this, I miss big practical sets.
Such a classic. Robin Williams is truly amazing in this role and all his others. Rip.
The pirate that Hook puts in the Boo Box is played by Glenn Close the actress, took me years to find that out. Unreal acting by her.
The pirate in the Boo- Box is actually Glenn Close
Fun fact, Rufio is played by Dante Basco (aka Prince Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender)
When Robin Williams picked which kid was gonna be the next leader of the Lost Boys, it was kept a surprise from the kids, so Thud's reaction was genuine.
I don't know whether anybody has said this, but to answer your question at the beginning regarding the play; traditionally the role of Peter Pan has always been played by a female in stage productions 😊
Now you absolutely need to check out the live action Peter Pan ❤
Definitely my favorite Peter Pan movie.
So many great memories with this movie. I still crow when ruffio says the you can lines.
this movie was/is amazing. the music and robin Williams acting in this.
FUN FACT: when Peter and Tinker Bell leave for Neverland the kissing couple on the bridge that ends up floating into the sky are actually George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
Rip Robin Williams, Bob Hoskins, Arther Malet and Laurel Cronin
That’s hilarious 🤣
They aren't queens
This was the first film I saw in the cinema and it still means a lot to me with deaths I found as an adult.
I love Hooks last words "I want my mummy"...
