This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood! I loved it so much that I even read the book 😂 I loved watching it with you, Tim! Can’t wait for more collabs🥳
I've seen this movie so many times. For example, I know all the words to the Dig It song (the full version) But I never noticed until now Mr. Sir's conversation with the chef about him purchasing the onions for the camp. They were all eating onions, essentially keeping the lizards away from biting them. But yes the lizards hated that they ate a bunch of the onions lol Also, fun fact the "Onions" they were eating whole were apples wrapped in an edible saran wrap-type material. When this movie came out I made the mistake of wanting to try eating a straight-up onion (before I found out they weren't eating actual onions) but I brought it to school to try. I wish I at least tried it at home and not at school, but luckily I always brought a bunch of gum to school with me 🤣🤣

Nathan Davis (Stanley's grandfather) was the father of the director Andrew Davis. Louis Sachar, the author of the book the movie was based on, played the man the Sam asked to remove his hat to show how well his onion juice worked on baldness.
You know how in grade school teachers seemed to have the same few movies they would put on for your class to watch? "Holes" was the only one I never minded for them to put on repeatedly year after year 🧡 Such a well-made film that never panders and always knows the right tone to entertain all ages! 👍
Our 8th grade class read this book as a group before the movie game out, and took a field trip to see it in theaters when it released. One of my favorite school memories tbh....the book was fantastic, and seeing the film just a few months after was a great way to cap things off.
@@turntsnaco824 my 3rd grade class did the exact same thing. And I was obsessed. I remember the website giving you a unique nickname based on your IP. I remember wanting to help doing yard work so I could dig lol.
In the movie, they imply that Armpit's nickname is because he doesn't wear deodorant. But I read somewhere that it was because he was stung by a bee on his armpit. X-Ray's nickname is because it's Pig Latin for his real name, Rex. Zig Zag's nickname is because of his wild hair. Magnet's nickname is because he's a thief ("My fingers are like magnets") Zero's nickname is because it's just short for Zeroni. I don't know the reason for Squid's nickname.
24:10 Remember his grandfather talking about the first Stanley Yelnats? The one who made a lot of money but lost it when he was robbed - by Kissing Kate Barlow? She didn't kiss him, she just robbed him and left him. He was half crazy when he was found - thought that the nurse dabbing at his head with cool clothes was an angel, so he married her.
I recommend the book. It’s so good as well as the movie. They really played the characters very well. I’m so happy you watched it. It’s so underrated. Plus this was my first intro of a story that jumps back to many flash backs for you to place the pieces together later.
Holes is a great movie. I loved the book as a kid, and Louis Sachar (the author) wrote the screenplay. Apparently, he had a lot of input in the film's production. Sachar also makes a brief appearance in the movie! He's Mr. Collingwood, the guy that Sam sells onion oil to help with his balding head.
The lizards that portray the Yellow Spotted Lizard in the movie were Bearded Dragons which are non-venomous and all of these lizards wore a non-toxic yellow paint on their backs to give the appearance of these venomous lizards from the book. Although the Yellow Spotted lizards are fictional, their are some venomous lizards living today, but the only venomous lizards consist of the Monitor and Komodo Dragons and especially the Beaded Lizards which live in the southwestern United States and Mexico, those species consist of the well-known Gila Monster and the Mexican Bearded Lizard.🦎🦎
Crazy to think this was literally a Disney movie cause when I saw the commercials and the advertisements for this movie 20 years ago they didn’t include nor mention it was from Disney. Of course the trailer/promo VO guy has done a lot of trailer narrations for Disney in the early-mid 2000’s so that was a clear takeaway. Anyways it’s interesting that it’s been almost 20 years since the movie came out and it’s easily not only the most underrated Disney film but also one of the best book film adaptations during the 2000’s and love the incredible cast consisting of Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Henry Winkler, Eartha Kitt and Patricia Arquette.
That short scene there Stanley shows the blisters on his hands while he's narrating the letter he's writing to his mother is actually from a deleted scene. X-Ray talks about how digging a hole is fun, and Stanley holds up his and and shows the blisters and says, "Fun? Does this look like fun?"
I remember reading the book in elementary school around the time the movie came out and watching it in class. Still just as good to this day. I always loved the scenes of Kate and Sam quoting Edgar Allen Poe poetry especially. They were adorable. 💕
18:36 The book clarifies - Sam can only enter the school if he works there ie fixes stuff or drops off deliveries. He can't go in there to learn anything at either day school or night school.
People wonder how Zero could have stolen the shoes when he was already at Camp Green Lake when Stanley arrived. In the book it says that Stanley's trial was postponed for six weeks because of baseball season. I love when the Warden asks Stanley to show her what's in the case and he says "Excuse me!"
In middle school, in class we read the Holes book first before watching the movie. The family relations, and everything made me love history all the more and made everything so much sense! 35:45 reason why the lizards didn't bite them is because of the stench of onions they ate ( if i recall correctly i think it was b/c it was stinky) 30:36 Yes, Zero is great (3x) grandson of Madame Zeroni.
31:45 Both the people at the camp and Zero had already mentioned that his real name was Hector Zeroni. They wouldn't have mentioned Madame Zeroni having a son who went to America if they weren't going to mention it again. Rule of storytelling - you don't bring something up unless it's going to be mentioned again.
In case you're not familiar with the book here's how each of the boys ended up at Camp Green Lake and how they got their names Stanely Yelnats AKA: Caveman, stealing a pair of shoes (A crime he did not commit) and due to his bulky size in the book and the fossil he finds at the camp. Hector Zeroni AKA: Zero stealing a pair of shoes and because he never spoke or did anything at the camp until Stanley arrives. Theodore Johnson AKA: Armpit, beating up two older boys over a bucket of popcorn at the movies and due to his vicious body odor. Rex Washburn AKA: X-Ray, selling bags of dry parsley and oregano for $50 to people who thought they were buying marijuana. Ricky AKA: Zigzag, setting off firecrackers at his school that triggered the alarms. Unknown how he got his nickname (either because his hair stuck out in different directions or because the firecrackers, he set off bounced in a zigzag pattern.) Jose AKA: Magnet, got caught trying to steal a puppy from a pet store that cost $1,000 (According to Squid) and because he steals without thinking. Alan AKA: Squid, because he beat up a police officer who confiscated his beer bottle and because he wanted to be a marine biologist (or because he farts in his sleep)
FUN FACT: At 14:00 the older guy with the blad head, that is the author of the book, if I remember correctly. Also I think the reason why he got 18 months for "stealing" a pair of shoes, was because it was from an athlete, and he was selling it for charity for a shelter for kids.
In the book, Stanley was overweight and gradually started losing weight at the camp. When he goes under the overturned boat, he is shocked. But in the movie adaptation, the temperatures truly did get so hot that they wouldn’t put a fat suit on Shia for his safety.
The movie doesn't explain it until later, and it's kinda glossed. The reason Stanley got 18 months for the Shoes, was cause they were owned by the Greatest Baseball Player of their day. The shoes were gonna be auctioned, and are explained as being so popular that just that sale alone would help renovate an Orphanage. The same one the Baseball Player grew up in.
Fun fact: the yellow spotted lizards are actually just bearded dragons they painted spots on. They’re totally harmless and actually pretty friendly! I had one as a pet! His name was Phoenix and every time I pet his head he gave me a little lick. RIP Phoenix ❤
I saw this movie in 2018, one of the best ones out there as I was engaged with the story the whole time. I love how Stanley and Zero even became friends after that cool encounter with one another at the camp.
Disney had no business adapting this book, but they did. It's not the typical Disney story. The book dealt with racism, child labor, death, genuine peril and danger that Disney movies at the time never touched in the early 2000s. But they did it anyway. And they stuck very close to the book. Of course it took artistic liberties, but the tone was the same.
I would disagree. Many Disney properties dealt with topics like those. The color of friendship comes to mind immediately, many of the shows had special episodes that dealt with predjudice behavior. Like that raven episode where she doesn’t get the job due to being black. Bullying, family abuse, etc.
My brothers and I dug a hole in our backyard for fun after we watched Holes. Our dad wasn't happy and made us put back in all the dirt we dug but our mom thought it was cute and took a picture of me and my siblings in and around the hole we dug.
So, fun fact: Armpit's nickname has a different origin in the books. In that continuity, he was stung in the armpit by a scorpion his first day out on the lake, and the rest of the D-Tent guys got sick of hearing about it, so that became his nickname. Of course, that was revealed in a book that came out after this movie did, so in the movie, he's named after his powerful body odor.
Watched this movie a lot as a kid so I have a special sort of nostalgia for it, also read the book in school. The movie is very close to the book with a few changes, that’s why it seems so well written. There’s a sequel/spin off book too that follows Armpit called Small Steps, haven’t read that one though.
This is one of my favorite films and I remember seeing it in theatres when it released and I actually saw the movie before I read the book. My favorite part about this film is that all the different timelines interconnect with each other even if there are a lot of coincidences lol and they did it so flawlessly that the cg doesn't really bother me. My brother and I would always imitate Mr. Sir's quotes in the film because they are so memorable especially the line where he askes if anything is wrong with his face. I'm sure some people have already said this in the comments but as a reptile lover, they used bearded dragons which are native to Australia and they used non toxic paint for the spots. Bearded dragons are extremely friendly and totally opposite of what these lizards are. They are basically dogs with scales in the sense that they enjoy human interaction well maybe not wild ones lol.
I think the disproportionate punishment at Camp Green Lake is Louis Sachar trying to capture a child's fearful cognition of the judicial system, particularly in rough neighborhoods where its flaws impact daily life the most.
"I dont know how to read, can you teach me?" Is such a heartbreaking statement to me. With all my heart id want to help, but I have no idea how to teach somebody to read. Im not confident that I could.
The moment the property’s ownership is transferred from the Walker family descendants to the state the drought ends and it starts to rain! It hadn’t rain since the day they shot Sam 😢
The funny thing is that it’s been said that sending kids to camps like this doesn’t correct behavior, sometimes it makes it worse and parents resorting to this just basically tells their kids they don’t want to deal with and understand why they act this way.
I want thank you both for this reaction. As a kid I never understood the film until I was older to appreciate the messages in it. Fun fact: the “onions” that Stanley and Hector ate are actually apples. They were covered in edible wrappers. 🧑🏼🦱🧑🏾🦱🕳☀️🦎💄🧅🍑🫂💰⛈
20:17 At that time, in whichever state it was that they were in, it was against the law for a black man to kiss a white woman. Hanging might not have been legal - the crowd that was burning down the school house was probably a lynch mob, meaning they'd grab Sam as soon as they could and hang him from the first tree they could find. Law wouldn't have been willing to do anything about it. Don't know how often that happened but it happened a lot. In the book the Sherrif called after her "The law will punish Sam, and God will punish you." But after Sam was killed not a single drop of rain fell on that land. So my own guess is that God is punishing the Walker family until the law steps in and punishes them - it didn't rain till they lost control completely over that land.
There are simply not enough Holes reaction videos on YT. I think there are 4 or 5, including this one. I get so excited every time a new one comes out.
In the book it's revealed Clyde Livingston had the same foot fungus as Trout Walker,(hence the fish smell and nickname) so I see it as getting another last laugh on him, since one of ingredients is onions it's implied Trout would've had that cleared up if he gave one of Sam's remedies a try(but didn't cos too proud and racist)and now not only has it been fixed after Trout's long gone but it's for a biracial guy too. Plus learning that Green Lake is gone for good and gonna be turned into a girl scouts camp will get back at him again as well for burning down Katherine's schoolhouse. The whole last few minutes of the movie is one big chain of 'get backs' for the Walkers in general.
Request pamphlet. "Rhinoceros" is based on a French play that became an American 1974 comedy film. Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel (The Producers) lead the cast of characters who are slowly becoming rhinos from some unexplained plague.
The scene with Trout and his men killing Sam was to show why the lake dried up. In the book, after Sam and Kate were caught kissing, a woman named Hattie Parker said to herself, "God's going to punish you" and when Kate tried to get help from the Sheriff, the sheriff told her, "The law's going to punish Sam, but God's going to punish you". Then after Sam, the author says it never rained on Camp Green Lake for the next hundred years and says "You be the judge. Who did God punish?"
I remember one of my teachers reading the book to the class, and once I found out it was available on Netflix back then, I decided to watch it right away instead of waiting to watch it in class
I don't know if this is true but I had a thought Since Pendenski isn't actually a doctor, and his comment to the other boys about how: "Oh, Lewis won't be returning." I recently had a horrible thought Did barf bag die because he didn't get the proper treatment? They heavily implied later that "there are plenty of holes to choose from" I really hope I'm wrong but it seems heavily implied Hopefully I'm reading that all wrong
@@lewissandras108 see i thought the same but they did buffer it by saying he was still in the hospital but it’s sad that he risked his life to get out of the camp
I first saw this movie in school with my friends. We spent the semester reading the book before watching the film. Then I watched it with my family in Spanish.
I adore this movie so much. Core memory of running full speed to turn up the tv every time the music video for the theme song came on Disney Channel lol. I was all in after reading the book for school, just listened again two days ago
I dont think there coincidences, but more the curse binding them together. Remember its been about a 100-200 years so it took over a 100-200 years for an opportunity to break the curse. I think it fits in rather nicely.
This was my absolute favorite childhood movie it’s so nostalgic to see it again. I think this is the only time where I liked the movie more than the book, it still holds up great.
It was nice watching the movie for the first time back when I was 11. My class required us to read the book first. While reading it, I always imagined a fictional side plot regarding a little more unrealistic stuff. The first part is a dream sequence that has Stanley running away from the camp, he falters, then starts to hallucinate. A talking anthropomorphic Yellow Spotted Lizard (Simply named "Yellow Spotted Lizard") dressed in Yoda-like attire appears and strictly advises him to go back to camp. Because his destiny awaits there. A few moments here and there in flashbacks show YellowSpottedLizard as a younger Lizard, possibly even being a pet to Madame Zeroni. Another has YellowSpottedLizard appear to Stanley and Hector at the top of the mountain to congratulate Stanley, telling him that the curse has finally been lifted, and helps them down the mountain with his mystic teleportation powers. All to help Stanley lift his family curse and get him his treasure.
I remember reading the book in fourth grade, then going on a school field trip to see the movie. It was a good day. Also, the song "Dig It" is such a bop.
This movie came out like 3 months after we read it as book project in 6th grade....super solid adaptation when it comes to that sort of thing like pretty damn spot on
I was 7 when this book came out and it quickly became my favorite book. The movie came out when I was 12 and I was so happy that they did a great job! Obviously like usual the book is better because it provides better foreshadowing since we’re able to have more time with the characters and the story is explained better but the movie is still great and the ending song is 🔥 I love the flashbacks and I love anything that has to do with Kate and Sam, they did an amazing job telling their tragic love story. I also love how Stanley carries Zero, Madame Zironi’s great great great grandson up the mountain and it reversed the Yelnats curse. 10/10 book, 10/10 movie. Love everything about this. Thank you for reacting to this and giving it the recognition it deserves! Louis Sachar is a great author

In my case, they've put Home Alone 😂
In the movie, they imply that Armpit's nickname is because he doesn't wear deodorant. But I read somewhere that it was because he was stung by a bee on his armpit. X-Ray's nickname is because it's Pig Latin for his real name, Rex. Zig Zag's nickname is because of his wild hair. Magnet's nickname is because he's a thief ("My fingers are like magnets") Zero's nickname is because it's just short for Zeroni. I don't know the reason for Squid's nickname.
When the warden shakes the water jug and says “Can ye hear the empty spaces?” “Yes! I can hear.” 🤣 Never gets old.
I love that scene. It always kills me. 😂
The only big difference I remember from the book is that Stanley started as overweight
6:32 Yeah but if you're digging holes all day out in the desert, the last thing you'd want is a hot shower.
Same! Even the teachers were gushing about the movie for weeks after it came out!
35:45 reason why the lizards didn't bite them is because of the stench of onions they ate ( if i recall correctly i think it was b/c it was stinky)
30:36 Yes, Zero is great (3x) grandson of Madame Zeroni.
"Once upon a time... there was a magical place where it never rained... The End."
In case you're not familiar with the book here's how each of the boys ended up at Camp Green Lake and how they got their names
Stanely Yelnats AKA: Caveman, stealing a pair of shoes (A crime he did not commit) and due to his bulky size in the book and the fossil he finds at the camp.
Unknown how he got his nickname (either because his hair stuck out in different directions or because the firecrackers, he set off bounced in a zigzag pattern.)
Jose AKA: Magnet, got caught trying to steal a puppy from a pet store that cost $1,000 (According to Squid) and because he steals without thinking.
Alan AKA: Squid, because he beat up a police officer who confiscated his beer bottle and because he wanted to be a marine biologist (or because he farts in his sleep)
Wasn't there also a kid named "Barfbag" who deliberately got himself bitten by the lizards to get away from the camp early?
“I can fix that…” Sam was the smoothest XD
Good point for Zero choking Zigzag then whacking Pendanski with a shovel for provoking him, a warning to D-Tent
Fun fact: the yellow spotted lizards are actually just bearded dragons they painted spots on. They’re totally harmless and actually pretty friendly! I had one as a pet! His name was Phoenix and every time I pet his head he gave me a little lick. RIP Phoenix ❤
my brother had one. blackbeard was his name
I saw this movie in 2018, one of the best ones out there as I was engaged with the story the whole time. I love how Stanley and Zero even became friends after that cool encounter with one another at the camp.
I mean a cold shower in a desert makes a little sense.
When you realize the counselor calls the boys by their government names, but calls Hector Zero...
The beautiful and charming Malbread graces us once again.
The lady is right. Hector Zoroni is Madame Zoroni descendant. Hence the same last name. So the curse got broken because of that.
Madame Zaroni is the same woman who voiced Yzma in "The Emperors' New Groove."
(At 31:30) aren't those the same onions that were used as repellent for the lizards?
Holes in my opinion is the most underrated live action Disney movie of all time
Stanley cup girls, be calling their kids Stanley. This movie aged well!
Caveman didn't ratted out on Squid on the sunflower seed, but they ratted out on him not digging
Man,Disney really said "Screw kids friendly content. Let's give them a movie about abuse. They will love it".
Holes is one of my favorite Westerns
I love both this movie and its book, and I'm glad you're reacting to it as well, they're not enough reactions to this movie in my opinion
The actress who plays Stanley's mom played the bus driver in Forrest Gump.
She played in men in black (1997) she was Edgars wife the one that gives him sugar water 😂
Fun Fact: the director was also the book's author. That's why the adaptation is so good. I love this movie.
The director was actually Andrew Davis but the book’s author, Louis Sachar, was also the screenwriter so the adaptation was indeed very good!
The real brilliance of this is that Kate's treasure was in the Stanley name.
They lost it before they ever dug the first hole.
There are simply not enough Holes reaction videos on YT. I think there are 4 or 5, including this one. I get so excited every time a new one comes out.
Same!
“Holes” is one of those movies I’ve only seen one time
20 years old. Still a classic.
More people need to react to this movie
35:32 timestamp of the meme! your welcome!
Eartha Kitt (Madame Zeroni) was such an amazing actress and singer.
RIP Ms. Kitt.
Shia Labeouf also appeared in the sci-fi action thriller I, Robot around this time. He had previously starred in the Disney family comedy Even Stevens
I actually like the song at the end of the movie that was sung by half of the cast. "Dig it up"
31:37 that lady played Catwoman in the 1966 live action batman series staring Adam West she also was the voice of Ezma from Emperor's New Groove
Wow what did I win I know absolutely nothing yay!
As a kid i had a CRAZY crush on sigourney weaver in this movie. I was always attracted to female villains.
37:46 You are right one thing. This is like “The Shawshank Redemption” and new edition for the kids
The “BYE BYE CAMP GREEN…” got me 😂
Fun fact: The actor who played Mr. Collingwood on 13:57 is Louis Sachar, the author of the Holes novel which this movie is based on.
I remember one of my teachers reading the book to the class, and once I found out it was available on Netflix back then, I decided to watch it right away instead of waiting to watch it in class
That opening scene where barfbag intentionally got bit by the snake just be sent home was so sad but I loved this movie and the book
I don't know if this is true but I had a thought
Since Pendenski isn't actually a doctor, and his comment to the other boys about how:
"Oh, Lewis won't be returning."
I recently had a horrible thought
Did barf bag die because he didn't get the proper treatment?
They heavily implied later that "there are plenty of holes to choose from"
I really hope I'm wrong but it seems heavily implied
Hopefully I'm reading that all wrong
@@lewissandras108 see i thought the same but they did buffer it by saying he was still in the hospital but it’s sad that he risked his life to get out of the camp
@@brithevirgo Oh good!
I was really worried
Glad I was wrong about that
@@lewissandras108 same! But your theory makes a lot of sense as well
Holes like Shawshank redemption for teens
I first saw this movie in school with my friends. We spent the semester reading the book before watching the film. Then I watched it with my family in Spanish.
Great video. I've totally never heard of holes before. This was actually my first time reacting to it with you Timmy.😄
Hope you enjoyed it!
we read this back in year 5, such a great book and an amazing movie adaptation. Glad you both enjoyed it.
6:53 Well the previous owner of that bed was barf bag. the stain is probably barf.
Shia LaBeouf’s prime in early movies! Love Holes. And Eartha Kitt was also a standout!
This was my absolute favorite childhood movie it’s so nostalgic to see it again. I think this is the only time where I liked the movie more than the book, it still holds up great.
This movie is 20 years old, just like me as of today!
That song, dig it, in the beginning is such a bop!!
I remember reading the book in fourth grade, then going on a school field trip to see the movie. It was a good day. Also, the song "Dig It" is such a bop.
I really love the Holes movie it is such a great classic.
This movie gives me hella flashbacks to when the teacher read the book to us in year 5.
36:45 you just figured that out now?! i knew that since zero first said his real name. and that was way earlier in the movie.
My whole fourth grade class read this book leading up to this movie release and then we took a field trip to see it. It didn't disappoint.
