What I gleaned from the movie was the deer is a metaphor for Blsck people. When the dad said he hated "deer" and _wanted them all dead,_ he was referring to Blsck people. The hit deer on the side of the road was like Chris' mother, who also died in a tragic accident on the side of a road. And Chris was powerless to do anything in both instances.
Male deer are called *bucks.* Blsck men used to be called _"Blask Bucks"_ by White supremacists and alike in the early/mid 20th century. A reference to this is in the movie _'A Soldier Story,'_ set in 1944 Tynan, Louisiana, centered around the events leading to the death of a black Army Sargeant, Sgt Waters. Waters quoted WT officers calling one of his PFC's, CJ Memphis, a "Strong, Blsck buck." Interestingly, through different events, _Waters was also found dead on the side of the road._
The "blsck buck" reference stereotyped Black men as powerful, sxually devient, excessively violent, uncouth, and wantonly attracted to WT women for generations. Today, in sports (notably in the NFL) Blsck men are called _"freaks of nature"_ or _"Beasts"_ by announcers and analysts, like the son mentioned at dinner table. More language that harks to the early 20th century "Blsck Buck" era; a more aggressive, primitive and wild "animal." Notice Blsck male suspects are also called by people, "animals" as a means of dehumanization.
*Rose, the daughter, is the hunter in the family.* Deer love to eat roses.🌹 The Father sent his _"Rose"_ as a trap, to be "eaten" by Buck. In this case, specifically, "Bucks" (Blsck men). There is a human sexual euphemism as well with "eating....Rose", which was hinted by the older lady asking the question to Rose, "Is it true?" (about Blsck men and sx.) You wouldn't ask a real deer how rose pedals taste, but that lady asked the "Rose" about what was it like to be "eaten" by a "Blsck buck."
As the 80s song by Poison said, _"every rose 🌹 has its thorn."_ Meaning, after something benevolent is a caveat or a painful, steep price. 🥀
And Chris killing the dad with the trophy head of a male buck was symbolic because Chris was going to be made a "trophy of man," as the male deer was already made a "trophy". And it's fitting the Father died because of both "trophies" getting revenge.
    Amazing writing by Jordan Peele!

the original ending that peele wanted was that it WAS the police that find chris at the end, and it ends with him in prison and rod visiting him. But peele thought it was too bleak for the time it was released and had it so that chris literally got out.
Also note that when the brother comes back to try to take chris out at the door, the whole movie he keeps obsessing over how he can take chris and can see ahead due to his fight training. Yet chris tricks him to keep using his leg to shut the door. It’s chris who is one step ahead

"When Chris is tied up in the Armitage’s basement, he pulls out the cotton stuffing from the armchair he is strapped into and uses it as an ear plug to keep him from falling under hypnosis. Initially, we connect Chris’ original trauma (when he allowed his mother to die in a hit and run while he sat at home and watched TV) to his ability to get free. We see in the many flashbacks to his mother’s death that Chris is largely paralyzed-except for a frantic clawing at the bedposts.
Flash-forwarding to Chris’ restraint in the basement after being tied down at the basement by the leather binds, the hypnosis backfires, as the saving grace of being hypnotized is that it sends him back into the moment of his mother’s death, which is what forces his hands to frantically claw-this time at the leather chair, revealing the cotton underneath. In resisting the family’s hypnosis, Chris picks and stuffs cotton into his ears, a racial irony that touches on the notable role that cotton picking played in the enslavement of black people. As Chris’ arms and feet are bound, much like slaves were shackled, this imagery of literally picking cotton to drown out the noise of the oppressor subverts this historical trope and is how Chris manages to survive.
The connection to cotton picking gives the movie a much deeper historical and racial relevance that ties the experience of African Americans to Chris. The deeply-embedded trauma of being the descendants of slaves is inherent in all African Americans. That it is what ultimately comes to save Chris’ life is an allegory that many African Americans can appreciate as they struggle with present-day conditions. Perhaps this might be Keele’s way of suggesting that white people cannot keep African Americans trapped in their historical trauma and that it is the very fact of that trauma that will ultimately liberate descendants of this traumatic history. Thus, plugging his ears with the cotton becomes symbolic of how the memory of past enslavement becomes protection against re-enslavement."

The same goes for sexism, very few sexists hate female bodies (to the contrary), but they don’t respect women as individuals.

Just FYI, hypnosis is an actual, scientifically proven thing. They even think they've narrowed down specific genes that are connected to being more easily hypnotized (which should suggest how accepted the existence of hypnosis is). It doesn't work quite the way movies typically portray, because drama's more fun than reality and all. So you can't be hypnotized into commiting murder or offing yourself or something awful like that. But you can certainly be put into a hypnotic state where you might engage in suggested benign behaviors (barking like a dog, or something, or honestly answering questions you would normally lie about). You might also make short term changes in your life (quitting smoking, or eating less) but the question is whether those changes are longterm and if they are, is it the hypnosis or placebo? So, basically, hypnosis is totally a thing, but its therapeutic usefulness is debated. It's mostly a parlor trick that might help some people make positive life changes.

Uhh, I'm a little horrified here 😅 in order for scientists to actually know whether a person can be hypnotized to commit murder or suicide, wouldn't they have to hypnotize someone and ask them to do those things?? That sounds like some real sketchy "science" from where I'm sitting 🤣👀

@@sorchamiana If you think THAT'S unethical, then you must not know much about the history of ethical standards in science. What scientists have done in the name of advancing technological progress is genuinely terrifying. Telling someone under hypnosis to kill someone just to see if they would doesn't even rate on the scale, unfortunately.

Jordan Peele has two other horror movies. US which is decent, and NOPE which is absolutely amazing. Both are recommended, but my personal opinion is NOPE is a can't miss horror film. Also stars Daniel Kaluuya plus Keke Palmer and co starring Keith David. Great cast and great film.

The only small part for me unacounted for was a reaction of either Chris or his gf after he found all the pictures of the other guys. It was brushed aside so quick without being mentioned from either one. She had to have known what he found just now.

Hello Justine & Jane!😊 I saved this film for later as it is a dark film!😱 Blumhouse has some good horror films!🏆 "Us" (2019) is the other Jordan Peele horror film from this time. Another fun Blumhouse horror film is "M3GAN" (2022). The popular doll film getting a sequel in 2025. The girlfriend in this film, Allison Williams stars in that film. Great reactions to this crazy film, Guys!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I love the scene where the woman at the party is feeling Chris's arm and wondering how he is in bed. She asks the feeble old guy in the wheelchair what he thinks of Chris and the guy nods and smiles, clearly expressing his approval to be the new occupant of Chris's body.
