"Ok writers, we need to figure out a way to get Joel and Ellie a car." "What if we do it by creating the saddest love story of all time?" "Ok yeah, that works."
It's also the story to get that letter to Joel to show him the stakes of the story. But damn that was a good story
the episode is sad af but I think they were so much happier than 99% people in this scenario, even some people in our reality lol they had a good life together
Well that's not quite correct. In the game, Bill helped Joel (and Ellie) get parts to build a car. Along the way found Frank's remains and a note. Apparently Frank left due to irreconcilable differences. At the end of the "adventure", Joel and Ellie rode off in the same blue/white truck. What the creator of the game story decided is "what if" Bill and Frank survived their differences and worked it out? Then we have a love story. So think it's an alternate ending (or alternate universe) for Bill and Frank. Bottom line is the result is the same - Joe and Ellie drove off in the same truck.
Gay
except they didn’t need to figure anything out because that was already wrote and that allowed them to express more freedom. pov you’re talking out your ass
Just wanna say.. thank you guys so much for putting this on RUclips!
Absolutely
And not keeping it behind a paywall.
Agreed! Been waiting for this for so long! 😊 Ty so much!
George editing it the real mvp
Frank and Bill just casually having a mountain of fancy wines to drink for like 20 years together.
Goals
23:11 Troy and Ashley are touchy about this. They didn’t just voice the characters, they also acted out all the scenes. Motion, face, and voice capture together are called performance capture. It’s done on a soundstage, and compared to voice exclusively, everyone in the scene does it together, and props are included. On top of that, Troy and Ashley were free to improv a ton of their characters. A lot of what people love about Ellie was made up by Ashley. Ellie was written very differently originally.
Everyone knows this, shut the hell up. You're not needed.
I'm in this! I'm one of the skinny dirty people in the Boston QZ. Being a part of this was too much fun. I'm the blurry guy in the foreground in the black and tan hat at 16:01, among other places.
That's so cool! What a neat extra role.
Nice
How did you escape? Did you sneak out through the mall or did you pay someone at the gate?
Yeah, anyone from Boston can be skinny and dirty, you won't fool us.
Hello blurry guy!
Are you blurry in real life or that was just "movie magic"?
In game Frank is already dead, doing himself in. There was hints of the relationship. The narative choice was giving a letter to Bill telling him Frank was dead. The quest was to retrive a battery from a school. Bill was alive at the end of the encounter.
Bill knew Frank was dead, they find him hanging. The note is from Frank to Bill ans just tells him how much Frank hates Bill.
@@jonttulthere was far more to it than “I hate you.” It was clear they had a relationship.
It feels like the creators actually had a backstory for the that they couldn't include in a game because it is a game and they did it here.
I feel like Frank left Bill after he didn't want to fix the buildings in town that Frank liked. In the game, they just never made up.
also, bill and frank was in a relationship, but fell apart somewhere down the line. bill and joel wasn't friends like in the show because bill didn't allow frank and him to have friends coz bill doesn't trust anyone and want to keep frank safe and maybe that's one of the reason why they broke up and why frank hated bill so much as he stated in his suicide letter to bill.
The game narrative shows how love can turn into hate and how you can easily lose your loved ones in the world of tlou. It shows to joel what he could end up if he doesn't stop seeing the world full of hate and pain, after losing sarah and tess. and also opens up a way for joel and ellie's relationship to be more than just joel doing a job for the fireflies.
The show also accomplish this narrative but in a diff way, like the letter from bill to joel. also, they show joel how love can be so precious, and in this world full of hate, pain, and suffering love can still persevere, and it's still possible to grow old with someone and die happy.
We all had to cry with this show. The franchise has some of the most beautiful and heart-rending stories we can imagine, and the actors they chose are just amazing.
The girl who played the daughter is Thandi Newton's kid and she's clearly her mother's daughter it's a small but vital role on the series but she killed it.
"Does puppy know?"
Puppy ABSOLUTELY knows! Dogs are some of the best judges of "Dude, you are okay?" I get migraines fairly regularly, my dog is right next to me minutes before I get one. Its creepy and relieving at the same time.
@dnllrnt it's due to their sense of smell, actually. The same happens with heart attacks ,strokes, etc.
They can literally smell you are having an issue biologically.
@@daytrippera we did not deserved dogs
Dogs know a bunch of stuff, they can even smell some types of cancer.
Not every dog, but those that do are to be cherished. I've had both haha
Which is why when you see a service dog in public, DO NOT MESS WITH IT! My friend would get seizures and they would come on suddenly, so she had a dog to alert her when it would happen so she could sit down and not just fall face first on the ground and crack her head. When she sits or lies down, the dog would lay over top of her to help subdue her. But anyway, one time someone had distracted the dog and because the dog became distracted it didn’t notice a seizure coming and she fell suddenly, luckily it was in the grass, but if it had been concrete or hard floor, it could have severely injured or killed her. Pisses me off when people mess with service dogs, they are with that person for a reason, they’re not just a pet, they have a job.
It’s funny watching that first episode back now, because the intro scene with John Hannah is SO GOOD, but I just watched a video with Troy Baker on Gamology breaking down the show, and he said that was the very last thing that was filmed for season one, and basically a last minute decision to write/film it, and yet it’s so perfect as a prologue.
A plausible explanation of how humans could be turned into "zombies" was definitely a benefit to the show's credibility.
@@CineRamWell, a plausible “sounding” explanation. Beyond a level of pop science facts about the “mind controlled” ants it just isn’t. It’s still a great, interesting way to explain “not zombies” (since some fans hate them being called Zombies even if they fit the description) and it bothers to try and sound realistic more than something like gesturing at “it’s like rabies”. But just for clarity it’s no more of a reason to think it could actually happen than any of the other versions.
I'm still mad he didn't say "Jupiter's cock" at least once in the prologue.
I'm still very disappointed John Hannah didn't say Jupiter's c*ck at least one time during the interview.
Right!! I was like Hey!! I know that guy!!! Lol.
I'm used to seeing John Hannah as a bit of a goofball, like in "The Mummy" movies. It's great to see him as a scientist...one who, incidentally, poses a very plausible explanation for how human zombies might come about. Great stuff, I've watched his bit several times.
Most humans would die of medical issues before zombies anyway. All the medications people would be forced to go cold turkey on would harm so many. All the medical procedures that couldn't be done. No antibiotics or vaccines. No dentist, eye doctor, glasses would break & contacts would run out. A simple sinus infection can spread to your brain & kill you. I had an endoscopy done a few months ago & the nurse said on a normal day they do over 30 people lol
You can see him as a goofy scientist in Agents of SHIELD
I liked him in Spartacus series.
His role in Spartacus shows his range, Batiatus! Batiatus!
@@Ashenascendedamazing 1st season and prequel! Best performance I’ve ever seen
Bill and Frank - relationship goals… I remember thinking it was one of the best bits of TV I’d ever seen.
I remember conservatives having a sissy fit on this episode
It got to me a bit, just thinking about having that much love reciprocated in real life.
Among the best episodes of television ever made.
@@ToMPaSHKoV relax now haha
In the game you just meet a much more bitter Bill. You find Frank already dead and it appears that he has hung himself. You find different things, note and stuff that loosely tell their story. Bill says Frank was his partner, but the notes hint that they were actually a couple. They had had a fight and Frank had left, but was bitten while he was gone.
Yeah in the game Bill is alive and together youse set out to find Frank who had left. Bills always jawing back and forth with Ellie in the game like an immature man-child. With the note Frank leaves behind he moreso comedically infers that he'd rather check out then to deal with him anymore as a parting burn. And then the dirty mag is kind of the reveal that they weren't just partners they were actually "partners" as in bitter estranged lovers. The show took it in a much more serious tone and took those minor characters and knocked it out of the park
The implication was that when Bill and Frank had that argument about making the neighborhood look better and having friends over in the game, Bill shut Frank down and Frank got more and more bitter about it as time went on, which affected Bill too and they were deeply unhappy at the end. I like the direction the TV show took with the characters.
@@mhan00 yeah, at the time this game was released there was a trend with television programs having preppers and/or people living off the grid and it wasn't uncommon to see guys in healthy competition for setups. Like all of those basebuilding simulation games but IRL. AND to be fair he wasnt stereotypically artsy and kind of a degenerate. Opposites still attract I guess, and the magazine reveal was like an - Uh... Oh! Moment for me 😂
Each of the Bills makes perfect sense to the Joel portrayed in each medium.
In the game, Joel is jaded but not completely gone.
Joel was the muscle but Tess was the one everyone was afraid of (Remember Malik?)
Joel still had the capacity to care; he cared for Tess ("There is enough here that you must feel some kind of obligation to me"). Because he still had the capacity to care, Bill was the narrative "warning". The Old Curmudgeon to show the player what Joel _could_ become. It was a narrative warning because Joel wasn't there yet. Joel had lived first for Sarah, then for Tommy, and then Tess, before finding a reason to continue in Ellie. (Which is why he says "you _keep_ finding something to fight for". )
In the show, Joel is already the Old Curmudgeon. He is already hard and gone, he has lost the capacity to care. Statements like: "I never asked you to feel the way I felt" and "caring for someone is good for one thing - getting you killed" show he wasn't the same as game Joel. Keeping Bill as the same wouldn't make narrative sense. There *is* a narrative need to show that even after reaching that point, there is the capacity to climb out through love.
This is again displayed in the difference in ending. The whole: "If you just keep going, you'll find something new to fight for" - indicates that the finding is an eventual thing sometime in the future after going for a while without anything, a contrast to the game which was keep finding as in sequentially.
So changing Bill makes perfect sense.
fun fact - if you go back and rewatch the first episode, you'll see all the times that joel and sarah narrowly escaped getting infected. since it originated at a flour factory, it was a blessing that sarah couldnt make joel birthday pancakes and that none of them ate any of the biscuits from their neighbor 😅
1:11:39 There are actually only two or three set points where Ellie will break out her pun book. If you’re rushing through, she won’t get the chance. If you are scavenging she’ll take the book out and read one. If you don’t react, she stops reading out loud. If she’s reading and you move on anyway, she puts it away early. Not appreciating Ellie’s puns is one of those cardinal sins during let’s plays.
The Last of Us does an exceptional job of making what is essentially an escorted character feel like a real, natural person. Ellie investigates the environment too, entertains herself when safe, asks questions, etc. You can get (or miss out on) a massive treasure trove of character development by taking your time, watching, and interacting with Ellie in ways otherwise irrelevant to the gameplay. Almost all of these details and interactions were improv by Ashley Johnson while watching someone play during development. She’ll even give Joel the stink eye if you keep shining your flashlight in her face, and she’ll make snarky comments about taking too long, sometimes specific to the current location, danger level, her personal comfort or irritation, etc.
I liked when she'd say. "so...i notice you're standing there doing nothing"
@@TukaihaHithlec I own both of the books!
Nick Offerman's Dad was my geography teacher, homeroom tacher, and bus driver in Minooka Illinois. Nick was quite a bit younger than me but he would ride my bus home being that his Dad Ric was going the same way.
I still marvel at the writers' ability to introduce a new character at the beginning of an episode, then in the space of an hour, make you care so much about them that you are gutted by what happens to them at the end. Well done!!
Simone suffering while George laughs with excitement is my spiritual animal
lol, I was interested in Georges question: "Can human Ash be used for anything" I was surprised to hear this result:
Vinyl Records: Ashes can be pressed into vinyl records, preserving the memory of a loved one through music or recorded messages.
Cool
Also artificial diamonds
Not human ash but hardwood ash is a source of Lye for making soap.
Surprising they noticed that Pedro Pascal plays a prominent character in Star Wars (Mandalorian), but didn't remember another great Star Wars show (Andor) where a use for human ashes plays an important role...
@bitbyterjr I believe it's the fat.
Ash can be used as a fertilizer, which is great for the soil. It can also be used in the production of soap and pottery.
Yes, but it is highly acidic. Some lime can be used to counter that effect.
This is the greatest adaptation to a video game I’ve ever watched. It’s everything. It adds when it has do but doesn’t mess around with plot, story. Honestly, I think this is a perfect adaptation.
It helped a LOT that TLOU both has strong writing to start from, and maybe more so that it’s a very narrative focused game with a structure that isn’t as far from a show as most games. It seems like a pretty ideal choice to adapt, but they really did nail the changes they made as well.
@@RocketSurgn_ Ι think other stories were strong as well but the problem was the creators of the shows. They screwed up the original material to try to make it ''their own'' which is stupid cause why do you take the material in the first place and not make something completely from the beginning to have as your own. So i think what actually helped was the creator of the game was involved in the show and the other co creator of the series had actual respect for the source material.
12:27 It helps that TLoU was very cinematic to begin with and the creator of the game was heavily involved in the production of the show. And Craig Mazin was a big fan of the game and didn’t want to change it
In the game the bill and frank scenario plays out a lot differently. In the game the relationship is implied but also is shown that bill didn't allow them to actually get into a real relationship. The game version showed Joel the dangers that he'd become bill, angry, bitter, and alone, if he didn't open his heart. Show version showed Joel the beauty and possibilities if he opens his heart
Her acting was already good in GoT, but i swear i have never seen someone act more natural than her (future campfire scenes etc etc. just fantastic
Sadly she's getting a lot of hate on social media for her looks
@@daurydavis3983People are weird. She's a kid, ffs. And she's good at her job.
@@daurydavis3983Hate, on social media?? I mean, that’s pretty much all it is. I’m quite convinced it’s ruining us (along with the 24 hour news cycle).
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 There are comments on this video already that claim Bella and Pedro "have no chemistry" (wtf?!) among other criticisms following the extremely tiresome and predictable route of anti-snowflake snowflakes. I'd list 'em, but I'd probably fall asleep typing it out.
Agreed, Bella is absolutely phenomenal.
I played the game when it first came out.. then watched this show about a dozen times (mainly reactions, but at least 3x myself) then went and played through the game again about a month ago.. I knew they followed the story amazingly and even added a lot of the games moments word for word, scene for scene.. but I underestimated how much. SO much of the game is in this show.
Poor Simone was crying before Frank even said he was ready to die!
That is such a well behaved kitty. Just sits on your lap the entire episode!
Free warm legs to lie on, and periodic head scritches. Ideal.
The Last of Us is on PC now if you’re interested. It launched in a bad state but I think it’s fixed now. Highly recommend
It's running MUCH better than at launch. I definitely recommend it for anyone that is PC-only.
It launched in New Jersey?
It launched fine the graphics were just broken in certain areas like the Pittsburgh hotel ballroom.
1:09:38 In the game, Bill kept Frank a secret. By the time Joel reaches Bill’s town, Frank is already gone. This section of the story is the biggest difference between the show and the game. Game Bill is essentially the way this Bill is at the beginning of the episode. Having a paranoid but capable loner survivalist in the group makes for good gameplay (The early game has a sketchy difficulty curve, so the benefit of Bill and all of his weapons is the biggest jump in ability you ever get).
While I love what they did here, the biggest letdown of the show is entirely missing out on Joel being stuck between the amusing animosity that Bill and Ellie have for each other. Seeing their first interaction was what finally led me to buy the game.
*_Bill:_* (After Joel stops Ellie from beating him with a metal pipe.) “You come into my house, you set off all my traps, you damn near break my shootin’ arm…! Who the fuck is this little punk and what’s she doin’ here?”
*_Ellie:_* (In Bill’s face.) *”I* am none of your goddamn business, and we’re *here* because you owe Joel some favours, and you can *start* by taking *these* off!” (Waving around handcuffs on one wrist.)
*_Bill:_* (Turning around to sharpen his machete.) “I ‘owe Joel some favours’, is this some kind of a joke?”
*_Joel:_* (Shocked by how badly Bill and Ellie are already getting along.) “I’ll cut to the chase - I need a car.”
*_Bill:_* (Looking at Joel, stunned.) “Oh, it is a joke. _Joel needs a car._ Well, if I had one that works, which I sure as hell don’t, what makes you think I’d just give it to you? Huh?? Yeah, sure Joel, take my car! Take all my food too while you’re at it.”
*_Ellie:_* (Sauntering up.) “By the looks of it, you could lose some of that food.”
*_Bill:_* (Pointing his machete in Ellie’s face.) “You listen to me, you little *shit-“*
*_Ellie:_* (Entirely unintimidated and too impatient to hear the whole threat.) “No, *fuck you!* You handcuffed me to the-!” (Pulled away by Joel in a desperate attempt to stop Bill and Ellie from killing each other.)
Yeah. In the game i don't think Joel and Tess ever went to Lincoln. They'd meet Bill somewhere neutral and trade.
What I think is incredible is that they took a relationship that is barely referred to in a fleeting moment in the game and fleshed out that backstory into one of the greatest episodes of TV ever with episode 3.
On The Nature Of Daylight (Bill and Frank's episode) is on my going for walk playlist. So I listen to it nearly everyday. It was also used really well in Arrival.
"How's the show compared to the game?"
No bad changes. Every change was either cosmetic or served it's purpose better than a carbon copy of the same scene would've. Brilliant adaptation
The game is better.
@@Stefanbf2 The game is only better because its longer and more fleshed out. You can get so much in a tv episode.
Agreed
@@rayjones2606 exactly that's why i never appreciate these shows, they create nothing only detract from existing content that's already good and serves it purpose.
I think both are great. Prefer the game though.
In the game you only ever spend time with Bill who is shown to be paranoid and angry. At the end of his set of "missions" he finds the body of Frank who got infected while trying to leave Bill. Bill also only calls him his partner but it's heavily implied that they were together
I cannot tell you the excitement I just experienced seeing this upload. Yeeessss! 😭😭
38:05 Back when this game came out, you’d be shocked how many people watched Ellie get her throat ripped out by infected and die, just to be confused and say “But I thought she was immune?”
Best part of the intro interview at the start is that this cordiceps fungus actually exists and behaves exactly as described
15:31 Pretty sure human ash can be used to make synthetic crystals. I remember hearing that as an alternative to burials, urns, or scattering, people can be cremated and have their remains turned into diamonds and put in jewelry. It’s a way to literally keep a loved one with you after they pass, as well as diamonds not mined by slaves.
One of the most applauded video games of all time, in terms of writing, direction, and story development now adapted very well for the small screen. Enjoy the ride!
The fact that Sarah didn't end up making pancakes is what saved Joel at the very beginning...
“I wanna see an even bigger one, like several people fused into one”
Well George, if they introduce the Rat King into future seasons you’ll get your wish.
I loved this show, we can argue back and forth about whether it's a perfect adaptation or whatever, but at the end of the day it was attempting to condense the whole game down into a handful of hours that could fit into an episodic format, while also communicating the spirit, themes, and narrative to an audience consisting of mostly your literal dad who has never heard of the last of us in his life, and while remaining faithful enough and have enough insider moments toremain enjoyable for longtime fans. that's a big demand, and as far as i'm concerned they smashed it out of the fucking park, i was able to watch this with my parents and they finally got to enjoy, as much as i do, this story that i never would have been able to share with them otherwise, and i really appreciate that
Welp. Time to watch Simone die of dehydration from crying.
I was thinking: Poor plushy, she's gonna squeeze that thing to death LoL
they changed the spread method from the game. In the game the fungus spreads by spores, but in the show it spreads by tendrils from the mouth.
Have to say I must be getting old but for a Saturday night I was super happy to see this . One of my fav series being watched by you guys. Yay.
I love how many times they avoid being infected through grains in the first episode. From biscuits, to no pancake mix, to forgetting the cake, to eating cookies.
The photoshop of Simone as Bella Ramsey's character is excellent 😄

@PeverellTheThird yes!
and r.i.p. Lance.....
The 3rd episode of The Last of Us Season 1 is arguably one of the best episodes of television made in the past decade or two. I started crying halfway through and was a blubbering mess when Bill started crying on the couch. The "I'm old and you were my purpose" line destroyed me.
In the game they need masks to travel where the spores are, but for the show the opted to remove that requirement as the main actors would be in masks for over half the movie :P But lore wise masks are required to go through the spores.
Yup, who would watch a show where Pedro Pascal is always wearing a mask?
I’m so glad you guys got around to the Last of Us. It’s such a great show. Episodes 3 and 8 are my top 2 favorites.
Season 1 was filmed in Alberta, season 2 was filmed in BC. They had a whole street in Nanaimo blocked off for a month. I can't wait to see those scenes!
It was so fun to see places in Calgary all apocalypsed. I was supposed to be an extra because I have the right age truck. But I was away so I couldn’t do it.
The only episode of this series that actually moved me was the fifth episode with Henry and Sam. Anyone who has ever had to look out for younger siblings knows how hard it would be to do what Henry did. Aging Sam down and making him deaf hit even harder. Both actors did a fantastic job.
When Sara dies at the start of the game, it was one of those few moments I had to put the controller down and take a break.
To get away from that dark part:
A mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender says, “Get out! We don’t serve your kind here.” Mushroom says, “Why not? I’m a fun guy.”
I’m not proud of that either.

YAAAASS! Thank you both for putting the Patreon reactions on here.
The bitter rebel leader lady is Melanie Lynsky - amazing actress. I loved seeing her play a strongwoman who has stepped waaay across the line due to revenge.
It was Roger Ebert who infamously said video games are not and never will be art.
Well, he was wrong about more than a few things in his life.
Later in his life, Ebert was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. He continued doing film reviews to the day he died, minus a jaw.
Yeah, but he eventually modified his opinions.
Ebert also gave bad reviews to Gladiator, Fight Club, and Raising Arizona. I loved the man, but he had some really bad takes in his career lol.
It's funny that now that games *are* widely considered art, there's a small (but ever growing) subsection of gamers that actually don't want games to be art nor to have any deeper meanings.
It is an excellent series and episode 3 is especially a highlight. Noticing that it hits you, too, like so many people. Nickels worth of free and unsolicited advice: it is a long march to the grave for most of us, and it is much more difficult alone. Take it from an old silverback, you can find a mate in your 30s and 40s or even 50s, the probability goes down each decade (not to mention it eventually becomes like trying to find a good toy in a box of broken ones). If you don't have a partner, do what it takes to put yourself in a position to maximize your opportunities or learn the sting of regret in later life.
Mold is a type of fungus, but they have some distinct characteristics. Reproduction: Mold reproduces by releasing spores into the air, while fungi can reproduce by sending out hyphae. A hypha is a long, branching, filamentous structure of a fungus, oomycete, or actinobacterium. In most fungi, hyphae are the main mode of vegetative growth, collectively called mycelium
I have a theory on why Ellie is immune: Cordiceps knows she's already fun gal. 😁
In my childhood geography class, I'd marvel at the vast tundras of Siberia, Yukon, and so on. Always wondered what use all that wilderness could be to people. 15:02 George's idea makes it all so clear now!
Missed opportunity for Simone to say she recognises Pedro from Buffy, even if he only had like 3 minutes of screen time lol
Oh good catch, I always forget he shows up in that
This is one of the best adaptions from one medium to another overall, and by far the best game adaption in my opinion. Any changes they made served the story and not just some weird whim of an exec or writer. Like as both of you observed is that spores would probably be an airborne threat as well as a contact one; in the game if you were in an area overrun with spores you had to have a breather mask, but it kinda gamey so in the show they just remove that part of the threat and enhance it in other ways which make threatening just not as pervasive. Since the inception of zombie/horror it has really always been about how peopel deal with the adverse circumstances, the outbreak could be replaced with anything, like in Fallout it a nuclear apocalypse but the people are what it is about. Bill and Frank were really character from teh game but you only meet Bill and they augmented their story. The second act of the game is meeting Bill but you get an inkling of Bill and Frank's relationship from a note you find in the game. It is better by far than tge game and they deserved every award they got for episode 3. (Edit: The whole game is maybe 20hrs if you are a thorough player so teh show is the first game., season 2 is probably gonna be two parts as there is far more to it. Even after seeing teh show, highly recommend playing the game; Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker had career making performances and it is different enough to be worth it.)
Some folks consider TLOU one of the best game of all time, I like to put the caveat they are the best cinematically structured games of all time. There are plenty of great games that would make horrible movies. Like that Minecraft movie is probably going to be bad because it doesn't make sense to force a narrative onto what is really a free-form creation engine. Game like TLOU are prefect for it and I hope that Amazon or whoever has the right to it manage to make a really good Mass Effect show, that could be excellent if they don;t just try to adapt the game but maybe adapt the prequel novel "ME: Revelation" which has the actually does a great job of telling Anderson's story and also setting up Saren as well the whole Reaper mystery.
Ash, even the ash from human remains can probably be used to enrich soil, just like volcanic ash. Like high concentrations that happen immediately after an volcano goes off is toxic but over time the ash enriches the soil when the toxicity dissipates. It is good for some crops not all but I would say yes, the QZ leadership almost certainly use the ash and human waste they collect to augment the soil used to grow food inside their settlement because they can't really have big fields outside the walls of the place.
I had to google. Human ash has a very high pH level, and extreme amounts of sodium, both of which are very harmful to plants and inhibit growth. So use as fertilizer or in compost/potting soil is contraindicated. I did find a site that has kits with a soil mix that will mitigate that so if you want to, for instance, put your person's ashes in the hole of a seedling tree or something, this kit will make it so they don't kill the tree.
Murray Bartlett, who played Frank, was nominated for an Emmy for this part. That Emmy went to Nick Offerman.
Once again Thank you George for taking the time to make youtube edits of previous patreon exclusive content. Still hoping Chernobyl gets done soon. been wanting to see that reaction since I discovered the channel.
Yes, George is my hero! I'm so glad he brought up the book for World War Z and how they dealt with crime and making examples out of people. Shame and humiliation aka "putting a person's dirty laundry out for all to see" is a powerful message especially when applied to everyone in the community equally. The same examples are shown in Starship Troopers, both when Rico messes up and when the trial and execution are shown on all channels. In terms of the show I thought they got real close to the game and all the changes were for the right reasons and added to the story and characters. I so wish other shows/movies would follow this example when translating a game to video media.
Episode 3 was so incredibly beautiful and heartfelt, I'm so glad the showrunners made that slight alteration to Bill and Frank's story.
The casting in this is so perfect. It looks virtually identical.
Interestingly, ash can be used for fertilizer, pest control, and to make soap.
Bill and Frank's DIY wedding ceremony is even more poignant when you consider that the world ended before gay marriage was legal in Massachusetts (the first US state to make it legal).
Ash isn’t useless. It’s actually one of the most useful substances on earth. It can be made into lye, potash, and fertilizer (carbon).
And "diamonds".
You can pay to have a memorial diamond created now.
Thanks for the multi-episode format! This show is perfect for binge-watching!
I’m glad ya’ll put this on youtube. I have been looking forward to your take on this show. And I’m also looking forward to your Arcane season 2.
(Joel reloading in the museum)
Yep! Been there before friend-o. Luckily for Joel he didn't have to chuck his controller across the living room after getting caught.
Fungi cell walls are composed of Chitin - The same material that makes up crab and lobster shells.
Engineers at the University of Houston are using chitin and 3D printing techniques to produce high-impact multilayered coatings that can protect soldiers against bullets, lasers, toxic gas and other dangers.
So it is logical that the more growth the infected have, the more hits or bullets it takes to bring them down.
This is the absolute BEST video game adaptation I've seen, and I've seen a lot. I highly recommend watching all the behind the scenes bits to get some pretty cool information about how they filmed it - but my biggest recommendation is The Last of Us podcast done by HBO and hosted by Troy Baker, the OG voice of Joel and on-screen James in episode 8. He has in-depth interviews with Neil Druckman (game writer/creator) and Craig Mazin (producer/director of Chernobyl) that explain the thought processes which led to what things were changed and what things were kept from the game, plus interviews with some of the actors and effects people about their takes on the various shots they liked the most, and why.
PS - Yes, you fight many of those "big guys" (Bloaters) in the game.
The talk show opening is still one of my favorite scenes of all time. So damn chilling the way it's broken down
First game is incredible. Second is even better. I STRONGLY suggest you try playing them both. One really small knit pick is how the soldier spoke before he shot Joel and Sarah. In the game, he clearly was conflicted and reluctantly agreed to the orders over the walkie. In the show, he seems a bit more okay with gunning them down.
Wow, George predicting The Rat King. Impressive.
Perfect prediction.
Funny that you referenced "Frank & beans," because the actor that played Bill in the game was the brother yelling "frank & beans" in There's Something about Mary. Lol
12:20 "Just do exactly what the video game did, that's why it's successful. Stop trying to make it your own thing." I hope some execs are listening.
The story about Bill in the game is very different. Bill and Frank had a fight and Frank left. Shortly after, Ellie and Joel find Bill and you help him find car parts to get a working car for Ellie and Joel. They eventually find the parts, but they also find Frank, he hung himself because he got bitten shortly after he left. Bill then fixes a car for them and Ellie and Joel leave.
"You were my purpose..." That line hit me like a ton of bricks, I ugly cried. I'm an 40 year old dude and I ugly cried hard!
Had to break after the third episode, I forgot how good it was.
I believe Roger Ebert is the person who said that video games are not art.
It's one of the few topics where he was gallingly, bafflingly wrong. After making the assertion, he penned a beautifully written but appealingly reasoned explanation of his view.
Essentially, he started by assuming his own premise was true, and used circular logic appealing to his own thesis as proof of itself.
What frustrates me even more is he refused to actually play many of the games recommended to him by his fellow critics and journalists.
@@PadConnelly Ebert used a lot of words to say nothing. Any man made object with the intent of creation is art. It's not that complicated.
At the point he said that, he was mostly correct.
@@aerthreepwood8021No he wasn’t. He was completely wrong.
And people still thought he was the end all be all gods word about media
Having played both games, I can genuinely say, I enjoyed the show tremendously. Easily one of the best adaptations ever, and includes aspects I wish had been in the game itself. Both actors nail these roles perfectly and make them their own. Its fun seeing game locations captured in real-life - even in blink and you missed it moments. The creators really showed their love for the material.
1. You don't go North. You go to your nearest desert. Dry heat is the enemy of all funghi. (and microbes)
You also don't have to battle the cold and you've got sunshine to run things on solar power.
2. Ash is great fertilizer, if not the best. After a forest fire there's a huge growth spurt because the ash of the burnt trees fertilizes the area.
Ash also kills insects, so it's great in many ways.
I personally love seeing all the shots of places from Alberta!
Wooo! Got something to watch when I get home later tonight! Thanks for posting Siemone & George 🤘😎
I strongly recommend playing the game. The show has some great additions and interesting reinterpretations, but so much good stuff simply isn’t there at all, and major traits of Joel and Ellie are fundamentally different.
You can play Part I on PC, but I feel Remastered on PS4 is the definitive version. Remastered is a higher fidelity and polished version of the original. Part I makes tons of little changes that added up to detracting for me, from character design changes, first draft UIs, buggy details, modified animations, etc. Part I technically looks more realistic, but Remastered looks “better”. If it’s your first time, obviously you won’t notice differences in the comparison. Remastered felt like the perfected version of the original while Part I feels kinda cash-grabby.
Either way, your choice if you do, I’d watch regardless. Just want to add additional perspective.
U get to meet Bill. But for Frank it is too late. Also in the game Bill and Ellie has a few funny banter. That part of the game has the trio of them getting through peril to get the parts needed to get the car running
In the game you fight one of those big guys in bill's town on your way to get the car.
also you only interact with bill because frank's already dead.
and bill and frank was in a relationship, but fell apart somewhere down the line. bill and joel wasn't friends like in the show because bill didn't allow frank and him to have friends coz bill doesn't trust anyone and want to keep frank safe and maybe that's one of the reason why they broke up and why frank hated bill so much as he stated in his suicide letter to bill.
The game narrative shows how love can turn into hate and how you can easily lose your loved ones in the world of tlou. It shows to joel what he could end up like bill if he doesn't stop seeing the world full of hate and pain, after losing sarah and tess. and also opens up a way for joel and ellie's relationship to be more than just joel doing a job for the fireflies.
The show also accomplish this narrative but in a diff way, like the letter from bill to joel. also, they show joel how love can be so precious, and in this world full of hate, pain, and suffering love can still persevere, and it's still possible to grow old with someone and die happy.
They meet bill in the game it’s just written differently.
@51:35 prepare yourselves for the best episode! @57:30 yeah Simone...prepare to cry...@1:04:30 omg never saw Simone crying like that...this was the best episode of the show, for me, so deep, so emotional, when all the world is kind of lost, we still can keep the love, the humanity, the care.
It's hard to see it but at the end of episode 1 when it shows the collapsed skyscraper, those noises are the infected/clickers. There's a clicker in the foreground on top of one of the buildings but it's literally 1 or 2 frames so you'd never see it if you didn't pause.
So lucky to have that kitty with you at the end of that 5th episode to help you cope. That's the one episode after which everyone needs recovery time.
Good shout on The Newsroom :)
most overrated speech/opening ever... so wrong on so many levels... overly nostalgic with heavily rose-colored glasses about the past.. overly cynical about the (then) present... gets a lot of the stats comically, almost hilariously wrong, like they were just making shit up to try and make a (wrong) point (don't remember the entire rant now but off the top of my head I think the infant morality rank was closer to some sub-Saharan African country than the USA's)... and the overall meme being pushed by it, that politicians are afraid to be critical of the US at all or that all Americans are brainless mindless jingoists who would be shocked into silence by anyone being critical of the country, is just so fucking stupid and demonstrably untrue... I mean... we're in way more dystopian times now than we were when the Newsroom was made, and the last guy who got elected president did so calling the country a garbage can. Americans are some of the most self-critical people in the world and this is reflected in our media, art, politics, and.. shows.. like Newsroom... nobody would be shocked by it. It's not bold or brave or unique or something that needs to be said but that everyone is too afraid to say. On the contrary, it's cliché. and often completely overstated.
The country has never been perfect or problem-free. But.. in 2012? When the show first aired? That was pretty much our peak. There were things that were worse, sure... but not many things. Compared to the 40s or the 60s or whenever Dumb and Dumber guy's character was looking back at fondly as the time when America was great? The country was significantly better in 2012 than it was. And was still, arguably, the greatest country in the world in many, many ways. That doesn't mean it ranks #1 in every random asinine metric... what a stupid meme... it has never meant that. It also doesn't mean all other countries are bad or that the USA is perfect. Nobody said that. And it's not wrong to acknowledge America's strengths. But... where are these mythical politicians or media personalities who say that the US is absolutely perfect and can't answer a question about America having problems without someone in the audience raising a sign and pushing them to break script and do so? They don't exist. They've never existed.
27:32. Yup, that is Bioshock Infinite, the *other* game in 2013 where Troy Baker played a gruff and distant man hired to escort a younger girl through danger, all while building a paternal relationship and tearing down his emotional walls created, in part, through the trauma of losing his daughter.
Elizabeth in that game constantly can provide Booker (the player character) with ammo while yelling for him to “Catch.” It happens frequently enough that it would get burned into a player’s mind long after rolling credits.
