    The scene at the beginning with the police officer is such an important part and you don’t (or at least I didn’t) think about it more in depth until after seeing the movie and talking with friends about it. You’re made to think that the officer had “racist” intent when asking for Chris’ ID, when in reality, it was Rose not wanting the officer to see his ID because he was going to eventually be added to the missing persons list, so it would immediately put the Armitage’s “cult” in jeopardy. I’ve probably watched this movie close to 10 times now and i still get blown away with all of the subtle hints and Easter eggs throughout this movie.

      Very true about Rose- I picked that up on my second rewatch. Cop was definitely still being a needlessly racist turd about things though 💁🏻‍♀️ The movie tricks us into thinking she’s an ally when she’s even worse than the officer!!

    • @slmott399
      @slmott399 2 года назад +53

      It's not so much about the cop not having racist intentions asking for his ID - I think you can argue he does - it's about the "ally" having secret motivations that we don't learn about until the end. It's about how she has an ulterior motive to be his ally in that moment for her own selfish reasons.

    The lyrics of the song from the opening and closing credits translated (from Swahili) are “Brother, Listen to the ancestors. Run! You need to run far! (Listen to the truth) Run! Run! To save yourself, Listen to the ancestors.” It plays in several key moments for Chris in the movie. When he’s describing the African American experience at the party, and given what the lyrics are saying it’s more or less a direct warning to him. And when he’s looking at the mounted deer head ‘Sikiliza’ (Listen) and since that’s what he kills the dad with, he did listen.

    I'm so glad you watched this movie! It's an easy 10 out of 10 for me. Jordan Peele wrote a brilliant script and this is one of the best directorial debuts ever. Daniel Kaluuya takes us through such a complicated, multi-faceted journey with his character. Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener do such a great job of presenting the lovable, good person images they've cultivated in so many of the roles they've played and then letting that suddenly, sickeningly fall away. I have to say that Allison Williams did such a great job in her role that, when I see her in another role, I immediately think: Oh, I don't trust her. I don't like her. What's she up to? This movie just drips so convincingly with the unease of both a horror movie and a drama. If the power of good storytelling is to allow you to experience some aspect of life from another person's perspective, this movie succeeds spectacularly!

    The comment at the end about telling the story to the police and it not being believable is a touch on reality. They even use the same theme for comedic relief when his friend goes to the police and tries to raise his disappearance but all this to say, it's a sad reality that when black people go through something/try and ask for help, it's often downplayed and not believed even if it is plausible.

  • @breannab7112
    @breannab7112 2 года назад +38

    I'm so excited you all watched this! I completely agree with Matt; this movie is an absolute masterpiece. I love how much of the symbolism you all picked up on, but I also love that the script is so intricately written that there are so many things a Black person picks up on that most others won't because we've experienced them. It feels like Black people and white people are watching two different movies at times because of those differences, but at the same time the film still clearly gets its point across in a major, undeniable way. Truly masterful. Genius.

    As a biracial person myself you guys are pretty spot on. A lot of the stuff does happen in real life but maybe a little less dramatic.When you’re dating a white girl and meet her family a lot of times they will go out of their way to tell you how much they like basketball and start calling you “my man” or anything that they thinks helps them relate to you . A lot of times it is not with bad intentions, they just don’t have any idea about your culture. On the flip side sometimes it is really bad and people who are normally “not racist” now have a problem with their daughter dating a black man or they are embarrassed by it

    • @saquist

      But note how even Matt notices the absurdity of how it portrays white people having fun...a rousing game of bingo?

    So ive seen this film before and this would be my second time while wanting to see your reactions and thoughts. My thoughts both times are how amazing it was as a film. Seeing it the second time it gives so much extra when you notice things, such as when Rodney explains the guy from the beginning was missing 6 months, meanwhile Chris and Rose have been dating for 4 months. So when you see the intro to the film when Andre is lost in the neighborhood and he is on the phone looking for directions, he is most likely talking to Rose and it's all apart of the setup for her brother to go and collect him. And the 2 months in between relationships to find a new suiter, i.e Chris. Just one of the many small details you dont pick up on until the second time watching that i feel is pretty great continuity. Love this film 9/10 if not more for sure! ❤

    I loved this reaction. I think this was the first time that I've heard a reactor mention the fact that people of color experience a lot of the feelings that the main character felt, throughout the film, (maybe not the whole brain switching thing, but the general awareness, and why this movie may be a Horror Film) Or being used to ignorant, or straight up racist white people, and being prepared for how you may answer certain questions. Or, looking around for other people of color when you're in new areas, or situations.

    This movie is absolutely a thriller, but it's a bit of a dip into sci-fi. I think Matt has come a really long way. From hating some classic movies a few years ago to calling this a masterpiece. Being able to appreciate the symbolism and the internal consistency of the themes and science and going along for the ride, not bashing it like he might have a few years ago because it's unbelievable. love the channel, keep it up.

      @@MattLaneFitness thanks for the comment man. I'm a history buff, and looking through history, the best way to convey a large idea; like themes, philosophies, symbols has ALWAYS been through stories. It doesn't matter if it's a book, movie, well done TV, or telling stories around a campfire. A well told story opens your mind and lets you experience something through anothers perspective, through other eyes (see what I did there). This is true in the past whether the story was of a religious parable, childrens fairy tale or mythology for the masses. Thank you for looking through Holdens eyes, the stories he is telling aren't always his own but he's definitely telling them to you through the movies you watch.
