Not a bad bad movie It's a good 👍 The only negative is the CGI for some of the animals like the lion jumping from the stairs or the pelican scene with the game
“WHAT YEAR IS IT!?” I don’t know why but “in the jungle you must wait, until the dice read five or eight” will randomly pop into my head whenever I’m playing board games. 😂
Memorable board games have that effect: they become quotable even outside of the game; oddly enough, the film recognizes this: Allan, jokingly, tries to finish the game as if it was Clue. It's interesting how Clue, and any other board game, now competes in pop culture references with a game that, in general, doesn't exist.
In a sense the game was one of the best things to happen to him. He got to relive his childhood, but he got the girl and a redo with the relationship with his dad.
Kinda like what 13 Going on 30 did. Except that movie didn’t have a stampede going all over the city/town, a psychotic hunter going after the main protagonist, poisonous plants that can kill you and mosquitoes that can give you a severe seizure.
It took me watching this reaction to find out Van Pelt is the dad. My mind is blown I never realized. This is one of the best Robin Williams films for sure. Such a classic. I’m excited to see y’all’s reaction to the newer Jumanji movies too. =)
This is like a Peter Pan-type scenario involving an argument between a child and his father, only for the villain to bear a striking resemblance to that father. It’s like… Van Pelt’s likeness manifested into what Alan saw in his father as a kid. Regrets, mistakes and all. Jonathan Hyde’s dual role as Samuel Parrish and Van Pelt were quite uncanny.
I love that the villain was played by the same actor who played the father. Also, the butler from the Macaulay Culkin "Richie Rich"! Underrated comedy from my childhood!

Try Braveheart, Apollo 13, Glory, Willow, Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, The Rocketeer, A Beautiful Mind, Field of Dreams, Krull, The Mask of Zorro. The others you mentioned are definitely some of his best too.
RIP Robin Williams. This is one of my yearly rewatches along with Mrs Doubtfire and Dead Poets’ Society. The entire cast and crew did an incredible job. I agree with Andrew, too, the score is fantastic.
This was based on a children's book I used to read as a kid and was super psyched as a 10 year old seeing it in theaters. But I was insufferable even then because I was telling my mom the house couldn't flood because the stampede already took out a wall lol
1:04:18 My headcanon is that Judy and Peter didn't recognize them at the time because it was still amount 6-8 months before the day that the events took place, but that the alternate memories would hit them when they reached that date. Which is probably one of the reasons that Alan and Sarah made sure to meet them beforehand, so that they'd already be on hand to be supportive when those memories come flooding in.
there is actually some in universe things that support this, for example in the first new film the kids, at the end of the movie, end up in a new timeline where Alex Vreeke never goes missing but retain all the memories of the old timeline. Its like were seeing it from the kids perspective instead of the adults.
But if the original game was completed then time would revert to before they were born. They wouldn't get any memories, as they only reason they adults keep theirs is because they alive during the reset
Zathura’s more of a spin-off than a sequel. They don’t really have any references or mentions of Jumanji in it. But I do agree that it’s a spiritual sequel in some capacity.
Bonnie Hunt is so underrated. I used to love her talk show & there's still some clips on here. She's also written a couple tv shows that she starred in along with David Allen Grier who is a good friend. I remember her talking about pitching her first show & how she had already written the script to each episode for the first season ahead of time because she thought that's how every show was. Everyone looked at her like she was crazy lol
A jumnaji ride would be freaken wild and scary, I think the saddest part for me is how the town has changed and him reliazing he'll never get his life back truly

I saw this movie in 1995, when I was still in elementary school. My Mom only took me to the front of the cinema and I watched it alone. After finished I went home with public transportation. What a memories 😅
the aunt couldn't get into that 1 room that's why all of Alan's things are still in there. She didn't get a chance to clean that room yet and I think only children can hear the drumming of the game
It's reasonable she only cleaned and updated the rooms and the common areas, because they were moving into the house and that's where they will be hanging around the most. And, if she did all on her own as a passion project (granting the time laps didn't skip any crew she might have hired XD), it's natural she would take a break before deciding what to do with all other rooms that have no clear use for them, at that moment (I like the film doesn't spell it out, but it leaves some room to imagine how they are making that house their own). But, of course, it's impled Parrish House is quite big compared to an average house, and many like to clean every room first (to an extent, at least) before focusing on individual rooms.
Ya gotta do Zathura after this. Despite it not being a box office success, it’s still a cute follow-up to the OG Jumanji. It’s too bad this was torn apart so much for the effects, the underlying story tends to be ignored by the “critics”. I remember taking the kids to see it, 6 & 9 years old then, they loved it.
Omg Aaron your killing me haha the infamous johnathen hyde, titanic, the mummy, Alan's DAD haha you know how much I was yelling at the screen when you didn't see it 😂
Kirsten Dunst was 12 years old when she played the character Judy Shepherd in the 1995 American fantasy adventure film Jumanji, she holds up the game board from the movie while filming in downtown Keene.
RIP Robin Williams, you were such a unique talent and one of the funniest(if not THE funniest) men of all time. The comedy genre and movies in general aren't the same without you.
The first time I saw this movie, I wanted to watch the movie again the theaters just for the stampede scene. The scene and the effects and just the urgency is so spot on.
Makes since the dad turned into the "villain" has been used in Jumanji and Peter Pan. Because children look at their parents as the bad guys stopping them from having fun and not realizing their parents love them
I remember watching this movie in theaters in 1995. It was more intense than the average family film which made it so good. The audience really laughed at the part where Bonnie Hunt (Sarah) fainted.
When I was a kid, my sister and mom were watching this movie. When the bats came out of the fireplace, we had a bat fly from the upstairs downstairs to where they are. Safe to say, they didn't really want to watch Jumanji again. Love this movie though.
Wow! That was awful timing! I’m pretty sure that part is the main reason I have a fear of bats. (I know they’re good for the environment & bug control, but still..)
I always found it funny, How Jumanji always confused us why it only chose certain people to play yet also telling us up front at the same time why. "A game for those who seek to find "a way to leave the world behind" Sneaky...🤨
Wh-... Like you said, it says it right on the game itself and is read aloud twice in the movie. How were you then confused about it? O.o It's not sneaky when it's explicitly stated. That's like an advertisement saying "this product is for people with acne" and you go "who's it for though?" xP.
I think my main criticism, of the 2 movies after this one, was not continuing the horror-esque aspect of this one.. also another part that beats the fun craziness of the first movie, that I won't spoil
To be fair, I didn't clock that the same actor was playing the dad and Van Pelt until I was an adult, and I watched this movie countless times as a kid. Also, would love to see a reaction to the spiritual successor, Zathura, too.
Since you mentioned Jurassic Park and how it held up, I thought you guys would like to know that Jumanji and Jurassic Park actually had the same effects team/company.
As a born and raised NH native, this movie means a lot to us since they don't usually film here. Most times when anything does film here, it's just certain scenes, but hardly ever entire movies. In high school, I actually planned on going to college in Keene where this is filmed because they have a film program, but I didn't make it there, unfortunately. As much as I like this movie, I've never understood why that hunter is going after Alan like that. The only thing I can think of is that Alan must've done something to piss him off during his time in the game, I don't know. And yes, you two should definitely do a reaction to Zathura.
One day soon, we'll get to see Andy in an actual pair of full pants lmao. Absolutely fantastic guys. Remember seeing this in the cinema, and I've loved it ever since.
8:33 I made the mistake of showing this movie to a class of children and they actually started screaming like the little girl, I forgot he got dusted into the game, I felt horrible lmao
I watched this movie in school too. In my school Jumanji and Baby's day out was shown on our plasma screens. I was around 5-6 years old when I first watched this movie.
@9:06 - That actress, Gillian Barber, also played a couple roles in Supernatural...as Julie Benz's mom in the S1 episode "Faith" & as Dr. Hess of the British Men of Letters, one of the main villains in S12.
“A game for those who seek to find, a way to leave their world behind” I think the game is looking for people who are looking for an escape. Alan heard it because he just got beat up and would have rather been anywhere else. It’s not explicitly stated but Sarah probably had a good reason for hearing it. Judy and Peter heard it because obviously their parents died, they were by far the easiest targets for the game.
Now you need to see 2005's Zathura! Awesome follow up to this movie. The book was written by the same author as Jumanji and has a similar pretense, with a board game drastically affecting reality. And most of the effects are practical!
I remember getting a Jumanji game in a cereal box when I was a kid, such good memories 😌 the spider one was fun you have to hit mosquitos in the web to lure the spiders. The maze was frustrating from what I remember lol I never played the board game unfortunately
Jumanji is such a good time. My son even asked to by the board game this summer, which is a physical adventure in itself (sigh). lol. My mom and I, quite often, quote David Alan Grier when he says, "Fine. Take it!" after the vine takes the car. That scene is so hilarious to us and when stuff just doesn't go right, depending on the situation, that a line we come back to. 🤣
Important note for possible reactions in the future: Based on the books, Jumanji becomes the board game Zathura(Which is also a move). But the Newer Jumanji moves ignore that and keep the original jungle setting.
Why didn't they just let Alan slip through the floor? The only reason I can think of is that if he did drop to the next floor, that too would become like quick sand. Any other ideas?
The rules of the magic are not very clear (the earthquake splits the entire block, the flood fills just the house, but the quicksand only affects Alan's spot; the entire attic doesn't sink). In any case, we get to see he goes through the floor; in the attic, they have no idea this happened or what may be coming next or if the game will magically kill him if he sinks completely (as if it created some sort of extended dimension where a person fits in the quicksand, rather than going through it... we could even argue that Alan's body may have not been visible through the floor until the next roll of the dice, invoking some other magical effect and deactivating the quicksand; we get to see his legs in the ceiling only after the next turn of the game has been played). After all they've been through at that point, I don't blame them for the paranoia of thinking the worst out whatever the game throws at them (I mean, the game absorbed a child, turned another child into a monkey and is materializing african nightmares in New England; I surely would not want to find out what may happen to Alan if he reaches the bottom of the quicksand).

1:04:43 Judy and Peter 100% had the memories and remembered Alan and Sarah at the end of the movie.
Since you mentioned Jurassic Park and how it held up, I thought you guys would like to know that Jumanji and Jurassic Park actually had the same effects team/company.
Makes sense
As a born and raised NH native, this movie means a lot to us since they don't usually film here. Most times when anything does film here, it's just certain scenes, but hardly ever entire movies. In high school, I actually planned on going to college in Keene where this is filmed because they have a film program, but I didn't make it there, unfortunately. As much as I like this movie, I've never understood why that hunter is going after Alan like that. The only thing I can think of is that Alan must've done something to piss him off during his time in the game, I don't know. And yes, you two should definitely do a reaction to Zathura.
You guys should check out the space themed Jumanji movie: Zathura
One day soon, we'll get to see Andy in an actual pair of full pants lmao. Absolutely fantastic guys. Remember seeing this in the cinema, and I've loved it ever since.
The bad CGI of the animals actually works for me, because they aren't real - they are manifestations of the game.
your videos are amazing, you make it better every time💝
I didn't know the hunter was the same actor as his father I've seen this movie so many times lol
Cannot wait for you guys to watch the next two
The way to manage that game would be to keep it behind thick transparent wall with a sign saying, "if you hear drums, don't worry. You aren't crazy".
Pacino wasnt out of order in Scent of a Woman. He"WASNT FINISHED YET!!!" What you quoted was And Justice for All...
8:33 I made the mistake of showing this movie to a class of children and they actually started screaming like the little girl, I forgot he got dusted into the game, I felt horrible lmao
I was 15 when the movie was first released, and dude! I was traumatized by THAT scene 😂
@damiettamataram3492 I actually thought it was worse as an adult, I wasn't even scared as a kid but as an adult it was horrific
😭😭 good to know its a normal reaction for all generations hahahaa
I watched this movie in school too. In my school Jumanji and Baby's day out was shown on our plasma screens. I was around 5-6 years old when I first watched this movie.
@dilsedesi1704 that's such a great combo
@9:06 - That actress, Gillian Barber, also played a couple roles in Supernatural...as Julie Benz's mom in the S1 episode "Faith" & as Dr. Hess of the British Men of Letters, one of the main villains in S12.
I remembered seeing her.
What I realized is that movies in the 90s had way more heart, charm and are genuinely touching. Something lacking in movies today
This was such a fun reaction to watch and can’t wait to see you guys watch the next!
This is my childhood I was 15 when it came put and still remember going to tje theater with my friends to watch it. Thank you guys
Trust me, Greg - you WANT a Zathura reaction to happen. Let's all go to space and fight robots with K-Stew! 👩🏻🚀🤖
Not knowing enough about the inside of a police car is a good thing LOL
I remember getting a Jumanji game in a cereal box when I was a kid, such good memories 😌 the spider one was fun you have to hit mosquitos in the web to lure the spiders. The maze was frustrating from what I remember lol I never played the board game unfortunately
I have a board game ♟️ last Christmas 🎄
Skipped David Allen Grier's best line. When the plant takes his car and he's like "Fine! Take it!"
For me it’s when he gets handcuffed to his car and screams “ALAAAAAAAN!!!”😂
THANK YOU!! Someone finally mentions the Mr Darling/Capt Hook mechanic that is traditionally done in plays of Peter Pan!
I had the board game. And the stampede through the town was filmed in my small New Hampshire home town
Yes! Please do 'Mrs. Doubtfire' (1993), as well. Thank you. 🧡
Now in Fairness, Jumanji's sequels and possibly Zathura expand on the potential of this Universe.
“Not good enough Sonny Jim! Coming ready or not.”
Undoubtably one of my favorite villain quotes.🥶
Brooooo Zathura was one of my nightmare childhood movies, I would love to see some love for it.. never knew they were kinda connected, that's cool
Important note for possible reactions in the future: Based on the books, Jumanji becomes the board game Zathura(Which is also a move). But the Newer Jumanji moves ignore that and keep the original jungle setting.
I loved the “piece of cake” “piece of crumb cake” Casper reference you made!
I’d imagine they’d be worried about the fall. The house had extremely tall ceilings and taking a fall like that could have injured him.
Can't wait for the next moves in the series, but please let them do Zerthura, maybe even bridge to terabitha
