The radar guy was a near legendary vocal comedian, Michael Winslow, who could do really cool sound effects just with voice. His other notable movie roles were in the "Police Academy" series.
I seem to recall George Lucas only allowed the licencing for this movie if there was no merch. Also, Lonestar could not look like Luke or Han. Mel Brooks put the merchandising joke in, and if you look at him right, Lonestar actually looks like Indiana Jones.
The first Rambo movie is actually a very gritty story about a Vietnam vet who wanders into a little country town and is unfairly targeted by the local sheriff. The following movies were more cheesy 80s action movies.
4:30 "Gail's" name is Dot Matrix which was a common type of printer at the time. She's voiced by Joan Rivers who was a big comedian that most younger people know from doing interviews on the red carpet with her daughter Melissa
Sorry if it's a stupid question but english isn't my mothertongue.. I never understood this joke while watching. I just know people laugh about it and I have no idea what "Druish" in this case is supposed to be or what the joke is about. Thanks in advance.
The Druish/Jewish thing is also why her father goes on and on about the great price he got on the Mercedes space car. Brooks is Jewish, so he gleefully tosses out Jew jokes like Jewish kids toss out the gefilte fish their moms packed for them.
Well you did ask what George Lucas thought about this movie: Mel Brooks asked him permission to make this, Lucas agreed as long as they didn't try to sell any Spaceballs merchandise from the movie. That's why they put in the merchandising jokes
5:05 Fun Fact: The actor for Prince Valium, Jim J. Bullock, is a gay man. He had a partner named John Casey in the years of 1990 to 1996. He also was also known for playing in several sitcoms, such as Too Close for Comfort, ALF, and one of his more famous roles was as Mr. Monroe in Nickelodeon's Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide.
The scene with Pizza the Hut could only be filmed once. The interior of the costume was practically an oven. Think about it, that was real melted cheese, sauce, bread and pepperoni. The actor had to be pulled out due to heat exhaustion (if not heat stroke). Afterwards, the actor received medical advice not to get in the costume again and then he refused to do so once he was back on set. No other actors would get in the costume after they saw what happened to the original actor, so they had to use what film they managed to get on the first and only recording.
The actor inside the costume, was Dom DeLuise! (I know, impossible to tell from the outside). Not a mere mortal, but a super being with powers far beyond those of mortal men - Captain Chaos from "The Cannonball Run" (1981).
Tesla named their performance levels on the original Model S from this movie - Ludicrous mode went 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, and Plaid mode went 0-60 in 1.9 seconds.
The nurse that gives “Great Helmet” is the same actress that was Denise Richard’s Captain in Starship Troopers. She also has a memorable reoccurring role on Seinfeld.
That radar scene was a cameo of Michael Winslow. He was also in _Police Academy_ He bills himself as “The Man Of 10,000 Sound Effects”, as every single sound effect-the radar pings, the static, the PA page, to describing “The Sweeps, the Bleeps and the Creeps” is made with his own mouth. He’s got some old standup that’s hysterical, specifically the one about him renting a truck.
You heard a reference to "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" which never happened. Mel Brooks even went on a talk show to try and promote "Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2".
Honestly this was kind of your personal Event Horizon, Alex. From the moment you watched Star Wars, your life entered a point of no return where it became your destiny to watch SPACEBALLS as well.
“Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em”. One of the most 80s sayings ever. Everyone used to say that back in the day. It means take a short break, as long as it takes to smoke a cigarette, which is 5 to 10 mins. Man, I miss the 80s. I know I’m late. I just discovered your channel and binge watching your content. I love your reactions and sense of humor.
The prince at the beginning to marry the princess was named Prince Valium....after the pill. Also, (I haven't looked as well) Before making Spaceballs, Mel Brooks asked for George Lucas's permission to parody Star Wars. Lucas was fine with it and said the only condition was Lone Star didn't dress like Han Solo. As a result, Lone Star was dressed reminiscent of Indiana Jones instead.
20:47 Lucas loved the script and gave Mel Brooks his blessing on one condition, he could not release any Spaceballs merchandise. Industrial Light and Magic even did some of the effect work for this movie.
Fun fact about that scene. In the lower left you see one guy not stand up. He’s sitting in the spot the other guy at the beginning was, the one that got schwartzed for going over Dark Helmet’s helmet. All to show the nepotism was rampant but not fast enough before a generic guy replaced him
Mel Brooks movies are amazing and products of their time. Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood: Men in Tights are two classics you should check out if you haven't already
The opening scene with the loooooooong ship reveal is a poke at Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey which had sequences just like this, unironically :P Prince Valium is a joke on what wives in the 80's used to do when they were tired of dealing with their husbands, they'd "go sleep with Prince Valium" (Valium being a sedative drug "We all know Prince Valium's a pill!" says Dot)
There were also various long shots of star destroyers in Star Wars that it played on, but 2001 was definitely a good bit. The Nostromo from 'Alien' as well.
Haven’t seen this movie in years but both the combing the desert thing and Princess Vespa taking off her hair/headphones live rent free in my head. Also, do Americans not know what Vespas are? It’s so common to see them driving around in Europe, I never even considered they wouldn’t be known over there.
The Wizard of OZ should have been easy to get every reactor should have seen that movie i would have thought but no recognition when they 1st see Yoghurt.....
11:36 They said it twice before that it's a Mercedes, so no De Lorean. By the way. The droids name who you keep calling Gail is Dot Matrix Dot Matrix was the old school printer standard that used pins and color bands by printing the image with tiny dots.
I appreciate that he's begun his journey into watching all the movies of everything, but good glob, there's so much this guy hasn't seen. A salute to your journey on getting more culture.
This was the throwback reaction I didn’t know I needed. I haven’t thought about this movie in nearly decades, but could still quote it right alongside ya. Hell yeah
When they are walking up to the statue of Yogurt is also a reference to the in " The Wizard of Oz" when they've walking up to see the Wizard. The dinks that rescue them in the desert is a reference to " Snow White and the Seven Dwarves " and " Star Wars ". Valium is a medicine that can knock you out. Hence Prince Valium is always starting to fall asleep. The man with the alien coming out of him is John Hurt. The same thing happened to him in "Alien". That's why he said " Oh no. Not you again ". The head of megamaid and apes seeing it is a reference to " The Planet of The Apes " first movie. Great that you saw the Millennium Falcon at the restaurant. Most people don't see it until someone tells them.
Spaceball One is like the Energizer bunny, it keeps going and going. Also, if you pay attention you might see a cameo by Robin Williams dressed as a Spaceball, with his eyes crossed.
At the time Spaceballs was made, there were no live action Transformer movies. But the cartoon Transformers was very well known, and that's what they are referring to.
> Alex sees Dark Helmet > Also Alex - "... Papa...?" A couple of other little notes - The guy that said, "we aint found shit!", is Tim Russ, who also played Tuvok of ST:Voyager. The guy that had the alien come out of him in the diner is the same guy that had it happen to in the first "Alien" movie, hence why he says, "Not again...!"
You mention that Lonestarr looks like knockoff Indiana Jones. George Lucas helped Mel Brooks a bunch on the production of this movie, and he asked that the hero not look like Harrison Ford's character Han Solo. So Mel Brooks made him look like Harrison Ford's character Indiana Jones (another George Lucas movie) instead.
Tim Russ actually did a short video where he's standing behind a small rock garden with a hair pick moving it around in the rock Garden, it's hilarious.
"But according to a lot of star wars elitists, that is what happened, searching for more money". Yeah, and they're failing spectacularly while they're at it. Also, the spacebal goon in the "combing the desert" scene screaming "we ain't found shit !", was played by Tim Russ, who starred in Star trek Voyager as Commander Tuvok. But besides that, this movie is still one of my most favorite comedies of all time.
17:15 It's called, Colonel Bogey's March. It was originally composed in 1914 by the British army. It was used in the movie, The Bridge On The River Kwai.
Its also very prominently used in media from many old looney tunes and old disney cartoons. It got embedded into the memory of many millenials and gen x-ers without knowing anything about it
During WWII (and ever since) it was often sung by us Brits to a set of lyrics beginning with "Hitler has only got one ball.....the other is in the Albert Hall"
The guy in the diner with the chest buster was played by John Hurt, the same guy from Alien. And if you haven't seen Aliens yet you are missing out on one of the best action movies. Watch the extended version.
This is one of my favorite movies, I’ve been watching this since I was like 3 years old! I still quote this movie all the time. This is one of the best parody movies of all time. The scene where Darth Helmet is playing with the dolls and the scene where they shoot the princess’ hair and she mows them all down have always been my favorite 😂
I still remember being able to attend a theater showing of this film inside one of those types of theaters that only show 'off the prime time' movie places as a one time, midnight showing. The theater was sold out. And, got to say, there's few things grander then being able to share all the laughter that this film has to offer. Which, interestingly enough, was vastly tilted towards the Spaceballs, themselves. I understand that Spaceballs II eventually did become a thing. (The search for more money... or something like that.) It was some TV show. I hear it wasn't very good, as I've never seen it.
Something amusing about this movie that's easy to miss... the guy who says "We ain't found shit!" is Tim Russ... who later became an actor and director on Star Trek Voyager.
Have you ever considered Galaxy Quest? roughly speaking, it's "based" on Star Trek, although the comedy is wrapped into a "real story" with character development and stuff.

In 2019, when pulling her helmet out of storage, it fell and cracked....she was heartbroken...until I looked at it closer and told her I had an idea! We used small strips of duct tape to put like X patches over the cracks, she took her glasses and broke one side like his were in the Ludacris scene...and then we took a silver sharpie and wrote "LUDACRIS SPEED SUCKS!!!" On the back of the helmet! Everyone got a great kick out of that. We had pictures with the cast of Weird Science (I know you probably haven't seen it, but it is a MUST watch!!!) Anthony Michael Hall pointed out the writing on the back of her helmet and had to take a moment, they were all laughing SOOO hard!!

That Alien guy was the same actor as in the original Alien movie. (That is why he said "Oh no, not again")
Also, have you seen the license plate on the Princess's car? (SPOIL'D ROTT'N 1)
That prince was yawning all the name because of his name, Prince VALIUM.
And many other things that you missed.
John Hurt, aka ollivander in Harry Potter
"We all know Prince Valium is a PILL"
Man so many good jokes!
I loved the Ape saying, "Shit! There goes the Planet." 😂
So far I've only seen one reactor get the Valium jokes.
@@sonicking2004 Oddly enough one of the apes, which I think is that one that says that line is played by Michael York. He also played Basil Exposition from the Austin Powers movies.
This film shaped my humor a lot and it shows 😂
Also “keep firing Assholes” lives rent free in my head and sometimes I just say it whenever I’m with friends who are about to do stupid and unorganized.
The Lea headphones was the moment I knew I loved this movie ❤
Leia!
When played for network telvision, the asshole line is edited to Morons. It still works.
The whole Asshole bit was the first one from the movie that I had memorized. I was 9 when I did.
Me and my partner say “I’m surrounded by assholes” all the time 😂
The line "Fuck! Even in the future nothing works." runs across my mind at least once a week.
Spaceballs! The RUclips Commemtary!
Spaceballs: the youtube comment reply.
The kids love this one!
Fun fact, when Dark Helmet says "Why don't we take a 5 minute break, it is exactly 5 minutes until you see the Spaceballs again.
Spaceballs and Independence Day, is the reason I call Bill Pullman...President Lonestar.
Pullman needed to be in more kino
o7
I heard from somewhere that a sequel was being talked about "Spaceballs 3: the search for Spaceballs 2"
4:30 "Gail's" name is Dot Matrix which was a common type of printer at the time. She's voiced by Joan Rivers who was a big comedian that most younger people know from doing interviews on the red carpet with her daughter Melissa
Her catchphrase was also “Can We Talk…”
"Funny, she doesn't look Druish." is one of the funniest lines in the history of cinema.
Sorry if it's a stupid question but english isn't my mothertongue.. I never understood this joke while watching. I just know people laugh about it and I have no idea what "Druish" in this case is supposed to be or what the joke is about. Thanks in advance.
@anunnacy Jewish. Druish.
There exists a phrase and concept known as "Jewish princess", and, b/c it's a silly space world, she's a Druish princess.
*rimshit* baddum-tiss
The Druish/Jewish thing is also why her father goes on and on about the great price he got on the Mercedes space car.
Brooks is Jewish, so he gleefully tosses out Jew jokes like Jewish kids toss out the gefilte fish their moms packed for them.
I love how most of the best jokes in the movie went over Alex’s head. Lol
Yeah or he was laughing at something else and he missed them.
“ i am your father’s brothers uncles cousin’s former roommate” I loveee that😂😂😂
And how all the guys are cross eyed
Well you did ask what George Lucas thought about this movie: Mel Brooks asked him permission to make this, Lucas agreed as long as they didn't try to sell any Spaceballs merchandise from the movie. That's why they put in the merchandising jokes
Lucas even let Mel use his special effects studio to make the movie. Guess he wanted quality parody.
70s and 80s comedies were something special.
It was truly a golden age.
You're not wrong.
Mel was told he couldn't make Lone Star look like Han solo, so he made him look like Indiana jones
Which is also why he named him Lonestar. Lone being just another way of saying solo.
John Hurt, who plays the guy with the chestburster in the diner, is the also the actor who played Kane in Alien. That's why he says "not again".
there's an iconic clip of Alien Colonial Marines where the alien is glitching, because the game is just that buggy, to the tune of Ragtime Gal
5:05
Fun Fact: The actor for Prince Valium, Jim J.
Also, Vinny's "You're delicious boss" line was added to get Pizza Hut to sign off on using their company name.
Tesla named their performance levels on the original Model S from this movie - Ludicrous mode went 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, and Plaid mode went 0-60 in 1.9 seconds.
They also sold a Tesla flamethrower
The nurse that gives “Great Helmet” is the same actress that was Denise Richard’s Captain in Starship Troopers. She also has a memorable reoccurring role on Seinfeld.
She also guest-starred a year later (1988) on ST:TNG.
Who did she play on Seinfeld?
@@zahracarr3018 pls google this stuff. I create the rabbit hole, you go down it. To make things easy for you: It’s the woman who never wears a bra.
That radar scene was a cameo of Michael Winslow. He was also in _Police Academy_
He bills himself as “The Man Of 10,000 Sound Effects”, as every single sound effect-the radar pings, the static, the PA page, to describing “The Sweeps, the Bleeps and the Creeps” is made with his own mouth.
He’s got some old standup that’s hysterical, specifically the one about him renting a truck.
You forget Michael Winslow's most notable uncredited role......he Voiced Spike from 'Gremlins'....
The guy who said, "We ain't found shit!" is Tim Russ. He was CDR Tuvok in Star Trek Voyager.
That's my mom's favorite line. 😅
He also does a great job of explaining Star Wars for the newbies. ruclips.net/video/M_ZRsf9sneQ/видео.html
He still finds it funny that more people tend to recognize him from "4 words in Spaceballs than 7 years on Voyager"
That is hysterical! Never knew
He also was one of the bad guys in the TNG episode where the Enterprise is undergoing that baryon sweep.
I remember as a child, I hadn't seen Aliens at the time so the alien scene with John Hurt traumatized me.
SPACEBALLS?!? ..
oh shit! .. there goes the planet!
fantastic *PLANET OF THE APES MOVIE* Ref (original, NOT the Remake)
20:47 Lucas loved the script and gave Mel Brooks his blessing on one condition, he could not release any Spaceballs merchandise. Industrial Light and Magic even did some of the effect work for this movie.
Spaceballs the toilet paper!
@@noth1ng5idSpaceballs the FLAMETHROWER!
… but they so many merch ideas, they decided to put all of it into the movie since they couldn’t sell it.
Awww Man! One of my favorite bits didn't make the edit: "They've gone... Plaid!" 🤣
I was thinking that too when he passed that scene.
I watched this right after release and still use the "Keep firing, assholes" at work and general situations to this day. What a quotable movie...
I can't believe it. I'm surrounded by a**holes
The opening scene with the loooooooong ship reveal is a poke at Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey which had sequences just like this, unironically :P
Prince Valium is a joke on what wives in the 80's used to do when they were tired of dealing with their husbands, they'd "go sleep with Prince Valium" (Valium being a sedative drug "We all know Prince Valium's a pill!" says Dot)
Also he dresses like Prince Valiant. :D
It is impressive how many jokes and movie references Alex missed😂 Spaceballs is a great movie to check how many movies someone has watched haha
It's pretty impressive how many he caught, as well.
I can't believe John Hurt agreed to parody his "giving birth" scene from ALIEN.
His "OH NO, NOT AGAIN." line just killed me
The Wizard of OZ should have been easy to get every reactor should have seen that movie i would have thought but no recognition when they 1st see Yoghurt.....
@@feldegast I am more baffled by the Alien. Even if you haven’t seen it, you know the scene from pop culture
@@ladabudilova9262 he acted as if he knew the Alien refrence there i thought.....
Rick Moranis completely ad-libbed the scene with Dark Helmet playing with dolls.
11:36
They said it twice before that it's a Mercedes, so no De Lorean.
By the way.
The droids name who you keep calling Gail is Dot Matrix
Dot Matrix was the old school printer standard that used pins and color bands by printing the image with tiny dots.
Now watch Airplane!, Top Secret, Hot Shots and The Naked Gun :)
Men at Work also
I think we actually need Alex to watch some John Candy movies
Uncle Buck is a good movie
Planes Trains Automobiles
Those aren't pillows . . .
Watching your reaction makes me miss my old warehouse job, because my coworkers would quote this, Monty python, and Austin powers.
4:20 The _look_ on Alex's face when Dot Matrix came on screen was so infectious I grinned and laughed aloud! So adorable!
Spaceball One is like the Energizer bunny, it keeps going and going. Also, if you pay attention you might see a cameo by Robin Williams dressed as a Spaceball, with his eyes crossed.
Wait what?????
At the time Spaceballs was made, there were no live action Transformer movies. But the cartoon Transformers was very well known, and that's what they are referring to.
At 43 years old, I still randomly say, "We ain't found sh*t" 🤣😂🤣
First Blood is a MUST.
"We ain't found shit!"
You need to watch Star Trek: Voyager. That guy (Tim Russ) is in it as Lieutenant Commander Tuvok.
I was looking specifically for this and if no one said it, I was going to lmfao. I loved voyager
The innuendos in this are about to hit levels not seen before on this channel... I fear for Aarons safety editing it.
At 19:36 the actor that says "We ain't found shit!" is Tim Russ, he played Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager
> Alex sees Dark Helmet
> Also Alex - "... Papa...?"
A couple of other little notes - The guy that said, "we aint found shit!", is Tim Russ, who also played Tuvok of ST:Voyager. The guy that had the alien come out of him in the diner is the same guy that had it happen to in the first "Alien" movie, hence why he says, "Not again...!"
When he didn’t realize the parody with the slow credits and the drawn out ship pass by within the first minute I knew this would be bad lol.
Favorite line, Did you guys find anything yet? We ain’t found shit! 😂
By Tim Russ, funniest Vulcan in existence. Really.
I love how this movie subjected Alex to himself and made him just shake his head and roll his eyes. Now you know how we feel
ya gotta go back to Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein to truly *get* Mel Brooks
...and producers and robin hood men in tights and the other ones I havent seen
17:15
It's called, Colonel Bogey's March.
Watch the extended version.
no, screw the hadley's hope scene
The Dinks tune is from Bridge over the River Kwai, the one the Brit POWs whistle to show theirs defiance to the Japanese holding them.
"From the Bark", you see Pluto is a dwarf planet but it's also the name of the Dog in Looney Tunes, so "Bark" was the Bark of a Dog, not tree bark.
It’s not a flying squirrel, it’s a sugar glider. You’re welcome Alex, from Australia.
the only animal in that continent which isn't trying to kill you
This is one of my favorite movies, I’ve been watching this since I was like 3 years old! I still quote this movie all the time. This is one of the best parody movies of all time. The scene where Darth Helmet is playing with the dolls and the scene where they shoot the princess’ hair and she mows them all down have always been my favorite 😂
9:45 "this is stupid but i kinda love it" i think we found this channels catch phrase!
If you haven't done Robin Hood: Men Tights or Blazing Saddles yet, dude, you have to 😂 Mel Brooks is a genius
dude blazing saddles and robin hood: men in tights are the true peak of mel brooks classic (as in nobody would come NEAR those scripts today) comedy GOLD 100%
Lucas liked the idea for this movie so much he let them use Industrial Light & Magic for the effects.
Thanks to my daughter, she and I cosplay as Barf and Dark Helmet!! I make a pretty good Barf, and she is the perfect size for Dark Helmet!!
I just saw your profile pic. You met David Tennant?!?!? You lucky MOFO!
"Light the candles and spin the dreidel, 'cause she's a Dru!" 🤣💀
The "playing with your dolls again" scene? ALL IMPROVISED.
Wanna break the cycle? "The GOODS"raunchy comedy about selling cars. Lots of funny, lots of good actors.
So it was many years until I learned the lyric to the dink dink song.
It is an old ww2 tune sung by the allies.
the Lyrics:
Hitler has only just one ball.
Goring has two but very small.
Heimler has let than Hitler.
And Goebbles has no ball at all.
You will definitely love rambo 1 and 2. You would also love the original planet of the apes despite how old it is. They are just damn good movies.
7:44 The Doublemint Twins! They were iconic in the '80s!
He missed out on Winslow too...sadness
"Harry started feeling around the trees, and he said 'I know we're on pluto"?... Harry how can you tell?? "From the Bark!.. (pluto... as in the Disney dog)
John Candy cannot be replaced, also modern Hollywood wouldn't have the balls for half these jokes.
He missed "Go back to the golf course and work on your putz." 😂
