Sadly, the next two movies are so bad they’ll make you question if the first one was good. We all wish they just stopped after the first one and we could imagine the rest being cool. The Animatrix was pretty cool though, it’s a bunch of short animated stories that fills in the back story.

39:30 There's actually a pretty solid logic to this. Once you fire a bullet, it's on a defined ballistic trajectory that can be instantly parsed if you can read data straight from the Matrix, and the bullet is just another element of the Matrix itself. It's why Agents can dodge bullets, and why Neo can now control them. But when you fight hand-to-hand, every action is guided by a will and can't be read as just another data point or directly controlled by Neo. It's why the Agents don't go all bullet-time to just dodge punches, etc. like when Morpheus tried to fight them.

A fun fact, John Wick is a big giant love letter to The Matrix in a few ways. The director, Chad Stahleski, was Keanu's stunt double for The Matrix. The actor for the continental doctor played a very important character in the second Matrix movie, and of course, Laurence Fishburne being the homie in all 3 movies is a given.
The Matrix is also quite literally the movie that pioneered slow motion in fight scenes. Every 2000s action movie after this was trying to do what they did with bullet time.

    • @speider

Slow motion was used a lot before the matrix. John Woo was known for how he used slow motion in action scenes.

I saw this movie way before its world premiere in 1999, as a part of tech demo by DELL, who provided the systems used for Matrix's CGI. It was a wonderful experience back then, and it still aged well because it mixed practical and CGI effects together in a unique innovative blend. For example the 180-degree camera during Trinity's flying kick or Neo's bullet-dodging moment is 100% practical. There were dozens of cameras mounted on a semicircular beam, all synchronized to fire within milliseconds from the previous one; that's how you get the flyaround in slow-mo. A truly limit breaking movie.
Too bad the sequels spoiled what could've been a truly epic story.

This is really one of the most intelligent movies to come out of Hollywood. The Matrix simulation is based on the Cartesian philosophy, specifically the Evil Demon (or Evil Genius) argument that Descartes posed as a challenge to his own Cogito (I think, therefore I am) in which reality is an illusion created by an omnipotent being tricking us into believing what we believe. It also references Descartes' dream argument in that perceived reality is actually a dream. The movie is also VERY heavily influenced by the original animated Ghost in the Shell, which was also very philosophical and explored concepts if identity such as: who are we when our bodies become interchangeable

Especially with how far we've come w/ social media and the internet and AI and VR, etc., the underlying theme and premise is even more relatable now than it was when it came out which is a feat that few movies accomplish.
The technical parts of this are also amazing and there are some cool behind-the-scenes videos on RUclips that shows how they did those bullet dodge scenes and stuff - they had to invent all new types of cameras and software just for this movie to pull off some of those scenes, so the impact this movie had to the filmmaking industry was almost as big as the cultural impact it had.

@@MrParkerman6 gee sorry - "they used existing still cameras on a custom motion control rig that they designed controlled by custom software to control the shutter speed and timing based on a programmed camera path". I was simplifying for the purpose of conversation and you were supposed to pick up on that instead of being a jackass.

The best theory I have seen about The Matrix is that the cookie that the Oracle gives Neo is actually a program that gives him the abilities as The One. For the program to take affect Neo needs to be rebooted and that is what happens when he dies, he is rebooted and the new program kicks in giving him all his abilities

"Trinity, could you be anymore badass?" In the German translation, Trinity's follow up line to the Agent saying "Only human" was swapped out from "Dodge this" to "Only a machine." Which is pretty fucking baller.

Funny part about watching this is remembering the first time I ever saw it. As soon as this came out on DVD, I was in high school. My best friend invited me over to watch it on his parent's massive surround sound system home theater. The scene popped up with Morpheus presenting the red pill/blue pill and as soon as he says the line about "I'll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes", the power goes out.
There was a massive storm at the time that was being blended into the ambience of the movie, so we didn't know how bad the thunder and lightning was at that time.

Mescaline is the active psychedelic in specific species of cacti. It was the most widely used psychedelic by native americans in the US. Once a person named Aldous Huxley wrote a book about the experience called "The Doors of Perception" it started the whole psychedelic revolution in the 60s.
Definitely recommend it to have an experience that extend beyond yourself, allows you to have more self awareness regarding the direction in your life and really let's you deeply self reflect.
Obviously not gonna work if you use it as an escape or looking for a vice

'The body cannot live without the mind' explains that. The body they were inhabiting would 'die' so they could no longer inhabit it. They themselves did not die, as evidenced by them inhabiting a different body after 'dying.'
