I’ve been a master mechanic for 40 years now and I don’t know what to call the inside of a CV joint either. If you’re like me you can be in a parking lot and someone will drive by and you can hear the axles popping as they go by. Thanks for another great video from San Luis Obispo California
💯
Every manufacturer calls it something different.
We just called them "race and carrier"
My axles use to pop a lot then I replace them
Back in the day it only paid to do boot kits on axles that had torn boots w/o any noises. Once they make noise the joint itself is damaged, new grease won't help.
Good morning Mr Kenny. Hope y'all have a wonderful day. Thank you for the great videos
Just want to ask how do you go about finding quality parts, OEM is a good standard but some times they don't even offer them.
Another great video. Retired shop owner of 32 years ( in the industry for 45 years). One suggestion, I made it a rule for my techs and myself “ before even starting or test driving a customer vehicle always check the oil, coolant and take a look at the tires “. If you scatter a customer’s engine or crash on a test drive guess who buys a new motor or repairs? Just a thought. Keep wrenching 😊😊.
100% completely agree. Sounds like you got your “ dick squashed “ as we say here in California. I also take one more peek under the hood after the final test drive , I have saved myself a comeback or two in my 40 years. I’m still human no matter how much I think I want to walk on water.
Mine was more of a click, but only while turning and also in the golf-ball (what my father calls a Focus). The one side was stuck into the transmission well too; kinda had to use the old CV shaft like a slide hammer while prying gently on the other end (transmission) with a MASSIVE flat-blade.
I don't have a pry-bar that would fit in that area, else I would've used it.
Mr. Kenny! You know it was not until I got both axles replaced as a pair that my car drove normally? It honestly would shake it about 40 52 50 miles an hour like you would think there was a flat tire or the tire was going to fall off . Many other parts change and the prompt did not correct itself until both axles were replaced as a pair... Now I've been in that position where you only have money to get one done and it will definitely get you by but I feel like I'm King 🤴 👑 now riding in my luxury vehicle.
I see you were using the Kingbolen instead of the Launch, any particular reason?
I like the size of the King , but not the cost!
Oh by the way please tell Mrs Kenny I said hello and have a great day
Thanks for the video good job, keep wrenching
yep,.. heard these. good diagnosis.
My Sister has an Elantra w/ this engine. Great engine...change the GD oil! It idles smooth and can't hear it. Not one of the problem engines though...Even Toyota has issues...problem in every manufacturer...
Just call it a CV joint
Good diagnosing
Airbag I will take bets on a worn clock spring instead. But yes time to change CV joints, though by me you keep the axle, and only change the joint and boot, as that generally is a lot cheaper. $35 versus $1100 for the entire axle with joints.
Kenny, I love going to Mexico with you. Say Hi to Meg. for me. Thanks brother Kenny, Keep Wrenching!!
the 2011-2014 were a curse for engine issues they no longer make the 2.4
I concur, Doctor Kenny...be well sir
The inner joint is called a tripoid joint retired f end and steering mechsnic
I rebuilt cv axles for 10 yrs from 1994 to 2004 used Rocford Constant velocity parts. The aftermarket ones are not very good quality.
I noticed my neighbor's brakes squeaking one day and said hey you should put some pads on that thing and they just said oh it will go away!!!
The airbag is more than likely a clockspring. I'd double check with the local dealer, there were several warranty extensions issued by HMA for the clocksprings.
The CV joints for that vintage Sonata were offered as partial axle kits. Still wouldnt recommend that route for a car outside of warranty, wasn't worth the effort, and a whole aftermarket axle is still cheaper.
TPMS will be sensors, the batteries are going dead. Easiest way to program those are to write down the new ID numbers and use the scanner to type in the new ID in place of the old numbers. Programming TPMS sensors on Hyundai and Kia is a ridiculous process. (Former Hyundai shop foreman. I don't miss them)
An orange dipstick indicates a replacement engine was installed.
Kenny you need to stay clear of that bar in Mexico like in From Dusk to Dawn, we remember what happened there. Carry guns, holy water and wooden stakes.
A rzeppa joint, in case anyone cares. That's the outer joint that makes noise. Don't ask me why I remember things like that. Customers don't ask, they just want to know how much and when can I have my car back?
I noticed that the scanner you used to check the DTC"s was a King Bolen. Which Model was it?. I'm thinking of replacing my Innova 3140 and the King Bolen looks pretty good. But I'm debating between the S500 or the S800. Any suggestions?
A new axle is not that much money, some are under $100.00
You’ve been a bad bad boy they’re going to come for you! 😉😂🤣
Thank you, wondering what brand motor oil u use in your RAM? thank you.
IMMO is the immobilizer.
Keep wrenching
Thanks Kenny and tell Mrs. Wrenching I said hello and have a great day! God bless y'all!!
I got an OEM toyota half shaft outer CV axle assembly for under 220. It came with the boot and grease for the inner joint. I'd definitely recommend OEM CV axles. Aftermarket axles are hit or miss.
Back in the eighties we got 1 hour to remove and replace the axle and half an hour to rebuild the axle. Having said that when they are making the noise yours are making it is too late to rebuild. We also paid $7 to $15 for new boot assemblies and Toyota, who refused to sell just boots charged $125 per axle in a Camry. We charged between $40 to $50 an hour labor back then.
Again, another customer that doesn’t change their oil regularly. 🤦♂️. Plus, Hyundais are notorious for burning oil.
noises??? sonata problem !!!
