Pouring old oil from one car into another car creeps me out for some reason, like the new car will get an automotive STD or something! Then I remembered an old guy in my neighborhood back in the 1970s who collected everyone's used motor oil to put in his beater, which burned and leaked oil so fast that he couldn't afford to keep putting new oil in it.

I had an uncle who use to drain oil for customers and way back when the oil only had 500-1000 miles he would save it and change his oil with that., back then nobody had money.
I use the decently brownish motor oil out of my Wife's Caravan in my step daughter's 2016 Mini since it uses a quart about every 500 miles and she won't pay me back. Well , I did. It blew a head gasket about a month ago and I've been debating on what to do with it. 240K miles and original timing chain. I might fix it this winter if I get real bored and there's no metal in the pan. But I doubt it. Maybe it blew a gasket because it had herpes of the cylinder head from used motor oil?
In the Navy, as a diesel engine mechanic, we recycled used motor oil all the time. The system heated it, ran it thru a centrifuge then a set of chngable oil filters and reused it. So pouring that used oil in the engine didn't hurt a thing......

Froth and aeration of the oil. I got a cheap rental car with a 3 cylinder. The oil had just been changed by someone. I drove it from Atlanta to Nashville. When parked overnight in my driveway it dripped oil from both ends of the crankshaft all night, overfilled at oil change. Still ran, didn’t smoke, just dripped.
I had a Dodge 1500 with a V6 engine. Went to the dealer and got my oil changed. Didn’t think much about it. By I noticed my oil meter pointer going back and forth. I stopped into a quick oil change store and asked them to take out 2 quarts of oil from the pan. Suddenly my oil meter was stable and worked correctly. Found out the dealer put in enough oil for a V8. And I got no charge for removing the extra oil. Kenny I watch your RUclips all the time. Thanks for the show.
These are my favorite videos. Slightly passive aggressive, and rightfully so, proving a point to people that have no business telling a man with all your experience how to conduct his business in his shop. Shame on you fools that do, by the way. All in all, I think this was a proper response. And, Kenny, I applaud you for keeping your cool and explaining this with your normally calm and informative tone. I dont think my response would have been as level headed as yours. Good job!
My brother's wife drove her 2008 3.4 Equinox over 100 miles on the expressway with 4 quarts overfill. I change their oil for them and when she got home from her road trip, I checked the dip stick before draining the oil. I was amazed how high the oil was on the dip stick. So, I drained some oil until it was on the top full part of the hash mark. Like I said, I took out four quarts to get the oil level where it was supposed to be. Lucky for her, the engine was undamaged. I was surprised the crank seals weren't damaged and leaking from all the extra oil in the crankcase. That was 8 or so months ago and the engine is still running ok. Her excuse for the over fill was it was dark, and she couldn't see the dip stick very good and she kept adding oil until she felt it was on the full mark. My brother and his wife are lucky the engine survived that blunder. The 3.4 engine holds 4 and 1/2 quarts with the filter and I just don't understand how the engine could run with a gallon of extra oil in the crank case. Crazy stuff, for sure.
@alanlaughter park on level ground, wait a couple minutes for the earl to drain back into the pan, and you'll be golden. A little over full won't hurt anything
I'll have to admit Kenny when I saw you do that I thought that goes against everything I ever was taught. But then I have been taught a lots of stuff that was unreliable. The car drove there, if any damage is done it was already done. Learn something from Kenny. And I did learn somerhing new. Thanks.
My folks bought a brand new 84' Isuzu 2.2 Diesel ⛽️ P'up. They lived on a side hill, so my Dad was getting a different dipstick reading trk nosed in/backed in. Oil accidentally 🛢 got over filled, my mom drove from Scappoose Oregon to Vernonia (hilly terrain) halfway there the engine ran away (revved to the moon). Oil got past the rings & used it for fuel, once the oil level went down, truck was fine, and is still in our family, and runs perfect. All my gas engines big or small I change the oil before it gets black. The oil in tht mini van has the viscosity of water 💧 I'm not a hater, and no harm will come from a test drive. Thx for your videos.

My only experience was over 30 years ago. My sister filled her oil to the top of the valve cover. The engine was done soon after. It was one of those Honda hatchbacks from the early '80s.
@@retrofriends well... how would she know. Better than the vid of a lady just sprinkling a quart over the whole engine like she was flouring a pizza dough!
Appreciate the lesson on overfills. I don't like overfills due to foaming at high engine speeds that MAY make a low drainback engine starve the pump. In the 70s wee used to get small block Chevys with dual exhaust smoking out just one pipe. 9 out of 10 were a clogged ~7/16" diameter drainback... either poor maintenance "glopjelly" or a chunk of gasket, etc. Nothing needle nose pliers or an old speedometer cable couldn't fix!! Customers always loved it when we fixed it for $25!
I overfilled an old van with a v8 in it. The oil foamed and it lost oil pressure. The engine would have been trashed if not for Lucas oil stabilizer. Engine damage can occur in some cases. It's been over a decade but that was my experience. Specs are specs and are there for a reason. BTW I think it was over by only a quart or two. Maybe that's worse as the crank could mix air into the oil, reduce lubrication, and oil pumps are not designed to pump foam.
Watched a RUclips video where a guy made a clear plastic oil pan and plastic side cover for a 4 cylinder motor. This gas motor was on a stand in his shop. He added 16 extra quarts of oil, 4 quarts at a time until it started puking the oil out. Kenny knows what he's talking about.

Kenny, I've been working on vehicles since high school (back in the mid 70's), was formally trained in the U.S. Army as a Track & Wheel vehicle mechanic my whole army career (30 yrs.),was a wrench as a civilian until I retired in 2017. You are one of the best mechanical technicians and a honest guy that I follow on the web. Foolish people always find negativity in something good. You keep doing what you do man!!
When I was in High school I drove a 72 ford maverick with a straight six cylinder. That thing burned oil like crazy. Well, me being the ignorant teenager got tired of adding oil. I filled that engine with used oil from work. I don't even remember what type of oil it was. Anyway I would drive until the oil light came on. When I added oil I would fill it to the top of the valve cover. It would last about 2 weeks before the oil light came back on and I would fill it up again. I drove that old ford thru all of my high school and a year longer. Nothing happened. I finally sold the car to a friend of mine and they drove from Cleveland, Ohio to Dallas, Texas and it lasted about 2 more years before he fenders fell off of it from rust. it smoked like a freight train but just kept on going. That is a true story.
Having watched your videos, I would trust you with my cars. What you are doing is great, very helpful. Don't let the haters psych you out. Keep wrenching!

Always entertaining and and always full of small details to pick up on. But you’d want to know; is it white smoke, black smoke, how heavy and when? On the subject; this reminded me of a European video I watched where they filled the engine nearly as much as possible on the bench with a clear molded oil pan they had made. They might’ve had some data points, but definitely coincided with what you’ve said here.
Good on you Kenny. There are always “holier than thou” naysayers waiting in the wings. It is Logical to me what you did and why. You also considered whether the customer would want a fresh oil change . You assessed that the oil was not showing obvious signs of contamination or fouling. Keep doing what you so well!
I am an ASE master tech myself.40 years and still going. If I lived close to Kenny I would trust him with my truck my wife car and anyone else that I know. so to you haters...go find a life......do something meaningful with your life. Kenny is the man.
I use to use my race car oil in my daily driver because at an 1/8th mile at a time it had minimal milage and it was $13.00 a quart. My daily went 400,000 + miles. 6.0 LS engine.
Kenny, i read a few of these comments and it looks like you have nothing to worry about. I didnt see the video you are referring to but over filling an engine wont hurt it, however if it goes on along time, eventually, the catalytic convertor and exhaust will get oil buildup and will smoke for a long time. Many times just changing the oil and adding the correct amount will fix the car. Kenny you have the Guts to do these videos which would lead me to believe your on the up and up. Keep up the good work.
We like to watch Kenny. We like to watch a lot of mechanics. Sometimes they do things we arent too happy with. My old friends used to do a lot of things i wasnt too happy with.
Get yourself one of the magnetic drain plug magnets on a spring and handle. Best tool I've bought in the last 20 years. I got mine off Temu for $6. Went from draining lukewarm oil to draining operating temp oil (in Florida) and not getting burnt.
There is a video showing exactly what happens. Guy overfilles the engine with crazy amount of oil. He cut out a square from the engine block and covered it with a piece of plexiglass. oil pan was also made from plexiglass. It's an awesome video. I tried to post the link but I do not see my reply.
My opinion is this is absolutely fine for a short distance. I test drove a car one time down the highway for a long drive 30 miles 75 mph and low oil pressure light came on. Car was overfilled by 4 quarts. 4.5 quart capacity for reference. Long drive aerates the oil as shown in the garage 54 video and will eventually cause low oil pressure. Car did not smoke or overheat. After I test drove the car I found the video curious to see what happened inside the engine. I did not buy the car. Didnt trust how long he drove the car like that. Looked and saw mouse chewed oil level sensor wires and the guy said "Just kept adding oil" light still comes on. This is a true story. I would think every engine would act different depending on when the oil started to aerate and how long it was driven but that video was crazy the oil amount added was higher than the crankshaft and it didn't blow out a seal and it just started to run rough.
Kenny common sense is uncommon. Good video! I have a friend who runs a machine shop and does all my machine work. He was a NASCAR driver for Ford when he was young and he always adds an extra qt of oil to his vehicles on oil change. He says with the engine running the oil level is on the full mark. Common sense.
Funny, working at Pepsi back in the 80's wrenchin', I went up front to grab 1 of the many sales depts small isuzu picks up they used, to service it.....Well I get it all done, and drive it around the block to park it in the lot. It started smoking, and losing power??? WTF? THEN, I remembered maybe I put too much oil? Checked and yup dipstick was high...I hurried back to the shop to drain out some oil. I had gotten distracted and pulled off of it halfway thru to do something else, for about hour or so. Forgetting I had refilled the oil before the "distraction" lol lesson learnt
When an engine's sump gets seriously overfilled you'll be lucky to even crank it let alone start it in order for damage to even occur. You're a good bloke Kenny. Play safe fellow warriors.
I over filled my 2000 ford ranger once and it only smoked on startup. It had 289,000 miles on it and didn't burn oil. The over fill didn't hurt anything.
Hey Kenny. Marist, that's on your back window at 5:59 .... was a Catholic Boy's High School in Bayonne NJ. If that's the same school then.. that's awesome 😀
I knew a kid that had a geo metro. Not a mechanic. His dad told him to check the oil like every time he drove it. He couldn’t see well and kept thinking it needed a quart. He filled the engine entirely up. At that point it quit running. I came over, drained probably 10-15 quarts of oil out of it, and got it running. The exhaust was full of oil too and it smoked like crazy for about 10 miles but after that was fine again. Was pretty funny.
There many videos showing u can blow seals out by overfilling there a great mechanic who shows with a clear oil pan and shows how the oil mixes and blows the seal
Brother Kenny, I'm so glad that you made this video. You needn't justify anything to me but I must say to the naysayers "Get a life and STOP WATCHING THIS CHANNEL!! This man is the best damn technician I have ever watched. I love my brother's channel.
Just maybe, the haters were referring to draining the oil and putting the 4 quarts back in with no filter. The customer requested the filter not be change and put the oil back in because the CarShield policy would cover a overfill claim, makes sense to me. You do what the customer agrees to, nothing more and nothing less. Keep on wrenching Kenny, you did nothing wrong.
Thanks Kenny!! There's always going to be someone online fhat will rant and rave about anything and everything no matter what you do! Don't worry about it and don't lose no sleep over the trolls!
A Russian (East European?) guy made a YT video with a stand-mounted engine. He cut one side out of the crankcase & attached a Plexiglas window. He then overfilled the oil, one qt at a time until oil sprayed out the breather. No apparent damage.
We had one towed in from a rental company that wouldn’t start. Knowing how they operate first thing I did was see if any oil in it well I couldn’t tell where the level was. 🙀 so opened the filler cap and there was the oil pool right up to the cap. So did an oil change and luckily for them it ran fine. 🤦
To anyone that doubts the facts of this. There's a video of a mechanic you took the side off of an engine put a plexiglass window on there. And started it with the correct amount of oil showed how it was ruining and then kept adding oil adding oil adding oil the engine was still running fine. He so severely filled it up with oil it was up into the Pistons oil was coming out of everywhere it could come out of that motor including the tailpipe. But the engine was still running and it didn't damage it in any way. Also the engineers give you a little extra room in your oil pan assuming you're going to overfill it. Also if you don't think that the engineers took into account the idiots will overfill that engine you're nuts.
What I learn as a youngster is that overfill oil will eventually push engine crankshafts seals out and oil will start to leak eventually, so I never overfilled my vehicle. It sounded logical to me.
Kenny- consider that some folks will argue to the death about when is the best time to CHECK the oil- hot, cold, whatever. When you did that the other day, I thought, here we go!
The Honda 3.5 V6 is pretty bullet proof. Perhaps you might get Catalytic Converter issues if you burnt too much oil through them for an extended amount of time. You did a correct Diagnosis and Repair. The only thing I could of suggest is run a can of CRC INTAKE VALVE AND TURBO CLEANER through the PVC hose into the manifold. This would help out to clean any excess vapor oil that might had flooded into the manifold. Everything else is a non issue.
Was his name Rudy, we went out on break, and he kept pumping oil into the engine till it came out of the valve cover. What a waste of oil, he just drained oil into the standup barrel and put the correct amount in, and boy did that car smoke, even with the correct amount in it.
I put 80w/90 rear end grease one time by mistake, lifters starting rattling and think it ran hot till I realized what I did, probably 2 days and 200 kms later, changed it, oil pump went a month later, my brother was getting oil from his work, no lable on can...ughh east coast Canada NB 🇨🇦. Was a 1978 Olds omega(this happened in 1995 ) 2 door hatchback, 231 v6.
But the STANK is so special on gear oil! Maybe you had a cold or allergy at the time. But the sulfur STANK of gear oil just doesn't match motor oil. This just doesn't pass the sniff test!😂
What overfilling will do in severe cases is whip the oil up and introduce air in extreme cases but I don't think most realize that you sort of need to be revving the piss out of the car for this to matter. In most cases you're probably fine and that's exactly what you demonstrated here.
I had cam seal blow out of OHC Ford Pinto engine (Ford Europe Sierra), still don't understand how that happens, it was like only +1.5 liters of oil over the max.

Good on you Kenny. There are always “holier than thou” naysayers waiting in the wings. It is Logical to me what you did and why. You also considered whether the customer would want a fresh oil change . You assessed that the oil was not showing obvious signs of contamination or fouling. Keep doing what you so well!
You’re awesome Kenny, ignore the haters.
Your the MAN! I totally trust your expertise! Thanks for sharing your experience and expertise.
Been watching for a while. I would trust you with any of my vehicles. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Ive always added an extra qt to any Obs chevy or ford truck ive ever had. Never ever had a problem
Very Brave to do esp. with a Chrysler product...😀 Kenny cares about his fans at the detriment of his own vehicle.
You are the Real Deal Kenny. I only wish you were in NE FL. I enjoy your videos. All the best for Meg also.
Pay no attention to all of those people. You can't please everyone. Keep up the great work.
Is it humid down there today? I changed my heater core hoses last night. Still gotta see if my engine is toast. Keep wrenchin'
Don't sweat the small stuff Mr. Kenny. Thanks for the informative videos.
Most people just don't have a clue...
Keep up the great work!
Garage 54 did a video on this with a see through oil pan. Very interesting, to much oil causing massive foaming
There many videos showing u can blow seals out by overfilling there a great mechanic who shows with a clear oil pan and shows how the oil mixes and blows the seal
seal didnt blow clear plastic oil pan created to see what happens melted from heat and leaked channel was garage 54
@@joeberg9823 yes the one they had in the car but the video when they did it out of the car the seals blew but my point is it can happen that’s all
Gotta love it when people who ARE NOT mechanics try and tell people who ARE mechanics how they should do their job. 😂😂😂😂
Keep wrenching sir 🔧
Bonus is the extra oil now has gotten any sludge in there, and cleaned the top of the crank case and windage tray. Now extra cleaned.
Brother Kenny, I'm so glad that you made this video. You needn't justify anything to me but I must say to the naysayers "Get a life and STOP WATCHING THIS CHANNEL!! This man is the best damn technician I have ever watched. I love my brother's channel.
Brother Bob! I hope you are well. I just got home. In the van 😎 Keep wrenching brother 🔧Kenny
You're a good man, Kenny! It would have been interesting to see if the oil pressure had changed, if at all, with it over-filled? Thanks for sharing!
I wouldn’t worry about the horse’s rear end folks. You do great vids.
Mr Kenny keep doing the great job and the haters can eat dirt God bless you and all your family
Thank you Kenny
Sorry to hear the old van is rotting away, I've been there myself.
Some new cars don't even have a diipstick.
Great video. Hope you and family are safe after the hurricane
Some people just suck! They can't help it! Hang in there Kenny.😊
The best part of the keyboard warriors is comments and views help you.
Kenny people are going to bash you because you tell them what's going on with that person problem keep doing the right thing.
What I learn as a youngster is that overfill oil will eventually push engine crankshafts seals out and oil will start to leak eventually, so I never overfilled my vehicle. It sounded logical to me.
I love your videos they are very informative and clear I’ll been learning a lot from them always good to learn from it.
By the way, thank you for all the content. I truly do enjoy watching your videos and I have learned from you so thank you and keep up the good work.
I would trust your logic when it comes to fixing motor vehicles any time you offer it any time.
I run 8 qts. in myF150 5.4 l 3valve....works fine!!! I was a MB TECH for forty years,.......most of these haters could not change thier socks!
Kenny- consider that some folks will argue to the death about when is the best time to CHECK the oil- hot, cold, whatever. When you did that the other day, I thought, here we go!
There will always be those people who spew negativity no matter the circumstances. Just ignore them and do what you do.
If your oil pump locks up, common old Ford thing , you can drive it 50 miles if you put 5 extra qts. 😮
The only car I ever seen smoke after an oil change was when the new kid in the lube Bay filled it up to the top of the valve cover
Was his name Rudy, we went out on break, and he kept pumping oil into the engine till it came out of the valve cover. What a waste of oil, he just drained oil into the standup barrel and put the correct amount in, and boy did that car smoke, even with the correct amount in it.
I did know someone who added 18 quarts in a four cylinder. Oil was pouring out the tail pipe!
I overfilled my crankcase once. I was afraid it was going to break my rings. But it turned me into a newt.
Did not realize it was ninety weight Oil I guess so i'm confused
Was in plain white jug, hot day in summer so oil was thinned out .
I over filled my Cub Cadet, drained out the excess and stopped smoking out the skeeters... still running fine.
Watched a new guy at the dealership bend a rod when overfilling the oil and the crankcase ventilation fed the intake with a river of oil.
Checked oil when cold overfilled by a half quart, now i wont worry too much😂
Nice one Kenny...thanks!
brilliant, you know your stuff, keep videoing,
I had cam seal blow out of OHC Ford Pinto engine (Ford Europe Sierra), still don't understand how that happens, it was like only +1.5 liters of oil over the max.
Ford Pinto. Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
Because it was a ford pinto
Kenny, its the internet, where people who don't like they're own life go to hate on other people. Don't let the negative comments get to you. Thanks.
