92 chevy I had Chased my tail for weeks and even with a friends help we battled a issue. Cold it ran worse. Got better as it warmed up Would fall on its face Stall when cold. Finally did a pressure test Started out fine then pressure dropped to 2 Dropped the tank to replace the fuel pump. Rubber hose on top of the fuel pump was hard as a rock and split. Gotta love that ethanol

Had an '80's Toyota that idled & rev'd fine (in Park) but couldn't get out of its own way; top speed about 30 MPH.
Pulled up my shade tree & tried to diagnose the problem. Replaced in-line fuel filter, rebuilt carb, ran gas tank dry & refilled with name-brand gas....no change. Checked timing, new distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, wires. Wasn't misfiring either. Had a collapsed muffler!!!

One of my worst ' head scratcher '
( more like pull hair out ) troubleshooting jobs was where I put another engine in my sister's car, hooked everything up, and it ran but only dead slow idle. If you touched the gas it quit. I went over everything till I was pulling hair out then after thinking , it occurred to me that the old engine blew a lot of oil before destruction, then the car sat a few months.
I pulled the exhaust off the manifold and it fired up like a race car. The old engine gunked up the catalytic converter ( early converter ) and then it sat and the gunk hardened up like asphalt.
Another one more from the computer Era was a Ford Zetec engine that managed to run backwards a few turns and in the process have the belt skip 3 teeth.
It ran but only had about 20 hp. and it showed up absolutely zero codes.

I do agree the other items needed to be addressed (fuel pump, control module) as the new parts let the engine rev higher, much higher than before, I am glad you kept chasing the mid-range response as in doing so you found the air filter was missing.. Cleaning the Air Mass Sensor is always a good idea. Nice tip re the contact cleaner.

First thing I do for low power concerns is watch your O2 sensors and TPS under a short wide open throttle event. If they drop lean during WOT then you have a fuel delivery issue. If it stays rich you rule out fuel.

He did say it seemed odd oh the freeway, and what i experience was nearly bucking, and i told him if it's doing that you need to go to a mechanic! He was like you are my mechanic. Smh, i was visiting for a month I'm not always around to fix his stuff.

It revved good up on the top end before and would still stumble on the low to mid-range after the fuel pump change. If it had low fuel pressure from a bad fuel pump, it wouldn't get enough fuel and it would stumble on the top end, when it needs more fuel. Not at low RPM when it doesn't need as much fuel. I would like to know what the fuel pressure was after the fuel pump change. I bet it was about the same. Even if it was an improvement, the behavior of the engine was still the same, so I doubt the new pump was needed.
When diagnosing a low power complaint, don't make it any more complicated than it needs to be. Start with the basics and work from there. Look at the age of the vehicle, the mileage and when it was last serviced. The first thing you should have checked is the air filter to see it if was clogged. You would have seen that the filter was missing, you would have installed a filter, and you would have seen a massive improvement. I would bet that improvement would have been so massive that you would not have even considered checking the fuel pressure, let alone changing the fuel pump.
If it has enough miles on it, I would check the plugs too. If the owner was too lazy/cheap to put an air filter in it, then It's doubtful they changed the plugs either.

A mechanic I came across does side jobs who charges $750.00 labor to do it which is a large amount for me in retirement though I can afford it. I can't guarantee my work and I expect he can. Hey Bobby9195, stop taking calls from the ex wife as she won't listen to your advice. Hello brother 'little Kenny'. Hello to Meg too. Ford and most of the other manufacturers used to make things simple to work on (1960's and into the 70's) but then they got upset with all of the emissions and safety demands by the Federal Government and California Resource's Board and went to the OBD 1, followed in 1996 with the OBD 2 system and now all of the 5 volt modules on board that control the operation of everything. Hey Kenny, you sure do go to Mexico a lot. Is the proving ground there getting visited by someone who just doesn't care and leaves their glass there? About that arm cut, I'm so glad that you healed. So, you're a medic too! Kenny, where are your gloves when pulling that pump out of the tank? I really appreciate your systematic approach to an issue like this Ford Transit had. Your experience qualifies you to be a MASTER MECHANIC/TECHNICIAN. You must be ASE Certified because you sure do know your stuff!!! I love the Fox bodied Mustang too, but 8 of them, wow. I always wanted a Mustang SSP as used by the Police. I have never understood why Ford given the history of the Mustang back to 1964 as a 1965 model hasn't always had the simpler body style like the original as a 2 door sedan instead of the fastback roof styling. I say give the customer a choice! I want to go to "Mexico" with you someday before I am done on earth! I would definitely clean the throttle body. "KEEP WRENCHING" my brother. BTW, you are also a perfectionist...not a bad thing...I am too.

For some stupid reason the pumps are bigger than the hole in the tank

In the mid 80s I tried to help a friend work on their mid 70s Mustang-II. I have refused to touch a Ford ever since. GMs and Japanese cars are my favorites to work on.

    Maybe a used pump from a junkyard? 27:17 😅

A brand new quality replacement from the dealer parts counter if necessary is the way to go. Don't waste your time with the junkyard.

Used fuel pump was what I was thinking, too.
Some things are worth taking a chance on, others are worth buying OEM. Consider how much fun it's NOT to drop a tank...

"It ain't got no gas in it." I would've looked at the throttle body too, just to clean it.

Not funny. My son had an Astro van stopped running. I asked "you put gas in it? Yes I put 5 gallons in it. Squirted starting fluid in the intake, starts fines so it must be a bad fuel pump. Jacked up the back end to look at the tank and found the filler hose disconnected, someone tried to siphon the tank. Not sure how my son failed to notice gas splashing on his shoes when he tried to fill the tank.

At about 2:00 minutes: people can't respect others when they don't even respect themselves. The need to at least be tought some decency.
Hang in there and keep on showing the better side.

It’s those “people” did the trashing. There is something in the human spirit that makes us angry when there is such little respect shown for our world.
