Grievous was a menace to society in this one lol
FACTS
Sends fucking chills up my spine. Boy came in upside down like it was nothing and rocked everyone
Still hate how he was basically just “Vader 2” in this show. Complain about the nerf in canon all you want, I still much prefer watching the slimy, prideful Grievous.
Indeed he was this is the cannon grievous in my opinion
So this was made while they were making Revenge of the Sith. George Lucas hadnt decided yet whether Grievous was an ultimate Jedi Killer or a mustache twirling villain of the week. Ultimately we know what he chose but the animators went with the first option. In my own head canon I like to think he was a jedi killer as seen here in the beginning of the war. But instead of being injured by Mace Windu at the Battle of Coruscant, it happens much earlier in the war. Turning him into the coward that we see in canon.
Keep in mind, for a lot of people, this was their first time seeing General Grevious
Also, the guy who was behind this show, also worked on Samurai Jack and Dexter's Labratory
Dexter Jettster's Laboratory.
Fun fact: Anakin and Asajj's fight was on Yavin IV, the moon where the rebel base is in A New Hope.
I will always be sad that the others Clone Wars ignores this entirely. This actually gives a good reason for Grievous' cough.
Basically everything in this that does match the other clone wars can be seen as canon
@@cmwolf2281 I'm happy to live in a world where the terrifying, slow moving, Piston Ship Of Doom is canon.
It’s referenced a few times but not a lot
@@baeleth I'm not sure, I get the reference...?
@@chrissonofpear1384 the newer Clone Wars TV show depicts Grievous having the cough from the beginning, while these shorts intentionally show him terrifyingly powerful and without a cough until Mace Windu crushes his chest casing around his organs, pretty much right before the beginning of SW Episode 3. While the newer Grievous is still cool, they pretty much retcon out this more menacing and arguably better version.
In this version, the Colouring of the Clones represents their rank... red means it’s a Captain, the blue ones are ARC trooper and/or Lieutenants, yellow stands for Commander and green is Seargent
The main red captain here was an ARC Captain. ARC's are a part of the special forces and would end up serving mainly as lieutenants for basic clones. Fordo (the red ARC captain) was given the rare position of being a captain both to regular clones and ARC troopers.
Same with AOTC
@@larniieplayz6285 clone wars > aot
Literally not the case
@@dusky6280 it‘s part of LEGENDS, of course it’s the case there… I read the damn Books
Mace Windu was badass in this series!
Everyone was.
Almost too bad-ass. It was so jarring to see the characters so much more competent and bad-ass, compared to the live-action counterparts.
@@thedefinitionisthis which is why its been said that animation is something that could be truly used to show how powerful the jedi actually are but disney has done a piss poor job with it
Palpatine is a literal blind spot in The Force. Even as a child when he was discovered by Darth Plagueis he was subconsciously and unknowingly clocking himself so no one could sense his presence in The Force
Isnt that Legends now?
@@joramsim it's canon in our hearts.
And anyway, Disney did nothing that goes against it, so it can be considered canon imo
@@morgoth9671 I'm glad alot of legends is uncanon, there's toooo muuuch
@@Ejaz100 i think you meant "never enough"
@@morgoth9671 never liked legends
This was everyone’s first introduction to grevious then they nerfed the hell out of him in rots and even more in tcw
It worked in Revenge of the Sith though. Grevious ran because Windu had injured him and that’s why it was easier for Obi-wan to dislodge his chest plate on Utapau.
I don’t see much of a difference between those 2
The reason why Grevious is so badass is *because* it was everyone’s introduction. They haven’t fully figured out what his character was going to be in the movie, so they gave his design to the studio and so they created his character based off of his design because they weren’t told what it was.
I think he was also seemingly weaker in rots because he was only fighting some of the best Jedi in that
Grievous was weaker in rots than he was in tcw
The reason Grievous was like this is because George Lucas only gave the people making the show his design and that he killed jedi, and they went the direction they thought was right. George didn't like this, mainly cause he thought this version of was basically a re-skin of Vader (which he wasn't exactly wrong), so in RoTS and the Clone Wars, he made Grievous the way he wanted him, a mustache swirling villain.
Definitely prefer this one
@@TheHandofDestiny I kinda agree you, while I don't think he should be mega overpowered like in this and the rest of legends, I definitely think he should be a lot more powerful and menacing then he is in The Clone Wars.
@@expanddongerydoo34 yeah. Who said mustache twirling villains can't be powerful like this? That balance was to be achieved but never was
@@expanddongerydoo34 Agreed
@@lord2.0works I heard they got a pretty good balance in the canon novels and comics, but I haven't really read them so take that with a grain of salt.
Mace has a Force ability called Shatterpoint, it allows him to spot weak points with the force. That's why he's able to punch the droids and turn them to pieces.
Thanks, I have been trying to find out why Windu was able to do that with droids.
I'll never understand why it's said this isn't cannon. The end of this series is literally the opening shot of Episode III. In the movie, Grievous is holding his chest and coughing, which is because of the interaction with Mace Windu at the end of this series. It's also an incredibly directed series of animation thanks to the amazing Genndy Tartakovsky. Oh, and when you said "vintage" I died inside. :(
Yeah honestly I don't care what Disney or Disney drones say, this is still canon to me.
@@SkuIIKn1ght based and true take from a guts pfp to be expected
George Lucas liked it but wanted to do a clone wars told by him with new cgi technology. He and Dave pulled quite a bit from the 2d clone wars. Ventress, her ship, battle of mon Calamari, and shaak ti protecting the chancellor.
It’s because the 3D animated series came out in 2008 and sort of retconned a couple of things from this series, like Grievous’ gravely voice and cough always being prevalent. Though to be honest the micro-series is more in-line with Revenge of the Sith than the 3D show, where Anakin and Obi-Wan fight Dooku and Grievous every other episode. Revenge of the Sith treats it as though it’s the first time they’ve met Grievous and that they haven’t fought Dooku since Attack of the Clones, and the 2D-series keeps much better consistency with that, as does a lot of the comics and novels from the pre-2008 era of Prequel content.
When originally aired (before SW3), George Lukas did declare the Tartakovsky mini series as canon. When the 3D animated series began, Lukas declared that as an official continuation of events after the Tartakovsky series. Things changed.
@SkuIIKn1ght Agreed. This is still canon to me. Disney may now have control, but they lack the understanding & respect of the original franchise.
You’ll never know what it was waiting for these 5 minute episodes and waiting for ROTS to come out.
I was so excited as a kid
FIRST!
and I absolutely love this microseries. It's from the guy who made Samurai Jack and Primal, Genndy Tartakovsky
notigannnnnnnnng
Primal is that style at its finest. totally worth a watch
@@CptApplestrudl yooo, Primal is fire. Such a great show, just in its execution
I guess it's confirmed that he's never seen Samurai Jack. Amazing show, won Emmys and everything. Oh, well. Maybe he'll get used to it
I watched this series as a kid. Very different from the other clone wars.
Same. Good times
they re both good , just different
5:08 The funny thing is, the clones are talking most of the time. Their helmets just block everyone around or outside from hearing them until they choose to speak to someone without their helmet frequency. So even if they are quiet to the viewers, the scenes of them doing nonverbal hand signals is definitely more of a militaristic setting.
The final shot of this series is the exact opening scene of RotS. Also, it's a micro-series because it originally aired broken down in episodes between shows on Cartoon Network. Part 1 was 20 episodes of 3-5 minutes each, while Part 2 was 5 episodes of longer length.
This actually came out before Revenge of the Sith and back when Adult Swim was new on Toonami, which also put down a lot of the building blocks for what Adult Swim would become. A lot of these guys used shows like this as a kind of transition between the kids cartoons the network was running, then after this Adult Swim would come on.
Kit fisto is one of the few characters that still a badass in both series.
He is the Jedi Aquaman
With all due respect to the maestro John Williams, I prefer Grievous’ theme here when he’s first revealed than his theme in Revenge of the Sith. It’s so unnerving and makes him all the more intimidating
I still get chills every time I hear it
I agree, you could take his theme over other Grievous fights and you immediately get a much stronger aura of danger:
ruclips.net/video/t1RZzDp8ANA/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/vHKLOBuW47g/видео.html
Mace Windu and Grievous are the highlights of this micro-series, Anakin’s really dark in this too
This was "a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one." - Palpatine
The Jedi that looked like Shaggy that Grievous crushed is named Sha’a Gi
That was a nice little reference on the writers part
Lol thats cool to know
And the werewolf looking one with the green lightsaber was a fan-made drawings that won in a contest that they were having that year
A lot of the voice actors from this would go on to voice them in The Clone Wars. The voice actors for Obi-Wan, Dooku, Yoda, Mace are prime examples. They're pretty much brought in for most projects when they need those characters voiced and can't get the movie actors. However other voice actors from this micro series, like the ones for Anakin, Padme, Palpatine, Ventress, are not the same as the ones in The Clone Wars.
Unfortunately Yoda is going to need a new person to do his voice in other media now
@@larniieplayz6285 why?
Edit: Nvm i looked it up. Wow didn't hear about it. Reading that he's recovering so that's good for him. Poor guy.
"Did he just fucking CRUSH him?!" Yep, that scene is how Grievous originally got his cough.
The OG Star Wars anime!
This is canon to me, I don’t care what Disney says. Grievous, Durge, the clones….. I LOVE this series.
Also, the rain on the lightsabers during Anakin v. Ventress is soooo sick
"Star Wars: VINTAGE Clone Wars"
Damn, I'm totally calling it that from now on, that's badass.
Grievous had such black air forces energy that Yoda fuckin shat himself.
The Og Clone wars is sooooo dope wish they made Grievous in Ep 3 and in Clone was bad ass like this
There are Legends books that stick with this version of Grievous. A small part of why I prefer that canon to Disney's. Hell, Grievous fought Boba in one of the novels. A teenage Boba, but Boba nonetheless. He was basically a cyborg version of a Xenomorph or Michael Myers in that.
It was all Lucas
@@austinkersey2445 That wasn't Disney version of Grevious that was George Lucas version of him.
@@austinkersey2445 Revenge of the Sith and Clone Wars were both before Disney took over the franchise.
@@combatsportlover6919 I know, I kind of misspoke. I actually don't mind his Revenge of the Sith character. It's the 2008 Clone Wars I don't like in terms of Grievous. I just kind of ignore it and use the books.
The end might feel a bit sudden but it leads directly into Episode 3 lol so that'd be why
As Dooku said:
“I’ve been looking forward to this”
Also, I just realized that Anakin and Obi-Wan‘s hairstyles have reversed. 28:46
Obi-Wan’s hair was long and Anakin‘s hair was short. But now Anakin‘s hair is long and Obi-Wan’s hair is short.
“It reminds me of some of the animated shit RUclips people make to make fun of tv shows and movies”.
Goddammit all I see is Meat Canyon now lmao
This show made general grievous one of my favorite characters as a kid in the mid 2000s
Mace crippled Greivous internals, so now he coughs.
A fine addition to my collection!
If you dig the animation style, but want something more “adult,” then you should totally react to Tartakovsky’s newest show “PRIMAL.”
It is absolutely insane, and everyone sleeps on it like it isn’t the best shit he’s put out!
Fun fact: the actor who voices Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor) is the same voice actor who plays him in the CGI Clone Wars series
2003 Grievous hits DIFFERENT
It's great you uploaded this right after your reaction to Clone Wars ep.9 season 7. If you remember Anakin and Obi-Wan jumped to lightspeed to save the "chancellor" from Grievous. Revenge of the Sith starts like the mini series end. So, now you now where you are in the timeline going in to ep. 10 of last CW season! Enjoy your reactions so much, great job!!
19:35 Shaggy
Mace Windu wrecking an entire Army of Droids using his bare hands and the Force is unironically one of my favourite moments of this franchise's entire History.
Clones are just more badass in this one.
Filoniverse fans when they start to see Clone Wars 2003: 🤣😂😆😅
But when they finish it: 😲🫢🥹🧐
It ends right before Episode III, so now it is ROTS time !
That badass clone in red is captain fordo, he's an absolute unit, maybe as close as a clone can get to the level of Jango
Glad you enjoyed it! I wish Grievous had been this intimidating in Episode III.
I'm not sure how this went under the radar for me because I would have been all over it when you released it. This series should never be ignored.
I watched them all as they aired. What we call Vol 1 was composed of 5 minute cartoon shorts. George Lukas was very happy with them but wanted more from Genndy Tartakovsky, which ushered in Vol 2. Vol 2 were composed of 15 minute cartoons allowing for more story detail to come forward each episode.
*At the time of airing, George Lukas declared these micro series AS OFFICIAL CANON.* They were released after SW 2 as promotional shorts for the upcoming SW 3. When the 3D animation series "The Clone Wars" came out much later, Lukas declared them as official canon continuation meant to take place AFTER the Tartakovsky series. Decisions changed since then.
*Important takes from the mini series:*
- Obi-Wan's growing bond with Commander Cody as a dependable ally, which gave more depth to the betrayal of order 66.
- Palpatine's constant use of playing one side against the other to help develop the training of young Anakin in his direction. *Palpatine was able to successfully push Anakin's strength development and graduation of Jedi rank while isolating Anakin's training from proper development of Jedi wisdom.* Jedi wisdom is THE most important facet of Jedi training.
To truly earn rank as a Jedi, one needs proper wisdom to guide their strengths. Anakin blazed his way up the ranking but without the proper training.
This all gives added depth to how important Qui-Gon Jinn would have been as a father figure to Anakin. Obi-Wan by comparison was inexperienced and always seen as more of an older brother - not a father.
- General Grievous was truly a force to be reckoned with. His confidence at taking on Jedi was growing significantly as he had been slaying them throughout the war. Until he met up with a superior force, that is.
Mace Windu had a reputation as a top tier bad-ass and this series did well to highlight that. Windu was not going to "play around" with Grievous. Crushing Grievous' cybernetic parts not only gave the General his nagging cough, it also shattered Grievous' confidence.
Grievous grew a bit of PTSD self doubt in his character arc. He became more cautionary, especially at the thought of taking on another Jedi.
Fun fact: that giant muscly bounty Hunter Obi-Wan fought was named Durge, and in the old canon was the most threatening and powerful bounty hunter in the Clone Wars. His species is nearly invulnerable, and he even survived his “death” when Obi-Wan force pushed himself free. Obi-Wan did eventually beat him, but he had to do it by throwing Durge into the sun.
Technically, that was Anakin who threw Durge into the sun.
Even some of the art designs of newer Clone Wars are inspired by the original. This can be seen most especially in Count Dooku
Oh shit, the OG that got the ball rolling for the clone wars. Can't wait to get off of work so I can watch this shit!
The clone wars until its end makes many references to this series, so it will always be canon for the fans.
I always thought this was canon. I remember being there for the prequel trilogy and when this came out it perfectly filled in the gaps between 2 & 3. It even explained why general grievous had his cough because mace windu crushed his throat with the force during his fall from failing to save the chancellor who was just kidnapped by grievous and seamlessly blended into the opening of episode 3. It even explained where some of grievous’ lightsabres came from.
Mace has this ability called shatter point I believe, he can pin point the weak spots on his target and well shatter it with the help of the force of course. Therefore the punching and running through them droids with his fists. And how he knew where to target grievous.
I don’t know if you have watched: Samurai Jack or Titan Symbionic; but those series was created by Tartakovsky.
Normally his series are less dialogue and more visual, and most of the time it’s just perfect.
You should react again to Revenge of the Sith
Pretty sure he’s going to
In the grievous fight. The first Jedi who got killed was intentionally made to look like shaggy from Scooby-Doo. And his name was Sha-Gi.
This was the only thing we had to watch to help us understand what was going to happen in episode 3. It was released on television before episode 3 was released in the theaters.
You were right aout the saturday morning cartoon vibes, these episodes were released one a week, every week leading up to the release of Episode 3
You know you're getting old when this show is considered "vintage"
Grevious 2003: kills 1 padawan, 2 knights and injures 2 masters
2008: can’t defeat Ahsoka with even 4 sabers and always runs away. Look I love Lucas but this was such an unforgiving downgrade 😂
He probably would have killed three masters(Secura, mundi, and Shaak Ti if the clones didn’t arrive, he would have finished off mundi, then killed the other two
The downgrade makes sense, but it's true that this version is really badass.
Even with the downgrade they could've at least given some of his backstory, so casual viewers could understand how badass he really can be without reading the books
Edit: I'm dumb those books aren't even canon anymore either
He almost defeated her and than she escaped on Slave1.
@@user-xx6vy9ri8p slave 1 was not in that episode
It's called a micro series because episodes were only around 4 min long (the last few were 12 min). It's just been edited together for the DVDs and streaming. George Lucas wanted to make short animated ads leading up to Revenge of the Sith, but director Genndy Tartakovsky urged him to lengthen it in order to tell actual stories. The series was so popular, Lucas decided to expand it into the CGI series.
Despite some contradictions in the CGI series, the micro series was still considered canon up until Disney bought the franchise.
42:20 Yes, that is indeed why he coughs. This took place in between Episode II and III at the time. Before Revenge of the Sith was released/premiered.
By the time the Prequel trilogy had released and filled in the story before the Original Trilogy, we didn't have The Clone Wars TV show yet. When that was released, this 2003 animated series was not canon anymore. But at the time, it was the reason why Grievous had a coughing problem.
The message boards on IMDB in 2003 were going nuts after General Grievous' intro at 19:55 because he had already been announced as the new villain for Episode 3 almost two years before that movie even came out. Obviously he wasn't anywhere near as badass as he was in this first appearance. I remember thinking "This dude is going to make Darth Maul look like Winnie the Pooh in live action."
Oof
There are some short episodes of the show "Star Wars Forces of Destiny" where we can see more of Ahsokas jedi training, that she knows about Padme and Anakin and we can also see her doing flight training with Padme, for example. (2 of these many episodes are called "Unexpected Company" and "Teach You, I Will".) In case you are interested, you could react to some of them as well. These episodes are very short, btw. Also, will you watch Star Wars Visions?
I think in the 2008 Clone Wars Grievous was scary during his assault on the Night Sisters.
He was pretty good in lair of grievous and son of dathomir as well
@@larniieplayz6285 I hope Son of Dathomir returns on screen alongside the other 9 cancelled CW arcs, at some point.
FINALLY! This was the Clone Wars I watched when I was a kid, it came out before Revenge of the Sith
For anyone who was 5-10 years old in 2002-2005 knows this is the true clone wars show. Filoni has nothing on Gendy.
Gives me Lowkey Ben ten animation vibes loves the early 2000s 2D animations :)
A little bit!
Original Ben 10 was a superior show compared to latter versions. Kinda like this Tartakovski´s Clone Wars version is superior to Filoni´s
42:15 yes, you got it :D
Jedi can sense other force sensitives but Palpatine is so powerful that he can hide his darkness.
This will always be my Clone Wars. What Filoni built is incredible, but this shit was on another level.
watching this as a 4-5 year old was so fucking badass. I remember believing that grievous part was the coolest shit ever
@@barkley8285 Same! I sat totally silent through these episodes, speechless
The part of the second season where Chancellor Palpatine is captured loosely follows part of a novel called “Labyrinth of Evil”, which was once the official lead in to Revenge of the Sith.
I wish that novel was still canon.
Mace Windu uses a lightsaber out of pity for his enemies.
Correct, not canon, though some of the events are referenced, buf they likely didn’t happen exactly the same. Mace on Dantooine, Shaak Ti being sent to protect the chancellor…
The animation is very similar to Samurai Jack, which was also done by Genndy Tartakovsky. Great show if you haven’f seen it
See?! See how this gave Ventress a better intro than in the other show?! Granted the other show was made as a sort of follow up
I’m pretty sure a recent book established that Dooku finding her in canon was similar to this
The bounty hunter Obi fought was named Durge. He hates mandalorians, including Jango, so he took great pleasure in killing his clones. He VERY recently got brought into canon in comics. Haven’t seen if he’s still a tentacle man.
Obi, Yoda, and Mace’s voices are the same as in the other show. Once again, only Anthony Daniels returns from the movies to voice 3PO
Durge was revealed in something else to still be alive after getting blown up
Ventress had that same ship and outfit in the first Nightsister episode. That was a neat callback
Ah the good old days when Barris wasn’t a traitor
Luminara does kinda have a male-ish face in this
The planet where Anakin and Ventress fight is Yavin 4! Where the rebels have their base in New Hope and Rogue One
Ventress _could_ have died there, though she did come back in comics and I think some books
Mace crushing his chest is the Legends reason for the cough. In canon his implants just irritate his lungs
Not sure if you caught it but Shaak Ti was still alive
It literally ends with the start Revenge of the Sith
The History of Grievous is actually super sad he was kind of a proto Darth Vader experiment
Finally!
Mace couldn't duel grievous because of his ability to copy. Allowing Grievous to gain Mace's skills would be a disaster, so he just crushed his lungs. That's why Kenobi was chosen to fight him. He's defensive, so copying doesn't help, giving him an advantage.
finally!!
this is criminally underrated.
Grievous never was a Sith, he has no force powers. He's just a super badass cyborg
9:32 As far as I know only Obi, Yoda, Mace and Dooku are the same voice actors from the other Clone Wars show
I absolutely loved Mace Windu and Kit Fisto in this series. Also Grievous was always scary af!
Say what you will about the older Clone Wars cartoon, but this version of Grievous was the superior incarnation, and what they did to him in the new series, regardless of plot or creator choices, was unforgivable.
Fan fact: at 40:25 those bears are actually saying "New master! New master!" in Russian.
One of my fav parts of this is Ventress kicking ass in the fighting pits. They actually made that canon in the novel dooku Jedi lost which was super cool for me.
Technically this is 50/50 canon. Certain events happened but not the way that this show tells it. And the ending basically sets up Episode 3. This was canon until the newer show came out and made it uncanon. But again, certain events did happen just not...Badass. I would love to see a star wars movie where the Jedi use hand to hand combat like that or a Grevious Origin story where he was utterly terrifying like this.
2:46 If it looks familiar, it is because the animators for this were also the animators of Samurai Jack
I think Anakin was pissed in Episode III that the council didn't make him a jedi master because then he would have had access to the holocrons and knowledge which was forbidden to be accessed by jedi knights, to save Padme from dying.
the characters that were voiced by the same people in both the microseries and the 2008 series are Obi-Wan, Mace, Dooku, C-3PO (obviously), and Yoda. Mat Lucas (Anakin in the microseries) was chosen because he sounded like Hayden Christensen (AKA Anakin from the movies), but for the 2008 series they wanted to go in a different direction so they chose Matt Lanter.
Ay so Glad your reacting to the 2003 series for Clone Wars This brings back a lot of childhood memories way back when I was a kid when this show aired on Cartoon Network
This is my fave SW stuff on the screen and i still have my action figures from this series, i was there every night waiting at the vcr to record every one of these episodes when they aired. sucks bc all my favorite SW shit aint even canon no more : D
I feel the same. I got so excited when I saw a toy that was the ARC Troopers from this with the gunship they use against Dooku (with the shark painting). It's still in its box!
25:11 threw me out of my chair.
In the Star Wars revenge of the Sith novel count Dooku actually wants Obi-Wan Kenobi to become a Sith instead of Anakin
OOh! I loved these as a kid! Nice to see people still like them.
I think in canon, Vader stabs Shaak-Ti while maditating (like seen by Yoda in a vision on Dagoba or in the deleted Episode III scene) during the 501st Order 66 assault on the Jedi Temple.
i remember this when i was a kid. I think it was 5 min eps every sunday. but ya the animation reminds me of samurai jack vibes
The ending was set up to begin Revenge of the Sith where we see Obi-Wan and Anakin rescue Palpatine to start off the movie.
This series released a ton of episodes like 2-3 minute shorts for a year and a half and the last one where Grevious kidnapped Palpatine right before Revenge of the Sith hit theaters in 2005.
This is part of my childhood. I saw this when I was 13
They didn't water Grievous down; afaik, the creators of this series just didn't know what he would really be like.
Also, this isn't considered canon to the Clone Wars that Disney finished. So Grievous coughing and all that, they have different origins.
Yooo I love this series!!
I can see why every character got nerfed from this show.
If not mistaken, some of the voice actors from this series went on to voice roles in The Clone Wars. Not all of them though, Anakin I know was voiced by a different actor in this.
The Grinch looking Jedi master is Oppo Rancisis, actually one of the few Jedi to survive order 66 and the only other council member besides Obi wan, Yoda, and Coleman Kcaj in cannon if I’m not mistaken
