1:06:16 - Rita - at the close of Mavis and Derek's wedding reception, and especially when the newlyweds drive off to their honeymoon - just breaks my heart. After the heartbreak of losing Len so suddenly, then being knocked-back by Tony the policeman, she really didn't deserve this - but it certainly showcased Barbara Knox's magnificent acting talents. October '88 - March '89 was Rita's tour de force, and I can watch these episodes over and over. Thank you, ProfessionalGun.
I miss the days of the action continuing over the end credits. Don’t forget the rest of ‘89 as well. I remember a TV Times interview with Barbara, she praised the writing and said it was every actress’s dream to have a role like this. Even in the scenes following Alan’s death like when Bet visited her at the hospital she was still outstanding.
Kim Wilde - ‘Never Trust A Stranger With Your Heart’ at 00:26:23. I love hearing the music from the 80’s in the cafe. Takes me back to happy times at school.
One of the joys of watching 80s Corrie is listening to music being played that was actually popular at the time. Kylie Minogue, Erasure, Rick Astley, Banarama...the list goes on 😀
I have to say, the standard of writing has improved in leaps and bounds recently. After going through the fatigue and boredom of horribly padded scenes in the last couple of years: - Curly shouting at Terry for months about the 'business', Brian and Gail's will-they? won't-they? who-cares? all-out misery, and The Endless Susan Barlow Saga That Just Won't End - the latest raft of storylines (headed up by Alan & Rita) have been bang on. And we haven't even got to the 'big one' yet, though the groundwork has been laid! They've even revitalised the Percy Sugden/Phyllis Pearce antagonism, but this time made it actually funny. Moving Sugden in with Emily was also a superb idea - two characters who are utterly unalike, with plenty of room to play off each other. Just like Alec & Bet. Sanctimonious misery-guts Gloria finally pushed off her pedestal and getting her comeuppance, too. Whoever was in charge was really pushing this show in the right direction. About time! The only criticism I have is the way they made Mavis more aggressive in October. It was like watching a panto villain. Glad to see that she was firmly put back in her dithering place come this month.
They knew they had to up their game. Since the launch of Eastenders in 85, Corrie's viewing figures were consistently going down. It wasn't until 1989 that it saw an increase again.
I love Alan & Rita’s two hander row. Think I’m right in saying that episode was penned by Adele Rose, who was great at gutsy scenes. Alan said some vicious stuff, unpalatable home truths for Rita, then they’re talking over each other and barely pausing after one of them has finished speaking. Rita hysterical, Alan remaining calm. Great stuff, fantastic acting from Barbara and Mark all leading up to the events of ‘89.
The standard of writing has improved a great deal recently. Mark Eden is so very unlikable as Alan. Yes, the script is good, but it's his cold delivery that nails the growing psychotic and manipulative personality of Bradley. Something just isn't right, but you can't quite put your finger on it at this stage. Barbara Knox surprised me with the quality of acting during her emotional breakdown scene. What a contrast between the characters! The onscreen chemistry between them is what made this particular story one of the all time best.
The song Vera was singing was one of the ones being sing years ago in the Rovers when Martha died! ( think she was already dead at that point, but no one had realised yet.)
I've often wondered if the writer's had originally intended for Alan Bradley to be a villain? The whole Alan, Rita, Jenny, storyline was dull for the first year or so. But now he's shown his true colours it's making the show unmissable again.
Mark appeared on This Morning during the 50th celebrations and said he was called into the producer’s office and told they were planning a makeover on Alan’s character. Little bits from his past would gradually emerge, like he wasn’t away working on the oil rigs but had actually done time for GBH. You’ll see how aggressive he got with Terry over Gloria in 1986 episodes and even put the wind up Derek when he was getting on his nerves poking his nose into the running of the Kabin lol. Think one of the writers or the producer at that time had said prior to making him a baddie his character wasn’t really going anywhere, even though it meant his time on the show was limited until Alan got his comeuppance. Mark was somewhat of a matinee idol throughout his long and varied career and turned his hand to writing post Corrie.
He was definitely showing a nasty side by 1987 when he beat up Terry and also got nasty with Derek (not that i really blame him for losing patience with Derek though lol). I think its been a slow burner and built up gradually over time. There were other things like his surprise wedding for Rita that showed how controlling he is.
Lollll but that word is so antiquated!! and insulting to people...Yet still quite amusing, i suppose change is enevitable though and can't really be stopped, oh how we all wish for the good ole' times wen we were young xx christine.

The scene with bloody Bradley & Rita really was exceptional! The acting was superb! But it was heartbreaking to see Rita, strong, resilient, in control & determined Rita, brought down Into a quivering wreck! So desparate to get The Rat back She lost her self respect & allowed Bradley to see how he could manipulate her for his own benefits! My brother and I drove up to Manchester while on holiday from Australia in 1990 to go on the Granada Tour. It was awesome. They had a whole interior of Parliament that's hired out to shows that need it, both sides of Baker Street with 221B Sherlock Holmes flat, and of course Coronation Street! The street then was only 2/3rds scale and they used wide angle lenses on all the cameras. The interiors are used for costume and lighting stores, and some were writers offices - they weren't two stories inside. We had a pint in the Rovers. At the end of the street, behind the viaduct, is a huge sound stage where all the interiors were filmed. They also had a clever thing you could do for £25 (which was a lot back then), of going into a blue-screen studio where they'd chromakey you into the set of the Rovers with some of the actors. The lines we said were on a big board and you'd say them when the light next to them would go on. We couldn't hear the actors so it made us sound very flat as we didn't know what was being said, in what context. This is the result! ruclips.net/video/nvKtmyKMIu0/видео.htmlsi=LHna294-TXSlY96f

Ab Fab redid that song. Can't remember who originally did it - might have even been Bob Dylan. It was Adrian Edmonson singing the Ab Fab version.
