- Опубликовано: 5 дек 2021
- In this video we revisit the budget 454 build. We have rebuilt this entire engine with no machine work, and trying to save money wherever possible without sacrificing horsepower or longevity.
The Holley distributor I used was part number 565-200BK
The Holley valve covers I used were part number 241-281

Man watching you build an engine/motor with your son brought a small tear to my eye. I miss my dad and all the projects we worked on. Great video!
That’s great thank you at least you have the memories
I was thinking that his son won't truly know just how lucky he is for years. Then you illustrated it. I'm glad you have the memories!
It's amazing to watch people who know how to do all of the engine work
Thank you I wish I knew more
These are awesome videos. I like the fact that they are clean and family friendly.
Thank you, we try to be allways family friendly
WOW! I'm majorly impressed at your knowledge of engine building! Genius; and then showing your son, too! Kudos!
Thank you
O Brother where art thou is one of the best movies ever made! I don't want FOP, I'm a Dapper Dan man!!
Yes it has soo much funny stuff in it
Care for more gofer Everit?
I’m just a man.
man of sorrow I seen trouble all of my days 😂😂😂
Excellent work, and great build! Not only are you on point with the work, but honest and genuine the whole episode.
Thank you
This man knows his business. Such detail. I enjoy every video. Keep 'um coming. If Ralphie learns only half of what his Dad knows he will be one "Hell " of a mechanic. . What's the saying; "Like Father, Like Son". Indeed!
I hope he continues to learn this stuff thank you
This reminds me of my first build..my first car,a 67' SS Camaro that had a 327,not a 350..I was 16 way back in 1982 and was making $2.75 an hour..took me forever to be able to afford to do the engine myself how I wanted it done..I did have the best machinist do all the block and crank work and balancing but I did all the building and install..it was so badass...now watching this video is making me jones all these years later to do another one, which I will eventually do when the time comes.
I watched the first and now this video and loved it..so awesome to have your kid(s) involved..I had to subscribe and look forward to seeing what this goes into.
That’s awesome I love building engines like this
the parts you used may be (they are lol) questionable, but your process is spot on (for a home build). good job getting the little one involved too.
Anyone watching this and chiming in with negative comment or "professional tips" has never built an engine, they've only seen it done. Great work brother
🍻
Thank you man really appreciate it
Really nice job. It brings back memories when I helped my Dad put the engine together on our 1950 olds rocket 88 engine I was 8 years old I am 71 now. You did a lot of great shopping on those parts for that engine build too. All those parts add up but hey you will have a real screamer of an engine no matter what car you put that in.
That’s great thank you
I have rebuilt the 454 before. I takes a rebuild well and will run smooth even with the cam. Those heads look great. Ralphie will remember this build with you forever.
Thank you
You can definitely build horsepower using aftermarket and used parts. Did it a lot racing brackets but when we stepped up to Super comp (8.90) Super E (7.90) Then Top dragster (7.50's) we built BBC engines. Dart blocks, splayed 4 bolt rod caps, filled block, Scat crank, Carrillo rods, Crane roller cam, the entire valve train was Jessel, Brodix Brute force ported aluminum heads. Matched intake, 1050 Dominator ported to 1150. On the dyno at 468 cubes it built just over 1000 horses and about 900 plus torque at 7400 RPM running on C-14 racing gas. Ad on some nitrous it ran 7.50's. Got out when qualifying alone was in the mid to low 6's. Just built a really reasonable 350 small block Chevy blower motor for my rat rod. Used almost all used, vintage and some new parts and a 1960's GMC 6.71 blower. Good job proving it can be done on a budget. Always enjoy your family oriented video's. Keep up the good work.
Wow that’s fast . Thank you for watching
I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to engine builds but with that said I find your videos genuine and entertaining. You’re a funny dude. Please keep the videos coming
Thank you I appreciate it
This is how my Dad and I rebuilt engines in the 70s and my Dad did the same before that with his dad in the 50s. I love to watch all the comments of all the kids that think everything needs to go to a machine shop etc. We didn't have the $$ for that we rebuilt Chevys and MGs and Austin-Healeys and Pontiacs and Sunbeams etc. in the garage and after that I worked in the Oilfields and we rebuilt Detroit Diesels in the field and on offshore platforms and they all worked as they should. I'm doing a full roller 880 block 350 right now and watching a ton of videos te remind myself of things I have forgotten. It's been 20 years since I have rebuilt one. Man have to the prices of parts gone up. Awesome to see someone passing on knowledge to the younger kids. Thanks for the Video.
Awesome video Josh. For a low budget build she's gonna be a beast. Gotta love the torque of a big block. Can't wait to see what she does. Love the channel more an more as the videos come out. Keep up the great work Josh! Totally love the channel! Keep On Motoring Brother!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you I love a big block
Back again for more! Killing with the videos. You guys are making me want to video log my 1982 Pontiac Firebird restoration…
You should
Awesome Videos I’m 76 and learning from them. You and your channel & Family are Wonderful
Thank you I appreciate it
Nice engine. It's good to see kids involved with this kinda stuff. Great job guys. Be blessed
Thank you I appreciate it
I didn't know at the time I traded for it but I acquired a L21 454 ,thought at the time was a L29 but after researching I found out just why the L21 engines were sought after over all others! Enjoy the channel buddy, sometimes its nice to take a step back and start back over like we did in our previous days of building cars!
That’s cool thank you
Can't wait to see what you put that beast in ,love your method and manner ,go team sleeperdude.
Thank you
yeah I hope he has a plan for it. love to se it drop into a nice nova or camaro.
It's good to start them while they are young, I taught my son how to build engines when he was 12. He's in his 30s now and still wrenching. He's better than me at it.
That’s awesome thank you
So glad to see the subscribers are climbing! You deserve it!! Of course you owe it all to Rocky!!
That’s exactly right
I have a water pump, and I want to paint it black. I love that song!!
Awesome
Your videos get better and better every time. Like that you do not use curse words like some. A family oriented show.
Thank you really appreciate it
Good to see yall again have a merry Christmas an a happy new year buddy
Thank you for watching
Also when you're breaking in a camshaft you want to use non detergent engine oil. If you use regular detergent engine oil it will wash the cam Lube off of the cam
Ok thank you
You do a great job making your videos interesting! Thank you for sharing your expertise!
I have recently stumbled onto your channel. You and the family are awesome and I am binge watching all of the videos. May you be blessed in all your endeavors.
Great job on the engine build part 1 and now part 2. This brought me back to my high school days when rebuilding my 1970 SS 396 Chevelle motor. Something about a big block that you just can’t resist! It’s only fitting that you put this in a vintage Chevy. My favorite is a 68-70 Chevelle but a Nova or even a Camaro would be cool. 👍🏻
I wish those cars were cheaper, thanks
@@Sleeperdude I do too! Anything you find will be cool!
Why do I watch your videos because, one family participates in your projects and two this is about as true to real life builds that the average person can do for themselves. I mean it always pissed me off when most of the videos out there say a budget build today you can do at home and then they basically build a vehicle that the average person can't afford to do because of whatever reason but love working on our projects without having to go take out a huge loan to do so. This is truly how a person who loves to do things like this would do on a budget. When others say build on a budget they forget to say how much the budget is 😂. If your budget is like mine it's like this and build at home the best way and affordable as you can do.
That’s right thank you
Worked at a gas station in the mid 1970's. Checked oil with gas purchase, etc. Had customers that I saw 2 times a week for a fill-up. I liked seeing these 454's in cars that were driven by little old ladies. They had no interest in getting there, fast. 350's were everywhere. Saw a few 402's... I really like your content, and the goats. We are almost neighbors. I'm in Asheville.
That’s a great story thanks for watching
I LOVE WATCHING AN ENGINE BEING BUILT! Yes indeed. Nice job! I still would call this a day. Good build. I did my engines on the cheap too. Except for oil pump, ign and other things. 👍👍👍
Really enjoying your content 👍
Heard a comedian make the comment
“All I learned from my dad was how to hold the light wrong and how to swear !”
Funny story but not the case here !!
You’re a great role model to your kids and to other young dads I’m sure
Keep up the great work
Thank you I appreciate it
@@Sleeperdude Yes , I learned to let the son mar the car with the plastic bucket ; while washing it. I learned to be less fussy and perfect. Kids and relationship is of higher importance.
great build guys you seem to be on the ball with everything you do i love your work great video keep them comming
Thank you I appreciate it
awesome video brotha! Such a badass moment when you can build an engine with your Dad, guarantee he will be telling his buds when he goes to high school.
Can't help but love this..
All my friends know about you and your family..
Keep it up
nice job can t wait to hear it fired up . good to see father and son working together
Thank you
Nice work dude. Not to bad budget-wise. Would love to see this in the opal wagon
Thanks that would be awesome
Let’s go!! Father and son! Can’t wait until my 2 little boys do the same with me
That’s great, I am blessed
This reminds me of facing valve faces on a bench grinder I marked a 45 degree mark on the tool rest and faced the valves on a 2004 caravan
Put a hundred thousand miles on it no problem
Awesome
Great job bud, I love building motors and it just relaxes me. Can't wait to see it running!
Thank you
Good job! I love working on engines, especially the big block Chevy. Parts are very plentiful and fairly cheap compared to an LS engine. I really didn't know what a big block was capable of until I purchased my 1970 Chevelle SS 454 a few years back. OMG that car is the fastest I ever been in. It idles like stock but I don't know yet what they did to the internals, but the car is very fast. Original 512 block, GM 290 oval ports, GM iron intake, LS6 carb, headers, 4.10's. Love it. I suspect your engine N/A will make somewhere around 500 HP/ 500 TQ. With the turbos I don't even want to guess that. Be careful.
That’s so cool . Keep up the good work
Excellent video. Can't wait to see you put it in something and finish the build. Keep up the good work.
Me too thank you
Very comprehensive! Great video, as always, thanks!
Thank you for watching
I'm no pro engine builder, but when you clean up those holes for the head studs I believe you might want to use a bottom tap. Normal tap won't clean the threads all the way down. Hope this helps.
Ok thanks
@Paul Rattenbury Big blockChevy head bolts go through to the water jacket. They are not blind holes regular tap is fine
46:05 is the most accurate statement lol
You're doing an excellent job on the 454 big block Chevy. Gonna be a beast of an engine.
Thank you
Mad skills. Learning a lot from you. Thank you.
Thank you
Great job and very entertaining as usual. Love the honesty, humility and professionalism. Keep it up. I guess dropping that 454 in the Falcon would be frowned upon. Could cause the universe to become unbalanced.
Thank you, I don’t have any problem putting a Chevy motor in a Ford but I would kind of hate to do it to the falcon because it’s so rare
Send it Dad the kids will have a memory that is priceless. Love your family’s content thank you again
Very thoughtful of her regarding your rocker arm.🙃
Enjoyed watching this build. Can’t beat big block power! 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
That’s right thanks
You are “THE MAN JOSH”! 👍👍👍
Enjoyed the video very much and the fact you show a performance motor can be built by people like me that don't have an unlimited budget !! Great video as they all are !!
Thank you
very professional job .
Thank you
Man that is an awesome motor you putting together you and Ralphie. Whatever you put it in the front wheels are going to come off the ground. I like how you was honest about how you like to put Motors together. It was a good thing you had your safety flip flop on. Brother please be careful with those heaters! I know you need Heat I just hate to see you burn yourself. I don't know when your birthday was but I want to wish you a happy birthday to you. Your wife definitely got you a good birthday present. Good video man I enjoy watching especially when they are this long.
Thank you
i spent $3,500 on a STI Subaru short block = $15, total - radiator starter altenator power steering all new - full rebuilt heads s/steel valves - all top shelf and alloy sump kit STI balancer big oil pump s/steel fuel braided hoses walbro pump and custom fuel pressure regulator .
I would have choose them all But you gave us too many choices. Rockies the star of the show.
Yes he is
Outstanding work...
Thank you
When putting on the lower gear, you can cut a piece of exhaust pipe to fit around it, put a piece of wood on the outer end of the exhaust pipe and tap it in.
Ok thank you
Not here to give you any advice on how to build anything or be a financial advisor .. just a fan of what you do ..you guys have become one of my favorite channels .. keep killing it 💥💥
Thank you I appreciate it
Thank you for showing a TRUE LOW BUDGET big block build 🙏that you and Ralphie are blessed with one Bad Ass screaming motor 👍👍
Thank you for watching
I'm doing a 454 GEN 6 L-29 now. Love watching others work in the garage too. I'm waiting on parts. Do me a favor,,,,feed that goat, 😆😆😂😂😆

Thanks
I'm keen as mustard to hear this thing running! 👌🏻
Me too
I wish I was doing that right now. Great winter project.. No garage. Great video thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching
With all them cheap parts hope it don’t blow up on you. I will be praying for your engine. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you I will need it
Let’s go!!’ It’s build time! Love to see this!
Thank you
Just want to compliment you for being such great person.
Thank you I hope I am
Wow amazing re build loved this keep up the good work josh 👍 thanks for sharing enjoyed this 👍
Thank you
My first motor was a 289 Ford, stock bottom end, stock heads (port matched) careful assembly and swap meet bolt-on parts (carb, intake, cam, headers). It was kinda mild but it had a lumpy idle, it acted kinda hot. I was mighty proud. My car would really scoot but I didn't race for real. Everybody thought it was fast.I was in that motor for $450 (back in 1977)
Oh wow
nice job....i'm doing one now...gen4 in my 454ss truck 1990
U got a great crew and a wonderfull family these are wonderfully done videos
Thank you I am blessed
Good stuff got yourself one heck of a crew to boot.
Yes I do thanks
Great video, reminds me of my younger days. All I could afford was worn out vehicles so I ended up doing a lot of overhauls.
Thank you
Now I know the meaning of your "handle". You can never judge someone by the way they talk or how silly they may come across because they just might show you just what they've got "under the hood". Impressive and extremely entertaining video. Looking forward to the next one, later Superdude!
Thank you…
Great video. Nice seeing y’all with Ralphie & Rocky. Getting closer to opening RC Cola with bottom of flip flop. Cheers from California🍾
Thank you keep practicing
Okay, you did lube the timing chain after all…
very good!
Love the show
and the R.C. Cola.
Thanks man
Rocky's Livin the Dream.
True
Beautiful cant wait to hear her run🤘
Thank you
Sleeperdude you are really smart thanks for passing the knowledge. God bless you and family.
Thank you
@@Sleeperdude your welcome brother.
Love watching you. And Ralph’y and the goats hahahaha I always use a old timey oil pump bottles with a little piece of rubber hose on the top so it will seal to the oil hole in the lifter and just simply pump the oil till it comes out the pushrod hole
Can't wait to see you fire it up itll be fun
I was wondering if you adjusted your valves by ear when you get it running it’s how I was taught to do it and I guess everyone else was too👍🏼
Great video my friend
That’s right thank you
Great job the motor looks fantastic
Thank you
Super show , interesting and informative 👍🏻🇬🇧 love it bud. Very knowledgeable guy 🙏🏻
Thank you
Glad to see you pushing the front hub on. and not BEATING it on with BFH
Yeah I don’t like beating them on
Great picture show ! 👍👍
Thank you
Wow! Love this video! My first car was a SS Chevelle with a 454 that I bought for $450 at 17 years old.
Awesome thank you
Would love to see that 454 put in a sleeper chevy truck. I have wanted to do that for years. Love the videos, keep going!!
Thank you
Yeah, you need to offer Official Sleeperdude, steel-toed flip flops in your merchandise.
Good idea
A real 454! Thanks man.
Thank you for watching
GOOD JOB LOVE THE TORQUE WRENCH YOU DO STUFF LIKE I DO ,SOME CHINEESIM .I HAVE THE SAME INTAKE USED 7/16 EXPANSION PLUGS TO PLUG THE HOLES

Yes sir you did , tell your boss they will understand
I am a new subsciber, and I love your videos. You have a great family, and they are also fun. I wish I could put that engine in my 62 Falcon wagon, but I like it the way it is. Can't wait to get my shirt. God Bless. Allen.
Thank you that would be an awesome cat to put it in
My wife's cat would be so cool with a 454 but I don't think he would like it lol
